    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

College football is only 11 days away; here is the AP top 6.......

    6) Auburn-- Curious to see if Marshall improved as a passer.

    5) Ohio State-- Have four new starters on OL, but have a senior QB

    4) Oklahoma-- Last eight years, are 30-17 vs spread as home favorite.

    3) Oregon-- Already lost their left tackle for season.

    2) Alabama-- Haven't decided on a starting QB yet.

    1) Florida State-- Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

    13) Cab driver in Las Vegas posted all 23 of his fares on Twitter Saturday, adding what tip they gave him. After 23 fares, he had $69.30 in tips, so I learned that I'm a better than average tipper.

    12) Reds-Rockies game was postponed Saturday because of a water main break outside the stadium, on a sunny day. They played a split doubleheader Sunday because Todd Helton's number 17 was retired yesterday- that game was sold out.

    11) If you make the Hall of Fame, they'll make a bobblehead of you; former White Sox/A's/Cardinal skipper Tony Larussa had a bobblehead night in Oakland August 9, a figurine day in St Louis yesterday and has a bobblehead day in Chicago Aug. 30.

    10) It takes 27 outs to win a ballgame; quality starting pitchers get you 21+ outs on a regular basis; pretty good starters get you 18+ outs. Suspect starters that cannot finish the 6th inning leave the bullpen exposed to overuse.

Teams like Houston/Bronx who struggle late in games, have starters who struggle getting those 18 outs; that puts undue strain on the bullpen.

    9) Rough week for the A's, who are 7-10 since Lester/Cespedes trade; not sure if its a blip in schedule- all teams have rough times in a six-month season, or if its a real problem, as in, "...we traded our best hitter and now we can't score."

    8) I can make trades in my fantasy league and it does not affect the team, since they are oblivious to what I'm doing-- there is no such thing as team chemistry in fantasy sports, but in Oakland, they basically blew up their offense. Hard as I try, I can't remember a contending team who traded their cleanup hitter during the season.

When the Samardzija trade happened, I wrote, "he (Cespedes) gives the low-budget A's their swagger--once he walks and breaks the bank, a lot of their invincibility goes too," Well, he didn't walk, he got traded and it seems a lot of Oakland's swagger has gone away, at least until someone else steps up and gets some big base hits.

    7) It'll all come out in the end next month, whether the trades worked or not, but I wonder if one more trade for a right-handed bat isn't in Billy Beane's future? A's need more pop in their lineup; doesn't matter who pitches if you can't score.

    6) Remember how NFL teams always had those Polaroids faxed down to the bench so players could study formations? Polaroids have been replaced by tablets; saw a few guys (including Bill Belichick) looking at tablets during games this weekend.

    5) Took 55 at-bats, but Cubs' 2B prospect Javier Baez finally got his first major league walk; he struck out 21 times before that first walk.

    4) Shouldn't major league teams have interpreters for all players who struggle to speak English? Asian players seem to have more interpreters than Hispanic guys who struggle just as much, making a living in a foreign country. Can't be easy.

    3) The way NFL rules are set up now, if you don't throw a lot of vertical passes, you're a damn fool. Defensive backs aren't allowed to breathe on receivers, there are ton of penalties called on DBs, to point where I think eventually, they'll switch to the college rule, where pass interference is 15 yards. Got to stretch the defense.

    2) Memo to directors on NFL games: Don't show hits on QBs in slow motion; it almost always looks like roughing the passer that way. Show it at real speed.

    1) Browns-Redskins on ESPN tonight; Johnny Manziel vs RGIII. Browns said they will alternate QBs every third series. Jon Gruden is analyst on game where his brother Jay is coaching the Redskins; not sure how that will go. Browns' game last week got good ratings on NFL Network. Its still just a preseason game.

Late restart catapults Gordon to Michigan victory

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- So much for restarts being a problem for Jeff Gordon.

The four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion broke away after a late caution to win Sunday's Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Gordon, who faced questions about his struggles on restarts earlier this season, passed Joey Logano at the start of lap 183 and kept his Chevrolet in front when Logano got next to him on the following lap. Logano fell back after falling out of a draft and Gordon never was challenged again as he rolled to his third series victory of the season.

His win at Indianapolis last month followed a similar script.

"I thought he had a good start, but I had one, too," Gordon said. "It's pretty nice to have the last two wins come down to restarts.

"Those restarts are so crucial but also intense because of the speed we're carrying here."

The pole winner went to victory lane at MIS for the third time -- his first since June 2001 -- and collected the 91st win of his career. He also gave Hendrick Motorsports, which saw Jimmie Johnson win here in June, a sweep of this year's races at the track closest to General Motors Corp.'s world headquarters.

Kurt Busch hit the turn 2 wall shortly after a lap 178 restart and the ensuing yellow flag bunched the field for a final sprint to the finish.

"I wish the last caution didn't come out," said Logano, who started second and led a race-best 86 laps. "I thought we had a better shot at it.

"I won every single restart I was on the front row except the last one."

Kevin Harvick was second for the fourth straight race here, followed by Paul Menard, Logano and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt, who started the day with a four-point series lead on Gordon, dropped to second after the checkered flag.

"We had a solid day but the 24 (Gordon) just had a little more speed than us," Harvick said.

Gordon had a little more speed all weekend. He set a new track record with a 206.558 mph qualifying lap and was the only car faster than 200 mph in Saturday's final practice session. He led 68 laps and seemed to keep the car wherever he wanted on the track throughout the race.

Owner Rick Hendrick said Gordon's performance reminded him of the driver as a young man, but added he felt his experience and patience have served him well all season.

"There's got to be some advantages to being 43 out there," said Gordon, who's seeking his first series title since 2001. "I'd like to think patience and using your head is one of them."

The victory was Hendrick Motorsports' ninth of the season and the team left the track with three of the top four spots in the standings. Kasey Kahne is nine points out of the final spot in the Chase with three races remaining.

The longest of the race's eight caution periods came midway through the afternoon when rookie Kyle Larson's Chevrolet struck the turn 4 wall and caught fire. Crews needed 11 laps to clean up the debris.

The slowdown helped Johnson, who started 30th and broke the shifter in his Chevy early in the race. The long caution period allowed his crew to replace it and he ended the day sixth.

A lap 26 crash that began with Danica Patrick's spin in turn 1 collected eight other cars, including Matt Kenseth, who started the day third in the Sprint Cup standings but still needing a victory to guarantee a spot in the new Chase for the Sprint Cup Series format.

Game of the Day: Reds at Cardinals
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals (-145, 7.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals continue their seven-game homestand with a key three-game set beginning Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. St. Louis' Trevor Rosenthal, fourth in the majors with 36 saves, allowed two runs in the ninth inning Sunday and was lifted in St. Louis' 7-6 victory over San Diego, and has yielded runs in three of his last five appearances. "We've worked him pretty hard and we're going to be very careful about how we move forward," manager Mike Matheny told reporters about Rosenthal after the Cardinals increased their wild-card lead to 2 1/2 games while remaining three behind Milwaukee in the Central.

The Reds will likely be a bit bleary-eyed after they were swept in a day-night doubleheader in Colorado, which prevented them from reaching their hotel rooms in St. Louis until the early hours of Monday morning. Cincinnati, which is 4 1/2 games behind San Francisco for the second wild-card spot, will determine prior to the game whether star second baseman Brandon Phillips -- out since July 10 with a thumb injury -- is ready to return after a weekend rehab stint in Triple-A Louisville and Class A Dayton. Justin Masterson makes his fourth start with St. Louis since being acquired prior to the trade deadline and opposes Mike Leake, who lost his last two turns.

                  LINE HISTORY:
The Cardinals opened as -135 favorites with bettors not shying away from them moving them up to -145.

                  INJURY WATCH:
Reds - 3B Todd Frazier (Doubtful, back), 2B Brandon Phillips (15-day DL, thumb). Cardinals - C Yadier Molina (15-day DL, thumb).

                  POWER RANKINGS:
                  Reds (-141), Cardinals (-180)

                  PITCHING MATCHUP:
Reds RH Mike Leake (9-11, 3.59 ERA) vs Cardinals RH Justin Masterson (6-7, 5.58)

Leake permitted five runs and eight hits in five innings of a 5-4 setback to Boston on Wednesday after losing to Miami 2-1. The 26-year-old Californian is 3-5 with a 4.85 ERA in 11 games against the Cardinals - 1-1, 1.29 this season, including a 4-0 victory in St. Louis on April 9 when he yielded four hits in eight innings. Matt Holliday (11-for-28, homer, three doubles, six RBIs) has enjoyed success against Leake, as has Matt Adams (4-for-12, homer, double, two RBIs).

Masterson allowed three hits and struck out three in seven shutout innings of a 5-2 victory at Miami on Wednesday to improve to 2-1 and lower his ERA from 11.25 to 6.00 in three outings with St. Louis. "(Wednesday) was just a great sign of the kind of pitcher he can be when he gets it all put together," Matheny told reporters about the Jamaican-born 29-year-old. "It couldn't have happened at a better time." Masterson is 3-2 with a 2.86 ERA in five starts against Cincinnati -- including a 5-2 victory May 29, 2013 in the last meeting -- while the Reds' active roster (10-for-56, one homer, four RBIs and 12 strikeouts) has struggled against him.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
                  * Cardinals are 4-1 in their last five vs. National League Central.
                  * Reds are 1-5 in Mike Leake's last six starts with four days of rest.
                  * Under is 6-1 in Cardinals last seven home games.

                  CONSENSUS:
69.3 percent of users are taking the Cardinals -145 with 54 percent taking the over 7.5 runs

Game of the Day: Browns at Redskins
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Browns at Washington Redskins (-2.5, 41.5)

Robert Griffin III will get his first chance to unleash his new offensive approach Monday night as the Washington Redskins entertain the Cleveland Browns in the final game of the second week of the NFL's exhibition schedule. Griffin and the rest of the first-team offense operated a run-heavy strategy in the opener against New England, attempting just four passes. It didn't matter, as the Redskins led from start to finish en route to a 23-6 triumph.

Quarterbacking is also the main focus in the Browns' camp, where the battle for the Week 1 starting role rages on between current favorite Brian Hoyer and popular rookie Johnny Manziel. Hoyer will start Monday's showdown against the Redskins and will likely play most or all of the first half, while Manziel will take the helm for the majority of the second half. Manziel outperformed Hoyer in Cleveland's 13-12 loss to Detroit last weekend.

                    TV:
                    8 p.m. ET, ESPN

                    LINE HISTORY:
The line opened at Washington -3 but has since fallen a half-point. The O/U has risen by one point to 41 1/2.

                    INJURY REPORT:
Cleveland: CB Buster Skrine (thumb) is out; DE Desmond Bryant (wrist) is questionable. Washington: DE Jason Hatcher (knee), ILB Darryl Sharpton (ankle) and RB Chris Thompson (ankle) are out; SS Brandon Meriweather (toe) is questionable.

                    ABOUT THE BROWNS (0-1):
Hoyer has been generating plenty of attention so far in the preseason - much of it negative - but the veteran signal-caller isn't bothered by suggestions he may wind up either as the No. 2 quarterback or as a member of another team. "It doesn't matter," he told reporters last week. "What matters is what coach Mike Pettine thinks and what (offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan) thinks." Hoyer will need a strong showing against the Redskins, with Pettine expected to name his Week 1 starter Tuesday.

                    ABOUT THE REDSKINS (1-0):
It's a brand new day for Griffin and the Redskins' offense, which will look decidedly different under new head coach Jay Gruden. For starters, Griffin will be encouraged to call audibles depending on how opposing defenses are set up - something former offensive coordinator Shanahan avoided. "It's a quarterback's dream," Griffin said. "You want to have some control at the line of scrimmage to get out of some things and protect yourself with different protections."

                    TRENDS:

                    * Washington racked up 430 total yards in its exhibition opener; Cleveland had just 291.
                    * The Redskins are 11-2 in their last 13 preseason games.
                    * The Browns have allowed more than 20 points just once in their last five exhibition contests.

                    CONSENSUS:
61.84 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the host Redskins.

This team is getting dominated against LHP at home

Left-handed pitching has caused headaches for the Minnesota Twins' offense at Target Field in recent games, evidenced by the Twins winning just one out of their last seven games against southpaws at home.

Lefty Jason Vargas will be on the hill for the Kansas City Royals when they take on the Twinkies in Minnesota Monday. The Royals are currently -161 faves with a total of 8.5.

D-Backs winless behind Nuno since trade with NY

Since coming to the Arizona Diamondbacks from the New York Yankees in a trade last month, life in the desert has not been kind to Vidal Nuno. The D-Backs are winless in their seven games with Nuno on the bump.

The 27-year-old gets the ball once again when Arizona visits the Washington Nationals in D.C. Monday. Jordan Zimmerman will counter for the Nats.

Washington is currently heavy -223 faves with an O/U of seven.
