      • Could favorable schedule help Royals?

        August 25, 2014

Just about everything is going right for the Kansas City Royals these days. They've won 24 of their last 31 games to take over first place in the AL Central.

Even the schedule seems to be breaking their way. The Royals played their last nine games against teams currently in last place - and they'll play 10 of their final 33 against last-place Minnesota, Texas and Boston.

Manager Ned Yost, however, is taking nothing for granted.

''These are the games that `according to the standings' and this and that, these are games you're supposed to come in and win - and that's not always the case,'' Yost said. ''You don't understand the difficulty of coming in and playing a major league game. It's hard to win a major league game.''

The team chasing the Royals in the division can certainly vouch for that. Second-place Detroit had to fight back over the weekend just to salvage a four-game split against the Twins. Minnesota scored 32 runs in the first two games of that series.

According to STATS, the Royals have the easiest schedule in the American League the rest of the way, playing opponents with an aggregate winning percentage of .479. But how significant is that? The Tigers will face teams with a winning percentage of .496, so they'll have a chance to go on a run themselves if they play well enough.

In baseball, there are no gimmes on the schedule - and that's even more true this year, when there's a decent chance nobody will lose 100 games. Texas, which has baseball's worst record, is on pace for 99 defeats. The Twins may be in last place, but they're on pace for 72 wins and just gave Detroit's pitching fits.

And on the flip side, baseball hasn't had a 100-win team since 2011, and nobody is on pace for it this year either. The parity in the game right now is one reason nobody's schedule will be that easy or that hard down the stretch.

For what it's worth, the toughest remaining schedule belongs to Texas - the Rangers can't play against themselves, after all. Their opponents have a .537 winning percentage.

The NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (.467) have the easiest road ahead, but the second-easiest schedule belongs to San Francisco, which trails the Dodgers by 4 1/2 games in the division.

Here are five things to watch around the majors this week:

HOLDING ON?: The Milwaukee Brewers are clinging to a 1 1/2-game lead in the NL Central, but they catch a bit of a break this week because second-place St. Louis will play a three-game series at third-place Pittsburgh. The Brewers will have a chance to gain ground on one or both of those teams.

TATTERED TIGERS: Detroit's starting rotation looked imperious when the Tigers traded for David Price, but injuries to Anibal Sanchez and Justin Verlander left the team in a surprisingly precarious position. Youngsters Robbie Ray and Buck Farmer failed to make it out of the second inning in their starts against the Twins. Verlander is back now, and there's an off day on the schedule Monday, but a doubleheader next weekend against the Chicago White Sox means the Tigers will still have to piece things together.

LAST STAND?: Can the New York Yankees reach the postseason in Derek Jeter's final season? It looked like a longshot, but New York has won four straight to pull within six games of first-place Baltimore in the AL East, and the Yankees are only 3 1/2 games behind Seattle for the second wild card. This week - with a game at Kansas City followed by three at Detroit and three at Toronto - should be telling.

WILD WEST: The Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics have the top two records in baseball, and there's plenty of incentive to win the AL West and avoid the one-game playoff between the league's wild cards. Los Angeles leads by a game after a victory over the A's on Sunday night, and the Angels will host a four-game series between the teams that starts Thursday.

CITY OR STATE?: The Washington Nationals have won 12 of 13 to open an eight-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East. The Nationals will play an interesting interleague series at Seattle starting Friday, but it looks as though Washington will avoid facing Felix Hernandez.

        STAT OF THE WEEK

Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel now has a 1.46 ERA for his career, easily the lowest in baseball history for a pitcher with at least 275 innings.

        • A's lose more than a game

          August 25, 2014

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics dealt with a double dose of injuries even before Sunday night's game against Los Angeles.

Derek Norris was the only catcher available, with Stephen Vogt limited to emergency duty and backup John Jaso headed to the seven-day concussion disabled list.

An MRI on closer Sean Doolittle showed a strained right intercostal, and he was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Losing to the Angels 9-4, falling one game behind them in the AL West standings, may have been the least of Oakland's problems.

''It's several guys, key guys in a row with Jed (Lowrie) and (Nick) Punto,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said. ''It's just something else we need to deal with.''

Jaso, who missed most of last season with concussion-like symptoms, said the dizziness and fuzzy eyesight kept getting worst after he was hit in the mask by a foul ball two weeks ago.

''I've been kind of like muscling through the games, just powering through,'' Jaso said. ''But the symptoms escalated a little bit these past few days and it got to the point where it was a little iffy if I could keep going back there behind the plate and catch.''

Oakland made a trade with Texas to bring in catcher Geovany Soto, who has also been limited this year because of injuries. It also acquired minor league catcher Bryan Anderson from the Cincinnati Reds for international money.

''He's been a starting catcher before and he's a two-way guy,'' Melvin said of Soto. ''He's not one you would say is a defensive specialist or just an offensive guy. He's able to do both. And based on the last couple years, going from an everyday role to non-everyday role, knows how to deal with that.''

Dan Otero was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take Doolittle's spot.

''I felt it on the second to last pitch last night,'' Doolittle said. ''I took a deep breath and tried to relax enough that I didn't feel it until the follow through on my last pitch. It's a good thing it happened that way because I would not have been able to go on.''

The A's received some relatively good news from Josh Donaldson's pregame MRI, which showed no structural damage to his left knee.

''It's just how he feels,'' Melvin said. ''I wasn't going to play him today no matter what. We'll see how he is tomorrow in Houston.''

          TRAINERS ROOM:

Athletics: Doolittle and Jaso are the sixth and seventh A's players on the disabled list, joining INF Kyle Blanks, RHP A.J. Griffin, INF Jed Lowrie, INF Nick Punto and RHP Jerrod Parker. The A's have now used the disabled list 18 times this year after using it 13 all of last year.

          ON DECK

Athletics: RHP Jeff Samardzija (3-3, 4.07 ERA) takes the mound in Houston on Monday night. His five wins against the Astros are his most against any team.

          BREAKING OUT

The A's managed four hits against Angels starter Jered Weaver through the first six innings. They got that many in the seventh against him, including a two-run homer from Alberto Callaspo and a solo shot from Andy Parrino. Eric Sogard added a sacrifice fly against Jason Grilli.

          BY THE NUMBERS

Oakland LHP Scott Kazmir matched his season high for hits (10) and runs (seven) in three-plus innings of work. ''It was just location. I maybe hit one spot the whole game,'' Kazmir said. ''There were times I felt I could take control of the game, get two strikes on a guy and then throw one right down the middle. I felt like I wasn't aggressive enough.'' . The A's were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

          • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Bartolo Colon cleared waivers, can be traded anywhere, just not sure the Angels have any minor league players the Mets would want.

-- USC CB Josh Shaw sprained both ankles jumping from a second story balcony to save his 7-year old nephew, who was drowning. Quite a hero.

-- Eldrick Woods fired his swing coach; when you're not going to be playing for a while, no sense in paying a swing coach.

-- Shin-Soo Choo needs elbow surgery, is done for the year; Rangers are running out of players- their season has been a total disaster.

-- Giancarlo Stanton is 12th player ever with 150+ homers by age 24; wait til he plays his home games in a smaller park, once he leaves Miami.

-- Arizona cut veteran kicker Jay Feely, who got beat out by Christian Catanzaro, a rookie from Clemson. Takes onions to go with a rookie kicker.

            **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

            13) Is Russell Wilson a top 10 NFL QB? Well if he is, he’s better than at least three of these 12 guys, plus a few others-- you make the call.

            Brees
            Rodgers
            Romo
            Newton
            Brady
            Rivers
            Roethlisberger
            Flacco
            PManning
            Stafford
            Foles
            Luck

            12) Major League Baseball needs to announce who in New York City is reviewing these instant replays and making important decisions; in other words, teams need to know who is hosing them on close replay reviews. Maybe they do know, but I’d like to know, too.

            11) Peyton Manning has 491 TD passes, needs 18 more to pass Brett Favre for #1 on the all-time list. He’ll have it before Columbus Day.

            10) The catch Marlins’ SS Adeiny Hechevarria made in short centerfield in the 12th inning Saturday was a great, great play that saved the game at the time for the Marlins, who later lost the game, but this was a great play. If other shortstops loved by the media ever made a play half this good to save a game, they’d be showing it on Sports Center for the next decade.

            9) Rams-Browns game has yet to be re-run on NFL Network because Browns' TV violated some rule about virtual advertising on the broadcast, so the network wouldn’t use their telecast as a re-run. Supposedly they’re going to air the Rams’ broadcast later this week. Curious to see Austin Davis play; think he could help the Rams at QB, down the road.

            8) Northern California wine industry took a hit this weekend with 6.1 earthquake, biggest one in that area since the ’89 quake that happened during the World Series. Over a hundred people were injured this weekend.

            7) Angels acquired Gordon Beckham from the White Sox to play third base, a position he hadn’t played since 2009. A’s traded for Geovany Soto because John Jaso is having concussion problems again and Steven Vogt can’t catch right now because of a foot problem.

            6) I love statistics, but I’m not fond of WAR as a one-stop shopping kind of player evaluator tool. There are too many intangibles, too much of a human element in the game to rely on one number to define a player’s worth. Player might be terrific on the field, but his teammates hate the guy- that stuff doesn’t factor in and it can’t possibly, but it could be important. There will always be a gray area where instinct has to be used to evaluate, whether the Ivy League alums like it or not.

            5) Lines on Ohio State football games swung anywhere from 4.5 to 7 points because of Braxton Miller’s injury; lines on Ram games have dropped only a couple points after Sam Bradford’s injury. NFL teams generally have higher quality subs and better coaching to make up for injuries, and some of that is now wishful thinking on my part, but I do think it is true.

            4) Speaking of Sam Bradford, he’ll have banked $65M in his first five NFL seasons, while playing only 49 of a possible 80 games, zero in the playoffs. Good luck with your next team, sir. He’s a good guy, just not a durable one.

            3) Say what you want about Eli Manning, but every Sunday at 1:00 he takes the field and that is an important quality. Durability might not be a skill per se, but if you have it, it’s a huge plus.

            2) Arizona State’s PG Jahii Carson left college early because he thought he was an NBA player, but now the young man has gone to Australia to start his pro career. If he had stayed in Tempe another year and really improved his skills, say shooting, would that have made him an NBA player? He’s making money now so good for him, but you wonder if cheated himself by leaving ASU early.

            1) NFL and DirecTV are close to re-upping their deal for the Sunday Ticket, at $1.3B or $1.4B a year, for the next 6-8 years. Now we need DirecTV to add the Pac-12 Network; for what we pay for their service, its not too much to ask.

Game of the Day: Cardinals at Pirates
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates (-134, 7.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals are strengthening their hold on the top spot in the National League wild-card race, but it's the NL Central title that they covet. The Cardinals have won nine of their last 12 and look to continue their surge toward division-leading Milwaukee when they resume their three-game series against the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday. The Cardinals are 1 1/2 games behind the Brewers in the division but own a three-game lead over San Francisco atop the wild-card standings, while the Pirates trail the Giants by 1 1/2 contests for the final playoff spot.

The Cardinals notched their 23rd comeback victory of the season in Monday's series opener, scoring three runs in the seventh inning and holding on for a 3-2 triumph. St. Louis does have some concerns at the back end of the bullpen, as closer Trevor Rosenthal gave up a ninth-inning home run by Andrew McCutchen before recording his 39th save - tied with Milwaukee's Francisco Rodriguez for the NL lead. St. Louis leads the season series 8-6.

Lynn has been one of the majors' best pitchers since the All-Star break, going 4-2 with a 1.84 ERA in seven starts. He has won three straight outings and was dominant last time out, holding Cincinnati to four hits over seven scoreless innings. The 27-year-old is 5-3 with a 4.88 ERA in 13 career games (11 starts) against Pittsburgh.

Cole was solid in his return from the disabled list Wednesday, holding Atlanta to two runs and five hits over seven innings, but he didn't get a decision. It was the 23-year-old's first major-league start since July 4. Cole is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA in two outings against St. Louis, including a victory on April 4 in which he gave up two runs over seven frames.
