    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Cardinals won again at Miller Park, are now tied for first place in NL Central, while Reds/Pirates are also within three games of the top.

-- Red Sox are in last place, have the 3rd-worst record in the AL.

-- When Utah Jazz started both Enes Kanter/Derrick Favors LY, they went 3-25, so they need to find better perimeter guys- those two can't play together.

-- Paul Pierce signed a two-year deal with the Washington Wizards.

-- Seattle Mariners have solid pitching, but their September playoff run will have 18 road games, only nine home games, not exactly the optimum schedule.

-- Baseball writers with nothing better to do are now speculating the Phillies are going to sell off some of their stars this month. Easier said than done.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday..........

    13) Surprised to see that Lebron James' contract is only two years, and he can opt out next summer, so all this drama could play out again next year. Oy.

    12) July is definitely the best month for NBAtv, with summer league games on all day for two weeks. Kind of like MLB Network in March, with spring training games on all day long. Summer league basketball is highly competitive, marginal NBA guys and rookies fighting for jobs, both in the NBA and overseas.

    11) Interesting to see that there are three starting pitchers who throw splitters more than 20% of the time; all three are Japanese. Tim Hudson (16%) throws it the most of any American pitcher.

    10) One of our heroes is Bob Uecker, who hit exactly .200, with 14 homers in his undistinguished 6-year playing career (297 games). Three of those homers came against Hall of Famers-- Sandy Koufax, Ferguson Jenkins, Gaylord Perry. .

    9) Golfer Steve Stricker has made so much money that he has voluntarily reduced his playing schedule, to spend more time with his family-- he's even turned down trips to the British Open the last two years, but has played in the Quad Cities event, which he's won three times and is close where he grew up. He's only one shot out of the lead at Quad Cities starting today's final round.

    8) I'm late with this, but Friday was Cow Appreciation Day at Chik-fil-A's all over this great country of ours; in their words, "eat more chikin'".

    7) David Phelps has started 13 games for the Bronx Bombers this year; if you had stopped all thirteen after the fifth inning, Bronx would've been 7-5-1, but thats not how it works- their bullpen is 0-6, the team is 3-10 when he starts.

    6) Texas Rangers have lost seven games in a row, 22 of last 26 and are an injury-riddled mess right now; if you play them and don't sweep, its highly disappointing. They have the worst record in all of baseball, with no help in sight this year.

    5) Jordan Zimmerman (biceps strain) left Washington's game early Saturday, which isn't as bad as it sounds- he might avoid the DL- they need him healthy.

    4) Andrew McCutchen homered in the 9th and again in the 11th as the Pirates pulled out a dramatic 6-5 win in Cincinnati.

    3) NBA legend Walt Frazier working a 76ers' game Saturday night: "Nerlens Noel has to gain weight." One of the values of staying in school is that you get to grow into your body before you become a pro. Noel can't guard NBA big guys yet-- his body is still a kid's body, not a grown adult's.

    2) Five Georgia Bulldog alumni have won PGA Tour events this year; if Brian Harman wins Sunday, and he is leading, he will be the sixth.

    1) Our thoughts/prayers go out to the family of Milwaukee Brewers' SS Juan Segura, who lost his 9-month old son on Friday. Just a terribly sad thing.

Keselowski dominates Nationwide Series race at New Hampshire

LOUDON, N.H. – Taking a deep breath at the winner's podium, Brad Keselowski took a second to savor his dominant Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Keselowski captured the pole, then led 152 of 200 laps to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series Sta-Green 200. In addition, he posted the fastest times in both NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice sessions in preparation for Sunday’s Camping World RV Sales 301.

"One helluva Saturday," said Keselowski, who recorded a perfect driver rating for the sixth time in his Nationwide career and has finished no worse than third in any of his six Nationwide Series starts this season.

"Sometimes on these really busy days you get so caught up in the action that you really can’t appreciate all that’s transpired.

"We have so much to be proud of there and, obviously, we’re looking forward to tomorrow and the opportunity we have. Our Cup car was fast this morning. Our Nationwide car in qualifying had a lot of adversity but we fought through that and got the pole. In the Nationwide race the car was really fast."

In addition, Keselowski’s Penske-prepared Hertz Mustang became the first Nationwide Series car to win from the pole position in 17 races this season. He also won the March 8 race at Las Vegas and now has 29 victories in 211 Nationwide races.

Kyle Busch, the pole-sitter for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race, was Keselowski’s primary competition and finished second ahead of Matt Kenseth, Kyle Larson and rookie Chris Buescher.

"It was a bit of a dogfight – one of the most challenging races I’ve ever ran, knowing that you have Kyle Busch behind you and he’s just a tiny bit faster," said Keselowski, whose only mistake was accidentally dropping the American flag during his victory lap. "You have to fight through a line of cars and it seemed like there was always something coming at us."

Busch pulled to within a car length of Keselowski’s rear bumper with 29 laps to go, but got loose on Lap 173, slid up the track and dropped nearly a second off the pace with 25 laps left. Taking advantage of lap traffic in the final 20 laps, Keselowski’s eventual winning margin was 1.8 seconds.

"It was actually very hard-fought there at the end," Keselowski said. "He (Busch) was really good at making adjustments. I didn’t think I was going to be able to hold him off."

Busch led the first 34 laps but never led again in falling just short of his fifth win in nine Nationwide Series starts at New Hampshire.

"We got what we could out of our Monster Energy Camry," Busch said. "We had the best run there at the end but just not quite enough. We had to fight hard to get by a few guys, got to second but didn’t have quite enough to chase (Keselowski) down.

"If it was clean and green all the way to the end I don’t know if I could have got to him. I was hoping for a couple opportunities there in traffic."

Keselowski asserted his car as the one to beat, leading 66 of the first 100 laps. By Lap 66, only Busch (2.88) and Kenseth (9.25) were within 10 seconds of Keselowski’s yellow No. 22 Mustang.

True to its name, the Sta-Green 200 stayed caution-free for 76 laps prior to a yellow flag for debris on Lap 93 that tightened the field.

Busch struggled after the restart while Larson seized the opportunity and tucked in second behind Keselowski. And he wasn’t second for long.

When Brian Scott got into the back of third-place Elliott Sadler, it touched off a spin that involved seven cars, enabling Larson to seize the lead.

Larson led the race twice for 11 laps. But when things settled down after the race’s fourth caution, Keselowski regained the top spot and went on to dominate the final 56 laps.

Series points leader Regan Smith didn’t have a top-five car but was the big bonus winner, capturing the $100,000 payoff in the first of four Dash 4 Cash races courtesy of Nationwide Insurance.

Smith finished ahead of championship-eligible Nationwide Series drivers Ryan Reed (11th), Ryan Sieg (18th) and Jeremy Clements (20th), each of whom qualified for the Dash last week at Daytona International Speedway.

Smith was in control of the Dash for most of the race but had trouble during a four-tire change in the pits with 55 laps left. Although Reed restarted in seventh and Smith ninth, Smith regained command on his fresh rubber and maintained his advantage the rest of the way.

"The race was difficult for us," Smith said. "We didn’t have the speed I thought we were going to have. The last pit stop we decided to go for four (tires), had a little hiccup, and it cost us some positions. At that point, you kind of know the situation for the day and it’s 'OK, let’s take the silver lining and get out of here with the money. This means a lot to our team."

Smith, Buescher, Sadler and Scott emerged as qualifiers for the second of four Dash 4 Cash races next Saturday at Chicagoland Speedway.

Smith also became the only driver eligible for a $600,000 bonus – which will translate to $1 million in total prize money should he win the Dash 4 Cash at Chicagoland next weekend and Indianapolis Motor Speedway (July 26), then win the Aug. 2 race at Iowa Speedway outright.

Smith retained the series points lead by eight points over Sadler, who finished sixth, and 13 over Chase Elliott, who finished eighth.

Tigers' ace historically weak against Royals

Justin Verlander is far from his usual elite self this season and signs don't point to that changing. In Verlander's last four starts against the Kansas City Royals, the over/under record is 3-0-1.

Verlander gives up an average of eight hits per game, including a dreadful 15-hits in his last start. The teams have averaged 12 runs per game in Verlander's last four.

White Sox pitcher paying out for total bettors

The Chicago White Sox will send John Danks to the mound Sunday with a 5-1-1 over/under record against the Cleveland Indians.

Danks has given up four or more runs in four of those starts, including eight in his last start against the Tribe.

MLB roundup: Brewers SS Segura's son dies
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura returned to his native Dominican Republic after learning of the death of his 9-month-old son.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Saturday that Segura was placed on the bereavement list. Segura found out about his son's death after Friday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Roenicke did not give details about the boy's death and said he was not sure when Segura would return to the team.

The club recalled infielder Elian Herrera from Triple-A Nashville to take Segura's spot on the 25-man roster.

---Miami Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez will replace Washington Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmermann on the National League roster for Tuesday's All-Star game in Minneapolis.

Zimmermann (6-5, 3.03 ERA) exited Friday night's start against the Philadelphia Phillies after 3 1/3 innings due to a right biceps injury. Alvarez is 6-4 with a 2.63 ERA in 19 starts this season.

---The Cleveland Indians recalled right-hander Zach McAllister from Triple-A Columbus on Saturday and optioned right-hander Vinnie Pestano to Columbus.

McAllister, 26, has split the season between Cleveland and Columbus. He began the year in the Cleveland rotation and went 3-4 with a 5.89 ERA in 10 starts before going on the 15-day disabled list on May 22 with lower back inflammation. He was optioned to Columbus on June 20 and has gone 5-0 with a 2.23 ERA in six starts with the Clippers.

Pestano is 0-1 with a 5.00 ERA in nine innings in 13 appearances with Cleveland this season.

NBA roundup: Anthony, Knicks work on deal
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The New York Knicks and forward Carmelo Anthony are negotiating a new contract, ESPN reported Saturday.

Anthony, a free agent, was being pursued heavily by the Chicago Bulls and Houston Rockets, but have reportedly been told that the All-Star is staying in New York.

Knicks president Phil Jackson said Thursday that he had not been in recent contact with Anthony, but the team had made five different offers to re-sign him. One of the deals was reportedly for the maximum five years and $129 million. A maximum deal would pay Anthony $22.5 million in the first year of the contract.

---The day after LeBron James announced that he's returning to Cleveland, he reached agreement on a contract with the Cavaliers on Saturday.

The deal is for two years and $42.1 million. James took a short-term deal because he hopes to maximize his earning potential by re-signing for the 2016-17 season when a new television contract is expected to boost salaries.

Under terms of the contract, James has an option to become a free agent after the 2014-15 season, but ESPN reported that he is committed to the Cavaliers over the long haul.

---Free agent power forward Pau Gasol confirmed Saturday on Twitter that he will sign with the Chicago Bulls.

"It hasn't been easy," Gasol tweeted. "After meditating it a lot I've chosen to play with the Chicago Bulls. Looking forward to this new chapter of my career."

Gasol spent the past six seasons with the Lakers, but he recently turned down two contract offers. The first offer was for two years and worth $23 million and the other was a three-year, $29 million offer, according to ESPNLosAngeles.com. Gasol, 34, averaged 17.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game last season, despite a career-low 31.4 minutes per game. He made $19 million last season.

---Free agent shooting guard Vince Carter signed with the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, a day after they lost Mike Miller.

Terms of the deal were not released by the team, but multiple media outlets reported that the contract is for three years and worth more than $12 million.

Carter, 37, helps fill the void left by Miller in Memphis. Carter spent the past three seasons with the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 11.9 points in 81 games off the bench last season.

---The Utah Jazz retained restricted free agent guard Gordon Hayward.

Hayward's agent, Mark Bartelstein, told ESPN.com Saturday that the Jazz matched the Charlotte Hornets' four-year, $63 million offer sheet.

Hayward's new offer is worth an average of $15.75 million per season. The 24-year-old is coming off career highs with 16.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists last season.

---The Phoenix Suns announced Saturday that they completed a sign-and-trade deal with the Sacramento Kings to acquire guard Isaiah Thomas for the rights to forward Alex Oriakhi.

The Kings also get a $7 million trade exemption.

Thomas averaged career-highs of 20.3 points on 45.3 percent shooting, 6.3 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 72 games with the Kings last season. He was one of just six players in the NBA to average at least 20 points and six assists.

---Forward Trevor Ariza agreed to a four-year, $32 million deal with the Houston Rockets, USA Today reported Saturday.

Ariza spent the past two seasons with the Washington Wizards. He played with the Rockets in 2009-10 when he averaged a career-best 14.9 points per game.

The Rockets created salary cap space, in part to try to land forward Chris Bosh. However, Bosh agreed to return to the Miami Heat on a five-year, $118 million deal on Friday. Houston is also deciding whether it will match the Dallas Mavericks' three-year, $46 million offer made to forward Chandler Parsons on Wednesday.

---The San Antonio Spurs re-signed guard Patty Mills and first-round draft pick Kyle Anderson.

Terms of Mills' deal were not released by the team, but the San Antonio Express-News reported it was a three-year contract.

Mills averaged 10.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game last season for the NBA champs. Anderson, a forward, averaged 14.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 6.5 assists with UCLA last season.

---Free agent guard Anthony Morrow agreed to a three-year, $10 million contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Morrow's agent, Wallace Prather, confirmed the deal with the Associated Press on Saturday.

Morrow averaged 8.4 points per game with the New Orleans Pelicans last season. He has career averages of 10.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in six NBA seasons with the Golden State Warriors, New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks and Pelicans.

---The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired center Brendan Haywood and the draft rights to forward Dwight Powell from the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday for guard Scotty Hopson and cash considerations.

Haywood has averaged 6.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 23.4 minutes over 794 career NBA games (548 starts) over 12 seasons with the Washington Wizards, Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Bobcats. His 52.8 career field goal percentage ranks ninth among active players.

Powell, a second-round pick out of Stanford, averaged 10.8 points and 6.3 rebounds in 26.2 minutes per game in four years with the Cardinal. Hopson appeared in two games with the Cavaliers last season after signing March 31. Before that, he played in Greece (2011-12), Israel (2012-13) and Turkey (2013-14).

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Buffalo Sabres signed No. 2 overall draft pick Sam Reinhart to a three-year contract on Saturday.

The Sabres also signed forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas to a one-year entry-level contract.

Reinhart, an 18-year-old forward, spent the past four seasons with the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League. In 203 WHL games, he had 101 goals and 254 points. Last season, Reinhart was named WHL Player of the Year and Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year after tying Edmonton Oilers prospect Leon Draisaitl, the No. 3 overall draft pick, for fourth in the league with 105 points.

Samuels-Thomas, 24, was selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the seventh round of the 2009 draft. The Sabres acquired his rights last Wednesday from the Winnipeg Jets in a trade for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2015 draft.

---The Minnesota Wild signed forward Jordan Schroeder to a two-year contract and defenseman Jonathon Blum to a one-year deal on Friday.

Financial terms were not released by the team. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that both deals are two-way contracts.

Schroeder, 23, had three goals and three assists in 25 games with the Vancouver Canucks last season. In 56 career NHL games, he has six goals and nine assists. He also has 47 goals and 115 points in 192 AHL games with the Manitoba Moose and Chicago Wolves. He was the No. 22 overall pick in the 2009 draft by the Canucks out of the University of Minnesota.

Blum, 25, had one assist in 15 games with the Wild last season. He also had seven goals and 29 points in 54 AHL games with Iowa. In 106 NHL games, he has seven goals and 23 points. He was the No. 23 overall pick in the 2007 draft by the Nashville Predators.
