    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- There is a Cajun seasoning company called Slap Ya Mama; they sponsored the red zone on some preseason NFL broadcasts. Because the world has gone nuts with political correctness, they withdrew their sponsorship this weekend. Oy.

-- Jon Olerud, Bob Watson and Michael Cuddyer are the only three players who have hit for the cycle in both leagues.

-- Dolphins 25, Cowboys 20-- Still think Matt Moore is better than Tannehill. Not that it matters, but Dallas is 0-3 this summer.

-- Saints 23, Colts 17-- Drew Brees was 9-15/128 with two TDs; he played only in the first quarter and looked pretty sharp.

-- Titans 24, Falcons 17-- Jake Locker was 12-17/188 with a TD; if he is accurate passing, he could be a hell of a quarterback.

-- A's 2, Angels 1-- Winning run scored on wild pitch in 8th inning, teams are now tied for first place in AL West.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Random stuff on a summer day......

    13) Recruiting is an inexact science. Saints' QB Drew Brees only got three D-I offers coming out out of high school and he went to high school in Texas: Purdue-Kentucky-Brown, and Ivy League schools don't give athletic scholarships.

    12) Saints' TE Jimmy Graham got fined $30,000 for dunking the ball over the goal posts twice last week, while Johnny Manziel got fined $12,000 for giving the finger to the opposing bench while he was on the field. Which offense is worse?

    11) The baseball used in the major leagues is bigger than the one used by teams in Japan; takes some adjustment by the Asian pitchers when they come here.

    10) Bruce Pearl's show-cause penalty ended at midnight and Auburn is recruiting its butt off- they've already landed top 10 small forward Danjel Purifoy and have more recruits on campus Sunday. You need talented athletes to run/press like Pearl's teams do, so recruiting becomes more important than X's/O's, at the start.

    9) Was watching a replay of LY's Georgia-Auburn game on SEC Network (they replay A LOT of football games); amazing how lucky Auburn got last year, between that game and then of course the Alabama game. Curious to see this year if Auburn has as much good fortune, especially after QB Marshall got busted for posssession of weed this summer. Coaches don't like distractions.

    8) Over last decade, Notre Dame's football team is 27-48 vs spread when they're favored to win. Not very good, no matter who the coach has been.

    7) If you had ESPN on Saturday afternoon, you saw that Eastern Washington has a red artificial turf football field, like Boise State's blue field. Hard on the eyes, if you're watching it on TV.

    6) Losing team in Baylor's last three bowl games averaged 44.8 ppg; average total in those games was a ridiculous 97.3. Bears won two of the three games.

    5) In a six-inning stretch bridgeing Friday/Saturday games, Twins scored 23 runs against Detroit. Tigers' pitching was hurting wiith Verlander/Sanchez hurt, but they did get Verlander back last night.

    4) Hunter Pence played in his 350th consecutive game Saturday, longest active streak in the major leagues.

    3) Home teams are 20-4 this season when Gerry Davis umps the plate; they're 7-19 when Clint Fagan calls balls and strikes. We have umpire data most days here on the baseball page-- its pretty enlightening.

    2) Whats the coolest idea you've seen for a trophy for winning a fantasy league? There is one website that makes actual championship belts for winning, like they have on pro wrestling. Thats a little much, but unique.

    1) Its a little eerie when I go on websites, and the ads on those sites are for other sites I've visited recently. Obviously they have a way of knowing where I've surfed the web and I'm not good with that. Guess thats how they make more money.

Logano races to third win of year

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Joey Logano claimed his third NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory of the season in the Irwin Tools Night Race on Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Logano took the lead from Matt Kenseth with 44 laps remaining in the 500-lap race and remained up front for the win.

"Man, what a Shell-Pennzoil Ford there," Logano said. "Made some small adjustments all night and got our third win of the year."

Brad Keselowski passed Kenseth to move into second with 31 laps remaining, and the Team Penske duo of Logano and Keselowski pulled away for a two-car battle to the finish.

"The Wurth Ford Fusion was about equal to Joey's," Keselowski said. "He just had track position on me."

Kenseth finished third, Jimmie Johnson was fourth and Kurt Busch rounded out the top five.

Kenseth was one of four drivers who stayed out during the final caution of the race inside the final 100 laps, inheriting the lead from Jamie McMurray, who headed for pit road during the yellow flag.

"I just knew that new tires for the setup we had tonight and what our car would do in traffic -- I just knew that clean air was going to be worth more than new tires," Kenseth said. "Maybe we could have gotten tires and beaten those guys. We'll never know. I just had such a hard time. I knew clean air would cover up a lot of problems."

McMurray had taken the race lead before the halfway point. He lost it to Keselowski on pit road just before a lap 270 restart, but when the race returned to green, McMurray retook the top spot.

McMurray had passed Kasey Kahne for the top spot on lap 239. Kahne had inherited the lead from Kevin Harvick by staying out during a caution just before the 200-lap mark. Kahne also lost spots to Keselowski and Johnson.

Harvick pitted for four tires under the caution and restarted 12th. His No. 4 was the class of the field for much of the first half of the race, though, leading the first 37 laps before losing the lead to Jeff Gordon.

Kyle Busch, Kenseth, Logano and Denny Hamlin also led laps before Harvick retook the top spot on lap 161.

Hamlin got off pit road first by taking only two tires during a caution just before lap 130. Harvick, on four fresh tires, moved into second on the restart. While racing Hamlin for the lead, Harvick clipped Hamlin, ending Hamlin's race.

Busch's night was also cut short after leading the pack. He was caught speeding on pit road during a competition caution on lap 60 and then was collected in a wreck that involved Aric Almirola, Kyle Larson, Clint Bowyer and Brian Vickers.

"We were catching a slower lapped car. I think it was the 7 (Michael Annett), and we were all starting to find our way to the bottom because the 7 was clogging up the top lane," Almirola said.

"The 55 (Vickers) started to cheat his way down there, since I was already inside of him, and the 42 (Kyle Larson) got to his outside, I guess, and the 55 got together with him. It's frustrating. It's certainly not the way we wanted to end our day."

      NOTES:
Kevin Harvick's pole was his fifth pole of the season. He set a track record with a 14.607-second/131.362 mph lap in qualifying Friday. ... Jeff Burton once again subbed for Tony Stewart. ... Matt Kenseth won last year's Bristol night race. ... The two Bristol races in 2013 were won by two drivers -- Kasey Kahne and Kenseth -- who headed into this race weekend winless. ... Carl Edwards won at Bristol earlier this season. .... Winning at Bristol runs in the Busch family. Both Kurt and Kyle Busch are five-time Sprint Cup winners at BMS. ... The Busch brothers' five wins apiece matched Jeff Gordon's five at the track. ... Kyle Busch became the youngest race winner at Bristol, winning at age 21 years, 10 months and 23 days in March 2007.

Game of the Day: CFL Doubleheader

Calgary Stampeders at Ottawa Redblacks (+9, 48)

The Ottawa Redblacks aim to halt their four-game losing skid when they host the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday. The Stampeders boast arguably the best defense in the league, surrendering fewer than 17 points per contest, which is concerning for a Redblacks' offense that has not scored more than 17 points since Week 5. Calgary is 3-0 on the road and 5-0 against East Division opponents.

The Stampeders defeated Ottawa 38-17 in Calgary in Week 7, when Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns. The Redblacks surrender a league-worst average of 300 passing yards, so Mitchell could be in for another strong game. Ottawa was limited to 38 rushing yards against Calgary’s defense, which averages a league-low 81.1 rushing yards allowed.

          TV:
          3 p.m. ET, TSN

          LINE HISTORY:
The majority of books opened the Redblacks as 9-point home dogs, which is where they currently remain. The total opened and presently sits at 48.

          INJURY REPORT:
Stampeders - OL Brander Craighead (Questionable, ankle), RB Matt Walter (Questionable, concussion), LS Randy Chevrier (Questionable, undisclosed), RB Jon Cornish (Probable, concussion). Redblacks - DL Chris McCoy (Questionable, wrist), DB Jovon Johnson (Probable, bicep).

          ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (6-1):
Star running back Jon Cornish could return to the lineup Sunday for his first action since suffering a concussion in Week 1. Calgary has fared well in the running game without Cornish, averaging 115.1 rushing yards. The Stampeders will likely be without receiver Jeff Fuller, who dislocated his shoulder, and defensive lineman Micah Johnson, who suffered a knee injury, for the foreseeable future.

          ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (1-6):
Jovon Johnson returned to practice this week and could rejoin Ottawa’s defense sooner than expected after being placed on the six-game injured list. Quarterback Henry Burris is struggling with his lowest completion percentage (58.9) since 2006, when he was a member of the Stampeders. Defensive back Antoine Pruneau has recorded 18 of his 21 tackles in the last two games.

          TRENDS:

          * Stampeders are 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games.
          * Redblacks are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall.
          * Under is 10-1 in Calgary's last 11 road games.
          * Under is 9-2 in Calgary's last 11 games overall.

          CONSENSUS:
56 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the visiting Stampeders.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at BC Lions (-3, 50.5)

Two of the hottest teams in the CFL meet Sunday when the BC Lions host the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Saskatchewan is riding a four-game winning streak, while BC has won its last three. The Lions defeated the host Roughriders in Week 3 and Saskatchewan looks to return the favour as the Lions enter their bye week.

Kevin Glenn has BC’s offense humming with 94 points in three games, but will be in tough against a Roughriders' defense that has not allowed more than 17 points in a contest since a Week 4 bye. Saskatchewan leads the league in sacks with 29 thanks to 12 from John Chick, and the quarterback pressure has led to nine interceptions for the Roughriders - bad news for Glenn, who has already tossed 11. Saskatchewan’s offense has been most effective on the ground, averaging 131.9 rushing yards.

          TV:
          7 p.m. ET, TSN

          LINE HISTORY:
The majority of books opened the Lions as 3-point home faves, and after slight movement in both directions the line is presently back where it opened. The total opened 51 but has slightly gone down to 50.5.

          INJURY REPORT:
Roughriders - DB Marshay Green (Questionable, undisclosed), Dan DePalma (Questionable, undisclosed). Lions - LB Alex Hoffman-Ellis (Questionable, undisclosed), T Andre Ramsey (Questionable, ankle), RB Andrew Harris (Questionable, ankle), T Jermarcus Hardrick (Questionable, knee), DB Josh Johnson (Questionable, knee), CB Dante Marsh (Questionable, hamstring).

          ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (3-5):
Chick was named defensive player of the week after recording three sacks in a win over the Montreal Alouettes, while receiver Rob Bagg was named Canadian player of the week. Jerome Messam is the latest running back to take the lead for Saskatchewan, rushing for 180 yards over the last two games. The Roughriders signed kicker Justin Palardy, putting pressure on Chris Milo, who is 15-for-21 on field goal attempts.

          ABOUT THE LIONS (6-1):
Stefan Logan earned offensive player of the week honours after recording a career-high 145 rushing yards in a road victory against the Toronto Argonauts, while Tim Brown earned special teams player of the week with 249 combined return yards. Andrew Harris is expected to return to the lineup Sunday, bumping Logan back to backup and kick-return duties with Brown. Travis Lulay took a few snaps against Toronto as he is eased back into action following shoulder surgery.

          TRENDS:

          * Under is 8-2 in Roughriders last 10 games versus the West.
          * Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.
          * Under is 6-2 in Lions last eight games overall.
          * Roughriders are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings in BC.

          CONSENSUS:
55 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the Lions.

Wind blowing in at this stadium Sunday

The red-hot Minnesota Twins' bats will have to deal with inbound wind from rightfield as gusts of around 13 mph will be felt during their game against the Detroit Tigers Sunday.

The Twins' offense has exploded for 38 runs through the first three games of their series with the Tigers, including 18 in both games of Saturday's doubleheader.

However, our stats for Target Field indicates that offense slows with wind blowing in from right. The Twins are just 1-6 and the Over/Under count is 2-5 in this situation this season.

Books have the Twins as +152 home dogs with a total of eight for Sunday's game.

Under trending when this club is on the road

The Chicago White Sox have been participating in a lot of low scoring games away from U.S. Cellular Field as of late.

The Under is a red-hot 6-1 in the ChiSox's last seven games on the road through Saturday, which is a good omen for backers as they'll take on the New York Yankees in the Bronx Sunday afternoon.

Chicago are -128 faves with a total of seven.

                      Trends show Braves dominating Cincinnati

The Atlanta Braves have been on a tear lately, and recent history is showing they love playing against the Cincinnati Reds - their opponent Sunday.

The Braves are 5-0 in their last five meetings against Cincy through Saturday. Atlanta are -112 favorites with a total of eight.

Astros producing W's behind this pitcher

The Houston Astros have been on fire behind starting pitcher Brett Oberholtzer, winning six out of his last seven starts.

He'll be on the mound for the 'Stros when they visit the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field Sunday. The Tribe are currently -157 faves with a total of eight.

Underdog the star in preseason Saturday

The underdog went 7-1 against the spread in the eight preseason NFL games Saturday, good enough for a winning percentage of 87.5.

The lone favorite to cover the spread Saturday was the Baltimore Ravens, who defeated the Washington Redskins 23-17 and covered as 2.5-point home favorites.

The big day at the betting window improved the underdog's record to 25-21-1 thus far in the preseason.

There are a pair of games on the board Sunday, with the San Diego Chargers currently 6-point road faves at the San Francisco 49ers and the Cincinnati Bengals traveling to face the Arizona Cardinals as 2.5-point road dogs.

Overs cashing tickets so far in playoffs

We're three days and six games into the WNBA postseason and the Over has been the hot betting trend so far, posting a record of 5-1 heading into Sunday's action.

The only Under result was in Friday's game between the Los Angeles Sparks and Phoenix Mercury, which the Mercury won 75-72, but finished under the closing 157 total.

Two more games are on the board Sunday, with the Chicago Sky hosting the Atlanta Dream (total currently 155) and the Mercury visiting the Sparks (155.5).

Game of the Day: Angels at A's
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland A's (-134, 7.5)

The Oakland Athletics needed to sweep a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels in order to take back the lead in the American League West. The Athletics will attempt to do just that when they host the Angels in the finale on Sunday. Oakland drew even atop the AL West with a 2-1 victory on Saturday as Coco Crisp raced across with the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning.

Los Angeles won eight of nine before arriving in Oakland to grab a two-game lead in the division but had a ninth-run rally fall short in Friday’s 5-3 setback before narrowly falling Saturday. The Angels, who host the Athletics in a four-game series next weekend, are winless in five games at Oakland this season and will visit the Athletics again in the final week of the regular season. Oakland is pulling out of a slump with three wins in their last four games.

                              POWER RANKINGS:
                              Angels (-204), A's (-202)

                              PITCHING MATCHUP:
Angels RH Jered Weaver (13-7, 3.70 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Scott Kazmir (14-5, 2.73)

Weaver is being leaned on to step up in the absence of Garrett Richards and needs to work deeper into games. The veteran has not recorded an out in the seventh inning in any of his last five starts and allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings at Boston on Tuesday. Weaver is making his third start of 2014 against Oakland after dropping the first two while yielding a total of 10 runs - nine earned - and 17 hits in 11 1/3 total innings.

Kazmir traded wins and losses in his last five starts and is coming off a win over the New York Mets in which he surrendered one run and four hits in six innings. That win gave the 30-year-old a career high of 14, besting the 13-9 mark he put up with Tampa Bay in 2007. Kazmir is facing his former franchise for the first time this season and was reached for five runs in three innings by Los Angeles on Aug. 9, 2013

                              TRENDS:

                              * Under is 20-3-3 in Weaver's last 26 starts vs. Athletics.
                              * Under is 8-2 in Angels last 10 overall.
                              * Road team is 4-0 in umpire Mike Everittss last four games behind home plate.
                              * Athletics are 5-1 in Kazmir's last six home starts vs. a team with a winning record.
