    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- This weekend was first time ever there were games of 19+ innings two days in a row. Detroit had 22 hits Sunday and lost.

-- Blue Jay bullpen threw 15.2 scoreless innings Sunday; they had two sellouts in Rogers Centre this weekend, have ten for the season.

-- Jays had long flight to Seattle after the game, face Felix Hernandez Monday nite at Safeco Field. Good luck there.

-- Good times for Cleveland: their Arena Football team won 56-46 in semifinals of AFL playoffs, will play in the Arena Bowl next week.

-- Dodgers acquired Kevin Correia from the Twins, who called Tommy Milone up from AAA to take his place. Dodgers should've traded for Milone.

-- Milone makes his Twin debut tonight against Brad Peacock- they were both traded from Washington to Oakland on December 23, 2011, part of the trade that sent Gio Gonzalez to the Nationals.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

    13) Toronto's Melky Cabrera was 3-5 with five walks Sunday; he is the first guy since Rod Carew in 1972 in reach base eight times in one game. Odd thing is; even though he got on base eight times, Cabrera didn't score a run. Go figure.

    12) Detroit's loss cuts their AL Central lead to a half-game over the Royals. Tigers are 10-14 since the All-Star break.

    11) Kansas City is red-hot, winning 15 of last 18 games since starting out 0-4 after the All-Star break.

    10) Odd Stat of Day: Since 2001, Padres are 33-12 in Pittsburgh, have won their last 14 series at PNC Park, the longest active streak in MLB.

    9) Colorado Rockies won 5-3 in 10 innings at Arizona; getting only their 7th save this season where the saving pitcher didn't allow a baserunner. Mets have eight such saves, the second-least in big leagues.

    8) Josh Hamilton hasn't homered in 146 plate appearances in Anaheim this year; he has eight homers on the road. Guy is making $17.4M this season, is owed $92.8M from 2015-2017. Oy.

    7) Minnesota rookie Trevor May walked seven without a strikeout in his debut Friday night, a 9-4 loss in Oakland. He only faced fifteen batters after pitching 772 innings of minor league ball, an awful lot of innings for a guy considered to be one of their better prospects. Took May four years to get out of Class A ball, a long time.

    6) Lookalikes: golfer Victor Dubuisson and Brad Pitt, especially when they both wear sun visors (Pitt wore visor in spring training scene in Moneyball).

    5) Houston Texans lost exhibition opener 32-0 this weekend; coach Bill O'Brien wasn't amused, calling effort "unacceptable". Look for Houston to get overbet this weekend, as handicappers search desperately for an angle to use in these games.

    4) NFL needs teams to dress three QBs for every game, making #3 QB an exempt roster spot. If a team loses its starting QB early in the game, it ruins the game, since they have to be ultra-conservative with their #2 guy, if there is no #3 QB, and lot of teams aren't dressing a #3 QB in favor of an extra special teamer.

    3) Lot of rumors that the Patriots are showcasing backup QB Ryan Mallett for a trade (Houston would be one of the options) but Mallett hasn't shown that much in his limited play in preseason games to merit a team going after him.

    2) I'm thinking CBS needs to let final round of the PGA start earlier on Sunday in future years, so players don't have to run around the last few holes like a couple of guys trying to get 18 holes in after work. Nick Faldo sounded annoyed on TV as officials seemingly made rules up as they went along, trying to get everyone in the clubhouse before darkness settled in. It is a major, after all.

    1) Ricky Fowler joined Jack Nicklaus and Eldrick Woods as the only golfers in the modern era to finish top five at all four majors in a single season. He won a total of $2,497,240 for those four weekends, without winning any of them.

Allmendinger edges Ambrose at Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- A.J. Allmendinger held off Marcos Ambrose on three late-race restarts to win the Cheez-It 355 at The Glen NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday at Watkins Glen International.

"That was just a fun race," Allmendinger said. "Everybody at home, if you didn't love that, you are not a fan of racing."

It was Allmendinger's first career win and made him eligible for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Ambrose finished second.

"Honestly, the Chase doesn't mean anything to me," Allmendinger said. "It's just cool once we sit down and think about it, but just to everything I've gone through, all I've wanted to do for the last how many years is win a Sprint Cup race. It's so hard. Jimmie (Johnson) makes it look to easy, he wins so many."

After several laps of trying to catch Allmendinger, a caution on lap 77 put the two drivers side by side on the front row for the restart. Allmendinger was able to get out in front of Ambrose on the restart, only for Jimmie Johnson to spin to immediately bring out another caution.

"I left nothing on the table," Ambrose said. "I tried to rattle his cage and couldn't shake him. We raced fair and square to the end there. It was a tough couple of laps, but it was fair. We were both giving it to each other pretty hard. No harm, no foul. We just came up a little short."

After another restart with Allmendinger and Ambrose on the front row with five laps remaining, Ambrose battled Allmendinger side by side before taking the lead. Ambrose's lead lasted less than a lap, though, as Allmendinger retook the lead just before another late-race caution for Denny Hamlin and a red flag for repairs to the pit wall.

After the final restart, Allmendinger was able to remain ahead of Ambrose for the win.

"Yeah, I mean I knew our car was slick on restarts on the tires, and I knew Marcos was going to try to move me out of the way if he had the opportunity," Allmendinger said. "To his credit, he didn't wreck me. He just moved me like he should have.

"I went down into the next corner and leaned on him a little bit to see if I could get a gap and get them racing behind me. I knew if I could just get a three or four-car-length gap, they weren't going to get back to me."

Kurt Busch got by Carl Edwards on the final restart to finish third. Kyle Larson also slipped by Edwards for fourth, relegating Edwards to fifth.

Ambrose and Jeff Gordon dominated the early laps of the race, with Gordon starting on the pole and leading 29 laps by the time he encountered a battery issue on lap 50. Most of the other laps, to that point, were led by Ambrose.

Ambrose took his first lead of the race after a cycle of green-flag pit stops completed on lap 33. At that point, he had a 3.6-second lead over Gordon.

Ambrose then gave up the lead to pit during the caution that came out for Gordon's stalled car on lap 50. Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne and Hamlin stayed out during the caution for track position, planning to only make one additional stop during the remainder of the race.

Those who pitted under the caution were expected to need one additional stop, like drivers who stayed out. But a yellow flag that led to a lengthy red flag waved on lap 56 after a multi-car wreck involving Michael McDowell, Ryan Newman, Alex Bowman, Danica Patrick and David Ragan came within the window of going the rest of the way after stopping during the yellow flag.

The race was red-flagged for nearly an hour-and-a-half for repair to a guard rail around the track.

"That was a bad wreck," McDowell said. "It seems when I do it (wreck), they are usually fairly big. I'm not sure what happened."

Several drivers who pitted under the previous caution took fuel only, getting off pit road ahead of drivers like Earnhardt, Johnson, Kahne and Hamlin, who had to also take on tires after staying out during the previous caution.

Ambrose was ninth on the restart and Edwards restarted in the lead. As Ambrose worked his way back up toward the front, Allmendinger quickly took the lead from Edwards. After a handful of laps, Ambrose was in second with his sights on Allmendinger and the race lead.

"I am glad (crew chief) Jimmy Fennig put us in a position to be up there for the win," Edwards said. "I am sure like everyone up there that you want the last few laps to do over again. It was a blast and a lot of fun."

      NOTES:
Regan Smith filled-in for Tony Stewart, who withdrew from the race after being involved in a fatal incident at a nearby dirt track Saturday night. ... Marcos Ambrose has won two of the last four Sprint Cup races at Watkins Glen. ... Ambrose has finished third or higher in all of his Sprint Cup races at Watkins Glen, except one (2013). ... Ambrose led 48 of 82 laps and won the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen on Saturday. ... Ambrose has two-career Sprint Cup wins, both at Watkins Glen. ... Jeff Gordon has the most road course wins among active drivers with nine, four of those at Watkins Glen, but his last was in 2001 and he has only finished in the top-10 two times since. ... Brad Keselowski finished second at Watkins Glen for three consecutive years prior to suffering from a brake problem in Sunday's race.

Game of the Day: Tigers at Pirates
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Pittsburgh Pirates (+102, 7.5)

The Pittsburgh Pirates own the best home record in the National League but have lost two in a row at PNC Park as they prepare to host the Detroit Tigers on Monday in the opener of a four-game, home-and-home set. The Pirates scored five runs in dropping two of three to San Diego over the weekend and continue to struggle with injuries to reigning National League MVP Andrew McCutchen and second baseman Neil Walker. The Pirates won three of four versus Detroit in 2013 - two by 1-0 shutouts.

Adding left-hander David Price at the trade-deadline to give Detroit three consecutive Cy Young Award winners has yet to yield the expected results. The Tigers have dropped five of seven after blowing a five-run lead in Sunday's 19-inning marathon loss in Toronto. Detroit's lead has dwindled to one-half game over surging Kansas City atop the American League Central and its vaunted pitching staff took a hit when starter Anibal Sanchez and reliever Joakim Soria went on the disabled list Sunday.

              TV:
7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, ROOT (Pittsburgh)

              LINE HISTORY:
Pinnacle Sports opened the Pirates as +109 home dogs, but that has since moved to +102. The total has held at 7.5.

              INJURY REPORT:
Tigers - RP Joakim Soria (Day-to-day, oblique), LF Andy Dirks (Indefinitely, back). Pirates - 2B Neil Walker (Indefinitely, back), CF Andrew McCutchen (Indefinitely, ribs)

              POWER RANKINGS:
              Tigers (-196), Pirates (-182)

              PITCHING MATCHUP:
Tigers RH Justin Verlander (10-10, 4.57 ERA) vs. Pirates LH Jeff Locke (3-3, 3.78)

While Verlander's days as a dominant ace appear to be over, he has turned in four consecutive quality starts but has alternated wins and losses in that span. A pair of solo homers were the only runs Verlander allowed over seven innings in a loss at the New York Yankees on Wednesday. He has an overpowering track record against the Pirates, tossing a pair of complete games and winning all four of his starts while compiling a 1.97 ERA.

Locke rebounded from back-to-back losses - both on the road - to beat Miami last time out, surrendering three runs (one earned) in seven innings for his first win in a month. He has been victimized by the long ball of late, yielding eight in his last four starts after giving up only three in his first eight turns. Locke, who held Detroit scoreless for 5 1/3 innings last year, is 2-1 with a 0.93 WHIP in seven home starts.

              TRENDS:

              * Tigers are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings in Pittsburgh.
              * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Pittsburgh.
              * Tigers are 4-0 in their last four interleague games.
              * Over is 4-1-1 in Locke's last six starts overall.

              CONSENSUS:
59.15 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the Detroit Tigers.

Weather info you should know for Monday

Monday's weather forecast does not look promising for a couple of cities as both Pittsburgh and Atlanta could be hit with some thunderstorms.

Forecasts are calling for a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms, which will increase to 70 percent as the game progresses. The Pirates open an interleague series versus the Detroit Tigers from PNC Park Monday.

Elsewhere, Atlanta could be hit by some rain as well. Forecasts are calling for a 50 percent possibility of thunderstorms which dampen the meeting between the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Road teams loving this ump behind the plate

Umpire Mark Wegner has been a boon for bettors backing the road team lately, with visiting teams winning eight of the last 10 games he's called.

That's good news for the New York Mets as Wegner will be behind the dish when they visit the Philadelphia Phillies in Pennsylvania Monday.

This pitcher is lights out on the Under

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Bud Norris continues to be a fantastic bet for Under bettors. In Norris' last eight outings, the O/U is 1-7.

He'll get the ball when the O's host the New York Yankees Monday. BetOnline.com presently has the Birds as -135 faves on the moneyline with a total of 8.5 for the AL East matchup.

MLB Early-week betting cheat sheet: Felix, fatigue bad news for Jays
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the early-week major-league games:

                      'Dogs Have Their (Sun)Day

The underdog play was a strong one on a weird Sunday in the major leagues. Underdogs went a staggering 10-5 SU, a trend that included victories by Minnesota (+162), the Chicago Cubs (+144), Toronto (+144) and Colorado (+143).

                      Felix + Fatigue = ?

The Blue Jays could be in tough Monday night as they open a three-game series against Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners (-194, 6.5). Toronto made the cross-continental trip after playing 19 innings against Detroit on Sunday, and that fatigue factor could push the line higher in favor of Seattle.

                      Road Warrior Adam

St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright will look to continue his road dominance Tuesday as he faces the Marlins in Miami. Wainwright has been one of the best pitchers away from his home park this season, going 9-3 with a 1.32 ERA and just one home run allowed over 95 2/3 innings.

                      Pitching Notes

                      * Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander will try to cure his recent road woes Monday as he tangles with the host Pittsburgh Pirates (+102, 7.5). Verlander is 1-4 SU in his last five starts away from Comerica Park, though he has recorded five straight Unders in that span.

                      * Interleague play has agreed with Chicago White Sox lefty Chris Sale, who faces the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. Sale is perfect in 14 apperances (six starts) against the National League, going 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA and 60 strikeouts over 53 2/3 innings.

                      Hitting Notes

                      * Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley will be at a decided disadvantage Monday as he faces off against Jonathon Niese and the New York Mets (-118, 8). Utley has just three hits - all singles - in 28 career at-bats against Niese.

                      * A pair of Chicago Cubs are looking forward to Tuesday's matchup with Milwaukee Brewers hurler Wily Peralta. Starlin Castro is 10-for-21 with a pair of home runs in his career versus Peralta, while Anthony Rizzo is 8-for-19 with four homers and nine RBIs.

                      Totals Streak

New York Mets (5-1-2 O/U): The Mets continue to be the league's pushiest team - leading the majors with 13 - but have become a strong Over play of late, having allowed five or more runs in four of their last eight games. New York is 52-53-13 O/U for the season.

                      Prop of the Day

The Mariners are +325 to win by more than three runs, and Hernandez alone makes this a viable betting option. The sensational right-hander has made 15 consecutive starts of seven innings or more with two earned runs or fewer allowed - a major-league record.

                      Injury Notes

                      * St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has had the cast removed from his surgically-repaired right thumb and can begin light baseball-related activities. The Cardinals are 12-12 SU, 15-9 O/U and -68 units since Molina suffered the thumb injury just over a month ago.

                      * The Minnesota Twins will activate Joe Mauer from the disabled list in time for the opener of a three-game set Monday against the host Houston Astros (+101, 8.5). Mauer has missed the last 34 games with a strained oblique; the Twins are 14-20 SU, 16-18 O/U and -330 units in his absence.

                      Weather Watch

                      * Fans at Citizens Bank Park will be treated to winds blowing out to left field at 11 mph for Monday's showdown between Philadelphia and the visiting Mets. Philadelphia went 6-1 SU and 2-4-1 O/U in seven games under similar conditions a season ago.

                      * Citi Field will see wind blowing out to left field at 11 mph for Tuesday's showdown between host New York and the Washington Nationals. Teams combined to average 2.04 home runs in 26 games with the wind blowing out to left in 2013 - above the stadium average of 1.84.

Under hot when this pitcher gets the start

The Under is 7-1 in the Baltimore Orioles' last eight games when Bud Norris gets the start. The starter had rattled off a streak of seven Unders before his Orioles knocked home nine runs in their 9-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in his last start.

Through 19 starts this season, Norris has posted an Over/Under record of 6-13 - one of the top Under marks among starting hurlers. He sports a 9-7 straight-up record, 3.68 ERA and 1.26 WHIP on the season.

Norris will toe the rubber at Oriole Park as the O's host the New York Yankees Monday evening. Oddsmakers have tabbed the game with a total of 8.5.

Faves have perfect week north of the border

Bettors who had taken the favorite across the board in Week 7 of the Canadian Football League schedule will be eager for Week 8 to begin as the fave posted a perfect record of 4-0 against the spread. The perfect week brings the season-to-date record for faves to 14-14 ATS.

Saskatchewan, Edmonton, B.C. and Calgary all covered as favorites as the West Division continues to dominate. All five teams in the division have a positive record ATS, while just one team in the East - the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-3 ATS) - can even claim to have a record of .500 up to this point.

There's an early start to the week in the CFL as the opening matchup of Week 8 goes Tuesday night as the Toronto Argonauts host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The game is currently off the board.
