Weather info you must know for Indians-Twins matchup

The Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins open a three-game series at Target Field Monday, but bettors should be aware weather conditions in the forecast.

There is a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms, but also wind blowing in from right field at 15 mph.

When wind blows in from right field at Target Field, the Over/Under record is 2-5 on the season. Oddsmakers have tabbed Monday's matchup with a total of nine.

Rain could be on tap at Turner Field Monday

The Atlanta Braves host the Miami Marlins from Turner Field Monday evening, but that game could be impacted by some rain.

According to DailyBaseballData.com, forecasts are calling for a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms with temperatures in the low-80s, dipping to high-70s.

Sportsbooks have the Braves as -200 home faves with a total of seven for the meeting of N.L. East rivals.

Niese to come off DL to start Monday for Mets

The Mets get a boost for their second-half hopes when left-handed starting pitcher Jon Niese comes off the disabled list to pitch the opener of a three-game series in Seattle.

Niese has been on the disabled list since July 5 with a left shoulder strain -- more specifically an inflammation in the AC joint in the shoulder.

Niese, 27, is 5-4 this season with a 2.96 earned-run average. But he has been battling shoulder and elbow soreness and has been limited to 17 starts. Niese has an opponents' batting average of .250 and has 74 strikeouts against 28 walks in 103 1/3 innings.

Niese left his July 4 start after pitching only one-third of an inning against the Texas Rangers. He went on the disabled list the following day.

Niese will be the only left-hander in the Mets rotation, joining right-handers Bartolo Colon, Dillon Gee, Zack Wheeler and Jacob deGrom.

Pirates cashing in with Volquez on the mound

The Pittsburgh Pirates are 4-0 in their last four games when Edinson Volquez gets the start.

Volquez is 8-6 with a 3.65 ERA on the season but has allowed a total of just three earned runs in 31 innings of work in those previous four starts.

The righty will take the mound at PNC Park with the Los Angeles Dodgers visiting Monday. The Bucs are currently -111 home faves with a total of 7.5.

Cubs to start Wada on Wednesday

Left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada was chosen to start the Chicago Cubs' game Wednesday, manager Rick Renteria announced Sunday, a move that fills out the post-break rotation.

Wada, 33, has made one previous start in the majors this season, having given up one unearned run in five innings of a no-decision in the second game of a July 8 doubleheader at Cincinnati. Wada is 10-6 with a 2.77 ERA in 18 appearances, 17 starts at Triple-A Iowa this season.

The eyes of baseball focus on Cliff Lee tonight

The market for starting pitchers will get a little more interesting on Monday night. Actually it could get a lot more interesting if Cliff Lee pitches well. The left-hander will come off the disabled list to face the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a four-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

            • Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.....
              13) Inteeresting game in San Diego Sunday, where Odrisamer Despaigne lost his no-hitter with two out in 8th inning, nursing a 1-0 lead, when Daniel Murphy hit a double to left-center. Manager not only left Despaigne in, despite his having thrown 120 pitches, he let him pitch to David Wright with first base open. Oy.

Black had a lefty in the bullpen to face Lucas duda, who was on deck, but Wright hit a single and tied the game. Brutal managing, but the Padres won anyway, when Met pitchers bungled two fielding plays in the ninth inning. Interesting game, though.

              12) Despaigne is a 27-year old Cuban rookie who is 2-1, 1.31 in his first five big league starts; he was 1-3, 7.61 in five AAA starts, before getting brought up. They brought him up the day they fired their general manager.

              11) Red Sox are supposedly going to use David Ross as Jon Lester's personal catcher and also in the first game of each series, to set the pitching plan for that series, to lessen the load on rookie catcher Christian Vazquez.

              10) Speaking of the Red Sox, wonder how much that Merrill Lynch ad costs on the edge of the Boston dugout. Every time they show a reaction shot on TV from the Red Sox dugout, you see that ad. Must cost a pretty penny.

              9) Rough ending for the Reds in the Bronx Sunday, where a popup fell untouched in very short right field, while three Cincinnati fielders stood around and watched each other as the winning run scored from third. Brutal play that left the Reds' TV guys speechless- they got swept this weekend.

              8) Early returns from Oakland: Tommy Milone is better than Jason Hammel; will be interesting to see how long it is before they bring Milone back to the A's rotation.

              7) Cubs are 2-11 since the Hammel/Samardzija trade; they were 11-8 in the 19 games before trading two of their three best starting pitchers.

              6) Shortstop prospect Addison Russell, reason the Cubs made that trade, is hitting .262 for the Cubs' AA team, but he is 5 for his last 11, and he is only 20.

              5) NBA Summer League is fun to watch, but when the Bulls sit Doug McDermott and basically forfiet their playoff game. it shows how much winning means. Was interesting to see the Bulls had three former New Mexico Lobos, plus David Wear from UCLA-- Steve Alford should've coached the team.

              4) You watch these NBA games and one phrase would be solid advice for kids who want to play in the NBA: "play through contact". NBA ball is very physical; if they called a foul on all contact, teams would shoot 70 foul shots a game.

              3) Had to park my rental car on the roof of the parking garage here Saturday; there was a concert in the hotel theater and the place was freakin' mobbed. Parking garage has 11 floors to it; took 20 minutes to park, once I got inside the garage.

              2) Pizza is expensive here, but the pizzas are bigger; thought the place in Miracle Mile shops was expensive, but the shop connected to the Planet Hollywood sports book is even worse-- $5.25 for a slice, albeit a really big slice.

              1) Singer Jon Bon Jovi owns an Arena League team; now he's rumored to be part of a group that would buy the Bills and keep them in western New York. GM of his Arena League team? Former NFL QB Ron Jaworski.

              • Who's Not Hot - AL

                July 20, 2014

It gets more and more interesting every week in the American League, as three of the teams that were in the thick of the fight for the playoffs last season, including the defending champs, are at the bottom of the league and the bottom of the money standings as well. Check out who is really burning your bankroll as we near 100 games into the 2014 season.

Texas Rangers (39-59, -$2,354) – Is it ever going to end for the Rangers? They've only won four games since the middle of June, and it is only a matter of time until they really just blow this whole thing apart. SS Elvis Andrus is one of the many who should probably be traded before the end of the month. OF Shin Soo-Choo has reached base once in his last 22 at bats. The whole lineup is in shambles, and the starting rotation could be made up of just guys who are on the DL. It's really all over for the Rangers, who are 20 games below .500, and we have a feeling that it could end up getting a heck of a lot worse for them before the end of the season.

Tampa Bay Rays (47-53, -$1,930) – Meanwhile, the Rays have managed to cut a massive dent into their deficit for the season. They'll never get back to the break-even point, but they could get a heck of a lot closer by the end of the year. They're 23-11 in their last 34 games, and they have shaved 7.5 games off of what was once a 15-game deficit in the AFC East. The starting pitching is starting to come back together with RHP Alex Cobb healthy. However, the bullpen still has some problems, as there really isn't a bona fide closer for this team right now. GM Andrew Freidman still has a big decision to make about the future of LHP David Price, but the feeling in Tampa Bay is that the team is still in it and can really win the whole thing.

Boston Red Sox (46-52, -$1,681) – These Red Sox just don't look nearly as good as the ones who won the World Series last year. 3B Brock Holt, OF Mookie Betts, RHP Rubby De La Rosa… Who are these guys? 2B Dustin Pedroia is having as bad of a season as he has ever had, and it feels like it's wearing off on the whole lineup. The Sox have a number of games this season in which they have been shut out either literally or figuratively, and it just isn't going to get any better than this in all likelihood. The question is whether men like RHP Jake Peavy can really get going again. When LHP Jon Lester is on the mound, these Red Sox are able to be backed. When he isn't out there though, there are all sorts of questions, and it feels like Russian Roulette backing the boys from Beantown.

                  July 20, 2014

Giants at Phillies – 7:05 PM EST

                  Probable Pitchers:
                  SF: Vogelsong (5-7, 3.86 ERA)
                  PHI: Lee (4-4, 3.18 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Giants failed to pull off the sweep of the Marlins, falling on Sunday, 3-2 as -130 road favorites. In the first two victories of the series, San Francisco outscored Miami, 14-4, as the Giants have won three of their past four series. The Phillies dropped two of three at Atlanta, including Sunday’s 8-2 setback as +170 underdogs. Philadelphia has lost six of its past seven meetings with Atlanta, while falling to 5-2 in the last seven road contests.

What to watch for: Lee is making his first start since May 18 after spending the last two months on the disabled list with a left elbow injury. The Phillies own a 1-4 record in Lee’s five home outings, in spite of a 1.77 ERA at Citizens Bank Park. The Giants are just 2-6 in their last eight road series openers, while San Francisco has been shut out in each of Vogelsong’s past three starts.

Dodgers at Pirates – 7:05 PM EST

                  Probable Pitchers:
                  LAD: Ryu (10-5, 3.44 ERA)
                  PIT: Volquez (8-6, 3.65 ERA)

Previous series recap: Pittsburgh swept a reeling Colorado squad at home, as the Bucs rallied from a 3-0 deficit for a 5-3 victory on Sunday. The Dodgers were tripped up at St. Louis this past weekend, losing the first two games before holding off the Cardinals on Sunday night as a heavy favorite. Los Angeles has stumbled on the road of late, putting together a 2-5 ledger the last seven away from Chavez Ravine.

What to watch for: The Pirates are on fire at home of late, winning 12 of their past 14 games at PNC Park, including four straight victories in home series openers. The last time these two teams met up at Chavez Ravine in late May, Pittsburgh captured three of four matchups, as the Pirates are 5-2 in the last seven games against the Dodgers. Los Angeles is 6-2 to the ‘under’ the last eight contests, including three of the past four on the highway.

Red Sox at Blue Jays – 7:05 PM EST

                  Probable Pitchers:
                  BOS: Lackey (10-6, 3.79 ERA)
                  TOR: Hutchison (6-8, 4.16 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Red Sox finished off a three-game home sweep of the slumping Royals, including Sunday’s 6-0 shutout of Kansas City as -155 favorites. Boston has won seven of its past eight contests, but still sit six games below the .500 mark. The Blue Jays bounced back from Friday’s loss to the Rangers, as Toronto won the final two games of the series as heavy favorites.

What to watch for: Toronto swept Boston at Fenway Park in late May, as the Jays scored 20 runs in the three victories, resulting in three ‘overs.’ The Red Sox have drilled the ‘over’ in each of Lackey’s last four starts, while Boston is 3-1 in his past four road outings. The Jays have struggled when Hutchison pitches at Rogers Center, as Toronto posted a 2-5 record in his seven home starts.

Reds at Brewers – 8:10 PM EST

                  Probable Pitchers:
                  CIN: Latos (2-1, 2.79 ERA)
                  MIL: Peralta (10-6, 3.72 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Reds were swept by the Yankees in the Bronx, capped off by a walk-off defeat on Sunday, 3-2. Cincinnati fell to 0-5 on the road against American League foes, while slipping to 0-6 in the last six away contests. The Brewers grabbed the series opener at Washington on Friday as a heavy underdog, but lost the final two games, including Sunday’s 5-4 walk-off setback as +115 underdogs.

What to watch for: Cincinnati has performed well against division foes on the road, owning a 9-3 mark in the past 12 games within the NL Central away from the Great American Ballpark. The Brewers have cashed the ‘over’ in each of Peralta’s last six outings, while Milwaukee has dropped seven of its past eight games at Miller Park.

Orioles at Angels – 10:10 PM EST

                  Probable Pitchers:
                  BAL: Norris (7-6, 3.96 ERA)
                  LAA: Shoemaker (7-2, 4.38 ERA)

Previous series recap: The Angels keep rolling at home, improving to 20-3 the last 23 contests at Angels Stadium after rallying past the Mariners on Sunday, 6-5 to cash as heavy -170 favorites. Since May, the Halos have captured 10 consecutive home series, including five straight series finales in Orange County. The Orioles began their West Coast swing by dropping two of three to the Athletics, as Baltimore was blown out on Sunday, 10-2. All three games finished ‘over’ the total at Oakland, extending Baltimore’s road ‘over’ streak to six games.

What to watch for: Monday marks the first meeting between these teams this season, as the Orioles took five of seven matchups in 2013. The Halos are 4-1 in Shoemaker’s five home starts, while L.A. has compiled eight consecutive victories in home series openers. The Orioles have won eight of their past 12 away contests, as Baltimore looks to improve on a 5-3 mark in the previous eight road games against AL West foes.

                    • Giants place Cain, Belt on DL

The San Francisco Giants placed right-hander Matt Cain and first baseman Brandon Belt on the 15-day disabled list Monday.

Cain has been pitching with a sore elbow throughout the season. The move is retroactive to July 11.

Belt is on the seven-day concussion DL.

The club recalled infielder Adam Duvall and right-handed reliever George Kontos from Triple-A Fresno to take their spots on the 25-man roster.

Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit will start in place of Cain on Tuesday at the Philadelphia Phillies. Michael Morse is expected to start at first base in Belt's absence.

Cain is 2-7 with a 4.18 ERA over 90 1/3 innings this season.

Belt is batting .242 with a .304 on-base percentage, 10 home runs and 23 RBIs in 46 games this year. He was previously on the DL for nearly two months earlier this season with a broken thumb.

The Under has been the hot bet lately with Washington Nationals pitcher Doug Fister on the hill. In Fister's last six outings, the Under is 6-1. The veteran gets the ball for the Nats when they visit the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field Monday.

Washington is currently -141 faves with a total of 10.5. Bettors need to to take note of Fister's under trend as well as the abnormally high total for the matchup - call it the "Coors Field effect."

The market for starting pitchers will get a little more interesting on Monday night. Actually it could get a lot more interesting if Cliff Lee pitches well. The left-hander will come off the disabled list to face the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a four-game series at Citizens Bank Park.
