    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Detroit 4, Bronx 3 (12)-- 322 pitches, 91 batters, no walks. First time in 100+ years Bronx played an extra inning game witb no walks for either side.

-- Andrew McCutchen has a broken rib with cartilage damage, very bad news for the Pirates, who lost 6-3 at home to Miami last night.

-- Charleston fired basketball coach Doug Wojcik who won more than he lost in two years, but was accused of verbal abuse by many team/staff members. Wojcik was David Robinson's point guard at the Naval Academy.

-- Rangers 16, White Sox 0-- Slugger Adam Dunn pitched 9th inning for Chicago; he didn't do any worse than any of Pale Hose's regular pitchers, allowing a run.

-- Since 2008, Tampa Bay has used only 22 starting pitchers, fewest in the major leagues; San Diego (49) has used the most.

-- Dodgers 5, Angels 4-- Juan Uribe hit a 3-run homer, then later scored winning run on a close play at the plate when he knocked the ball out of the catcher's glove, as Dodgers won for 12th straight time when Kershaw started.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) August is a great month to watch NFL Network; they’ll have replays of every exhibition game, with one team’s announcers for each half.

Except for Dave Pasch/Ron Wolfley with Cardinal games, announcers are mostly mute button material- they shill for season tickets sales a lot and generally provide no information, but the games are fun to watch.

Curious to see OLs with Dolphins/Giants and also obviously Johnny Manziel, will be interesting to track, just because we get to see him play ball instead of cavorting all over America.

    12) There are seven new head coaches this year, though five of them have been HCs in college/pros before—only Mike Zimmer/Mike Pettine have not, but there are also 11 new offensive coordinators. Deciphering who will be aggressive/conservative is an interesting task if you’re involved in handicapping or fantasy football.

    11) You don’t think baseball is a mental game? Oakland’s Steven Vogt was 10 for his last 32 before the Price-Cespedes trade, which cleared a few more AB’s so Vogt could be a regular bat in the lineup, but he is 0-14 since the trade. No bueno.

    10) Bronx Bombers’ last 16 games were all decided by either one or two runs, longest such streak in major leagues since 1975.

    9) Battle 4 Atlantis on November 26 (day before Thanksgiving) has Oklahoma-UAB, Florida-Georgetown, Oklahoma-UCLA and North Carolina-Butler are first round matchups. At quick glance, UAB-Butler figures to be the 7th place game, but you never know about second round consolation games.

    8) Washington-Gonzaga are re-starting their basketball series, starting in two years; Zags have gotten so good, it helps the Huskies just to play them.

    7) David Price/Jon Lester took out full-page ads in local newspapers, thanking fans and their old clubs following last week’s trades. Classy move by both guys.

    6) Atlanta Falcons are on HBO’s Hard Knocks this summer; you see things in that show the casual fan doesn’t normally get to see, which makes it interesting. Not sure there is anything about the Falcons themselves that will make the show unique, but no one thought that about LY’s Dolphins either. Go figure.

    5) Cleveland Browns are 1-14 in season openers since they started up playing again in 1999, and 14 of those 15 games were at home. Browns beat Baltimore 20-3 in ’04 for their only 1-0 start in 15 years- they open in Pittsburgh this year. Steelers beat them 43-0/34-7 only two times they’ve met on Opening Day.

    4) Houston Texans go to Oakland in Week 2, an early Matt Schaub Bowl. Schaub had a brutal season as Houston’s QB last season; now he gets to play against his old team, as he tries to revive his career.

    3) New England was favored in its last ten road openers, going 7-3 SU, 6-4 against the spread. Pats are favored by 3.5 points at Miami in Week 1.

    2) Big rumor (pipe dream?) in Boston media this week is that Red Sox will try, at some point, to package Yoenis Cespedes in a deal to get Giancarlo Stanton from the Marlins, who were ther only team besides Oakland to bid for Cespedes when he first came here from Cuba.

    1) In light of Andrew McCutchen's rib injury, next time the Pirates play Arizona could be very interesting, seeing how the D'backs drilled McCutchen on purpose.

Best and worst NFL preseason bets of the past 19 years

You’ve heard all the warnings when it comes to betting on NFL preseason football. But like smoking, drinking and eating fast food, you still do it anyway.

If you’re going to wager on these whacky-ass exhibition games, in which no one but the head coaches have any clue as to what the hell will happen, at least you should know which NFL teams have consistently cashed in during the preseason and which ones wane in the warm-ups.

Here are the two best and two worst NFL teams to bet during the preseason since 1995:

      BEST PRESEASON BETS

Seattle Seahawks (45-27 SU, 43-26-3 ATS)

It doesn’t matter if it’s the preseason or the Super Bowl, the Seahawks are kicking ass and taking names. Seattle has been perfect the past two preseasons – going 8-0 SU and ATS – and is 11-1 ATS going back to the 2011 tune-up tilts.

Expectations have never been higher – which could mean so are the preseason spreads - but that didn’t stop the Seahawks from cashing in during the regular season. Winners win – something Seattle backers have done at a 62 percent clip in the preseason since 1995.

New York Jets (44-27 SU, 41-29-1 ATS)

Looking for value come the preseason? Gang Green is your one-stop shop for postseason profits. New York was 3-1 ATS last summer after an ugly 0-4 ATS performance in 2012 when the AFC East went a combined 1-15 ATS during the exhibition schedule.

This year, the Jets have Geno Smith and Mike Vick at the top of the QB depth chart – preseason betting’s equivalent to capping starting pitchers when betting baseball. The schedule features Indianapolis, the Giants, Cincinnati and Philadelphia – all teams with established starters. Look for Vick to challenge for the starting job, lighting a fire under the J-E-T-S in the preseason.

      WORST PRESEASON BETS

Kansas City Chiefs (24-48 SU, 21-48-3 ATS)

Andy Reid cares about the preseason about as much as he does for counting carbs and hot yoga. But while the public consensus is “fade Reid in the preseason”, his recent teams haven’t been that bad.

Kansas City was an indifferent 2-2 SU/ATS in its first exhibition slate under Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles finished 6-2 ATS in their final two preseason schedule with Reid on the sidelines. Overall, howver, the Chiefs have been a terrible play in August – covering just 30 percent of the time.

Oakland Raiders (33-38 SU, 29-40-2 ATS)

Misery loves company, and preseason bettors have suffered in the AFC West. Oakland joins Kansas City as the worst of the worst in exhibition play. The Silver and Black can’t seem to cover – no matter the time of year – and head coach Dennis Allen is feeling the crunch because of it. Oakland is a dismal 2-6 SU and 3-5 ATS during the preseason under Allen.

However, there may actually be hope, at least as far as the preseason is concerned. Allen needs to win now, not Week 1. So there’s that added motivation. And the Raiders also have a respectable QB corps, featuring Matt Schaub, Matt McGloin, and star draft pick Derek Carr, as well as a nice RB tandem in Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden – given they survive to see the preseason.

Line on the move in this Week 7 matchup

The opener of Week 7's schedule pits the Saskatchewan Roughriders at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and books posted this as a Pick when lines opened Monday.

With kickoff approaching, however, the line is on the move as the Bombers are now being offered as 1.5-point home dogs at offshore books. Vegas books had the game off the board, but Station Casinos opened the Bombers as 1-point dogs early Wednesday morning.

At 5-1 straight up and against the spread, the Bombers have been the best bet to start the season. The Riders head into the Week 7 matchup 3-2 SU and ATS.

Thunderstorms could hit this stadium Wednesday

According to DailyBaseballData.com, there is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms at PNC Park in Pittsburgh Wednesday, which could affect the field as the Pirates host the Miami Marlins.

There is upward of a 50 percent possibility of thunderstorms prior to game time, but that will decrease to 40 percent by the start of the game.

The Pirates are currently -129 faves with Jeff Locke on the mound. The Marlins are slated to counter with Tom Koehler.

David Ortiz, Boston - Doub Wed

Ortiz is not expected to play Wednesday against the Cardinals as he will likely be given the day to rest.

Lopsided history in this interleague matchup

Being an interleague matchup, the San Diego Padres and Minnesota Twins do not play each other too frequently. But if history is any indication, the Twins get wide-eyed when they see the Padres on the schedule.

Following Tuesday's 3-1 victory at Target Field, the Twins are now 9-0 in the previous nine meetings between the two ball clubs.

The Twins are currently -115 home faves and will send Kevin Correia to the mound, while Odrisamer Despaigne is scheduled to pitch for the visiting Padres.

Game of the Day: Tigers at Yankees
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees (+123, 9)

The New York Yankees own more than their share of major-league records, and they will set another when they host the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in the third contest of their four-game series. Scheduled to face Detroit's Justin Verlander, the Yankees will become the first team in history to take on the league's last three Cy Young Award winners in three consecutive games. New York, which trails Toronto by one game for the second wild-card spot in the American League, beat Max Scherzer in the series opener and had David Price on the ropes before blowing a two-run lead Tuesday.

Having assembled an armada in their starting rotation, the Tigers took a step to bolster their struggling bullpen by signing Jim Johnson to a minor-league contract. Johnson posted consecutive 50-save seasons with Baltimore before being traded in the offseason to Oakland, which released him after he posted a dreadful 7.38 ERA and 2.06 WHIP in 38 appearances. Recently acquired reliever Joakim Soria turned in his second straight scoreless effort Tuesday and closer Joe Nathan has picked up four saves while allowing two hits in his last six appearances for Detroit, which owns a 4 1/2-game lead over Kansas City in the AL Central.

                  Tigers (-196), Yankees (-151)

Tigers RH Justin Verlander (10-9, 4.66 ERA) vs. Yankees LH Chris Capuano (1-2, 4.50)

Verlander is coming off one of the best starts of his inconsistent season, allowing two runs on eight hits over eight innings in a victory over Colorado. It marked Verlander's longest outing since going eight innings on April 6 and also was only the second start in which he did not walk a batter. Verlander is 5-5 in 15 career starts versus New York but 0-2 with seven homers allowed in 31 innings at the new Yankee Stadium.

Capuano is making his third start since he was acquired in a trade with Colorado following his release from Boston in late June. He took the loss against the Red Sox on Friday, permitting four runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings after giving up two runs in six frames against Toronto in his New York debut. Miguel Cabrera is 9-for-23 with four homers and eight RBIs against Capuano while Torii Hunter is 9-for-21.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Over is 9-4 in umpire Tom Woodring's last 13 games behind home plate.

60.82 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the Detroit Tigers.

                      Wednesday, August 6

This pitcher has cashed in for bettors on the road

The San Francisco Giants are 7-1 in starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong's last eight road starts this season.

The one loss in those eight games came across the bay in Oakland as the A's triumphed 5-0 back on July 7.

Vogelsong takes the mound Wednesday evening as the Giants visit the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. Currently, the Giants are +125 road underdogs in the game.

MLB mid-week betting cheat sheet: Rays in tough against Gray
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major league games:

                        The Price Was (Mostly) Right

David Price looked strong in his Detroit debut, striking out 10 over 8 2/3 innings but settling for a no-decision in the Tigers' 4-3, 11-inning victory over the New York Yankees. Between the Rays and Tigers, Price is 8-2 SU and 2-8 O/U in his last 10 starts.

                        Gray Day For Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays will have their hands full Wednesday as they face Sonny Gray and the Oakland Athletics (-204, 7). Gray has a 0.61 ERA in two starts against Tampa Bay, and has surrendered just five earned runs over his previous six outings overall.

                        Lester's Encore

Left-hander Jon Lester will look for his second win in as many starts as an Athletic on Thursday as Oakland entertains the Minnesota Twins. Lester, acquired from Boston at the non-waiver trade deadline, is 8-1 SU and 3-6 O/U in his previous nine starts.

                        Pitching Notes

                        * Cleveland right-hander Danny Salazar has a pair of streaks on the line Wednesday as the Indians (-108, 7) visit the Cincinnati Reds. Salazar is 3-0 SU and 3-0 O/U in three starts since being called up from Triple-A Columbus in late July.

                        * Jake Peavy is off to a dismal start in his return to the National League as he leads the San Francisco Giants into Milwaukee on Thursday. Peavy has lost his first two starts since being acquired from Boston, and his teams have dropped 14 of his previous 15 outings overall.

                        Hitting Notes

                        * Atlanta Braves catcher Evan Gattis is mired in a 3-for-25 slump that has coincided with his team's season-worst seven-game losing skid. Gattis and the Braves (-120, 7) resume their interleague series in Seattle on Wednesday.

                        * Home runs may be hard to come by for the Baltimore Orioles in Thursday's tilt with JA Happ and the Toronto Blue Jays. No active member of the Orioles has gone deep against Happ, who has a 2.45 ERA in 25 2/3 career innings vs. Baltimore.

                        Totals Streak

Pittsburgh Pirates (5-1 O/U): The Pirates are in a bit of a tailspin, having dropped four of six while dealing with the potential long-term absence of defending NL MVP Andrew McCutchen. Pittsburgh is 51-53-8 O/U for the season.

                        Prop of the Day

The Cubs may be a strong play to win in Colorado by more than two runs; they're valued at +215 to do so. Cubs starter Jake Arrieta has recorded 10 straight quality starts while Rockies counterpart Jordan Lyles is making his return from a two-month DL stint due to a broken hand.

                        Injury Notes

                        * Colorado outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is expected to return Wednesday after missing the previous four games with an ankle injury. The Rockies went 2-2 SU, 2-2 O/U and earned four units in his absence as they prepare to tangle with the Cubs.

                        Weather Watch

                        * Winds at O.co Coliseum will blow out to right field at 6 mph Wednesday for the game between host Oakland and Tampa Bay. The Athletics went 21-8 SU and 12-17 O/U in 29 games last season with the wind blowing out to right at less than 10 mph.

                        Umpire Note of the Day

Under is 15-5-1 in umpire Brian O'Nora's last 21 games calling balls and strikes. O'Nora will be behind home plate Wednesday when the Blue Jays (+110, 8.5) host the Orioles.

Orioles producing results for backers on astroturf

The Baltimore Orioles are accustomed to playing on grass at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, but they've had no quips about playing on astroturf as of late. In the O's last nine games on artificial turf, the Birds are 8-1.

They'll have another chance to improve that record when they pay a visit to the Toronto Blue Jays on the Rogers Centre turf Wednesday. The Orioles are currently -115 faves with a total of 8.5.

Under has big night in women's hoops

The Under finished 4-1 in the five games on the WNBA board Tuesday. The only Over on the night was Tulsa and Los Angeles. The Shock won 96-90 as the teams combined for 186 points, well above the 161.5-point total.

The season Over/Under record now sits at 87-86 in the WNBA.

Wednesday is an off day in the league, but there will be three games on the board Thursday. San Antonio hosts Phoenix (159.5), Chicago visits Minnesota (157.5) and Atlanta faces Seattle (150.5).

Yankees have Verlander's number in the Bronx

The Bronx has not been friendly territory for Detroit Tigers starter Justin Verlander. In Verlander's last six starts against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, the Tigers are 0-6.

The former Cy Young award winner will try to buck that trend when the Tigers renew acquaintances with the Yanks in the Big Apple Wednesday. Detroit is presently -113 faves on the moneyline with an O/U of nine.
