    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Braves quietly won their last nine games, lead NL East by 1.5 games.

-- Victor Martinez (back) might not play again until after the All-Star break.

-- Edwin Encarnacion was helped off field with an injured quad Saturday.

-- Ryan Braun left Saturday's game with back spasms.

-- Clayton Kershaw's scoreless streak is now at 36 innings.

-- Three of the best four records in the AL are teams from the AL West.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) Some leftover stuff from A's-Cubs trade; Chicago saves $5.5M in salary when Oakland takes on the two big league contracts; some Cub fans on Twitter are upset the team folded its tent on this year and next when they were only 7.5 games out of a Wild Card spot-- they had won 11 of last 19 games, six of seven on the road, but they got waxed 13-0 by Washington in the first post-trade game.

    12) Oakland sent Tommy Milone to AAA, a shocking move considering he has a 6-0, 2.62 record in his last 11 starts. Think its procedural- they might've lost Brad Mills had they sent him down, but sending Jesse Chavez to the bullpen seemed like a more probable outcome. Tough one for Bob Melvin to explain, considering there is no way it was his idea.

    11) Jeff Samardzija is signed thru 2015; Jason Hammel is a free agent this winter, but A's get Parker/Griffin back from injury next year. Oakland has to demote another pitcher when Hammel arrives on Sunday.

    10) Ever watch House on TV? Actor Hugh Laurie's father won a gold medal in the 8-man crew event in 1936 Olympics. KL Wheat sent me that gem of a tidbit.

    9) Toronto's Mark Buehrle has two career no-hitters, and the same umpire was behind the plate for both of them-- Eric Cooper-- he hasn't worked any of Buehrle's games behind the plate this season.

    8) Edwin Encarnacion hurt his quad Saturday; his spot in lineup has come up to bat with the most men on base this season, 276. Miami's Casey McGehee (272) is next, followed by Albert Pujols (270).

    7) Looking at players with 125+ plate appearances, Miguel Cabrera (27%) has knocked in highest percentage of baserunners, followed by Ryan Braun (24.1%) and Robinson Cano (22.8%).

    6) Best wishes to former Baylor guard Pierre Jackson, who tore his achilles tendon down at the Orlando summer league-- thought he had gotten a big break by getting traded to the 76ers, but now he has a long year of rehab ahead of him.

    5) They have the no-foul out rule in Orlando; any personal foul after the 6th is a technical foul on that team. ABA used to have this rule; its a good one.

    4) Bahamas won the Caribbean basketball championship this weekend, which I'm mentioning only because Larry Eustachy is the Bahamas coach. ESPN did their top 50 coaches thing, then mentioned another 25 guys who just missed the list, and Eustachy still wasn't mentioned, which is poppycock. He is a terrific coach who has battled personal problems, but if I'm a college AD, I'd be glad to have him as coach.

    3) Toronto dumped the rest of Steve Novak's contract ($7.5M, two years) on Utah; they never used Novak, who can shoot but do very little else. Boy can he shoot, but Toronto is actually good now and needed that $7.5M to pay someone else.

    2) Rangers' Adrian Beltre has now homered in 40 major league ballparks, most of any active player.

    1) Thru Friday night, there had been 547 instant replay reviews this season, with about 50% resulting in overturned calls. This system has worked out better than most thought it would-- I'm guessing the powers-that-be are pleasantly surprised.

AAC college football betting preview: Big difference between top and bottom

The American Athletic Conference goes through a shakeup in its second season. The cream of the crop should separate itself fairly early in the campaign with some true bottom-feeders in the mix.

Covers Expert Sean Murphy looks at all 11 AAC teams and give season win total picks for each heading into the 2014 campaign.

Central Florida Knights (2013: 12-1 SU, 8-5 ATS)

      Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Knights: This is where depth pays off. Yes, the Knights lose significant talent from last year's squad, including QB Blake Bortles. But the cupboard is by no means bare. George O'Leary has built this program to last, and the Knights should find themselves at the top of the AAC heap if everything goes according to plan in 2014.

Why not bet the Knights: After a dominant 2013 campaign, the Knights are on virtually every bettor's radar and that could mean they take a hit in the value department this season. In addition to Bortles departure, UCF loses a 1,100-yard rusher and three all-conference offensive linemen.

Season win total pick: Over 8.5

      Cincinnati Bearcats (2013: 9-4 SU, 6-7 ATS)

      Season win total: 7.5

Why bet the Bearcats: After getting off to a miserable start in 2013, the Bearcats will be eager to start on the right foot this year. The schedule should allow for that with three of their first four games coming at home, against beatable opponents (the lone road game comes at Ohio State). Expectations aren't all that high this year and that could be a good thing.

Why not bet the Bearcats: The quarterback position remains a big question mark and that's certainly not a positive. Gunner Kiel appears likely to take over the reins, but how the Notre Dame transfer will fit in this offense remains to be seen. Cincy's defense held up well a year ago, but that had a lot to do with its rather weak schedule.

Season win total pick: Over 7.5

      Connecticut Huskies (2013: 3-9 SU, 5-7 ATS)

      Season win total: 3.5

Why bet the Huskies: The Paul Pasqualoni era is fading in the rear-view mirror in Storrs. Forty-one year old Bob Diaco takes over the team and things can only get better, right? After finishing last season on a high note, and with plenty of returning talent, the Huskies could make some noise - provided they can catch a few breaks here in 2014.

Why not bet the Huskies: Experience isn't everything. This was a bad football team a year ago, so it remains to be seen whether the right pieces are in place. The defense looks good on paper but can it hold up if the offense isn't able to consistently sustain drives?

Season win total pick: Over 3.5

      Houston Cougars (2013: 8-5 SU, 10-3 ATS)

      Season win total: 8.5

Why bet the Cougars: Houston is loaded with playmakers all over the field and with QB John O'Korn back in the fold after an encouraging 2013 campaign, the sky is the limit for this team offensively. The defense is loaded with returnees that are comfortable with the 4-3 scheme that will once again be employed.

Why not bet the Cougars: Simply put, the Cougars were one of the best bets in the entire nation last year - a feat that teams are rarely able to repeat. The betting marketplace will likely catch up with Houston in 2014. Will the offense be able to mix things up enough to keep defenses honest?

Season win total pick: Under 8.5

Tulane Green Wave (2013: 7-6 SU, 9-4 ATS)

      Season win total: 3.5

Why bet the Green Wave: Tulane suddenly has a little momentum in its corner after reaching a bowl game last season. Head coach Curtis Johnson has turned this program around and will have his players believing that last year was no fluke.

Why not bet the Green Wave: Losing WR Ryan Grant hurts immensely. Not only is Grant gone, but there's no sure thing at quarterback. Defensively, the Green Wave always seem to be facing an uphill battle and 2014 should be no different.

Season win total pick: Under 3.5

      Memphis Tigers (2013: 3-9 SU, 6-6 ATS)

      Season win total: 5.5

Why bet the Tigers: The rebuild continues in Memphis. While it wasn't apparent on paper, the Tigers did make some positive gains in 2013, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. With a wealth of returning talent, the potential is there for Memphis to lean even more on that defense this year.

Why not bet the Tigers: There are too many question marks on offense, not just at the quarterback position, but all over the field. Maybe this is the year we start to see progress. But I believe too much is going to be asked of the Tigers ground game and they simply don't have the horses to thrive in that regard.

Season win total pick: Under 5.5

East Carolina Pirates (2013: 10-3 SU, 7-6 ATS)

      Season win total: 7.5

Why bet the Pirates: For those that have followed this program in recent years, it should come as no surprise that the offense will once again pave the way to any success. The duo of QB Shane Carden and WR Justin Hardy will be one to watch throughout the 2014 campaign.

Why not bet the Pirates: A defense that is bad at the best of times could be even worse in 2014, with only four returning starters. It’s one thing to survive on offense alone in Conference-USA, but doing so in the AAC might be a little tougher. Off a 10-win season, the Pirates won't be flying under the radar.

Season win total pick: Over 7.5

South Florida Bulls (2013: 2-10 SU, 5-7 ATS)

      Season win total: 5

Why bet the Bulls: Don't be fooled by last year's poor record, this is a program that is headed in the right direction under the guidance of Willie Taggart. The Bulls played their best football near the end of last season and have a roster loaded with players ready to take a big leap forward in 2014.

Why not bet the Bulls: USF is probably still a year or two away from contending for a bowl. Mike White will likely be the man for the job under center and, while he showed flashes of brilliance a year ago, he's not the type of quarterback that can carry a team.

Season win total pick: Over 5

      SMU Mustangs (2013: 5-7 SU, 6-6 ATS)

      Season win total: 4

Why bet the Mustangs: After a truly mediocre 2013 campaign, the Mustangs aren't going to grab much attention from bettors, and that's not a bad thing. June Jones has the personnel in place to get the offense humming again, even with the departure of QB Garrett Gilbert.

Why not bet the Mustangs: SMU's schedule can't get much tougher, opening with back-to-back road games and closing with two of three away from home. The Mustangs first two home games will come against Texas A&M and TCU. They're at least a year away from a breakout campaign.

Season win total pick: Over 4

      Temple Owls (2013: 2-10 SU, 8-4 ATS)

      Season win total: 2.5

Why bet the Owls: Quarterback P.J. Walker will only get better after showing plenty of potential in 2013. His receiving corps should be improved while the run game will remain the strength of this offense. As bad as the Owls were a year ago, they still posted a solid ATS record and a similar storyline could unfold this season.

Why not bet the Owls: I hate to oversimplify things, but the bottom line is that the Owls aren’t going to win many games. If you like hoping and praying for backdoor covers, by all means, get behind the Owls. But expectations are low for a reason again this year.

Season win total pick: Under 2.5

Tulsa Golden Hurricane (2013: 3-9 SU, 3-9 ATS)

      Season win total: 5.5

Why bet the Hurricane: The defense. It's hard to believe, but this program has no choice but to hang its hat on its defense - the polar opposite of what we've been accustomed to seeing from the Golden Hurricane. After a down season, improvement should be in order with the pedigree for success firmly in place in Tulsa.

Why not bet the Hurricane: The offense. After going through some serious growing pains in 2013, there's no reason to expect an immediate rebound in 2014. Losing three offensive linemen and two running backs will further stall the progress of this unit and ultimately keep the Hurricane from breaking through.

Season win total pick: Under 5.5

                Sunday, July 6

Blue Jays' starter scorching hot on the road

Drew Hutchison has been dominant for the Blue Jays on the road this season. In Hutchison's last six road starts the Jays are 5-1 and bettors have cashed in on the under five times.

Hutchison has only surrendered 10 runs over those six games and has kept the other team scoreless three times.

Royals shakey at best against Indians pitcher

The Kansas City Royals will be staring down Corey Kluber Sunday, which does not bode well for them. The Royals are 1-5 in their last six games against the Cleveland Indians when Kluber starts.

The Royals have whiffed an average of six times per game, including a dominant 11 K performance by Kluber earlier this season.

                Little-known pitcher strong against Astros

The Los Angeles Angels will be sending Garrett Richards to the mound against the Houston Astros Sunday. The 'Halos' are 4-1 in Richards last against the Astros.

Richards has supplied a bend don't break method giving up double-digit hits twice in that span, but has allowed less than three runs per game.

Young lefty pitching well for Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates can often go unnoticed after years of terrible baseball, but pitcher Jeff Locke should not be ignored. The Pirates have won Locke's last four starts with the young lefty never allowing more than three runs.

Rain pushes Coke Zero 400 to Sunday start

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series lost to Mother Nature on Saturday night when rain forced postponement of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway until 11 a.m. ET Sunday.

Prerace activities are scheduled for 10:45 a.m. The green flag originally was scheduled to drop at 7:57 p.m. Saturday.

NASCAR made repeated attempts to dry the track surface to get the race in later Saturday night, but rain continued to fall, negating progress made by track drying equipment. The call was finally made by NASCAR officials to end track drying attempts when local weather radar at 9 p.m. showed rain continuing throughout the night.

The Coke Zero 400 is the second race of the season at Daytona for the Sprint Cup Series, with the first being the season-opening Daytona 500 on Feb. 23. The Daytona 500 was also delayed by rain but completed on the scheduled day in the evening rather than the afternoon. That race was won by Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Jimmie Johnson is the defending winner of the Coke Zero 400. He swept both races a year ago at the track.

When the Coke Zero takes the green flag on Sunday, David Gilliland will start the race from the pole, with Reed Sorenson alongside on the front row. Gilliland claimed the pole during a qualifying session on Friday that was shortened by rain.

Because of rain washing the rubber laid down on the track during the weekend, a competition caution will be expected around lap 20 of the race.

Landon Cassill and Bobby Labonte will start the race in the second row. It'll be the first race for Labonte since the Daytona 500.

Johnson, the defending champion, will start fifth and Earnhardt seventh.

Rain also affected the NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule at Daytona on Friday, shortening the qualifying session and delaying the start of the race by about 1 1/2 hours.

Brian France gives midseason state of the sport at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- If NASCAR CEO Brian France could change one thing about 2014 it might be the lousy weather that has haunted the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule.

With it raining again at Daytona hours before the scheduled start of the Coke Zero 400, France addressed the national media for the first time since the implementation of the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying format and rules package. He said the sport is pleased with the results despite its share of challenges.

"I think we can all see the benefits of changing the importance of winning (races)," France said. "It has changed the racing on the track. The drivers are telling us that. They're taking different kinds of chances. They're going for wins when they would have played it safe, otherwise.

"I think that (competition) is just going to get more intense as we close in on Richmond and set the (Chase) field there."

France predicted that the new format for crowning a champion, in which four drivers will vie for the title in the final race of the season, will also be a major positive.

"We didn't want to have a bad race or two take somebody out early on in the Chase," he said.

France conceded that there are still tweaks to be made, notably with the revised rules package for 2014.

"We're not where we want to be on that," he said, "and we're embarking on a lot of work -- a lot of science, technology and innovation -- to get the very best racing product that we can on all of the tracks. That's obviously a fundamental goal and responsibility at NASCAR."

Nasty weather and going head-to-head with Olympic and World Cup coverage have been among the challenges in 2014 as NASCAR has dealt with up-and-down TV ratings and less-than-capacity crowds at some venues.

"Some markets are doing better than they did last year, so it's a mixed bag," France said. "There are some markets that have had a lot of pressure and Dover is one of those.

"But when you go around and really look at it and all the digital interests that we have today on devices -- and that's obviously not scored currently -- we're real pleased. When you combine it all up, even with our challenges, we're still not off that much. We're never pleased when our ratings aren't growing at the rate we would like, but we understand that circumstances will always have us going one way or the other from time to time."

Overall, France said he is pleased with the economic state of the sport.

"We're on a nice, steady ground and sponsorship is coming back for us, thankfully," he said. "The business is sound and we're going forward."

France said the sport is already looking ahead to 2015, when NBC and FOX will share a new television contract and a new sponsor for the NASCAR Nationwide Series is expected to come on board.

"I think in the coming weeks we'll be getting to the end of that (sponsorship) process and we will be in very good shape when the dust settles," France said.

Speaking at Daytona International Speedway, where the $400 million-plus Daytona Rising renovation project is in full swing, France said he wouldn't be surprised if other venues follow suit to attract fans.

Noting that Daytona is where NASCAR kicks off its season, France said that facility "needs to be a spectacular place to come for our fans."

Adding new seating options, escalators and social media zones in the manner of Daytona might not make sense at every NASCAR track. But France speculated that every facility will take note of the updates.

"I think every track has to have its own identity and has to do what it thinks is important in the marketplace they compete in," he said. "Will (Daytona Rising) be something other tracks want to emulate? I think it will."

With the Daytona project being privately financed, France suggested that state and local municipalities would be well-served to help finance similar improvements that attract fans in other markets.

"Unfortunately for our industry, the speedways don't enjoy the public financing component that almost all major sports enjoy," France said. "We're hoping that gets better-balanced over time -- in other words, that communities, local governments, states will help grow these facilities like they do other stadiums and arenas."

France hinted of more changes ahead for the sport, noting that future rules, such as new engine specifications, must be "relevant," not only to current manufacturers but to manufacturers who might consider entering the NASCAR arena.

He also said NASCAR remains cognizant of lowering the cost of racing so it does not present a barrier for new teams to enter the sport or prevent smaller teams from competing effectively.

"Lowering the cost of racing, getting parity where teams can come in and have success, and making ourselves more relevant to manufacturers and partners is all part of the NASCAR business model," he said.

France predicted "robust discussion" about possible schedule changes for the 2015 season and beyond. Though not specifically addressing a FOX Sports report that Darlington Raceway could host the second race of the season, France said that weather concerns, a new television partner and the new Chase format are reasons to consider shifting some races to new dates.

"We'll be releasing that (2015 schedule) in September," France said.

One thing France does not envision changing is the site of NASCAR's title-determining venue, Homestead-Miami Speedway.

"Historically, we've liked to do it in South Florida," he said. "The weather is great that time of year. It's a good market for us and the track -- and this is an important thing -- is by any definition the best mile-and-a-half track that the drivers believe they have. They can really race hard and compete hard and that matters. When you factor all of those things in, we're going to be in Homestead for the foreseeable future."

Game of the Day: Rays at Tigers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers (+105, 7.5)

Logan Forsythe was struggling much like his Tampa Bay Rays in mid-June, batting .178 and spending plenty of time watching from the bench. Forsythe has batted .431 since then to help ignite the Rays, who look to finish their 11-game road trip with nine victories when they visit the Detroit Tigers on Sunday night. Runs will be hard to come by as Detroit’s Rick Porcello, coming off the first two shutouts of his career, takes the mound against David Price -- the major-league strikeout leader.

The Rays have taken two of three in the series and lost only once in their last eight as Forsythe boasts three homers and eight RBIs on the road trip. The Tigers have dropped the last two after winning 12 of their previous 14 and lead the American League Central while hot-hitting Victor Martinez is day-to-day with a sore back. J.D Martinez is 8-for-19 with two homers and five RBIs in July though for the Tigers.

                    PITCHING MATCHUP:
Rays LH David Price (7-7, 3.50 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Rick Porcello (11-4, 3.12)

After a five-game winless streak, Price has won three of his last four starts while yielding only seven runs over 31 1/3 innings. The Vanderbilt product leads the majors in strikeout-walk ratio (153-17, 9.00), but has surrendered 17 homers – among the most in the majors. Miguel Cabrera is only 1-for-14 with six strikeouts against Price, who is 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA in seven appearances (five starts) versus Detroit.

Before Porcello’s two shutouts, he blanked Cleveland over six innings on six hits in his previous start to begin a three-game winning streak. The 25-year-old New Jersey native has permitted two or fewer runs in 10 of his 16 starts in 2014 and 96 hits in 106 2/3 innings overall. Desmond Jennings is 3-for-10 in his career against Porcello, who is 2-2 in five career starts versus Tamps Bay with a 2.73 ERA.

Game roundup: Belt's blast lifts Giants in 10th
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      SAN DIEGO --
Brandon Belt hit a two-run homer off San Diego reliever Dale Thayer in the 10th inning Saturday night to give the San Francisco Giants a 5-3 victory over the Padres at Petco Park.

Belt, who returned from the disabled list Friday after missing 50 games with a broken thumb, followed a leadoff double by Hunter Pence with a 406-foot line drive into the right field stands on a 2-2 pitch.

The win stopped a three-game skid for the Giants, who were 6-18 in their past 24 games. The Padres had won five straight and are 10-6 in their last 16 games.

                      A's 5, Blue Jays 1

                      OAKLAND, Calif. --
Left-hander Scott Kazmir pitched seven strong innings, Josh Donaldson homered and Oakland defeated Toronto at O.co Coliseum.

The A's beat the Jays for the third straight time and will go for a sweep in their four-game series Sunday afternoon when former Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija makes his Oakland debut. Kazmir (10-3) entered the game with a 5-1 record and 1.61 ERA at the Coliseum and pitched another gem in front of the home fans. He allowed just three hits and one run.

Blue Jays left-hander Mark Buehrle (10-6) lost his fifth straight decision. He gave up three runs and 10 hits in six innings, including Donaldson's solo shot in the third inning and Alberto Callaspo's double in the fourth when the A's scored twice.

                      Angels 11, Astros 5

                      ANAHEIM, Calif. --
Albert Pujols is climbing the home run ladder with each one he delivers. The latest boosted the first baseman another rung and propelled Los Angeles past Houston at Angels Stadium.

The homer was only part of the carnage. The Angels scored eight runs in the seventh inning, which lasted nearly an hour and was highlighted by three home runs.

Pujols now has 19 home runs this season and 511 in his career, which ties him with Mel Ott for 23rd all time.

                      Orioles 7-2, Red Sox 4-3

                      BOSTON --
Nelson Cruz hit his 27th home run of the season as part of a career-high five-hit night that powered Baltimore to a split of the day-night doubleheader.

In the first game, pinch-hitter Jonathan Herrera drove in the winning run on a broken-bat single with one out in the ninth inning to help the Red Sox snap their three-game losing streak.

Nick Hundley hit a two-run homer in the nightcap for the Orioles, who won for the fifth time in six games.

                      Indians 7, Royals 3

                      CLEVELAND --
Michael Bourn homered and rookie left-hander T.J. House pitched into the seventh inning for his first major league win as Cleveland beat Kansas City at Progressive Field.

Bourn's solo home run leading off the third inning ignited a three-run rally and House was steady throughout his eighth appearance and seventh start for the Indians. In 6 2/3 innings, House (1-2) gave up three runs on nine hits, with three strikeouts and no walks.

                      Mariners 3, White Sox 2, 14 innings

                      CHICAGO --
Brad Miller drove in the winning run with a ground-rule double in the top of the 14th inning and Seattle outlasted Chicago at U.S. Cellular Field.

Mariners closer Fernando Rodney shut the door in the bottom of the 14th to give Seattle a split of the first two games of a three-game weekend series.

Miller, hitless in his first five trips to the plate, drove in Michael Saunders with one out in the 14th.

                      Pirates 3, Phillies 2

                      PITTSBURGH --
Edinson Volquez pitched seven strong innings to win his third straight start and Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer to lead Pittsburgh over Philadelphia.

Volquez (7-6) won for the sixth time in his last eight decisions after beginning the season 1-4. The right-hander gave up one run and four hits in seven innings with four walks and five strikeouts in improving to 4-1 with a 1.72 ERA in five career starts against the Phillies.

Jordy Mercer was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk for the Pirates, making him 9-for-14 with four doubles in July. Pittsburgh won for the 12th time in its last 16 games.

                      Marlins 5, Cardinals 4

                      ST. LOUIS --
Miami was down to its final strike on Saturday but still had enough to come back and beat St. Louis.

The Marlins were trailing 5-4 before Casey McGehee capped an 11-pitch at-bat with a single to right to score Donovan Solano from first base to tie it, and McGehee later scored on a pinch-single by Jeff Baker.

The Marlins claimed their 15th comeback victory this season but their first when trailing after eight innings. They had been 0-38 in those situations before Saturday.

                      Nationals 13, Cubs 0

                      WASHINGTON --
Gio Gonzalez won his third straight start with eight scoreless innings and Ryan Zimmerman had four hits and three RBIs as Washington erupted for six runs in the third inning against Chicago.

The Nationals won for the sixth time in seven games and are a season-high eight games above .500.

Jayson Werth and (three RBIs) and Anthony Rendon (two RBIs, three doubles) banged out three hits and Ian Desmond (two RBIs) and Wilson Ramos added two hits for the Nationals, who smashed out 19 hits, including eight doubles but no homers.

                      Rays 7, Tigers 2

                      DETROIT --
Kevin Kiermaier had two triples to drive in three runs, Logan Forsythe hit a home run and beat out a squeeze bunt for an RBI single and Chris Archer checked Detroit on six hits in 8 1/3 innings to help Tampa Bay hand the Tigers their second straight loss.

Archer (5-5) kept Detroit scoreless until Alex Avila hit his sixth home run of the season, with two outs in the seventh inning.

Archer also made two special defensive plays, spearing a line drive to center hit by Austin Jackson in the eighth and snagging a bullet ground ball by J.D. Martinez to end the sixth. Archer walked four and struck out four in his first complete game this year and third of his career.

                      Braves 10, Diamondbacks 4

                      ATLANTA --
After spotting Arizona three runs in the first inning, Atlanta stormed back to extend their winning streak to nine games.

Justin Upton's two-run homer in the sixth inning broke a stretch of 47 innings without a homer by the Braves and was only their third during the winning streak. Andrelton Simmons, who made two first-inning errors, matched his career high with four RBIs, and Freddie Freeman had a double and triple as part of the Braves' 14-hit attack.

Aaron Harang (8-6) needed 30 pitches as Arizona batted around in the first inning but steadied from there to work eight innings. He allowed nine hits and four runs (three earned).

                      Brewers 1, Reds 0

                      CINCINNATI --
Matt Garza tossed his fourth career complete-game shutout and Aramis Ramirez drove in the lone run with an RBI single in the first inning, lifting Milwaukee over Cincinnati.

The Reds were shut out for the 10th time this season as the Brewers snapped a four-game losing streak.

Garza (6-5) baffled the Reds, allowing just two hits despite entering the game with a 5.45 ERA against them in seven career starts. Reds starter Homer Bailey gave up two hits in the first inning, including Ramirez's two-out RBI single that put Milwaukee ahead 1-0.

                      Twins 2, Yankees 1, 11 innings

                      MINNEAPOLIS --
Backed by a quality start from Yohan Pino and five scoreless innings of relief, Minnesota snapped a seven-game home losing streak to New York.

Josh Willingham scored the winning run on an errant throw in the 11th inning by Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli.

Pino gave the Twins their first quality start of the series, going six innings and allowing one run and three hits and striking out three. It was Pino's first-ever start against the Yankees. The 30-year-old rookie entered the game 0-2 with a 6.32 ERA in three appearances for the Twins.

                      Rockies 8, Dodgers 7

                      DENVER --
Colorado survived a bullpen meltdown and held on to beat Los Angeles and break a five-game losing streak.

Jorge De La Rosa (9-6) allowed three hits and two runs in the first inning but then pitched five hitless innings. He handed the bullpen an 8-2 lead that nearly vanished as the Dodgers erupted for five runs in the seventh. Adam Ottavino snuffed out the rally, helping the Rockies win for just the third in 19 games and end a six-game losing streak against the Dodgers.

Drew Stubbs hit a two-run homer, Corey Dickerson hit a solo shot and Wilin Rosario drove in two runs as the Rockies again tormented Dodgers starter Dan Haren.

                      Rangers 5, Mets 3

                      NEW YORK --
Robinson Chirinos hit a three-run homer in the first inning and right-hander Colby Lewis gutted through six innings as Texas snapped two losing streaks.

The Rangers ended a six-game losing streak as well as a 10-game road losing streak dating to June 17. It was their longest road losing streak since a franchise-record 12-game skid in 2003.

Chirinos had two hits. Adrian Beltre homered and Alex Rios was 3-for-4 with an RBI double.

Lewis (6-5) dodged trouble most of the night and allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits.

Red Sox cold for bettors with Peavy starting

It certainly hasn't been a banner first half of the season for the Boston Red Sox, but the AL East club has been ice cold for bettors when Jake Peavy gets the start.

The righty is an abysmal 1-7 on the season and the Red Sox have dropped six-straight ball games that he's started.

He'll get the start versus the Baltimore Orioles Sunday afternoon. The Sox are currently -110 home faves with a total of 9.

Edwin Encarnacion, Toronto - Ques Sun

Encarnacion left Saturday's game with an apparent leg injury and is questionable to play Sunday against the Athletics.
