    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Rough night for thumbs in the NL Central; Yadier Molina/Brandon Phillips both left their games Wednesday with sprained thumbs.

-- Cincinnati is 15-3 when Alfredo Simon starts, 34-39 when he doesn't.

-- Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) is on the DL, very bad news in the Bronx.

-- Red Sox are going young; they dumped catcher AJ Pierzynski Wednesday, and brought up youngster Christian Vazquez from the minors.

-- White Sox led 4-0 in 8th inning in Boston; took Chris Sale out after 107 pitches, then the bullpen imploded and they lost 5-4 in Fenway. Bitter loss.

-- Brewers lost eight of last ten games; their NL Central lead is down to 2 games.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) If major league ballplayers took a secret ballot vote (with no union pressure) on whether to keep/dump the DH, I don’t think it would stay. There are 25 players on a baseball team, 30 teams=750 players, 360 of which are pitchers, since teams generally carry 12 pitchers these days. Would any of the 360 pitchers vote for the DH, and if so, why? So you’re starting out with the DH down 360-0, meaning only 31 of 390 position players would have to vote against the DH to eliminate it.

    12) To appease the union after the DH was eliminated, rosters should go to 27 guys, so 60 new jobs (albeit lower-paying ones) are created.

This is a fair compromise. Baseball is a more interesting game without the DH and I root for an American League team.

    11) Wonder if MLB will move the All-Star Game to Wednesday to allow more pitchers who throw in the previous Sunday’s games to participate in the ASG? Then they could have Home Run Derby on Tuesday; think that would work better.

    10) Baylor Bears open a new football stadium this season, and they’re putting a statue of RGIII in front of it, seeing as his team’s play spurred the donations that got the stadium built. He is the best football player in Baylor history, but I’m thinking unless you died fighting in a war, no one should have a statue before they turn 35. You can’t even be President of the US until you’re 35.

    9) Sounds like a Jake Peavy-to-St Louis trade is imminent, as Cardinals need rotation help and Peavy needs to get away from Fenway and the DH.

    8) Three overrated things: Niagara Falls-winter-broccoli.

Niagara Falls is just a lot of water over a bunch of rocks, winter is generally awful (I’ve lived in upstate NY my whole life, trust me on this) and I’m convinced that broccoli really isn’t even a food, just a plant that people eat.

    7) Miami Heat signed free agents Josh McRoberts and Danny Granger this week; if Lebron James leaves Miami, those two signed on to be captains on the NBA’s version of the SS Minnow. If Lebron stays, then they can hug their agents.

    6) Kelvin Sampson is the new hoop coach at Houston; he’s brought in eight new players, seven of which are JC kids or transfers, same recipe Fred Hoiberg used to get the Iowa State program jumpstarted. Prediction: Sampson will win big at Houston, which is a city rich with high school hoop talent.

    5) The 2016 Republican National Convention is being held in Cleveland; no word yet on whether Johnny Manziel will deliver the keynote address.

    4) There is a Home Run Derby at the AAA All-Star Game in Durham next week; the winner will get a championship belt, much like they have in boxing or wrestling. Very cool idea; major leagues should go that route.

    3) 7-foot-5 Sim Bhullar is trying out for a spot on the Sacramento Kings’ summer league team; kid played two years at New Mexico State, is surprisingly nimble for his size, has pretty good hands, I think he’ll make an NBA roster somewhere.

    2) Good early morning golf the next four days on the Golf Channel; the Scottish Open, which probably has a better field than the John Deere/Quad Cities tournament in Iowa this weekend. It’s a prelude to next week’s British Open.

    1) Not a fan of the All-Star Game uniforms; like it when the players wear their team uniforms instead. Put it this way; I know damn well Cespedes and Donaldson will be wearing colors other than green and gold soon enough; I’d rather see them wearing the A’s colors while they represent Oakland in the All-Star Game.

Independents college football betting preview: Golson golden for Notre Dame?

It’s not hard to predict where the four FBS independents will end up at the conclusion of the regular season. Three look like a lock for bowl berths, albeit none of the four-team playoff variety. The other looks like it will once again finish nowhere near bowl contention. Either way, it should be an interesting year with both new and familiar faces amongst the quartet.

Army Black Knights (2013: 3-9 SU, 4-8 ATS)

      Season win total: 3.5

Why bet the Black Knights: New head coach Jeff Monken hopes to cure what has ailed Army for almost two decades. In four years at Georgia Southern, Monken didn’t know a losing season. On three of those four occasions, his program reached double-digits in the win column. He brings with him the triple-option offense, which he learned at GSU under Paul Johnson. Monken will have a pair of impressive backfield runners in Terry Baggett and Larry Dixon to implement his system. At receiver, the talented Xavier Moss caught 35 passes for 463 yards last season. And no, Monken is not afraid to air it out every once in a while.

Why not bet the Black Knights: Army went 7-6 in 2010 for its only winning season since 1996. It has won a grand total of eight games the past three years and in 13 of its last 16 campaigns it has won no more than three games. A dreadful defense in 2013 gave up at least 21 points in all nine of the Black Knights’ losses, including at least 33 points in seven of the nine. The coaching regime changed, which should be a good thing in the long run but does not bode well for the immediate future as the program looks to establish a new identity.

Season win total pick: Under 3.5

Brigham Young Cougars (2013: 8-5 SU, 5-7-1 ATS)

      Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Cougars: BYU has posted eight straight winning seasons and hasn’t had a single losing record since Bronco Mendenhall took over in 2005. The Cougars’ running attack should be lethal this year. They return all five starters on the offensive line, quarterback Taysom Hill is one of the nation’s most dangerous dual threats, and running back Jamal Williams is coming off a 2013 campaign in which he rushed for 1,202 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 5.9 yards per carry.

Why not bet the Cougars: Their experienced backfield notwithstanding, the Cougars have some rebuilding - or reloading - to do. The top three wide receivers from 2013, including all-time leading receiver Cody Hoffman, graduated. Mitch Mathews (23 catches, 397 yards) is their top returnee in that department. On the defensive side of the ball, BYU lost starting linebackers Uani Unga, Tyler Beck and second-round NFL Draft pick Kyle Van Noy. As for the schedule, the Cougars will pay visits to Texas, Central Florida, Boise State, and California.

Season win total pick: Under 8.5

      Navy Midshipmen (2013: 9-4 SU, 10-3 ATS)

      Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Midshipmen: Navy has been one of the most consistent programs in college football, with 10 winning seasons in its last 11 campaigns and borderline domination of its fellow service academies during this stretch. The team’s triple-option offense racked up 33.5 points and 411.3 yards per game last year and returns most of its key pieces, including quarterback Keenan Reynolds. A rising junior, Reynolds is well on his way to becoming one of Navy’s greats. This is the Midshipmen’s final season as independents before moving to the American Athletic Conference in 2015. They will want to send a message to their new foes before joining the fray.

Why not bet the Midshipmen: Although Navy likes to keep the ball on the ground, losing its two best receivers from the 2013 squad doesn’t help. The team’s top two tacklers also graduated, leaving a doubly large void at middle linebacker. A tough early schedule will see the Midshipmen face Ohio State before visiting Temple, so a slow start record wise is a real possibility. They also host Notre Dame and go on the road to meet Air Force.

Season win total pick: Over 8.5

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (2013: 9-4 SU, 5-7-1 ATS)

Season win total: 9.5 (over +160, under -210)

Why bet the Irish: Brian Kelly has won at least eight games in all four of his seasons at Notre Dame and he has exceeded that mark in each of the last two (12 in 2012, nine in 2013). Everett Golson, who led the Irish to the BCS National Championship Game two years ago, is back from academic suspension to replace Tommy Rees. Notre Dame also has highly-touted freshman Malik Zaire at its disposal in case Golson falters either on or off the field. The Irish don’t play a road game until October 18, so they should be able to get off to a fast start and build some confidence.

Why not bet the Irish: Golson is a year removed from competition and Zaire is obviously unproven at the college level. Even so, quarterback is nowhere near Notre Dame’s biggest question mark. The team will have to overcome a plethora of big losses. In addition to Rees, defensive tackles Louis Nix III and Stephon Tuitt, offensive linemen Zack Martin, inside linebacker Carlo Calabrese, and tight end Troy Niklas -to name just some - are all gone. The Irish once again have a tough schedule with few “gimme” games. Among the tests are vs. Michigan, Stanford, North Carolina, and Louisville, and at Florida State, Navy, and Southern Cal.

Season win total pick: Under 9.5

What trend continues to roll on the diamond?

Another day on the diamond and another successful day for underdogs against the runline.

Underdogs put up an 1-4 record against the runline in Wednesday's Major League Baseball action, good for a success rate of almost 74 percent.

Dogs against the runline continue to be a solid bet this season, hitting just over 60 percent of the time.

                Yankees' Carlos Beltran, questionable Thursday

Beltran was expected to return on Wednesday after missing the last two games with swelling in his right knee. However he did not return after been hit in the face by a ball during batting practice and is questionable for Thursday against the Indians.

Jays' Lind out 6-8 weeks with broken foot

The Toronto Blue Jays are losing designated hitter-first baseman Adam Lind for six to eight weeks with a broken bone in his right foot.

Lind had an MRI on Tuesday that detected a non-displaced fracture. The foot had bothered Lind this month and he thought it might be a bruise.

"My mom wanted me to get an MRI -- which I hadn't had yet -- because it wasn't getting any better,” Lind said after the Blue Jays' 8-7 loss to the Angels on Wednesday. "So I asked for an MRI and it showed up."

The 30-year-old Lind is batting .320 with four home runs and 27 RBIs in 61 games this season.

The Blue Jays likely will move right fielder Jose Bautista to first base and use Nolan Reimold in right field and as a DH until Lind returns from the injury.

Lind joins teammates Edward Encarnacion and Brett Lawrie on the disabled list.

Case in point: eight of the Tribe's last nine games against right-handers at Progressive Field have gone over the total. Under scorching hot between these two clubs

When the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers meet, low totals tend to follow. In their last 11 matchups, the Under is a sizzling 10-1. The Padres face off against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium Thursday evening.

The Dodgers are currently heavy -248 faves with a total of just six.

Angels favorites, but ice cold in Texas

Global Life Park in Arlington has not been friendly territory for the Los Angeles Angels as of late. The Halos have dropped 10 out of their last 11 games against the Rangers in Texas. The two clubs will renew acquaintances in The Lone Star State Thursday.
