Series recap: The Mariners took care of the Indians on Tuesday, 5-2, thanks to a four-run fourth inning. Seattle cashed as +105 underdogs to even the season series at 2-2 with Cleveland, while all four meetings have finished ‘under’ the total.

What to watch for: The Indians have fallen apart of late, dropping seven of their past nine games, while their starting pitchers have lasted five innings or less five times in this span. The Mariners continue to pitch well, cashing the ‘under in eight consecutive contests. Seattle owns a 6-1 record in Hernandez’s last seven road outings, while the former Cy Young winner shut down Cleveland at home last month in a 3-0 victory.

Angels at Orioles – 7:05 PM EST

For the first time all season, the Angels have dropped consecutive starts by Richards, both as a short favorite against the Tigers and Mariners. Blue Jays at Red Sox – 7:10 PM EST

Series recap: The Jays continued their recent domination of the Red Sox, beating Boston for the fifth time in the past week with last night’s 4-2 triumph. Even more impressive than that streak is Toronto’s perfect 5-0 record this season at Fenway Park, as the Jays have outscored the Sox, 38-13 in Beantown.

What to watch for: With Jon Lester scratched due to a possible trade, the Sox turn to Workman, who has lost each of his past four starts. Toronto has won nine of its past 11 games, but the club owns a dreadful 1-6 record in its previous seven Game 3’s of a road series. The Sox have dropped seven of their last eight contests, while scoring just six runs in the past four games.

Braves at Dodgers – 10:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
ATL: Wood (7-8, 3.44 ERA)
LA: Greinke (12-6, 2.74 ERA)

Series recap: The Dodgers rallied for an 8-4 victory last night after trailing early, 4-2. Los Angeles cashed as -140 home favorites to win four straight games for the first time this season. Prior to Tuesday, the Dodgers had won three consecutive contests seven times in 2014, but never managed to capture four straight victories before last night.

What to watch for: Los Angeles is 6-2 when Greinke starts at Chavez Ravine, while the right-hander split a pair of starts against Atlanta last season. Wood has alternated between the starting rotation and the bullpen for the Braves, but the southpaw has won just once in his past five starts away from Turner Field. Atlanta has done a solid job of rebounding following a poor pitching effort, compiling a 6-2 record the past eight games after allowing at least six runs.

Cardinals at Padres – 10:10 PM EST

STL: Kelly (2-1, 3.90 ERA)
SD: Hahn (6-2, 2.12 ERA)

Series recap: The Padres put up just three runs, but that was enough to knock off the Cardinals, 3-1 on Tuesday night as -115 home favorites. San Diego improved to 8-3 in its past 11 games at Petco Park, while moving to 5-2 in its previous seven home matchups with St. Louis since 2012.

What to watch for: Since losing his Major League debut to Pittsburgh, the Padres have won six of Hahn’s last seven starts, including consecutive road underdog triumphs over the Dodgers and Braves. Kelly struggled in his last outing against the Cubs by allowing five earned runs and eight hits in less than five innings of a 7-6 defeat. Last night’s loss dropped St. Louis to 5-6 on the road against NL West foes this season, while scoring two runs or less for the sixth time in this span.

13) Tampa Bay can't trade David Price, can they? They're hot as hell, only 4.5 games out of a Wild Card slot- they'd be spitting on their fans if they trade him.

12) A 93-year old water main broke in Westwood, with six inches flooding Pauley Pavilion, UCLA's basketball arena, as water spurted uncontrolled for over three hours. Pauley Pavilion was renovated only two years ago.

11) Cincinnati Reds are 2-9 since All-Star Game; the wins were 1-0/3-0 games, so it is obvious that they really miss Joey Votto/Brandon Phillips.

10) Vin Scully announced last night that he will return next year for his 66th season broadcasting Dodger baseball- he started when Harry Truman was President.

9) San Francisco Giants were shut out four times in Ryan Vogelsong's last five starts; they're now three games behind the Dodgers and fading fast.

8) Rangers lost 12-11 at home, despite JP Arencibia hitting two HRs, knocking in seven runs. He is still hitting only .183 after his 4-5 night.

7) Mets wore camouflage jerseys Monday, bright orange jerseys last night; would be nice if they used as much creativity in trying to upgrade their roster.

6) It bears repeating that two teams bid on Yoenis Cespedes when he was a free agent after coming here from Cuba; the A's and Marlins,. and Miami's offer was 1/3 of Oakland's offer. What would Cespedes get on the open market now?

5) White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers was hitting .219 when he started wearing glasses; he's hitting .395 since he started wearing the spectacles.

4) Red Sox scratched Jon Lester from Wednesday's start, adding speculation he is getting traded. Brandon Workman takes his place in the Boston rotation.

3) Memo to Seattle Seahawk fans: 2005 Patriots are last defending champ to win an NFL playoff game.

2) You know its time to end your Las Vegas vacation when you lose a 16-inning baseball game and the winning pitcher is the other team's backup catcher. John Baker also scored the game-winning run, ending the 6:27 marathon.

Thunderstorms could hit a pair of stadiums Wednesday

Forecasts are calling for a potential chance of scattered thunderstorms at a pair of ball parks Wednesday.

There is a 40 percent possibility of thunderstorms that could hit Progressive Field in Cleveland as the Indians host the Seattle Mariners as well as a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms hitting Comerica Park as the Detroit Tigers host the Chicago White Sox.


Phillies struggle, Mets thrive with Meals working

The New York Mets host the Philadelphia Philles in one six games to get early starts Wednesday. Once the clubs take the field, opinions could potentially be divided on who will be working behind home plate.

Jerry Meals will be calling balls and strikes for the game and while the Mets have struggled in recent games with Meals in that role, the Phillies have been successful. The Mets are 3-9 in their last 12 games with Meals working and the Phillies are 16-5 in their last 21 when Meals works the dish.

The Mets are -155 home faves for this game, while the Phils are +143 dogs. The total is currently 7.5.

Series recap: These two clubs have split the first two games of this set after Cleveland blanked Seattle on Wednesday, 2-0 in a pitcher’s duel between Corey Kluber and Felix Hernandez. Kluber tossed a complete-game shutout to cash as a short favorite, one night after the Mariners knocked around the Indians in a 5-2 triumph on Tuesday.

What to watch for: Seattle continues to be an ‘under’ machine, drilling the ‘under’ in nine consecutive games. The M’s own an impressive record off a road loss since May, posting a 10-2 mark in this situation. The Indians have responded well in home series finales the last two months, putting together a 7-1 record. Cleveland has struggled with McAllister on the mound this season, losing seven of his past nine starts.

Angels at Orioles – 7:05 PM EST

Series recap: The Orioles go for the sweep tonight after holding off the Angels in a pair of one-run victories. Following Tuesday’s walk-off win in extra innings, Baltimore edged Los Angeles on Wednesday, 4-3 as +125 underdogs. The O’s built a 4-0 lead before the Angels rallied to cut the deficit to one run, but Baltimore held on for its fourth win in five tries against Los Angeles this season.

What to watch for: Baltimore’s pitching is cruising lately, allowing three runs or less seven times in the last nine games, resulting in eight ‘unders.’ After going nearly six weeks without a win when Skaggs takes the mound, the Angels are 3-0 in the southpaw’s last three starts. The Orioles have hit six straight ‘unders’ when Norris starts, while Baltimore is 5-2 in his past seven trips to the hill.

Previous series recap: The Reds continue to fall backwards in the NL Central race after losing two of three to the Diamondbacks at home. Cincinnati dropped a 5-4 decision to Arizona on Wednesday, as the four runs scored by the Reds were the most they have plated since the All-Star break. The Marlins couldn’t pull off the home sweep of the Nationals, losing on Wednesday 4-3 to snap a six-game winning streak.

What to watch for: This is the first meeting between these teams this season, as Cincinnati put together a 6-1 record against Miami in 2013. The Reds ended a nine-game ‘under’ streak with Wednesday’s ‘over’ against Arizona in which Cincinnati scored three runs in the ninth inning to bust the total of 7. Cincinnati has lost nine consecutive road games, but the club is 7-2 in Cueto’s past nine starts. Koehler is making his first home start since July 2, as Miami is 1-4 in his last five outings at Marlins Park.

Pirates at Diamondbacks – 9:40 PM EST

Previous series recap: The Pirates continue their venture through the NL West after grabbing two of three from the Giants at AT&T Park. Pittsburgh fell to San Francisco in the series finale on Wednesday, 7-5 as a short underdog, snapping a three-game winning streak. The Diamondbacks return home following a 3-3 road trip at Philadelphia and Cincinnati in which Arizona alternated wins and losses during the six-game stretch, capped off by Wednesday’s one-run triumph over the Reds.

What to watch for: Pittsburgh beat Arizona two of three times at PNC Park earlier this month, which included a 3-2 walk-off victory as Pittsburgh scored each of its three runs in the ninth inning to capture the series opener. Locke took the mound in that contest, tossing eight innings while receiving a no-decision. Arizona owns a 5-1 record in Collmenter’s past six starts, which includes a pair of solid performances in home wins over the Cubs and Marlins.

Braves at Dodgers – 10:10 PM EST
