    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- When Dodgers play on east coast, you think Vin Scully watches the games and critiques the announcers? He doesn't travel east of the Rockies anymore.

-- NBA All-Star break will be eight days this winter; not really sure why.

-- Central Florida is 1-point favorite over Penn State in a game being played over in Ireland August 30. Weird seeing UCF favored over Penn State in football, but they did beat the Lions in Happy Valley last season

-- Indians' catcher Yan Gomes is son-in-law of former Giant P Atlee Hammaker.

-- Catcher "blocking plate" rule is causing problems in baseball, cost White Sox in a loss at San Francisco Wednesday. As it stands now, rule lacks common sense.

-- SEC TV Network starts up today; hoping to learn a lot about college football on that channel. Texas A&M-South Carolina is network's first game August 28.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Idle thoughts on a summer day......

    13) ESPN.com ran an interesting article about how colleges are so impatient with coaches now; Mike Krzyzewski went 38-47 in his first three years at Duke and he replaced a guy (Bill Foster) who had been in the Final Four two years earlier. If that were today, would Coach K have been fired? He definitely would’ve been on the hot seat going into Year 4.

    12) Former Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen is the offensive coordinator at Rutgers, which will help the Scarlet Knights a lot. Smart guy, should still be a head coach.

    11) Someone wrote an article this week asking how many more points would Pete Maravich have scored in college if he played in the era with the 3-point shot?

He averaged 44+ a game at LSU, in a game with no shot clock or 3-pointer. Well, Pistol Pete was a much better version of Jimmer Fredette; a great shooter, fancy ballhandler, great fun to watch, but the SEC he played in was largely devoid of African-American players who would have done a better job of containing him.

LSU lost 101-79 to Al McGuire’s Marquette team in the NIT, a team with New York City playground players on it; no way does he come close to 44 a game in today’s game, even with the 3-point shot.

    10) Within an hour of the PGA tournament ending, I got an e-mail from New Era hat company, selling Ryder Cup team hats from Team USA.

Um, no thanks; wonder how many of those they sell. I have a great baseball cap collection, but won’t be adding one of those it.

    9) Major league leaders in pitches seen per at bat: Mike Napoli 4.49, Mike Trout 4.45, Brett Gardner 4.45, Carlos Santana 4.37.

    8) Sounds more and more like the Raiders could be moving back to Los Angeles; with Donald Sterling out of the picture, Raiders are the most dysfunctional sports franchise in America. Hard to believe if you're my age.

    7) Baltimore Orioles have a better road record (35-24) than they do at home (34-26). Whatever they’re paying Buck Showalter, it ain’t enough.

    6) I was a student manager for our basketball team in college; fun job, but I once rebounded for a guy who made 102 foul shots in a row at the end of practice. No bueno. Not only that, but he didn’t talk while shooting, so I basically held my hand under the basket, caught the ball out of the net and flipped it back to him in silence over and over for like an hour, and God forbid if it was a bad pass back.

Miss those days; going to practice every day really was great fun.

    5) Parts of Long Island got over 10 inches of rain Tuesday; TEN!!!!! Town of Islip almost exceeded its record monthly rainfall in one day. Yikes.

    4) Since 2009, Justin Verlander has thrown 22,918 pitches, most of any major league pitcher. He may be paying the price for that now, with a sore shoulder.

    3) Nationals’ OF Jayson Werth got a citation for driving 105 mph in a 55 mph zone. Not sure what his defense would be for that one; how did they catch him?

    2) I’m a firm believer than time/money management skills should become an integral part of a kid’s high school education. It’s the most important thing we do; manage time and money. Why don’t we teach kids how to do it, instead of the some of the less-useful stuff we do teach?

    1) Everett Golson was officially named Notre Dame’s #1 QB for this season, as a stupidly-run charade finally plays out. Kid was their QB two years when they got drilled by Alabama in the national title game; you don’t think he was getting his job back this year? Hogwash.

They let the kid hang out to dry for a while, now they expect him to win games again, so they can continue to pocket a fortune from NBC. But they’ll tell you they’re not a football factory.

If Notre Dame isn’t a football factory, I’m not bald. End of story.

Scorching Royals dominant as home favorite

You'd be hard pressed to find a team hotter than the Kansas City Royals over the past few weeks. The American League Central leaders are 9-1 in their last 10 games overall and 17-4 in their last 21. Even more impressive is the fact that when oddsmakers tab the Royals as a home fave, they've cashed in for backers in seven straight ball games.

That is exactly the spot the Royals are in Thursday afternoon. They are currently slight -107 home faves as they finish up their four-game series with the Oakland A's from Kauffman Stadium.

Probable pitchers for the game are Jeff Samardzija for the A's and James Shields for the Royals.

Game of the Day: Jaguars at Bears
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jacksonville Jaguars at Chicago Bears (-3.5, 42.5)

Jacksonville's quarterback situation takes center stage Thursday night as the Jaguars resume their NFL preseason schedule with a game against the Bears in Chicago. The Jaguars have already laid out who will play when, with incumbent Chad Henne expected to take the snaps in the first half and rookie Blake Bortles playing the entire second half. Jacksonville had a multitude of errors on the offensive end in its exhibition opener, a 16-10 win over Tampa Bay.

The Bears have their own storylines playing out under center, though Jay Cutler's starting job is quite safe. The battle of the backups will be front and center against the Jaguars, with former high school phenom Jimmy Clausen expected to see plenty of time Thursday as he competes with Jordan Palmer for the No. 2 spot behind Cutler. The Bears were also victorious in their preseason opener, outslugging the Philadelphia Eagles 34-28 at Soldier Field.

                      TV:
                      8 p.m. ET, ESPN

                      LINE HISTORY:
The Bears opened -4, but the line has since dipped a half-point. The O/U has risen a half-point to 42 1/2.

                      INJURY REPORT:
Jaguars: LB Paul Posluszny (biceps), WR Cecil Shorts (hamstring), DT Roy Miller (shoulder) and CB Aaron Colvin (knee) are all expected to miss the game; Bears: WR Marquess Wilson (collarbone) and T Jordan Mills (foot) aren't expected to play; S Chris Conte (shoulder) is questionable.

                      ABOUT THE JAGUARS (1-0):
For as much attention is being paid to the battle between Henne and Bortles, the Jaguars are also paying close attention to the running game. Offseason acquisition and probable Week 1 starter Toby Gerhart will see his first in-game action in a Jacksonville uniform, and will get some sense of what he's dealing with on the offensive line. That cast of characters - featuring a host of inexperienced run-blockers - struggled against the Buccaneers to the point where they asked for - and were granted - an extra series to work out the kinks.

                      ABOUT THE BEARS (1-0):
It isn't enough that Chicago has one of the top wide receiver tandems in the league in Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey, but a new weapon may have emerged in last week's victory over Philadelphia. Tight end Zach Miller stole the show with a pair of touchdown catches versus the Eagles, and has looked sensational in practice leading up to the game against the Jaguars as he looks to provide Cutler with one more pass-catching weapon. Miller - not to be confused with Seattle tight end Zach Miller - was a sixth-round pick in 2009 who is now on his third NFL roster.

                      TRENDS:

                      * The Bears are 2-2-1 ATS in five preseason games under head coach Marc Trestman.
                      * The Jaguars have won two straight exhibition games SU and ATS after dropping their previous three.
                      * Chicago is 4-1 O/U in the preseason with Trestman at the helm.
                      * Jacksonville went 3-1 O/U in the 2013 exhibition season but was an Under in its 2014 opener.

                      CONSENSUS:
64.79 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the host Bears.
