    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Thanks to retrosheet.org, I found the boxscore from the first major league game I went to in person: Cardinals 10, Mets 8-- August 6, 1966

-- Mets were in their 5th year of existence, on their way to a 66-95 season; I was six years old. Cardinals were 83-79 that year, won World Series the next year. The first thing I thought of was how big and bright the field was when I first saw it.

-- Cardinals led 5-0 in 3rd inning, but Mets scored five in third, three in fourth to take an 8-5 lead, but their bullpen disintegrated, allowing runs in last four innings.

-- Tim McCarver batted second for St Louis; Tito Francona (Terry's father) hit third. Francona-Orlando Cepeda-Dal Maxvill all wound up playing for the A's before they retired, Cepeda/Francona as DHs in the early 70's.

-- Light-hitting Maxvill got the hit in 1972 that clinched the AL West for the A's.

-- Julian Javier played 2B for St Louis; his son Stan was on the '89 A's team that won the World Series over the Giants.

-- Mike Shannon hit a homer for St Louis that day; 33 years later, I was in his bar in St Louis after the Rams won the NFC championship. He was there, clearing bottles off some of the tables, chatting up the customers. Pretty cool.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.......

    13) One of many reasons baseball is tremendous are extra inning games that take on a life of their own; it is 3:22am as I type this- Red Sox-Angels are in the 18th inning, in a game where Boston didn't get a hit until the 7th inning. Rookie catcher Vazquez has caught the whole game for the Red Sox, 257 pitches worth.

Now, on with the already-written notes for today...........
    12) Washington-Atlanta game went extra innings after starting just before 11pm because of rain; they play the Sunday night game, so there won't be the hangover there has to be for the Red Sox-Angels Sunday afternoon (this game is still going on and tomorrow's game starts in 12.5 hours).

    11) Nationals are 1-7 in Stephen Strasburg's last eight road starts.

    10) Mets have 23 walk-off losses the last two years, most in MLB (Sox-Angels just went to the 19th inning).

    9) Surprising stat; David Wright has the worst OPS of any #3 hitter in the major leagues this season. OPS is slugging percentage plus on-base percentage.

    8) Baltimore Orioles are 15-7 since All-Star break, lead AL East by six games. Caleb Joseph has homered in five straight games; all-time record is seven. Before the last five games, Joseph had three HRs in 156 PAs- big year for the Orioles.

    7) Albert Pujols just hit a walk-off homer to the opposite field in the 19th inning off of Brandon Workman; both teams wound up using starting pitchers. He hit it at roughly 3:38am, so it was after midnight, even in Anaheim.

    6) Ricky Fowler (-29) has the best aggregate score in the four majors this year; Rory McIlroy (-24) is second, as expected.

    5) Speaking of golf, CBS announcer Peter Kostis apparently has two sons; kids' godfather is Franz Klammer, world champion skiier. Talk about worlds colliding.

    4) Cleveland Indians are 24-37 on road, 7-6 when Cory Kluber pitches. Kluber has a 0.68 ERA since All-Star break-- he is very good.

    3) Eric Sogard walked four times for the A's tonight, first time ever a 9th-place hitter for the A's walked four times in one game. Minnesota's pitching coach has to be sick; as much as I root for Sogard (I've worn glasses since I was 4), he is hitting .214-- you can't walk a .214 hitter four times in a week, much less one game.

    2) Padres-Pirates split pair of 2-1 games the last two nights; all six runs scored in the first inning. Go figure.

    1) Jets have a tight end named Jace Amaro who caught 106 passes for Texas Tech LY; NFL offenses are different than what Kliff Kingsbury runs, but catching 106 balls as a tight end? If he can block at all, he'll have a job next month.

Ambrose gets fifth Nationwide road win

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- Recovering from an early spin after contact with Kyle Busch’s Toyota, Marcos Ambrose held off Busch in the closing laps of Saturday’s Zippo 200 at the Glen to win the series-best fifth road course race of his Nationwide Series career.

The Australian driver has won four consecutive NNS starts at 2.45-mile Watkins Glen International, having triumphed in three straight from 2008 through 2010 and this year after a three-race hiatus from competition at the Glen.

Though Ambrose knows full well the big prizes -- NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory in the Cheez-It 355 at the Glen (1 p.m. ET on ESPN) and a berth in the Chase -- will be contested on Sunday, he was eager to savor the NNS win.

“I just want to enjoy today,” Ambrose said. “You get to victory lane, and it’s special. I would love to repeat, but it’s a lot of work tomorrow. I want to think about this and get a good night’s rest and come attack them tomorrow.”

During an exchange of pit stops with 32 of 82 laps left, Ambrose surged past Joey Logano as the driver of the No. 12 Team Penske Ford exited pit road.

When the sequence of stops cycled through, Ambrose, who had pitted one lap earlier than Logano, held the lead, with Logano running second.

Ambrose kept the top spot after a restart on Lap 63 that followed the fifth and final caution of the race.

With five laps left, Busch roared past Logano but couldn’t get to the bumper of Ambrose’s No. 9 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford in time to make a move for the win.

Logano came home third, followed by pole winner Brad Keselowski and Matt Kenseth. Rookie Chase Elliott ran sixth and extended his series lead to 12 points over JR Motorsports teammate Regan Smith, who finished 17th.

The way Logano saw it, losing the spot to Ambrose during the cycle of green-flag stops was crucial.

“That was definitely a key moment,” Logano said. “If I was able to get in front of him there ... all I needed was three-tenths of a second probably, and that would have been enough position into that corner to beat him through the esses and get position. I felt like, if I got clean air and ran hard, that I could have gapped him.

“I think at the end of the race, he would have caught me and the 54 (Busch) also. It would have been close. I’m not going to say we would have won the race. It would have been close. Our car was good on the short run. Marcos was steady all the way through and the 54, late in the run, was really fast. If I didn’t run so hard and had clean air and didn’t burn the tires off, would I have lasted longer? Yeah.

“Would it have been enough to beat him? We’ll never know. But I feel it would have been closer for us, for sure.”

      Ambrose agreed.

“I think if I hadn’t cleared him right there, he would have been gone,” Ambrose said. “Maybe I could have stalked him a little bit and got him in traffic, but we had a fast enough car to lead like that, but it would have been really tough to pass.”

Before the battle with Logano was even a consideration, Ambrose had to recover from a Lap 6 spin in the bus stop chicane after he and Busch collided near the entrance.

“He ducked out late, and then the spotter was late,” Ambrose said. “I was already committed to that line, and he thumped my left rear there. It wasn’t intentional. I’ve got no malice against him whatsoever ... he spun out, too.”

Busch wasn’t quite as charitable in his assessment of the mishap.

“We didn’t qualify as well as we needed to and tried to make a move on somebody who didn’t give a crap, and then he just turned into me and spun us out, so that put us behind,” Busch said. “We came back and got second.”

In a quirky sort of way, the accident might have helped both drivers.

Ambrose and Busch brought their cars to pit road for fuel and fresh tires under caution on Lap 13. Knifing his way through traffic, Ambrose worked his way back to fifth before pitting again under green on Lap 20, covering stops made by Keselowski (Lap 18) and Logano (Lap 19).

“If you’d told me that’s how we were going to do the race, I would have said that’s a bad strategy,” Ambrose quipped. “But it worked out for us—first and second. For two guys doing pirouettes in the bus stop, that’s pretty cool.

“And it just shows you how these races are never over. You can’t quit. Just because you’re in the grass backwards doesn’t mean your race is done.”

Driver struck by Tony Stewart's car dies

NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart struck a driver who later died after a dirt-track racing incident Saturday night at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park.

According to reports and video of the crash, Stewart's car allegedly struck driver Kevin Ward Jr., who had exited his sprint car after a collision and stepped toward Stewart's car. The mishap occurred at about 10 p.m. ET at the half-mile dirt track north of Syracuse.

The Ontario County Sheriff's Department did not identify the driver, who was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital. Stewart cooperated with authorities and was released. Officers were conducting an investigation at the track early Sunday morning.

Tyler Graves, a fellow racer and friend of Ward, told The Sporting News that he watching the action from the grandstands.

"Tony pinched him into the frontstretch wall, a racing thing," said Graves, 16, of Bolivar, N.Y. "The right rear tire went down, he spun on the exit of (Turn) 2. They threw the caution and everything was toned down. Kevin got out of his car. ... He was throwing his arms up all over the place at Tony for most of the corner.

"I know Tony could see him. I know how you can see out of these cars. When Tony got close to him, he hit the throttle. When you hit a throttle on a sprint car, the car sets sideways. It set sideways, the right rear tire hit Kevin, Kevin was sucked underneath and was stuck under it for a second or two and then it threw him about 50 yards."

Graves said Ward was not moving after he hit the ground.

Another witness, Adam Dulski, told USA Today, "It happened in Turn 2. The prior lap, Tony had gotten into him -- just spun him, nothing big, just spun him around. The caution came out. He hopped out of the car -- the driver of the 13. He hopped out to go and yell and point a finger at Tony, typical thing.

"Tony came around, the back end slid out and he definitely caught him -- I couldn't tell if it was with the front or the back of the car. The body made contact with the car and went sliding across the track. It was the worst thing I've ever seen."

Barbara Manning, a nursing supervisor at Thompson Health in Canandaigua, said earlier that a man was at the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

"You never mean to do something like that," Graves told TSN. "Kevin was pissed and he let Tony know. And Tony was trying to give the message back that he wasn't happy either. He went over the line with it."

After the accident, the track cancelled the rest of the program.

"Tonight's racing events were suspended due to an accident," the track announced on Facebook. "Please hold off on any speculation until we have further information to share."

It then added, "Canandaigua Motorspots Park will not have an official statement on the accident that happened in the ESS race until tomorrow. Please pray for the entire racing community of fans, drivers, and families. Please be respectful in any comments."

Last July, Stewart was involved in another wreck at the same track that resulted in two drivers suffering injuries.

Stewart is scheduled to drive in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race on Sunday on the road course at Watkins Glen, N.Y.

NFC North NFL betting preview: Lions dangerous in deep division

The Packers, Bears and Lions all have legit shots at the NFC North crown, which should make for some interesting games between those heated rivals. The Vikings, on the other hand, look to Adrian Peterson’s aging legs and a new coaching staff to keep them competitive – and out of the basement - in the division.

Green Bay Packers (2013: 8-7-1 SU, 7-9 ATS)

          Odds to win division: -145
          Season win total: 10.5

Why bet the Packers: After winning at least 10 games for four straight seasons, the Packers won just eight games last season but it wasn't because of a team regression. Aaron Rodgers went down in Week 9, Green Bay suffered through a five-game losing streak, and while Rodgers came back to win the season finale to take the division, it was an early playoff exit. The Packers will be a motivated bunch this season.

Why not bet the Packers: Defense. The Packers allowed 26.8 points per game last season, the most given up in over a decade and a repeat of that will cause issues. The return of Clay Matthews and the addition of Julius Peppers will certainly help, but will it be enough? A running game behind Rodgers is essential as well but that’s no guarantee either.

Season win total pick: Under 10.5

          Chicago Bears (2013: 8-8 SU, 4-11-1 ATS)

          Odds to win division: +310
          Season win total: 8.5

Why to bet the Bears: This is the second year in the system under head coach Marc Trestman and after improving last season, things could be even more explosive in 2014. Jay Cutler had his best passer rating since his rookie season in 2006 and got a new contract to prove his worth. The defense can only get better with the additions of Jared Allen and D.J Williams.

Why not to bet the Bears: Similar to Green Bay, it comes down to the defense which allowed almost two touchdowns per game more than the previous season. But even an improved stop unit may not be enough. Keeping Cutler healthy is huge as there is no proven backup. Should he go down again, the Bears will be outside of the playoffs for the seventh time in eight years.

Season win total pick: Under 8.5

          Detroit Lions (2013: 7-9 SU, 6-10 ATS)

          Odds to win division: +360
          Season win total: 8.5

Why to bet the Lions: After making the playoffs just once in five years under Jim Schwartz, a change was made and Jim Caldwell was brought in. The offense will again be explosive behind Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Reggie Bush and the return of the entire offensive line. The defense could be the best in years and a tame schedule could make Detroit a sleeper in the NFC North.

Why not to bet the Lions: Expectations have been high for the last few years and the Lions have failed to meet them, so why should this year be any different? Bringing in a new head coach can't hurt but Caldwell was not the popular choice. He was the offensive coordinator in Baltimore last season and the Ravens were 29th in the league in total offense.

Season win total pick: Over 8.5

          Minnesota Vikings (2013: 5-10-1 SU, 9-7 ATS)

          Odds to win division: +1300
          Season win total: 6

Why to bet the Vikings: New head coach Mike Zimmer comes into town with a roster full of talent and Minnesota was better than last season's record shows. Four of the Vikings’ losses were by four points or less and now with low expectations, they could turn the tables on some of those winnable games. The schedule is in their favor as they play only three teams that had a winning record last season.

Why not to bet the Vikings: While the schedule is tame, it is frontloaded. Facing New England, New Orleans, Atlanta and Green Bay in Weeks 2 through 5 could set the table for another bad start, which could ultimately deflate the team early. The defense was the worst in the NFL last season and playing in the offensively-potent NFC North is not going to help matters.

Season win total pick: Over 6

Game of the Day: Nationals vs. Braves
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves (-113, 7)

The Washington Nationals sit in first place in the National League East, but would feel a lot better about their postseason chances if Gio Gonzalez can return to being one of the game’s top left-handers. Gonzalez starts Sunday night’s series finale at Atlanta seeking his first victory in more than a month, and looking to help Washington build momentum after the Nationals won 4-1 in 11 innings Saturday. Washington's victory dropped the Braves 4½ games back in the NL East.

Since scoring seven runs in the first five innings of the series opener Friday, Atlanta has plated just one in its past 15 innings. Freddie Freeman collected three hits in Saturday’s loss – which ended at 2:29 a.m. ET on Sunday following a 3-hour, 41-minute rain delay – and is batting .500 against Washington this season. The Nationals scratched top outfield prospect Michael Taylor from Saturday’s game with Triple-A Syracuse, and Taylor is expected to join the big-league club as Jayson Werth is hobbled by shoulder and ankle injuries.

                      LINE HISTORY:
Pinnacle Sports opened the Braves as -108 home faves, which has since moved to -113. The total opened at 7.

                      INJURY REPORT:
Nationals: 3B Ryan Zimmerman (Mid September, hamstring), LF Nate McLouth (15-day DL, shoulder). Braves: SS Andrelton Simmons (Doubtful, ankle)

                      POWER RANKINGS:
                      Nationals (-173), Braves (-160)

                      PITCHING MATCHUP:
Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (6-8, 4.01 ERA) vs. Braves LH Alex Wood (7-9, 3.20)

Gonzalez was 6-4 with a 3.52 ERA after beating the Cubs on July 5, but is 0-4 in his past five outings with a 5.40 ERA and a .269 opponents batting average. He has lost his past three starts, giving up four runs on six hits in six innings Tuesday to lose to the Mets. Gonzalez, who has averaged 15.8 victories since 2010, lost his only start to Atlanta on April 13 with six runs allowed on nine hits.

Wood makes his 16th start of the season and ninth since rejoining the rotation June 25, and has gone 4-8 with a 2.96 ERA as a starter. He gave up one earned run (four runs total) in six innings to lose Tuesday at Seattle, and has given up one earned run in three of his past four outings. Wood split two decisions against the Nationals in April, posting a 2.25 ERA.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Home team is 7-0 in umpire Phil Cuzzi's last seven games behind home plate.
                      * Nationals are 0-7 in Gonzalez's last seven starts vs. Braves.

                      * Under is 6-1-1 in Wood's last eight starts vs. a team with a winning record.

                      CONSENSUS:
54.26 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the Braves.

                        Phils trending Over behind Kendrick

If you've been backing the Over in Kyle Kendrick's starts for the Philadelphia Phillies lately, you have some extra cash in your pocket. Six of Kendrick's last seven starts have gone over the total.

He'll get the nod when the Phils host the New York Mets Sunday. BetOnline.com currently lists the Mets as -120 faves on the moneyline with an O/U of eight.

Trends show Reds feasting on lefties

The Cincinnati Reds have been dominating left-handed pitching as of late, posting an 8-1 record in their last nine games versus southpaws through Saturday. That's good news for Reds backers as lefty Brad Hand will be on the hill for the Miami Marlins when they face off in Ohio Sunday.

Cincy are -166 faves on the moneyline with a total of seven.

This team is lights out on the Under away from home

The Detroit Tigers have been a boon for Under bettors away from Comerica Park lately, evidenced by eight of their last nine games on the road going under the total through Saturday. They'll pay a visit to the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre Sunday.

The Tigers are -135 faves on the moneyline with an O/U of eight.

This pitcher has been a nightmare for bettors

It's been a tough stretch for Cleveland Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco, and if you've been backing the Tribe when he's on the bump, it's been hard on your wallet as well. In the 27-year-old's last 17 starts, the Indians are an ugly 3-14.

He'll get the ball when Cleveland faces off against the New York Yankees in the Bronx Sunday. The Yanks are currently -143 faves with an O/U of 8.5.
