Big Ten college football betting preview: Value in middle of conference

The Big Ten may be a new-look conference with 14 teams now in the fold, but the end result should be a similar one with a few absolutely awful teams and a few that could contend for the national championship.

Urban Meyer and Ohio State are hoping to seize what Michigan State took from them last season: a conference title.

Illinois Fighting Illini (2013: 4-8 SU, 6-6 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +10,000
    Season win total: 4.5

Why bet the Fighting Illini: Tim Beckman is heading into his third year as head coach, which has generally been a good one for the top dog at Illinois. Big things are expected of Oklahoma State transfer Wes Lunt at quarterback. Lunt will have Josh Ferguson (779 rushing yards) back in the backfield.

Why not bet the Fighting Illini: The Illini lost three key receivers, so they are not riddled with veterans who can help Lunt ease into his new role. On the defensive side of the ball, Illinois recorded a total of 15 sacks last season. The unit returns eight starters, but that might not be a good thing.

Season win total pick: Under 4.5

    Indiana Hoosiers (2013: 5-7 SU, 5-6-1 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +10,000
    Season win total: 5.5

Why bet the Hoosiers: Head coach Kevin Wilson is likely to do away with a two-quarterback system, so Nate Sudfeld will be able to get into more of rhythm. Regardless, the Hoosiers’ offense will be led by running back Tevin Coleman. With a star back and what should be Indiana’s best offensive line in years, Sudfeld will be in position to succeed.

Why not bet the Hoosiers: The Hoosiers are consistently a juggernaut on offense and nothing short of a disaster on defense. They allowed more than 38 points and 500 yards per game last season. A new defensive coordinator is obviously a wise move, but a transition to a 3-4 scheme may take some time. Indiana has only six home games after having eight in 2013.

Season win total pick: Under 5.5

    Iowa Hawkeyes (2013: 8-5 SU, 8-5 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +1,400
    Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Hawkeyes: Iowa is on the rise after a four-win improvement to 8-5 last season. The team returns quarterback Jake Rudock, leading rusher Mark Weisman, leading receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley, and stud left tackle Brandon Scherff. The Hawkeyes do not have Ohio State, Michigan, or Michigan State on the 2014 schedule.

Why not bet the Hawkeyes: Six starters from the 2013 squad are gone, including all three linebackers and all-conference cornerback B.J. Lowery. The departure of NFL third-round draft pick C.J. Fiedorowicz leaves a void at tight end.

Season win total pick: Over 8.5

    Maryland Terrapins (2013: 7-6 SU, 7-6 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +10,000
    Season win total: 7.5

Why bet the Terrapins: Maryland has improved from two wins to four wins to seven wins in three years under head coach Randy Edsall. His program will be inspired to get off to a fast start in a new conference and send a message to the Big Ten. Seven starters, including QB C.J. Brown, are back on offense and a whopping nine return on defense.

Why not bet the Terrapins: The ACC was bad last season outside of national champion Florida State, which may explain Maryland’s win total but also could leave the team unprepared for the spike in both competition and ruggedness in the Big Ten. The offensive line is somewhat depleted and the schedule includes dates with Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Michigan.

Season win total pick: Under 7.5

    Michigan Wolverines (2013: 7-6 SU, 7-6 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +900
    Season win total: 7.5

Why bet the Wolverines: Head coach Brady Hoke managed to hire offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier away from Alabama. Nussmeier will have Devin Gardner back in action for the quarterback’s last hurrah in Ann Arbor. On defense, the Wolverines return all three starting linebackers and welcome prized cornerback recruit Jabrill Peppers.

Why not bet the Wolverines: This is the youngest team in Hoke’s four-year tenure at Michigan and the program seems to be stuck in neutral following an 11-win campaign in its first season under Hoke. The Wolverines allowed a nation-worst 114 tackles for loss last year and star offensive tackle Taylor Lewan has left for the NFL.

Season win total pick: Over 7.5

Michigan State Spartans (2013: 13-1 SU, 9-4-1 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +400
    Season win total: 9.5

Why bet the Spartans: Michigan State is coming off a dream season in which it won the Big Ten title and the Rose Bowl. Quarterback Connor Cook (MVP of both the conference champion and the bowl game) is back, as is running back Jeremy Langford. The Spartans also boast one of the best duos of defensive ends in the nation.

Why not bet the Spartans: Six starters have departed last year’s defensive unit and just one starting linebacker returns. It’s hard to see the Spartans finishing second and third in the nation in total and scoring defense, respectively, yet again. The schedule includes Ohio State, Michigan, and road trips to Oregon and Penn State.

Season win total pick: Over 9.5

Minnesota Golden Gophers (2013: 8-5 SU, 9-4 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +5,000
    Season win total: 6.5

Why bet the Golden Gophers: Minnesota has improved from three wins to six wins to eight wins in three years under head coach Jerry Kill. He is building his program with defense (25th in the nation in scoring defense last season), just like he did at Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois. Much of the offense returns, including leading rusher David Cobb.

Why not bet the Golden Gophers: Philip Nelson transferred and quarterback Mitch Leidner has minimal starting experience. Wide receiver is likely to be a problem following the departure of Derrick Engel. Kill’s health issues are also a concern. Minnesota has to play Michigan and Ohio State from the Big Ten East.

Season win total pick: Under 6.5

    Nebraska Cornhuskers (2013: 9-4 SU, 7-6 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +550
    Season win total: 7.5

Why bet the Cornhuskers: Quarterback Tommy Armstrong has a year of experience under his belt and he has two of the top skill players in the conference at his disposal in running back Ameer Abdullah and receiver Kenny Bell. Defensive end Randy Gregory led the Big Ten in sacks last season.

Why not bet the Cornhuskers: Bo Pelini has been solid in six seasons, but he has not taken Nebraska to serious national prominence or even legitimate conference contention. The pressure is on in major way right now. Only three starters return on defense. A tough schedule includes games at Michigan State, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

Season win total pick: Over 7.5

    Northwestern Wildcats (2013: 5-7 SU, 3-9 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +4,000
    Season win total: 6.5

Why bet the Wildcats: Northwestern went just 5-7 last season, but it lost two games in overtime and dropped two more by three points each. Seven starters return on defense and the offense once again features QB Trevor Siemian and RB Venric Mark. The Big Ten schedule lacks both Michigan State and Ohio State.

Why not bet the Wildcats: The Wildcats are coming off a bowl-less season after making it to the postseason in five consecutive years. An offensive line that was bad in 2013 doesn’t project to be much better. Injuries to the defense already mounted during the spring.

Season win total pick: Over 6.5

Ohio State Buckeyes (2013: 12-2 SU, 6-7-1 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: -110
    Season win total: 10.5

Why bet the Buckeyes: Quarterback Braxton Miller is back and has speedsters all around him on offense. Urban Meyer has brought in another outstanding recruiting class that should be able to contribute immediately. Ohio State’s defensive line should be scary. The schedule is a friendly one aside from a road trip to Michigan State.

Why not bet the Buckeyes: Ohio State wrapped up its 2013 campaign on a two-game losing streak. Running back Carlos Hyde is gone. So are four starters on the offensive line. Linebacker Ryan Shazier has also headed to the NFL.

Season win total pick: Over 10.5

Penn State Nittany Lions (2013: 7-5 SU, 5-7 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: N/A
    Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Nittany Lions: New head coach James Franklin was a proven winner at Vanderbilt. He inherits a rising star at quarterback in sophomore Christian Hackenberg. The road schedule is friendly and PSU gets to play both Ohio State and Michigan State at home.

Why not bet the Nittany Lions: Penn State is still under NCAA sanctions, so depth is a problem and the team is not eligible for the postseason. Franklin has a tough job ahead of him for those two reasons. The Nittany Lions also have only one healthy returning starter on the offensive line.

Season win total pick: Under 8.5

    Purdue Boilermakers (2013: 1-11 SU, 3-8-1 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +25,000
    Season win total: 3.5

Why bet the Boilermakers: Purdue has an experienced defense, led by Ryan Russell, Sean Robinson, and Joe Gilliam in the front seven. Track star Raheem Mostert is a home-run threat on offense. The schedule is a good one, with Michigan and Ohio State nowhere to be found and five home games to start.

Why not bet the Boilermakers: The Boilermakers were a horrendous 1-11 in their first year under head coach Darrell Hazell. Purdue’s best player in 2013 was punter Cody Webster. The offensive line remains a huge concern.

Season win total pick: Under 3.5

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2013: 6-7 SU, 5-8 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +20,000
    Season win total: 4.5

Why bet the Scarlet Knights: Former Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen is in as offensive coordinator - a post at which he excelled with Georgia Tech. Rutgers returns all five starters on the offensive line. The running back duo of Paul James and Justin Goodwin is also back.

Why not bet the Scarlet Knights: The Scarlet Knights will be making a tough transition from the American Athletic Conference to the Big Ten. There is already a quarterback controversy with Gary Nova and Chris Laviano. Rutgers’ defense was historically bad last season (it also has a new coordinator on that side of the ball) and the schedule is the toughest in school history.

Season win total pick: Under 4.5

    Wisconsin Badgers (2013: 9-4 SU, 9-3-1 ATS)

    Odds to win conference: +450
    Season win total: 9.5

Why bet the Badgers: With four starters on the offensive line returning and Melvin Gordon at running back, Wisconsin should boast one of the best ground games in the nation. The schedule is phenomenal. The Badgers’ toughest road game is at Iowa and they won’t face either Ohio State or Michigan State.

Why not bet the Badgers: Head coach Gary Andersen’s first season ended with a sour two-game losing streak. Personnel changes abound, with only a total of eight starters returning. Tanner McEvoy and Joel Stave are relative question marks at quarterback and the front seven on defense is 100 percent new.

Season win total pick: Over 9.5

      Brickyard provides element of unpredictability

The Brickyard is the home of champions.

      Or is it?

      A quick point-counterpoint on the subject…

      Point

Heading into the 20th anniversary of NASCAR racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN), legendary names have conquered more often than not.

      For instance,

-- 15 of the 20 races have been won by past, future or reigning series champions

-- Eight winners have gone on to win that year's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.

-- Three NASCAR Hall of Famers have won: Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jarrett (twice) and Bill Elliott. Three others, at least, will undoubtedly one day be enshrined: Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewar).

      Counterpoint

Lately, those facts above have been turned on their head.

The recent winners include Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard and Ryan Newman, all of whom are winless in 2014. Even Stewart, a two-time Brickyard winner, still seeks his first victory of the season.

A part-time driver like Juan Pablo Montoya could win -- and probably should have in 2009, if not for a pit road speeding penalty. Montoya will make his second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start of the season on Sunday, driving the No. 12 Team Penske Ford.

Either way, know this: This race should be interesting.

No driver falls into both the "legit contender" and "potential surprise" categories like Stewart. The three-time series champion remains winless and in real danger of missing the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

But Stewart boasts a brilliant history at his home track, so there's hope. The two-time Brickyard winner has finished in the top 10 in five consecutive Indianapolis races and nine of the last 10.

"You always want to win it," Stewart said. "Every driver has a home race. Some of the tracks we go to twice, and Indy is one we get to go to once, and this is our trip to it.

"If you can only win one race a year, I'm still going to pick the Daytona 500. But if you can't win Daytona as that one race a year, I want to win the Brickyard. It's always big when you come home. It's always big when you have friends and family that don't get the opportunity to go see you race anywhere else but can be there in person to watch and experience it. So you always want to run well."

Chase Elliott hopes to join Dad on Brickyard wins list

Chase Elliott, the runaway leader in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year battle, has three wins and the NASCAR Nationwide Series points lead. He's zeroing in on the season wins record of five held by Greg Biffle (2001), Kyle Busch (2004) and Carl Edwards (2005). No rookie has won the Nationwide Series championship.

But more immediately, there's Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where Chase and his father Bill can become the first father-son winners in NASCAR’s 21-year history at the track.

The Dawsonville, Ga., native will be making his series debut at Indianapolis this weekend, the track at which his father and NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Bill Elliott won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in 2002.

"It's one of the places I look back on, I do have memories of The Brickyard win he (Bill Elliott) had, I think it was 2002," Chase Elliott said. "That’s a special racetrack for me. I always love going back there ever since then knowing he has been to Victory Lane. We are going to give it our best shot.”

JR Motorsports has won seven of the 18 races this season -- Elliott (Texas, Darlington and Chicago), Kevin Harvick (Richmond, Kentucky), Regan Smith (Daytona-1) and Kasey Kahne (Daytona-2). The team has led the driver points after 17 of 18 races this year (Elliott Sadler was the lone outlier, leading the points after Kentucky).

Game of the Day: Blue Bombers at Lions
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Winnipeg Blue Bombers at B.C. Lions (-8.5, 52.5)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and host BC Lions are heading in opposite directions as they prepare to meet Friday. Winnipeg lost its first game of the season in Week 4 while the Lions are riding a two-game winning streak after stumbling to start the season. Friday’s contest will be a battle between Winnipeg’s league-best offense (118 points for) and BC’s stifling defense (69 points allowed).

Lions quarterback Kevin Glenn recorded 301 passing yards last week in his best outing since joining BC. Drew Willy and the Blue Bombers were ground to a halt by the Edmonton Eskimos in a 26-3 loss after recording at least 30 points in each of their first three games and will need to bounce back against a similarly difficult defensive unit with the Lions, who allow a league-low 168 passing yards per contest. BC re-established its home dominance after dropping its season opener and can tie Winnipeg in the West Division with a victory.

        TV:
        10 p.m. ET, TSN

        LINE HISTORY:
The Lions opened favored by a converted touchdown. It has since moved at B.C. -8.5. The total opened at 53.5 and has been bet down to 52.5.

        INJURY REPORT:
Lions: QB Kevin Glenn - probable (back), QB Travis Lulay - questionable (shoulder)

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (3-1, 3-1 ATS):
Running back Nic Grigsby has 268 rushing yards and three touchdowns in his first CFL season. Defensive end Jason Vega will likely miss Friday’s game due to what the team calls various ailments, joining defensive back Johnny Sears Jr., who has a hamstring issue. Receivers Aaron Kelly and Cory Watson were injured in Week 4, which had a noticeable effect on Willy’s effectiveness.

ABOUT THE LIONS (2-2, 2-2 ATS):
Glenn benefited from the return of receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux, who led the team with 145 yards in his season debut. Running back Andrew Harris has 585 total combined yards after adding 150 last week. Linebacker Solomon Elimimian leads the league with 24 tackles, while teammate Adam Bighill is second with 21.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings in B.C.
        * Under is 14-4 in the last 18 meetings.
        * Blue Bombers are 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight meetings in B.C.
        * Lions are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games following a straight up win.

        CONSENSUS:
The consensus is split between the Blue Bombers and Lions at -8.5.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB betting cheat sheet: Lee a strong Over play
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Nine is Enough

The San Diego Padres (-123, O 7) erupted for a season-high nine runs in the sixth inning en route to a 13-3 thumping of the host Chicago Cubs on Thursday. The Padres have gone Over the total in back-to-back games for just the third time since the end of May.

                    Simon Sliding?

Cincinnati starter Alfredo Simon will look to bounce back from a rough first outing of the second half as he leads the Reds (-134) against the visiting Washington Nationals. Simon leads the majors in value (+$1,230) but was trounced 7-1 by the Yankees in his first start following the All-Star break.

                    Over-Lee Predictable

Philadelphia lefty Cliff Lee has been a strong Over play this season as he and the Phillies entertain the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night. Lee, one of the stingiest hurlers in baseball over the past seven years, is 7-3-1 O/U and has five Overs in his last six outings.

                    Wainwright to Rebound?

Expect a strong effort from St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright as he faces the host Cubs. Wainwright is coming off a loss to Tampa Bay last time out; the Cardinals have followed all four of their previous losses in Wainwright starts with victories in his next outing.

                    Pitching Notes

                    * Toronto left-hander Mark Buehrle has yet to figure out the New York Yankees. Buehrle, whose Blue Jays (+123, 8) visit the Bronx on Friday, is 1-11 with a 5.81 ERA in 18 career starts versus the Yankees.

                    * Baltimore right-hander Bud Norris looks to continue his red-hot run Saturday as the Orioles visit Seattle. Norris is 5-1 against the moneyline in his last six starts while putting together a five-game Under streak.

                    * Boston Red Sox righty Jake Peavy carries the worst value in the majors into Sunday's tilt against the Tampa Bay Rays. Peavy is at a dismal $-1,371 for the season, while the Red Sox have lost his last nine starts.

                    Hitting Notes

                    * Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts is mired in a lengthy slump, batting just .157 since the end of may to see his average for the season dip to .237. Coincidentally, Bogaerts is a career .237 hitter against the Rays (-134, 6.5), who host Boston on Friday.

                    * It should come as no surprise that the San Francisco Giants have struggled versus Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw. Members of the Giants roster are hitting a combined .214 in 276 at-bats versus Kershaw, who takes the hill Saturday night.

                    * Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter may be a good bet to add to his Hall of Fame hit total Sunday against the Blue Jays. Jeter is a career 6-for-11 hitter against Toronto starter JA Happ, with a pair of home runs and three RBIs.

                    Totals Streak

Cincinnati Reds (0-4 O/U): The Reds enjoyed a much-needed day of rest Thursday after capping a winless six-game road trip with a 5-1 thumping at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers. Cincinnati, which scored just 12 runs during the trek, is 45-53-3 O/U for the season.

                    Prop of the Day

Expect a closely contested affair in St. Petersburg between Boston's Jon Lester and fellow southpaw David Price. Bettors should look at either team to win by exactly one run, with the Red Sox valued at +500 to do so and Tampa Bay set at +325.

                    Injury Notes

                    * The New York Yankees may be forced to place first baseman Mark Teixeira on the 15-day disabled list with a lat injury. Teixeira has already missed 25 games this season, with the Yankees going 13-12 SU, 11-13-1 O/U and earning 154 units in those contests.

                    * Minnesota Twins hurler Phil Hughes survived a scare after taking a liner off his right shin Thursday against the Chicago White Sox. X-rays came back negative on Hughes, who left in the fourth inning but remains fourth in the majors in money earned so far in 2014 (+$818)

                    Weather Watch

                    * Wind at Wrigley Field will blow out to left field at 11 mph for Friday's game between the host Cubs and the Cardinals. Teams have combined to go 2-9 O/U over the previous three seasons with the wind blowing out to left.

                    * Philadelphia fans will be treated to wind blowing out to center field at 9 mph Saturday as the Phillies entertain the Arizona Diamondbacks. The home side won just seven of 20 games under similar wind conditions in 2013, with a 12-7-1 O/U.

                      Friday, July 25

White Sox cashing in for Under bettors

If you've been backing the Under in Chicago White Sox games lately, you've been collecting some nice profits. Through Thursday, seven of the ChiSox's last eight games have gone Under the total. The Minnesota Twins will host the Sox at Target Field Friday.

The Twinkies are currently -114 faves with an O/U of nine.

When these clubs meet, high totals tend to follow

The scorekeeper has been busy in recent meetings between the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds. In the last 11 matchups between the two clubs, the O/U is 8-2-1 through Thursday. They'll renew acquaintances at Great American Ball Park Friday.

The Nats are -111 faves on the moneyline with a total of 7.5.

This betting trend needs your attention

If you've been putting your money on the Kansas City Royals as favorites with Yordano Ventura on the mound this season, you're definitely wishing you hadn't. The Royals are just 1-7 in Ventura's last eight starts when listed as faves.

Ventura gets the nod Friday for KC when they host the Cleveland Indians. Royals bettors beware, though: Kansas City is presently listed as -130 faves on the moneyline with a total of eight.

Trends show Padres love playing against Atlanta

It's been a tough season for the San Diego Padres, but their backers can find some solace for Friday's matchup with the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. Through Thursday, the Pads own a 6-1 record in their last seven meetings with the Braves.

Atlanta is currently a -156 fave on the moneyline with a total of seven.

                      Buehrle, Jays struggling vs. Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Mark Buehrle has been getting knocked around by the New York Yankees recently. In the veteran's last six starts versus the Bronx Bombers, Toronto is just 1-5. Buehrle and the Jays will try and turn things around against the Yankees in New York Friday.

The Yanks are currently -133 faves with a total of eight.

Red Sox have poor record vs. lefties on the road

The Boston Red Sox have had a tough time on the road versus left-handed pitchers recently, posting a paltry 1-9 record in their last 10 games as of Thursday. That's bad news for Sox backers as they'll take on southpaw David Price and the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field Friday.

The Rays are -140 home faves with a total of 6.5.

                      Boston's Ortiz questionable for Friday

The Boston Red Sox are not sure what to expect from their most dangerous hitter, David Ortiz, when they take on the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-game series starting on Friday at Tropicana Field.

Ortiz, who hit four homers in the first three games of a four-game series against the Blue Jays, had to leave the series finale Thursday with back spasms.

He could not finish his at-bat in the ninth inning of an 8-0 loss to the Blue Jays. After checking his swing on a ball, he left in some discomfort and outfielder Jonny Gomes took over the at-bat and hit a game-ending fly ball.

A's LF Yoenis Cespedes, questionable Friday

Cespedes left Wednesday's game with a right thumb injury and did not play Thursday. He is questionable to return on Friday against the Rangers.

                        Friday, July 25

The CFL total trend you need to check out

The Calgary Stampeders beat the Edmonton Eskimos 26-22 Thursday night, resulting in yet another game landing below the point total and extending the streak of games going under.

Teams in the Canadian Football League have gone under the point total in eight consecutive games and are now 4-13 over/under for the season. The under is hitting 76.47 percent of the time.

There is one CFL game on tap for Friday night with the BC Lions hosting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The total for the game is currently set at 52.
