    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- If Jimmy Graham dunks the ball after every TD pass this year and gets 15-yard penalties every time, will Brees stop throwing to him in the red zone? Not a help to kick off from the 20 after a touchdown.

-- A's have lost five of last six games, are tied in loss column with Angels, who are in a soft spot (Phillies/Rangers) of their schedule. Teams meet next weekend.

-- There is a kid in the Little League World Series who is 6-4, 229. At age 13.

-- Red Sox challenged two calls on the same play last night, lost both, then lost in extra innings to the Astros.

-- Cuban prospect Rusney Castillo is taking offers, with Bronx, Boston, Detroit said to be the three most interested team. Castillo is an outfielder.

-- Hyun-Jin Ryu heads to the DL with a pulled gluteal muscle, a genuine pain in the butt to my fantasy team, with the playoffs already underway.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) Rob Manfred will be next baseball commissioner; other than that, I know zero about the guy. It took him six votes of MLB teams to get the necessary 23 of 30 teams to vote for him; it was 20-10 after one vote, then 22-8 after three, before supposedly the Nationals got tired of being there and voted for Manfred so they could go home (votes took 4.5 hours).

Tampa Bay/Milwaukee were said to be two teams that flipped to get Manfred up to 22 votes. He’s going to be replacing former used car salesman Allen H Selig, someone who loves baseball, owned a team and did his best to improve the game; pretty tough act to follow.

    12) Media whining about “pace of game” has gotten old quickly; do these two things and you lop 13-15 minutes off every game, immediately:
    a) Ban managers/pitching coaches from ever visiting the mound during an inning, except for injuries and......
    b) Cut 30 seconds per half inning of TV commercials; this has as much chance of happening as I have of dating Pamela Anderson, but it is one of the main reasons games take longer, the commercial breaks are longer.

    11) Was watching old Florida-Alabama SEC title game late Thursday night on the new SEC Network; eerie watching Aaron Hernandez playi for the Gators, while announcers gushed about “…..what a great pro player this kid is going to be.”

    10) Washington Nationals have won their last 11 games at Citi Field; they held the Mets to four runs in their 3-game sweep there this week.

    9) Took more than a month, but Cubs finally brought Dan Straily to big leagues, hopefully to replace the hideous Edwin Jackson in the starting rotation. Its about freakin’ time. Straily ain't great, but he's better (and cheaper) than Jackson.

    8) This is why coaches jump for bigger contracts: former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe will now be analyzing ACC games on TV. He did tough duty at Wake Forest, getting one of the smallest schools in I-A football to the Orange Bowl game, a miracle of Bill Snyder-esque proportions, but eventually the Deacons didn’t win enough and he got shown the door, seven years after he turned down the Nebraska job.

It takes loyalty to turn Nebraska down and stay at Wake Forest, at least in football; Grobe is a terrific coach and would be a good option for someone next season.

    7) Justin Simon, a California PG who has committed to Arizona, will spend his last year of high school at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, a major weather downgrade. Why do kids do this? How does it help them?

He’s already got his scholarship for next year, why give up your last year of being a kid to play prep ball in New Hampshire? I’m sure there’s an excellent reason (play against better competition, maybe get better coaching) but it seems like sometimes, kids just grow up too soon.

    6) Brian Hoyer is starting at QB Monday night for Cleveland; he and Johnny Manziel will play two series at a time, alternating playing with the first team OL.

    5) Have Troy Tulowitzki and/or Carlos Gonzalez played their last games for the Rockies? They have this year; both are getting operated on, are finished for this season. Been a brutal year for Walt Weiss in Denver; makes you appreciate the job Clint Hurdle did there more and more.

    4) Why are the Chargers/Cardinals playing in the last preseason game, then again in the season opener? What genius made that schedule?

    3) In 1976, Clemson's weight room cost $250,000 to build. Alabama's new weight room costs $9 million.

    2) Thursday night in St Louis, umpire Bob Davidson called the tying run out at the plate in the bottom of the 8th inning on a close play, but then IMMEDIATELY went to the kid with the replay headphones to ask for a review.

I thought he called the runner out for going out of the baseline—the catcher missed the tag, and replay people let the out call stand, so that had to be it, but the San Diego announcers were outraged and never broached that possibility. Was huge play in the game, for sure and St Louis wound up winning 4-3.

    1) Injured pitcher Matt Harvey has to be driving the Mets nuts; he keeps saying he wants to pitch this year, their medical people say he should take it slow (another Met, Jeremy Hefner, re-injured his arm this month and needs another surgery) after Tommy John surgery, but Harvey seems like a spoiled brat who won’t shut up—he did a radio interview during a Met game, saying how he was throwing 95 and was almost ready.

Manager Terry Collins, whose ultimate job security will rely greatly on Harvey’s ongoing good health, apparently told the kid to put a sock in it, but then admitted to the media that Harvey can pretty much do what he wants, they can’t watch him 24 hours a day. Oy.

Gordon sets record in pole run at Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- With a lighting-fast track record at Michigan International Speedway, Jeff Gordon claimed his second consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pole of the season on Friday afternoon after turning a lap of 206.558 mph in qualifying for Sunday's Pure Michigan 400.

Gordon, 42, crushed Kevin Harvick's track record by three-tenths of a second at the two-mile oval set just two months ago. Gordon's qualifying lap was the seventh-fastest pole-winning speed in Sprint Cup history.

Gordon knocked Joey Logano from the top spot in the final two minutes of the third and final round of qualifying, establishing the 17th track record of the season. Gordon also took the pole last weekend at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

"I don't know how to make it much better than that," said Gordon, who won his 76th career pole in 748 races. "This entire Axalta Chevrolet crew just did a phenomenal job. Our first qualifying effort today, and practice, was not good. I've been hearing a lot about tire chatter and we had it big time.

"The next run out we made some adjustments and it was better. That whole qualifying session, from the first one, second one, and the third session, the car was just near perfect. This is our Brickyard 400 car, so it's a fast one. And let's hope we can keep it going fast all day on Sunday."

Logano will start on the front row for the seventh time this season, but six of them have been from the outside pole. He is optimistic about his chances on Sunday.

"Close, but didn't quite make it," Logano said. "This is our seventh front row start this year, which we are very proud of -- don't get me wrong. It takes a lot of effort to do that, but we only have one pole. That is frustrating.

"I have a really fast Shell Pennzoil Ford this weekend and we have been able to keep showing (Team) Penske is very strong in qualifying. I have a good car in race trim too. I have something similar to what I had in this race last year that we won the pole and race with. Hopefully, we can do it in the race."

Third-place qualifier Carl Edwards celebrated his 35th birthday at the track and led the Roush Fenway Racing camp with his best start since a fourth at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway in June.

Behind the top-three starters, Brian Vickers qualified fourth and Rochester Hills, Mich., native Brad Keselowski rounded out the top five.

Kevin Harvick wound up sixth, followed by Paul Menard, Austin Dillon, Jamie McMurray, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Greg Biffle and Ryan Newman.

Danica Patrick narrowly missed the cut into the final round of knockout qualifying, but will line up 14th.

While Gordon won his sixth career pole at Michigan International Speedway, his Hendrick Motorsports teammates struggled in time trials.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., the points leader entering Sunday's race, could only manage the 25th quickest lap Friday. Six-time and reigning Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson qualified 30th and Kasey Kahne qualified 15th.

"We were a little loose on that second run," said Earnhardt, a three-time winner this season. "We made a good lap on the first run and expected to go out there and pick up two or three tenths and the back end was just moving around a lot and real loose and I guess just couldn’t get into the throttle like we needed to. But I'm real happy with the car in race trim."

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Calgary Stampeders at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (+3, 51.5)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats play their final home game at Ron Joyce Stadium when they host the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday. Hamilton has been playing at the McMaster University field while construction is completed on Tim Hortons Field, which the Tiger-Cats are scheduled to open by hosting the Toronto Argonauts on Labour Day. The Stampeders are on a brief East Division road trip looking to build on a 2-0 away record.

Calgary’s defense allows a league-low 76.3 rushing yards per contest, which could pose big problems for Hamilton quarterback Dan LeFevour, who has more touchdowns rushing (four) than passing (two). Bo Levi Mitchell has been a model of consistency under centre for the Stampeders and he could be in for a big game against a Tiger-Cats' defense that averages 278.8 passing yards allowed. Calgary manhandled the Ottawa Redblacks last week to improve to 4-0 against East Division foes, while Hamilton is 0-5 against the West.

Running back Matt Walter was back at practice after clearing concussion protocols but his status for Saturday remains uncertain. The status of kick returner Jock Sanders is also uncertain. Defensive lineman Charleston Hughes added his team-leading sixth sack in Week 7.

            ABOUT THE TIGER-CATS (1-5, 3-3 ATS):
Linebackers Marc Beswick and Simoni Lawrence were fined by the league for making comments critical of officials after Week 7. Kick returner Brandon Banks was named special teams player of the week after returning a punt 97 yards for a touchdown. Hamilton’s defense is last in the league with 10 sacks.

            CONSENSUS:
Almost 59 percent of the bets are on the Stampeders -3.

Montreal Alouettes at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-13.5, 48.5)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are riding a three-game winning streak as they prepare to host the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday. Montreal is heading in the opposite direction with four consecutive losses and no answers for its sputtering offense, which has produced a league-low 98 points. The Roughriders have 98 points in their last three contests and are looking a lot more like the team that won the Grey Cup in 2013.

Saskatchewan’s offense leads the league in average rushing yards with 135.7 despite using a series of different running backs, allowing quarterback Darian Durant to have a quiet start to the season with just six touchdown passes to five interceptions. Montreal allows an East Division worst 115.8 rushing yards per contest and the Alouettes’ offense will have a difficult time keeping pace if the Roughriders establish their running game. Montreal will reportedly start Alex Brink at quarterback, relegating Troy Smith to backup duty.

            TV:
            7 p.m. ET, TSN

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-5, 1-5 ATS):
Brink’s last start was in Week 19 of 2012 and he is 9-for-23 for 60 yards this season. Montreal added former CFL star Jeff Garcia to its coaching staff in an effort to solve its quarterback search. Running back Brandon Whitaker has provided a measure of stability on offense with 378 rushing yards.

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (4-2, 4-2 ATS):
Defensive end John Chick was named defensive player of the week after recording a career-high three sacks in Week 7. Running back Jerome Messam earned Canadian player of the week honours after rushing for 126 yards. Defensive back Mark LeGree leads the league with three interceptions in his first CFL season.

            * Alouettes are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
            * Over is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings in Saskatchewan.
            * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

                      Saturday, August 16

Giants struggling with Hudson starting at home

The San Francisco Giants are 0-4 in their last four ball games at home when right-hander Tim Hudson gets the start.

Hudson is scheduled to get the start at AT&T Park against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies Saturday afternoon.

In those four ball games, the Giants have lost to the San Diego Padres (-119), Cincinnati Reds (-119), Oakland A's (+100) and Pittsburgh Pirates (-117).

The Giants are currently big -201 home faves for the meeting with the Phillies.

Thunderstorms could impact this ball game Saturday

The Kansas City Royals and their backers will look to make it four-straight wins Saturday, but Mother Nature could have the last word in their game versus the Minnesota Twins.

According to DailyBaseballData.com, weather forecasts are calling for a 40 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms by the start of the game, and that will increase to a 50 percent chance as the game progresses.

As it stands, the Royals are slight -106 road faves at Target Field and oddsmakers have placed a total of 7.5 on the game.

Top Under umpire working the plate Saturday

With an Over/Under record of 4-18 when he's been tasked with calling balls and strikes this season, you'd be hard pressed to find an umpire that has catered to Under bettors more efficiently than Kerwin Danley.

Danley is scheduled to work home plate at Tropicana Field as the Tampa Bay Rays host the New York Yankees Saturday afternoon. Oddsmakers have tabbed the matchup with a total of seven.

When looking at umpires that worked behind home plate in at least 10 ball games this season, only Tony Randazzo has better winning percentage for Under bettors (2-11 O/U, 84.6 percent).

According to our umpire stats database, there is an average of 5.78 runs scored per game when Danley is working the plate. That's the lowest per game total of any umpire with at least 10 games calling pitches.

Danley has already cashed in for Under bettors this week. He was calling balls and strikes at Turner Field as the Atlanta Braves lost 4-2 to the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, which closed with a total of eight.

He was calling balls and strikes at Turner Field as the Atlanta Braves lost 4-2 to the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, which closed with a total of eight

                        Randazzo umpiring Hernandez-Price duel Saturday

We've been following Kerwin Danley's penchant for cashing Under bettors' tickets this season, but there is one umpire that has a better winning percentage for under wagers for umpires with at least 10 games behind the dish: Tony Randazzo.

Randazzo has an Over/Under record of 2-11 in his 13 ball games behind home plate this season. That's good enough for an 84.6 winning percentage if a bettor had taken the Under in all 13 of those games.

He'll be tasked with calling balls and strikes as the Seattle Mariners visit the Detroit Tigers with a couple of marquee pitchers toeing the rubber Saturday. Felix Hernandez is scheduled to get the start for the Mariners while David Price is slated to pitch for the Tigers.

The game currently has a total of 6.5.

This team has been a hot Under bet on the road

The Under has gone a remarkable 8-0 in the Calgary Stampeders last eight road games heading into their Week 8 visit to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Saturday.

The Stamps have posted an Over/Under record of 2-4 this season and are 0-2 O/U on the road.

The LV Superbook opened the total for this matchup at 51 which is where it still stands. Books online opened it anywhere from 51 or 52.

MLB Week-end betting cheat sheet: Toronto feeling blue
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend's major-league games:

                          Toronto Feeling Blue

The Toronto Blue Jays' recent road woes continued Wednesday, as they dropped a 2-0 decision to the Seattle Mariners, to cap a demoralizing three-game sweep. The Blue Jays have scored just eight runs during a six-game road losing skid that has dropped their overall value to +273 units for the season. They begin a three-game set with at the Chicago White Sox (+129, 8.5) Friday.

                          Rays Rolling With the Under

The Tampa Bay Rays remain one of the strongest under plays in the league over the past 10 days as they prepare to open a three-game series against the visiting New York Yankees (+122, 7). Tampa went 1-2-1 over/under in its four-game series in Texas and went 2-6-2 O/U on its 10-game road swing.

Felix vs. Price? Expect low score

Expect a great Under play at any total Saturday when Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners visit David Price and the Detroit Tigers. Hernandez has gone seven innings while allowing two or fewer runs in 17-straight starts, while Price had a string of 13 consecutive quality starts snapped in Toronto.

                          Fister Flying

Washington Nationals right-hander Doug Fister has been nearly automatic over the past month and a half as he leads the Washington Nationals into Sunday's tilt with the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. Fister is 7-2 straight up over his last nine starts while giving up no fewer than three runs in any of those outings.

                          Pitching Notes

                          * Godspeed, Milwaukee. The Brewers face a monumental task Saturday night as they square off with Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw, who is 14-2 with a 1.78 ERA and is 16-3 SU over his 19 starts so far this season.

                          * Oakland Athletics lefty Jon Lester will look to make it four straight wins with his new team Sunday as he takes on the host Atlanta Braves. Lester has won each of his first three starts in an Oakland uniform, posting a 2.49 ERA while allowing zero home runs over that stretch.

                          Hitting Notes

                          * Houston Astros slugger Chris Carter has been a hard man to keep down over the past week as he prepares to face Clay Buchholz and the host Boston Red Sox (-142, 8.5). Carter has swatted four home runs and racked up 10 RBIs over the past seven days - tops in the league over that stretch.

                          * Don't expect many long bombs in Saturday's Mariners-Tigers tilt - especially from the Seattle lineup. Price has allowed just one home run in 169 combined at-bats against members of the Mariners' roster; that homer came courtesy second baseman Robinson Cano.

                          * Joe Mauer will face a friendly foe Sunday when the Minnesota Twins entertain Jeremy Guthrie and the Kansas City Royals. Mauer is 8-for-24 lifetime versus Guthrie, with two home runs and an OPS over 1.000.

                          Totals Streak

Baltimore Orioles (4-0-1 O/U): The Orioles finally settled for a push in their last game - a 5-3 victory over the Yankees - after putting together four straight overs on the strength of three double-digit scoring outbursts. The recent Over string moves Baltimore to 53-63-3 O/U for the season.

                          Injury Notes

                          * Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Neil Walker may be back in the lineup Friday against the host Washington Nationals (-148, 7) after missing the previous eight games with a back injury. The Pirates have gone 5-3 SU, 5-3 O/U and +195 units with Walker out of action.

                          * Colorado Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer will be activated from the disabled list in time for Saturday's game against visiting Cincinnati. Cuddyer has missed the past 59 games with a fractured shoulder; the Rockies are 18-42 SU, 27-24-8 O/U and -2,153 units without him.

                          Weather Watch

                          * Fans at Fenway Park will see wind blowing out to center field at 6 mph when the host Boston Red Sox face Houston on Saturday night. Teams went 1-5 O/U in six games with the wind blowing out to center in 2013, averaging just 1.5 homers - well below the stadium average of 1.85.

                          Umpire Note of the Day

The home team is 5-1 in umpire Cory Blaser's last six games calling balls and strikes. Blaser will be behind home plate Friday night when the Red Sox entertain the Astros.

This pitcher is dynamite on grass fields

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick has been a fantastic play for Over bettors on grass in recent matchups, evidenced by seven of his last eight starts on the natural surface going above the total.

Kendrick gets the ball when the Phils visit the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park - a grass field - Saturday. The Giants are currently -201 faves on the moneyline with an O/U of 7.5.

                            Truex hospitalized after crash

Ryan Truex was hospitalized after crashing his car in practice Saturday at Michigan International Speedway, according to NASCAR.

Truex's No. 83 Toyota slammed into the wall during the first of two practice sessions at the track, causing damage to the right front of the car. Truex climbed out of the car and walked with safety personnel to a waiting ambulance.

BK Racing representatives said Truex complained of a headache and shoulder pain.

Truex is ranked 37th in Sprint Cup points and has started 19 of 22 races this season. His best finish was 20th at Pocono Raceway two weeks ago.

Jeff Gordon won the pole Friday with a track-record lap at 206.558 mph. The Pure Michigan 400 is Sunday.
