    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Home plate ump Mike Winters took a pitch directly to his right forearm in the 2nd inning in Philly; it swelled badly within a minute, but he got it wrapped and worked the rest of game behind the plate. Tough dude.

-- Congrats to Bartolo Colon on winning his 200th career game last night.

-- Lions fired HC Jim Schwartz LY; he is now DC in Buffalo. Bills-Lions play in Detroit October 5, as well as in last preseason game in three weeks.

-- Justin Masterson's first two starts with St Louis: eight IP, ten runs allowed.

-- Bengals' coach Marvin Lewis is 90-90-1, but is taking grief because he hasn't won a playoff game; Cincy's three coaches before Lewis were 52-124.

-- Cubs' prospect Javier Baez is second player in 100 years with three HRs in his first three big league games; other was Cardinals' Joe Cunningham in 1954, who wound up hitting .293 with a .403 career OB% in a 12-year career, but wound up with only 64 career homers; somewhere upstairs I have his baseball card from the end of his career.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Its strange the things you remember....

    13) I had braces when I was a teenager; just remember how surly my orthodontist was, how he’d snap at his hygienist. She seemed so unhappy being there—the guy was a creep. But he was an Irish creep and my mother knew his mother from church- she liked all things/people Irish, so I got stuck going to this guy who used to tell me “That doesn’t hurt” when he would tighten my braces. It hurt like hell, even if I was a soft suburban kid.

    12) I remember that racetracks never had telephones; when we went to Saratoga in August, you couldn’t get ball scores or talk to anyone on the outside while we were there. What percentage of people there today have cellphones with them? 85%? 90%? More than that?

    11) I remember my 9th grade math teacher was Mr Terzian; good teacher, really smart guy, little spacy. Looked a lot like Pete Carril, the old Princeton basketball coach. One day he comes into class and asks if anyone found a golf club on the football field. Turns out he was whacking around golf balls and left his driver on the 50-yard line. No bueno. Driving range would’ve been cheaper than losing his driver.

    10) In 1974-75, Bronx Bombers played home games at Shea Stadium, because their ballpark was being remodeled. I was 15; I went on a bus trip with some friends for a Bat Day game with the Royals. All kids 16 and under got a bat for free; well, all kids but me. Jerk at the turnstile didn’t believe I was 15 because I was very tall for my age; because I was 15, I didn’t have anything to prove my age, so I never got a bat. Like money for the bat was coming out of the jerk's pocket. Rat bastard.

    9) I remember Larry Brown coaching in the ABA while wearing overalls; even found a picture of it on the Internet last month. He is the reason NBA coaches have a dress code. 38 years later and Brown is still coaching at SMU, albeit in college and in a suit jacket, not overalls.

    8) Because of this website, I once watched a Chiefs-Giants preseason game in the press box at Giants Stadium; was weird sitting there by myself watching, but they have free food in the press room before/after the game and at halftime. I’m in the food line, and former Chiefs’ QB Len Dawson is right behind me.

Two things; a) He’s a lot bigger than I thought he was.......
    b) Why the hell am I in front of Len Dawson in the food line?

He played in two of the first four Super Bowls; he should eat before me.

    7) 30 years ago I was an official scorer for a minor league team in the Eastern League. Guy who typed in messages on the scoreboard sat next to me all summer; nice enough guy. After the season, I find out the guy turned himself into the FBI because the mob had put a hit out on him, for unknown (to me) reasons.

Geez, what if they took a shot at him and hit me instead? Being an official scorer wasn’t much fun to begin with (stats are serious business) but this was ridiculous.

    6) I was lucky enough to be an assistant basketball coach at Schenectady High for eight years; the school Pat Riley went to. Early in my third year there, our head coach was talking to the kids about “…when you play for a state championship”.

This for a team that had won a combined nine games the previous two seasons. I’m thinking if we could win one sectional game it would be a great accomplishment. Turns out the coach was truly a great coach and three years later, we won a state championship, then three years after that, won another one.

One of the great experiences of my life, but I’ll always remember how he saw the future clearly when it seemed impossible for something like that to happen.

    5) When I was in 8th grade, I missed a foul shot with game tied and 0:01 left; we lost in double OT and even though it was the best game I played that year, I was the goat, no doubt. Our team finished 1-13, not a lot of fun.

Years later, I wound up shooting free throws for beer after third quarter of a CBA game in Albany. Can’t remember if Phil Jackson or George Karl was coaching the Albany Patroons back then, but one of them saw me make four foul shots (out of 7) in 0:24, netting me four cases of beer, which I unsuccessfully tried to trade for soda.

Would’ve traded all four cases of beer for that foul shot in 8th grade to have gone in.

    4) I remember that before ESPN, before the shot clock, before Coach K, Duke once led North Carolina 7-0 at halftime. Of a basketball game. Kids today have no idea how tedious basketball could be without a shot clock.

    3) I remember the first time I saw Steve Martin on TV; still the funniest guy I’ve ever seen. He was on the Tonight Show when the Tonight Show was a huge deal, it was the early 70’s and Buddy Hackett was the guest host.

White suit and all, he did his classic comedy routine and I was hooked for life. What a brilliant guy and a good actor, too.

    2) My cousin took me to a comedy club in Manhattan in 1978, the same night Pete Rose’s 44-game hitting streak ended, that I remember. Pat Benatar sang that night; she was an up-and-comer back then. The MC was Richard Belzer, who now plays Detective Munch on the SVU show on TV; I was terrified he was going to pick on me in the audience, unaware that the people he was jousting with in the crowd were plants, his friends. Catch a Rising Star was the place; I was 18, it was great fun.

    1) Some days are better than others; on a Monday ten years ago, friend of mine set it up so I would meet Kurt Warner at Giants’ training camp, which was a great moment. There is a picture of the two of us in my living room; he looks happier than me in the pic but no way he was.

Anyway, while I was waiting to meet Kurt, I was talking to this writer who was in from New Orleans to do a feature on Eli Manning, who was a rookie that year- they both went to Newman HS in New Orleans.

Writer was Michael Lewis; you may have heard of him—he wrote Moneyball. So a guy who roots like hell for the Rams/A’s met Kurt Warner and the guy who wrote Moneyball in the same hour. On a Monday afternoon in Albany.

    Sometimes, you just never know.

Ambrose faces key weekend at Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- When the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series comes to the road course at Watkins Glen International, Marcos Ambrose expects to be the center of attention.

"Certainly, I get talked about more, and people want to know what I'm doing," Ambrose said Friday at the Glen, understating the case. "That’s a good thing. I don't have any problem with that."

Winner of Sprint Cup races at WGI in 2012 and 2013, Ambrose is expected to excel at the 2.45-mile road course. That doesn’t mean, however, that he expects to have an easy time in Sunday's Cheez-It 355 at the Glen (1 p.m. ET, ESPN).

And though he'll be under closer scrutiny than he is at oval tracks, Ambrose will try to keep his own focus as narrow as possible and concentrate on the task at hand.

"You just have to do the best you can," he said. "I can't change anything but how I drive the race car. That's what I'll focus on. ... You know it won't be easy. There are going to be 10 to 12 guys out there that have a shot to win the race. You just know going in that it won't be a cakewalk. It's going to have to be a big grind to get the victory."

Though Watkins Glen may give Ambrose his best chance at a victory and an accompanying berth in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, the Australian driver will try to keep that thought away from the forefront of his consciousness.

"It's an important weekend, no doubt," said Ambrose, who was fifth fastest in opening practice and second to AJ Allmendinger in the final session. "You have to try to downplay that as best as you can coming in. ... You can only do what you can out there behind the wheel and let the racing gods work out whether it's your day or not."

      ROAD MAP FOR CHASE ELLIOTT

During a Wednesday interview on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, team owner Rick Hendrick said he expects driver Chase Elliott to make his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut next year.

That's fine with Dale Earnhardt Jr., who owns the No. 9 Chevrolet driven by Elliott in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

"I think it makes great sense," Earnhardt said Friday before opening Cup practice at Watkins Glen. "Two Nationwide seasons, run a little Cup in that second season and go right into Cup.

"I think that's the plan. He's running well enough that that seems to make a lot of sense. I wouldn't have expected anything else, to be honest with you."

In his rookie season with JR Motorsports, Elliott leads the Nationwide standings by two points over teammate Regan Smith. Plans for Elliott's future include a second season in NNS next year before a jump to a full-time Cup ride in 2016.

And though NASCAR restricts an owner to a maximum of four drivers per Cup organization, the sanctioning body does make an allowance for occasional appearances by a rookie driver in what would be a fifth car.

Accordingly, Hendrick could field a car for Elliott on a limited basis next year.

      BAD DAY FOR DANICA

Stewart-Haas driver Danica Patrick will start from the rear of the field in Sunday's race after blowing an engine during Friday's first practice session. By rule, an engine change requires a driver to drop to the back for the start of the race, regardless of qualifying position.

Patrick completed seven laps in opening practice before the failure. She finished the session 32nd fastest at 124.292 mph.

But the blown engine was the least of Patrick's worries. With five minutes left in final practice, she buried the nose of her No. 10 Chevrolet in a tire barrier near the exit from the bus stop chicane, the result of a shock failure that compressed the left-front of the car and popped the tire.

With severe damage to the primary Chevy, Patrick's team rolled out a backup car and began mounting her third engine of the day in the backup.

"The only positive thing is that I'm hoping I'm using up all my bad luck and mistakes and all the bad stuff in one day, so that I can get it out of the system before we got to the next one," Patrick said. "On second thought, I suppose that after an engine change this morning we were starting in the back anyway.

"Third, I would say, if you're going to have to start at the back of a track, the strategies are all over the place on road courses, and it just might push us into something that works."

First practice also was unkind to SHR owner/driver Tony Stewart, who had to change transmissions after issues in the opening practice. According to road-course rules, however, Stewart will retain the starting position he earns in Saturday's time trials.

NASCAR, IMG PARTNER TO EXTEND GLOBAL FOOTPRINT

Earlier this week, NASCAR announced a 10-year international broadcast partnership with IMG to assist the sanctioning body with expanding its footprint, audience base and revenues outside of North and South America.

IMG will focus its efforts to key international territories such as Western Europe and Australia, as well as regions where motorsports are less known, including Southeast Asia, China and Eastern Europe.

Currently, NASCAR races are broadcast in more than 175 countries through more than 20 broadcast partners worldwide. IMG will assist NASCAR with creating and executing a new international media strategy for 2015 and beyond. The new international broadcasting rights will coincide with the domestic broadcasting rights partnerships with FOX and NBC announced last summer.

Game of the Day: Redblacks at Stampeders
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ottawa Redblacks at Calgary Stampeders (-13.5, 48)

The Ottawa Redblacks and Calgary Stampeders may be off to different starts to their respective CFL seasons, but they're both within reach of the division lead. The Redblacks look to halt a two-game losing skid Saturday as they head to Calgary for a date with the formidable Stampeders. Ottawa has dropped all three of its road games during its inaugural season, and will be in tough against a Stampeders team that has allowed a league-low 77 points.

The margin for error in the West Division is paper-thin - and the Stampeders found out the hard way last week, dropping a 25-24 decision to the BC Lions and subsequently dropping out of top spot in the division. Bo Levi Mitchell was denied in his quest to become the first quarterback in league history to win his first eight starts, but is primed for a bounce-back against a Redblacks defensive unit that is surrendering an average of 30 points per contest.

        TV:
        7:30 p.m. ET, TSN

        LINE HISTORY:
The opening line favored the Stampeders by 13, but has since shifted to -13.5.The total opened at a relatively low 46 with bettors quickly betting it all the way up to 48.

        INJURY REPORT:
Redblacks - N/A Stampeders - RB Matt Walter (Questionable, Concussion), DB Buddy Jackson (Questionable, Undisclosed)

        ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (1-4):
Quarterback Henry Burris is no stranger to slow starts - he was part of the 2013 Hamilton Tiger-Cats roster that stumbled to a 1-4 start before rebounding to represent the East in the Grey Cup. He believes the Redblacks can rebound from last week's 38-14 thumping at the hands of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. "I'm very confident that we're going to bounce back and do some much better things," he told reporters. "Right now we have the players that can make the plays ... we just have to make those things happen."

        ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (4-1):
Mitchell looked strangely ordinary in the narrow loss to the Lions, completing 21-of-31 passes for 227 yards with a touchdown and an interception as Calgary fell short of its first 5-0 start since 1995. But Mitchell didn't get much help in the second half as the Stampeders managed just a Rene Paredes field goal after cruising to a 21-10 advantage through 30 minutes. Close contests have been the norm for Calgary of late, with each of its previous three games decided by four or fewer points.

        TRENDS:

*RedBlacks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
*Stampeders are 22-6 ATS in their last 28 games following a ATS loss.
*Under is 8-1 in Stampeders last 9 games overall.

        CONSENSUS:
57 percent of users are taking the Stampeders -13.5 with totals bettors 57 percent in favor of the over.

                  Pitcher completely dominantes next opponent

The Detroit Tigers are going to send Max Scherzer to the mound, much to the chagrin of the Toronto Blue Jays. Scherzer has dominated the Blue Jays and bettors have profited with four straight unders.

Scherzer has held the Blue Jays to less than two runs in all of his previous four starts while striking out at least eight in three of those games.

Buchholz facing a tough task against this team

Clay Buchholz has not shown his top stuff against the Los Angeles Angels. Bettors have enjoyed this, as the Boston Red Sox and the Angels have gone over in Buchholz last four starts.

Buchholz has allowed 17 runs, average of 4.25 runs per game, in those four starts. The Sox and Angels have averaged 11 runs in those four starts.

Pitcher playing well, but team not helping

The San Diego Padres send Eric Stults to the mound Saturday and he must be hoping for some support. The Padres have gone 2-9 in Stults' last 11 starts for the Padres.

Stults has only given up three runs per game, but seven times the Padres offense has scored less than two runs.

Roark incredibly strong on the road

Tanner Roark certainly enjoys visiting different mounds in the MLB. The Washington Nationals and Roark are 5-1 in his last six starts on the road.

Roark has allowed nine runs in six games and has six K's in four of the games.

Saturday's NFL Week 1 preseason betting primer

The opening week of the NFL preseason winds down Saturday. Here's a look at betting notes for the four remaining games:

Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions (-1, 39.5)

                        * Browns head coach Mike Pettine isn't telling anyone about how he'll divide up the playing time - not even the players - but it's expected that Brian Hoyer and the first-team offense will see two or three series. Much of the offensive focus will be on rookie running back Terrance West, who is expected to see plenty of playing time as he looks to solidify the backup role behind Ben Tate.

                        * The Lions sport a new-look offense, and will have it on display against Cleveland - though it may not include wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who is questionable for the exhibition opener. Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi wouldn't say how much time quarterback Matthew Stafford would see, suggesting that would be dictated by the flow of the game.

Pittsburgh Steelers at New York Giants (-2.5, 37)

                        * The Steelers had a dreadful preseason a year ago, dropping all four games - including an 18-13 decision to the Giants in their opener nearly a year to the day before their next exhibition matchup. As it was a year ago, the early focus will be on quarterbacks Bruce Gradkowski and Landry Jones, who will both get a chance Saturday to make their case for serving as Ben Roethlisberger's backup.

                        * Even though the Giants are playing their second game of the exhibition season, head coach Tom Coughlin doesn't see the first-team offense playing much more than it did in the opener against the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Tom Coughlin said he's still in the process of evaluating the rest of the roster, which means that quarterback Eli Manning and Co. may only see slightly more than the 15 snaps it had against Buffalo.

Green Bay Packers at Tennessee Titans (-2, 38)

                        * Packers head coach Mike McCarthy expects to give work to all four of his quarterbacks currently in camp against the Titans, so don't expect Aaron Rodgers to see more than one or two series of action. Seven players still in camp didn't make the trip to Tennessee due to injury, including safety Morgan Burnett (oblique strain) and tight end Colt Lyerla (knee sprain).

                        * Head coach Ken Whisenhunt has said both the offensive and defensive starters should expect to play 12-15 snaps against the Packers. With the Titans having emerged from training camp relatively healthy, there should be several areas of focus Saturday - including battles for starting cornerback spots and the duel between Charlie Whitehurst and rookie Zach Mettenberger for the No. 2 quarterback job.

Houston Texans at Arizona Cardinals (-2, 37.5)

                        * With No. 1 quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick expected to be limited in the opener, Case Keenum and rookie Tom Savage will see the majority of reps over the final 3 1/2 quarters - and for Keenum, the opportunity is there to perhaps seize the starting role. With wide receiver Andre Johnson sitting out with a hamstring injury, the focus will be on third-year receiver DeVier Posey, who will start in his place.

                        * Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians believes the starters on both sides of the ball will see about 15 snaps, though it's unlikely to be any more than that with nearly the entire Arizona roster healthy and available to play. Arizona had a successful exhibition campaign a year ago, rolling to a 3-1 record after going just 1-4 a season earlier.

Phils ice cold against the Mets

The Philadelphia Phillies have been getting dominated by the New York Mets in recent matchups, dropping six out of their last seven meetings against New York. Philadelphia is currently -170 faves on the moneyline with an O/U of seven.

Marlins call up Brad Penny to start tonight vs. Reds

We heard earlier this week that the Marlins were thinking about calling up 36-year-old Brad Penny to fill the rotation spot of 23-year-old Jacob Turner, who was recently designated for assignment and swapped to the Cubs. The speculation is now confirmed, as the team has announced that Penny will start tonight against the Reds.
