    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Knicks offered Carmelo Anthony the maximum amount, so much for him taking less to help the ballclub win. No chance.

-- Cal Bears' center Kameron Rooks tore his ACL, will miss next season.

-- Bad news for CC Sabathia's ailing knee; it flared up Thursday, he may have to have microfracture surgery.

-- Chris Kaman signs on for two years, $9.8M with the Trailblazers.

-- Grambling hired a new school president, who quickly fired the AD and the hoop coach, a week before the July recruiting period. Not very good timing.

-- College of Charleston hoop coach Doug Wojcik is in hot water for verbally thrashing his team; looks like he won't be keeping his job. Wojcik was a teammate of David Robinson at the Naval Academy.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Happy 4th of July, everyone.........

    13) The first Milwaukee-Brooklyn game has to be nationally televised next fall, right? Jason Kidd against the team he stabbed in the back? Would TNT or ESPN put the Bucks on national TV? Do either of the networks know they’re in the league?

    12) I was told a while back Kurt Rambis will be Derek Fisher’s top assistant with the Knicks; he got offered $4.8M for four years in New York, which should raise at least one of Carmelo Anthony’s eyebrows, since Phil Jackson suggested he take a pay cut, while an assistant coach banks $1.2M a year.

    11) Kobe Bryant is going to sit in on the Laker’s meetings with Anthony; his whole recruitment makes me want to puke, Anthony isn’t at the James/Durant level of elite player, but you know he thinks he is. 11 years in the NBA, his teams have won 23 playoff games; ‘nuff said.

    10) Darren Collison signed for three years in Sacramento, $15M, all totally guaranteed; is this a great country or what?

    9) Guess I’m never going to find out about the Russell Wilson/Tom O’Brien rift at NC State that led to Wilson being allowed to transfer to Wisconsin for his senior year, without having to sit out a season. Wilson has since won a Super Bowl, O’Brien got canned at NC State and is now an assistant at Virginia. ESPN never did anything on it, but it sure as hell sounds like an interesting story.

    8) Sean Payton testified for the Saints in the Jimmy Graham/position situation, which saved the Saints $5M when it was ruled he is a tight end and not a wide receiver. Going forward, will that make things awkward between the two?

    7) ESPN named Billy Donovan its #1 college basketball coach, John Calipari #2; wonder who is starting up the SEC Network this summer?

    6) Red Sox TV announcers Don Orsillo/Jerry Remy got me laughing Wednesday night; Remy lost a tooth while on the air, so it became a gag throughout the game, with Orsillo being handed a tool kit and pretending to put Remy’s tooth back in with pliers and a hammer. Boston is having a lousy season; good thing those two still have their sense of humor.

    5) Former A’s pitcher Mark Mulder finally saw Moneyball for the first time this week; he live-tweeted during it, refuting some of the little details (players didn’t pay for soda) but basically saying he liked the movie.

I was in Fenway Park on a date the night in 2003 when Mulder suffered a stress fracture of his hip and went on the DL; didn’t impress my companion when I started cursing under my breath because Chad Harville was warming up in the 3rd inning—I knew it had to be an injury and it was a serious one.

    4) As you know if you’re a regular reader, I’m a big A’s fan, and would like them to get more recognition for their fine play, but fact of the matter is that I’d just as soon they all got four days off instead of trucking to Minnesota for the All-Star festivities. Baseball season is a six-day grind; a four-day break can be refreshing.

    3) This is how good Adam Wainwright has been this year; in six of his starts, St Louis scored 3 or less runs- they’re 4-2 in those games.

    2) Atlanta Braves won their last nine games that were decided by 1 or 2 runs- they’ve got couple of extra inning losses in there that were decided by 3+ runs, but they’ve been very good in tight games, which is why they’re near the top in the NL East.

    1) I’m tired of reading about total run differential as being an important stat; think it is totally overrated and that’s with the A’s having the best one.

Only stat that truly matters is wins and losses—now how much you win individual games by matters as an indicator, but not the cumulative total.

Oakland pounds on lousy pitchers, which is why their run differential is so good. Its something mainstream media has jumped on the bandwagon of- they’re beating it to death. Too bad.

Wild card Daytona anyone's race to win

Daytona. Sonoma. Talladega. Watkins Glen. Those four tracks, scattered across the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular-season schedule, offer a unique opportunity under the new "win-and-in" rules for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

They're all wild cards, with an almost unending list of potential winners.

That theory especially holds true at Daytona and Talladega -- the series' two restrictor plate superspeedways -- which boast an abundance of surprise winners (Trevor Bayne and David Ragan).

Tony Stewart explains, as the series heads to Daytona for the Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola (Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT).

"Someone described racing on the superspeedways as being a combination of a science project and the luck of a casino, and it's exactly that way," Stewart said. "You do everything in your power to take care of the science or technology side. You do everything you can to build the fastest car. If you don't have the luck to go with it -- even if you don't have any drama with getting the car touched, nothing happens to the car -- if you're just in the wrong spot at the wrong time, it can take you out of the opportunity to take the best race car in the field and win."

Right place, right time. That's how Bayne won the 2011 Daytona 500. And how David Ragan nabbed the July Daytona victory a few months later.

This year, maybe more than any, it's exponentially more important to be in the right place at the right time. It will likely mean a spot in NASCAR's playoffs.

A win could belong to Ragan -- a winner at both Daytona and Talladega -- come Saturday night.

"It's been good to me over the years," Ragan said. "I go with an open attitude. I know that anything can happen. I know that you can get in a wreck early of someone else's making. But I also know that if you play your cards right and you have a good strategy, you have a shot to win."

Sadler bumps JRM boys from top spot, looks for more

It's been a long time coming, but Elliott Sadler is back on top.

Sadler took the NASCAR Nationwide Series points lead last weekend at Kentucky, catapulting to the top of the standings for the first time since the fall of 2012 at Phoenix International Raceway.

And now, he looks to pad that cushion, a difficult feat considering the site of the Friday night's Subway Firecracker 250 -- Daytona International Speedway (7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2).

"Racing at Daytona is always a wild ride," Sadler said. "It really is a wild card track. Some drivers like to be in the back and avoid the early wrecks. While others think if you're up front, all the wrecks will happen behind you. Regardless, Daytona and Talladega are the two tracks which one little wrong move can take out half of the field. Earlier this year we had a fast car and battled in the top three spots for the majority of the race.

"Unfortunately with a few laps remaining, our car was shuffled back and we ended up finishing fifth. Fifth isn't a bad way to start the year, but it's frustrating when you know your car is faster than a fifth-place finish. On the positive note, we can use all our notes from the first race of the season and prepare a fast car for this upcoming weekend. I'm ready to throttle down and hopefully bring home the checkered at DIS to add to our win earlier this season at Talladega."

This is the first time someone outside the JR Motorsports camp has held the points lead; JRM teammates of Regan Smith and Chase Elliott have swapped the top spot over the course of the first 14 races. Now, Joe Gibbs Racing's Sadler is in command; four points ahead of Elliott and eight points ahead of Smith.

Statistically speaking, Sadler could very well expand on that lead this weekend. Not only does he have a win at a restrictor plate track this year (Talladega), but of the top three drivers in points, he has the best pre-race driver rating (98.6) and average finish (13.3) at Daytona.

Earnhardt sets sights on sweep at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a chance to do something this weekend that only one driver in the previous 32 years accomplished.

That's sweep both NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at Daytona International Speedway. The last driver to win both Daytona races happens to be Earnhardt's Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jimmie Johnson, who accomplished the feat last year.

"That stat went 30 (plus) years for a reason," said Johnson, whose Daytona double was the first since Bobby Allison in 1982 and just the fifth in history (Fireball Roberts 1962, Cale Yarborough 1968 and LeeRoy Yarbrough 1969). "It's not easy because, in (restrictor) plate racing, anything can happen."

As unpredictable as racing at Daytona can be, one factor Earnhardt has going for him is his consistency this season under any and all circumstances. In fact, he's riding a string of five consecutive top-10 finishes, including his victory at Pocono Raceway and a fifth last week at Kentucky Speedway.

"I'm just thrilled with the way the team is competing," Earnhardt said before Thursday's practice at Daytona. "We have been doing some great work since the beginning of the Chase last year -- maybe even a little before that. If you look at the graph, going back to 2011 when Steve (crew chief Letarte) and I got together, our performance has been a linear trajectory improvement.

"It's as good as I have ever run at Hendrick and maybe even at DEI. I remember when we put together a couple of top-15s a couple weeks in a row. Then it became a couple of top-10s. Then, man, if we ran in the top five a couple of times we were really doing it.

"Our progression makes sense to me, but at the same time, it really surprises me that the team has been able to sustain it. That has been the tough part for me over my career -- to sustain momentum."

That momentum includes 12 top-10 finishes in the first 17 races and has him in a points tie for second with Johnson in the Cup standings, 24 points behind another Hendrick driver, Jeff Gordon.

Earnhardt concedes that winning the Daytona 500 is a slightly bigger deal than winning the July event at Daytona.

"But winning here, regardless, it's a great feeling," he said. "So you are going to try your guts out.

"I would love to sweep the races at Daytona because that is a cool thing, but I just love winning here. To go to victory lane, regardless of what we did in February, would mean a lot to me."

Johnson says it might be even bigger for the sport.

"An Earnhardt winning in Daytona is huge, period," Johnson said. "It would be meaningful and impactful for everybody involved. If I don't have a chance to win the race, I wouldn't mind if he did.

"He's going to be fast. He's going to be strong and have a very good opportunity to win. If he can make it to the white flag lap (in contention), he will definitely be a threat."

With two victories this season all but assuring his place in the Chase, Earnhardt says he and Letarte plan to be aggressive in terms of pit strategy on Saturday night.

"We did it perfectly for the (Daytona) 500 and we were in position at Talladega to gamble and make it work like several guys did," said Earnhardt, who led 26 laps at Talladega but played it conservatively on fuel, got trapped in traffic and finished 26th on NASCAR’s other restrictor plate track.

"We learned a little bit there as far as how we could be a bit more aggressive with our pit strategy considering where we are in points and (with) the wins we have. ... If we run out of gas, I can take that if we are trying to win a race."

                    SHORT ON PRACTICE

Rain forced cancellation of Thursday's second and final practice for the Coke Zero 400.

Winless Cup drivers Jamie McMurray (201.952 mph), Kyle Larson (201.889) and Clint Bowyer (201.839) were the fastest in a rain-delayed first session. Those times could loom large with thunderstorms a possibility for Friday afternoon at Daytona.

Qualifying is scheduled for 5:10 p.m ET Friday, but the starting grid would be set by practice times in the event of a rainout.

Brad Keselowski, Gordon, Joey Logano, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Greg Biffle also topped 201 mph. Johnson was 42nd among 44 drivers, settling for a best lap of 191.274, ahead of only Michael Waltrip and Terry Labonte.

                    DASHING FOR CASH

Friday night's Firecracker 250 serves as the qualifying race for the NASCAR Nationwide Series Dash 4 Cash that will take place during the ensuing four weeks.

The first four finishers at Daytona who are eligible for Nationwide Series driver points will qualify for weekly $100,000 prizes in each of the next four races to be run at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Iowa Speedway,

Should one driver win all four awards and win the final race of the series at Iowa outright, Nationwide Insurance will award that driver a $600,000 bonus for $1 million in total prize money.

"Ten thousand dollars is a ton of money for a Nationwide driver," series points leader Elliott Sadler said. "So not only are we trying to race for the win this weekend, we're also trying to be part of the Nationwide Series Dash 4 Cash."

It's also a lot of money for a fan -- four of whom who registered at www.NASCAR.com/Dash4Cash will receive expense-paid trips to Iowa and be randomly paired with the eligible D4C drivers in the race. The fan paired with the winning driver will also win $100,000.

"Most of all, it brings a lot of attention to our sponsors," Sadler said. "Our sponsors love it when you're part of that Dash 4 Cash. I like the new format with five weeks in a row on a lot of different styles of racetracks."

Sadler says the major concern for drivers in Friday's race will be the potential for overheating. "Running in a pack this weekend, we're going ro run hot," he said. "The biggest issue is the radiator intake grille opening is so small, so you're really going to have to watch your water temperature."
