  • Monday's Tip Sheet

    August 17, 2014

Mariners at Phillies – 7:05 PM EST

    Probable Pitchers:
    SEA: Elias (9-9, 4.14 ERA)
    PHI: Williams (2-5, 6.43 ERA)

Previous series recap: Seattle grabbed two of three at Detroit, capped off by Sunday’s 8-1 blowout as short underdogs. The Phillies return home following a dreadful 1-4 West Coast swing that ended with a 5-2 defeat at San Francisco on Sunday. Philadelphia’s lone victory on that trip came in extra innings at AT&T Park on Friday, as the Phillies have lost six of their last seven road contests.

What to watch for: The Phillies have struggled in interleague play this season, posting a 4-10 record, but Philadelphia pulled off a three-game sweep of Houston in its past IL series at home. The Mariners are making their first trip to Philadelphia since 2003, while the M’s took two of three from the Phillies in their previous series at Safeco Field in 2011.

Braves at Pirates – 7:05 PM EST

    Probable Pitchers:
    ATL: Santana (12-6, 3.66 ERA)
    PIT: Worley (5-2, 2.51 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Braves rebounded from a horrific stretch to start this month by sweeping the AL West-leading Athletics at home. Atlanta won three consecutive games for the first time since late July when the Braves captured the final three contests against the Padres. The Pirates head home after getting swept at Washington, while dropping the final two games to the Nationals in walk-off fashion.

What to watch for: Pittsburgh owns a solid 15-5 record in home series openers this season, while the Pirates have won 13 of their past 17 games at PNC Park. The Braves have dropped five of Ervin Santana’s last six starts on the road, as Atlanta looks to snap an eight-game skid on the highway. The Pirates and Braves are meeting for the first time this season, as the home team won six of seven meetings in 2013.

Angels at Red Sox - 7:10 PM EST

    Probable Pitchers:
    LAA: Wilson (9-8, 4.71 ERA)
    BOS: Workman (1-6, 4.45 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Angels lost the series finale at Texas on Sunday, 3-2, as the Rangers scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to snap a nine-game skid against Los Angeles. The Red Sox split a four-game home set with the Astros, as Boston fell behind 7-0 in Sunday’s 8-1 defeat as a -125 home favorite.

What to watch for: Los Angeles is riding an 8-2 run to the ‘under’ the last 10 games, while its past four contests have been decided by one run apiece. The Red Sox won two of three in Anaheim earlier this month with the lone loss coming in 19 innings. Boston is 4-1 in its past five in the home underdog role, while C.J. Wilson is winless in his last seven road starts for the Angels.

Orioles at White Sox – 8:10 PM EST

    Probable Pitchers:
    BAL: Norris (10-7, 3.75 ERA)
    CHW: Sale (10-2, 2.01 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Orioles avoided a sweep by knocking off the Indians as +120 underdogs on Sunday, 4-1, while limiting Cleveland to just two hits. The White Sox finished off a wild series with the Blue Jays by holding off Toronto, 7-5 on Sunday, as six of those runs came in the opening inning. Chicago took two of three meetings over the weekend, as the Sox are just 4-7 in their last 11 home contests.

What to watch for: Baltimore beat Chicago two of three times at Camden Yards in late June, which included a late rally against the Sox bullpen in the series opening 6-4 win by the O’s. Chicago owns a 9-3 record in Chris Sale’s 12 starts at U.S. Cellular Field this season, but he dropped his past home outing as a -225 favorite against Texas. The Orioles have cashed the ‘under’ in five consecutive road games, while Baltimore is 4-1 in Bud Norris’ past five away starts.

Reds at Cardinals – 8:15 PM EST

    Probable Pitchers:
    CIN: Leake (9-11, 3.59 ERA)
    STL: Masterson (6-7, 5.58 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Reds dropped three games of a four-game set with the Rockies at Coors Field, which included Cincinnati squandering a four-run lead in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 10-9 defeat in the opener of a doubleheader. The Cardinals remain at home after grabbing three of four from the feisty Padres, capped off by a 7-6 victory on Sunday as -200 favorites.

What to watch for: St. Louis has compiled a 6-3 record against Cincinnati this season, which includes a 2-1 mark at Busch Stadium. The Reds are 2-5 in Mike Leake’s past seven trips to the mound, but the right-hander did toss eight scoreless innings in a 4-0 triumph at St. Louis in April as a +130 underdog. Since mid-June, the Cardinals have put together a 7-3 record in their past 10 home series openers, while posting an 8-3 mark in their last 11 home contests against division foes.

    • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

College football is only 11 days away; here is the AP top 6.......

      6) Auburn-- Curious to see if Marshall improved as a passer.

      5) Ohio State-- Have four new starters on OL, but have a senior QB

      4) Oklahoma-- Last eight years, are 30-17 vs spread as home favorite.

      3) Oregon-- Already lost their left tackle for season.

      2) Alabama-- Haven't decided on a starting QB yet.

      1) Florida State-- Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

      **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

      13) Cab driver in Las Vegas posted all 23 of his fares on Twitter Saturday, adding what tip they gave him. After 23 fares, he had $69.30 in tips, so I learned that I'm a better than average tipper.

      12) Reds-Rockies game was postponed Saturday because of a water main break outside the stadium, on a sunny day. They played a split doubleheader Sunday because Todd Helton's number 17 was retired yesterday- that game was sold out.

      11) If you make the Hall of Fame, they'll make a bobblehead of you; former White Sox/A's/Cardinal skipper Tony Larussa had a bobblehead night in Oakland August 9, a figurine day in St Louis yesterday and has a bobblehead day in Chicago Aug. 30.

      10) It takes 27 outs to win a ballgame; quality starting pitchers get you 21+ outs on a regular basis; pretty good starters get you 18+ outs. Suspect starters that cannot finish the 6th inning leave the bullpen exposed to overuse.

Teams like Houston/Bronx who struggle late in games, have starters who struggle getting those 18 outs; that puts undue strain on the bullpen.

      9) Rough week for the A's, who are 7-10 since Lester/Cespedes trade; not sure if its a blip in schedule- all teams have rough times in a six-month season, or if its a real problem, as in, "...we traded our best hitter and now we can't score."

      8) I can make trades in my fantasy league and it does not affect the team, since they are oblivious to what I'm doing-- there is no such thing as team chemistry in fantasy sports, but in Oakland, they basically blew up their offense. Hard as I try, I can't remember a contending team who traded their cleanup hitter during the season.

When the Samardzija trade happened, I wrote, "he (Cespedes) gives the low-budget A's their swagger--once he walks and breaks the bank, a lot of their invincibility goes too," Well, he didn't walk, he got traded and it seems a lot of Oakland's swagger has gone away, at least until someone else steps up and gets some big base hits.

      7) It'll all come out in the end next month, whether the trades worked or not, but I wonder if one more trade for a right-handed bat isn't in Billy Beane's future? A's need more pop in their lineup; doesn't matter who pitches if you can't score.

      6) Remember how NFL teams always had those Polaroids faxed down to the bench so players could study formations? Polaroids have been replaced by tablets; saw a few guys (including Bill Belichick) looking at tablets during games this weekend.

      5) Took 55 at-bats, but Cubs' 2B prospect Javier Baez finally got his first major league walk; he struck out 21 times before that first walk.

      4) Shouldn't major league teams have interpreters for all players who struggle to speak English? Asian players seem to have more interpreters than Hispanic guys who struggle just as much, making a living in a foreign country. Can't be easy.

      3) The way NFL rules are set up now, if you don't throw a lot of vertical passes, you're a damn fool. Defensive backs aren't allowed to breathe on receivers, there are ton of penalties called on DBs, to point where I think eventually, they'll switch to the college rule, where pass interference is 15 yards. Got to stretch the defense.

      2) Memo to directors on NFL games: Don't show hits on QBs in slow motion; it almost always looks like roughing the passer that way. Show it at real speed.

      1) Browns-Redskins on ESPN tonight; Johnny Manziel vs RGIII. Browns said they will alternate QBs every third series. Jon Gruden is analyst on game where his brother Jay is coaching the Redskins; not sure how that will go. Browns' game last week got good ratings on NFL Network. Its still just a preseason game.

Game of the Day: Reds at Cardinals
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals (-145, 7.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals continue their seven-game homestand with a key three-game set beginning Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. St. Louis' Trevor Rosenthal, fourth in the majors with 36 saves, allowed two runs in the ninth inning Sunday and was lifted in St. Louis' 7-6 victory over San Diego, and has yielded runs in three of his last five appearances. "We've worked him pretty hard and we're going to be very careful about how we move forward," manager Mike Matheny told reporters about Rosenthal after the Cardinals increased their wild-card lead to 2 1/2 games while remaining three behind Milwaukee in the Central.

The Reds will likely be a bit bleary-eyed after they were swept in a day-night doubleheader in Colorado, which prevented them from reaching their hotel rooms in St. Louis until the early hours of Monday morning. Cincinnati, which is 4 1/2 games behind San Francisco for the second wild-card spot, will determine prior to the game whether star second baseman Brandon Phillips -- out since July 10 with a thumb injury -- is ready to return after a weekend rehab stint in Triple-A Louisville and Class A Dayton. Justin Masterson makes his fourth start with St. Louis since being acquired prior to the trade deadline and opposes Mike Leake, who lost his last two turns.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

LINE HISTORY: The Cardinals opened as -135 favorites with bettors not shying away from them moving them up to -145.

INJURY WATCH: Reds - 3B Todd Frazier (Doubtful, back), 2B Brandon Phillips (15-day DL, thumb). Cardinals - C Yadier Molina (15-day DL, thumb).

POWER RANKINGS: Reds (-141), Cardinals (-180)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Mike Leake (9-11, 3.59 ERA) vs Cardinals RH Justin Masterson (6-7, 5.58)

Leake permitted five runs and eight hits in five innings of a 5-4 setback to Boston on Wednesday after losing to Miami 2-1. The 26-year-old Californian is 3-5 with a 4.85 ERA in 11 games against the Cardinals - 1-1, 1.29 this season, including a 4-0 victory in St. Louis on April 9 when he yielded four hits in eight innings. Matt Holliday (11-for-28, homer, three doubles, six RBIs) has enjoyed success against Leake, as has Matt Adams (4-for-12, homer, double, two RBIs).

Masterson allowed three hits and struck out three in seven shutout innings of a 5-2 victory at Miami on Wednesday to improve to 2-1 and lower his ERA from 11.25 to 6.00 in three outings with St. Louis. "(Wednesday) was just a great sign of the kind of pitcher he can be when he gets it all put together," Matheny told reporters about the Jamaican-born 29-year-old. "It couldn't have happened at a better time." Masterson is 3-2 with a 2.86 ERA in five starts against Cincinnati -- including a 5-2 victory May 29, 2013 in the last meeting -- while the Reds' active roster (10-for-56, one homer, four RBIs and 12 strikeouts) has struggled against him.

                TRENDS:

                * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
                * Cardinals are 4-1 in their last five vs. National League Central.
                * Reds are 1-5 in Mike Leake's last six starts with four days of rest.

American League action provided huge value for bettors Sunday, as dogs went a stellar 6-1. The dogs dominated the day outscoring the faves 40-24, with the Kansas City Royals contributing 12 of the faves' runs.

There are three games in AL action Monday.

Weather looking calm except for one stadium

The Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals are looking like they may be playing in some bad weather. A large thunderstorm is set to pound Minnesota throughout the day and there is currently a 70 to 80 percent chance of thunderstorms at game time.

All other games on the diamond Monday are scheduled to be clear with minimal wind.

This team is getting dominated against LHP at home

Left-handed pitching has caused headaches for the Minnesota Twins' offense at Target Field in recent games, evidenced by the Twins winning just one out of their last seven games against southpaws at home.

Lefty Jason Vargas will be on the hill for the Kansas City Royals when they take on the Twinkies in Minnesota Monday. The Royals are currently -161 faves with a total of 8.5.

D-Backs winless behind Nuno since trade with NY

Since coming to the Arizona Diamondbacks from the New York Yankees in a trade last month, life in the desert has not been kind to Vidal Nuno. The D-Backs are winless in their seven games with Nuno on the bump.

The 27-year-old gets the ball once again when Arizona visits the Washington Nationals in D.C. Monday. Jordan Zimmerman will counter for the Nats.

Washington is currently heavy -223 faves with an O/U of seven.

                              • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Ohio State QB Braxton Miller re-injured his throwing shoulder; his status for this season is unclear right now.

-- RIP Don Pardo; the former Jeopardy! announcer passed away at age 96.

-- NFL practice squads are expected to go up from eight to ten players.

                                -- Nationals 5, Arizona 4 (11)-- Washington's 3rd straight walk-off win.

-- Braves 7, Pirates 3-- Six straight losses for struggling Pittsburgh, who at least get Andrew McCutchen back tonight.

-- Redskins 24, Browns 23-- Is Johnny Manziel an attention junkie? He cannot be stupid enough to think he can give the finger to the other team in the middle of the field on national TV and not have it become a big thing.

                                **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing somr thinking out loud.......

                                13) Last season, NFL games had an average of 105.6 penalty yards; in two weeks of exhibition games this summer, there have been 164.3 penalty yards per game, as back judges need a whirlpool for their throwing arms with so many flags getting tossed. No one pays to watch officials; league office better be careful regular season games don’t become flagfests. Makes for bad TV, no bueno.

                                12) Thinking about rookie QB’s starting in the NFL; Steve McNair only started six games in his first couple years with the Oilers/Titans, thought it served him well to watch veteran Chris Chandler play. Teams would be well-advised to being their young QB’s along gradually. I’d even have a young QB play Arena Football for a year, to get them used to the faster pace of the pro game.

                                11) How do Kyle Shanahan and Lane Kiffin keep getting prime jobs?

                                10) Read on SI.com Monday that 31 million people play fantasy football. 31 million. That’s a lot of preview magazines and draft kits. Big business.

                                9) Atlanta LT Sam Baker is out for the year; first-round pick Jordan Matthews will take his place. Baker’s father used to be commissioner of the Arena Football. Matthews’ dad is NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews, but Baker’s dad (6-foot-9) is bigger. Go figure.

                                8) Oregon Ducks need basketball players this year, due to some off-court problems they’ve had which cost them some players; they got a good one this week in 6-6 Dillon Brooks from Findlay Prep in Las Vegas. Young man moved up a year to the Class of 2014 to sign up with the Ducks and be eligible to play this fall. Oregon still has only ten scholarship players.

                                7) Vanderbilt announced that two kids won’t be coming back next year because of off-court concerns, players who scored 8.0 and 5.4 ppg. Wonder if those two kids had scored 18.0 and 15.4 ppg if those concerns would be as troubling?

                                6) Serious question: If you’re an NFL coach whose team is playing on Monday Night Football and you’re playing the Redskins, do you mind that you have to have a production meeting with Jon Gruden, whose brother coaches the Redskins? Are there ethical concerns there that Gruden might leak some secrets to his brother?

                                5) Had never heard until last week that the father of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was a standout coach himself, but had a heart attack during a game and died on the way to the hospital. Team he helped coach was playing against the team his oldest son coached. Awful story; wonder if Bob Stoops ever thought about doing something other than coaching?

                                4) Kid named Austin Hatch will play basketball for Michigan this fall; he has survived not one, but two airplane crashes in his young life. Will be an inspiration for many when he takes the court for the first time this fall.

                                3) Arizona Cardinals lost standout DT Darnell Dockett (knee) for the year.

                                2) Seattle Seahawks are teaching a "tackling strike zone" where players can tackle an opponent without getting a penalty; Pete Carroll has done a video on the subject and lot of high school/youth teams are using it as a teaching tool..

                                1) Yu Darvish has three years, $31M left on his contract; he cleared waivers and can now be traded to any team. Question is, how healthy is he?
