    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- SF Giants won their protest; their Tuesday game will resume today at 4:05 with Cubs leading 2-0 in bottom of 5th inning. Game had been declared over after tarp wasn't put on the field the right way and rain made the field unplayable.

-- Angels lost star pitcher Garrett Richards to a serious knee injury when he was covering first base.

-- Charleston is considering bringing Bobby Cremins back as an interim coach as they look to do damage control on a program that fired Doug Wojcik for verbal abuse of players and staff. Not as easy fix.

-- 14 of 16 NFL games had totals of 40+ last week; every game this week has total of 40+. Why? So damn many defensive penalties.

-- Washington 3, Arizona 2-- Ninth straight win for Nationals, 4th via walkoff.

-- David Price pitches against his old team in St Pete this afternoon. Rays have lost seven of their last nine home games.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) Browns did the wise thing and named a starting QB; doesn’t matter who it was (it was Brian Hoyer); just matters that they diffused the media onslaught and can now go about the business of prepping for their season opener and can also work on developing their rookie QB at his own pace. Good for them.

    12) Look at it this way: Browns’ first three games are: Steelers-Saints-Ravens; which one of those three, if any, are they winning? Cleveland has a Week 4 bye, then they can insert young Manziel in at QB, if he’s earned the spot. Easier to go from Hoyer to Manziel than it would be to go from Manziel to Hoyer.

    11) This could be the first season since 2007 where no rookie QB will start in Week 1; ’07 was the draft that blessed us with JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn.

    10) Solid show of mental toughness Tuesday by Astros’ DH Chris Carter, this generation’s Rob Deer, who struck out in his first four AB’s, then crushed the game-winning 3-run homer in the 9th inning. Would’ve been easy to go in the tank and call it a night, but he hung in there and emerged a hero.

    9) Astros’ pitching prospect Mark Appel was 2-5, 9.74 in 12 Class A starts this season, but Houston has a small fortune invested in him, so they promoted him to AA anyway, annoying some others in the Astros’ system.

Appel is 0-1, 3.98 in four AA starts; he recently complained that they weren’t letting him pitch deep enough into games. Astros have a different way of cultivating their pitching prospects; they need some of these prospects to bloom soon, if they’re going to improve anymore- they have gotten better this year.

    8) Former used car salesman Allen H. Selig was in Oakland this week; the lights worked, the plumbing didn’t overflow and Selig visited his frat brother from Wisconsin, A’s owner Lew Wolff. Selig emerged saying the A’s need a new ballpark, but he’s been saying that for five years and nothing has happened.

    7) As an A’s fan, I love the Oakland Coliseum; it has character, it gives the A’s a home field advantage, because its cruddy and no one likes going there. Having a new stadium is no cure-all; ask the Twins, who won a lot more in the Metrodome than they have in Target Field, which should’ve been built with a retractable dome. Just because you have more revenue doesn’t mean you’ll spend it the right way.

    6) Odd Fact of the Day: A’s manager Bob Melvin got one of his first baseball jobs because his great aunt played bridge with Bud Selig’s parents. Thank God for that; if not for bridge, the A’s might not be as good now. Who knew?

    5) SLS Hotel is opening in Las Vegas this weekend; it is supposed to be really nice, they have SLS hotels in Miami and Los Angeles, will have to check it out in November when I’m out there. Doubt the Armadillo can afford to stay there, but you never know.

    4) SNY had some cool video Tuesday of the 1971 All-Star Game, of Vida Blue striking out Cardinal 3B Joe Torre. A’s had uniforms with white vests over green sleeves; took me back to my childhood seeing those clips. Good stuff

    3) Forbes magazine’s three most valuable NFL franchises: Cowboys-Patriots-Redskins.

Stop with this BS of not calling the Redskins by their name. Political correctness has become nauseating. No one is disrespecting Native Americans by calling this football team the Redskins.

Daniel Snyder could make a freakin’ fortune by caving in, changing the name, then selling millions of dollars in apparel with a new nickname on it. Who would fault him, but he hasn’t done it. We’ll see how it plays out, but I sincerely do not think the name is disrespectful.

    2) This hasn’t been a great week for the Reds: their game Saturday was rained out on a sunny night in Denver because of a water main break, then Sunday, they lost a doubleheader, when they led Game One 9-5 in 9th inning, Game Two 5-2 in the 7th inning.

    1) One of the most fascinating part of modern sports for me is the tug of war between modern analytics and old-school philosophy, which is more sound?

I love numbers, but you can go overboard with them. There is a human element to sports and team building that cannot be ignored. Old school horse sense has its place, but there has to be balance. The best franchises have that balance and that’s why they give themselves the best chance to succeed.

Burton to drive for Stewart again this week

Tony Stewart will sit out a third straight Sprint Cup Series race this week when he hands the wheel of his No. 14 Chevrolet to Jeff Burton for Saturday's Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Stewart has not raced since he was driving a sprint car that struck and killed 20-eyar-old Kevin Ward Jr. at a dirt track in New York earlier this month.

Burton subbed for Stewart last week at Michigan and finished 37th in just his third Sprint Cup race of the season. Stewart was replaced two weeks ago at Watkins Glen by Regan Smith, who also came in 37th.

Stewart-Haas Racing has not announced when Stewart will return to the series, saying it's Stewart's decision. He has stayed out of the public eye since the Aug. 8 incident in Canandaigua, N.Y., when his car hit Ward, who had walked up the track after a crash and gestured toward Stewart.

An investigation into Ward's death is continuing.

Stewart also canceled an appearance at Plymouth (Ind.) Speedway scheduled for this weekend.

In 542 career Sprint Cup starts, Stewart has 48 victories, including one at Bristol in 2001.

Total bettors cashing in heading into playoffs

With the WNBA playoffs set to tipoff Thursday, there are fewer chances for total bettors to cash in on the often neglected league. In the final 17 games of the season, the over/under went 4-13.

Those 17 games saw an average of 146 with eight games scoring 140 points or less.

Giants win protest; game at Wrigley will resume

The San Francisco Giants will get another shot at the Chicago Cubs after Major League Baseball reversed the umpires' decision to end Tuesday's game after 4 1/2 innings due to unplayable field conditions at Wrigley Field.

Baseball officials on Wednesday agreed with the Giants' protest and called for the game to be resumed Thursday at 4:05 p.m. CT.

The Cubs confirmed the game would pick up with the hosts coming to bat in bottom of the fifth inning with a 2-0 lead.

The regularly scheduled series finale will follow at approximately 7:05 p.m.

                  West coast pitcher dominating opponent

The San Diego Padres have found no success against Zack Greinke since he has joined the Los Angeles Dodgers. In Greinke's past five starts against the Padres, the Dodgers are undefeated.

Greinke has given up only 15 hits and six runs during those starts against the Padres. All those games have gone under, with an average combined score of 4.2.

De La Rosa surprisingly strong for totals bettors

Rubby De La Rosa has been a strong play for under bettors this season. The Boston Red Sox have an over/under record of 2-8-2 in De La Rosa's 12 starts this season.

De La Rosa has only given up an average of 2.5 runs per game.

Hottest road pitcher takes the mound

Corey Kluber will take the mound for the Cleveland Indians on an incredible road streak. The Indians are 6-0 in Kluber's last six road starts.

Kluber has only allowed six runs in those starts while striking out 47.

Road warriors cash in on Wednesday

There was a full slate of games on the scheduled Wednesday, and the road team posted an impressive 10-5 record for the day.

Six of the victorious road teams - the Houston Astros (+193), Detroit Tigers (+121), San Diego Padres (+124), Texas Rangers (+136), Toronto Blue Jays (+110) and New York Mets (+171) - were underdogs and provided good value for bettors.

With nine games on the board (including the Giants and Cubs finishing their rain relayed game), Thursday is a relatively light schedule.

David Ortiz, Boston - Ques Thurs

Ortiz was taken out of Wednesday's game due to general soreness and is questionable to play Thursday against the Angels.

Carlos Beltran, NY Yankees - Out Thurs

Beltran received a cortisone shot in his right elbow and will miss his second straight game on Thursday against the Astros.

Astros continue to roll versus Yankees

There has not been much to cheer about for Astros' fans this season, but the club has performed admirably well versus the New York Yankees. The 'Stros are 4-1 in their last five games versus the Yanks and will look to finish a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium Thursday afternoon.

Houston won the first game 7-4 and the second game 5-2 and are being tabbed as +157 underdogs for the series finale.

Dallas Keuchel is scheduled to get the start for the Astros, while Brandon McCarthy gets his turn for the home team.

This pitcher's road starts a boon for Under bettors

The Under is red-hot 6-0 in Cleveland Indians' ace Corey Kluber's previous six road outings heading into Thursday's start at the Minnesota Twins.

Kluber's Under streak on the road has come against the Boston Red Sox (3-2 win, 8.5 total), Arizona Diamondbacks (6-1 win, 8), Los Angeles Dodgers (1-0 loss, 7), Detroit Tigers (6-2 win, 8.5), Kansas City Royals (2-1 loss, 7) and New York Yankees (3-0 win, 7.5).

Oddsmakers have placed a total of 7 for the afternoon game.

Game of the Day: Steelers at Eagles
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Steelers at Philadelphia Eagles (-3.5, 50)

The Pittsburgh Steelers have more to deal with than just their in-state rivals Thursday night as they tangle with the host Philadelphia Eagles in the kickoff to Week 3 of the NFL preseason. Steelers running backs LeVeon Bell and LeGarrette Blount face marijuana charges after being stopped shortly before the Steelers left for Philadelphia. Bell reportedly didn't accompany the team after being arrested, but made the trip on his own; Blount did travel with the club.

With their statuses in limbo, 2014 draft pick Dri Archer may find himself thrust into the spotlight. Archer has had just four carries through the team's first two preseason games, but he has flashed some impressive skills in the receiving game with four catches for a whopping 94 yards. The Eagles will be looking to tighten up the defense after getting torched for 76 points in preseason-opening losses to the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots.

                            7:30 p.m. ET, NFL Network

                            LINE HISTORY:
The line has held steady at Philadelphia -3, while the over/under has risen one point to 50.

                            INJURY REPORT:
Pittsburgh: CB Shaquille Richardson (knee), LB Greg Warren (knee), G Cody Wallace (finger), LB Jordan Zumwalt (groin), TE Eric Waters (concussion) and G Bryant Browning (shoulder) are all out. Philadelphia: C Julian Vandervelde (back), LB Bryan Braman (back), CB Jaylen Watkins (hamstring), ILB Jake Knott (hamstring), RB Chris Polk (hamstring), WR Josh Huff (shoulder) and WR Brad Smith (groin) are expected to miss the game.

                            ABOUT THE EAGLES (0-2):
Philadelphia has hemorrhaged points over the first eight quarters of the preseason, but that won't keep head coach Chip Kelly from executing his gameplan regarding key players and their playing time. That approach will see the Eagles face Pittsburgh without inside linebacker and defensive lynch pin DeMeco Ryans, who has started all 32 regular-season games since joining the team in a 2012 trade with Houston. Kelly wants to give the 30-year-old Ryans sufficient rest heading into the campaign.

                            ABOUT THE STEELERS (1-1):
Pittsburgh will need to refocus in the wake of the Bell and Blount arrests, and will look to do that by taking the shackles off the first-team offense in what will likely be quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's last significant tuneup before the regular season starts. Roethlisberger will likely play the entire first half against the Eagles, and is expected to get a chance to run the no-huddle offense that Pittsburgh wants to use more often this season. Roethlisberger went 8-of-11 for 128 yards and two TDs in last week's win over Buffalo.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Pittsburgh has dropped five of its last six preseason games.
                            * Philadelphia is 2-4 ATS over its last six exhibition games after going 6-1-1 ATS over its previous eight.
                            * The Steelers are 1-6 O/U in their last seven exhibition contests.

                            CONSENSUS:
62.15 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the host Eagles.
