    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Notes, observations from the NBA Draft.........

-- Since 2003, Spurs have taken 12 international players, Toronto nine, the most of any NBA teams.

-- Three of the first 18 selections last night were Canadian kids.

-- NBA showed great class bringing Isaiah Austin to New York and letting him hear his name called. Young man is going back to Baylor to finish his degree and will have a job with the NBA waiting for him when he gets out, if he wants it.

-- Bad news for Steve Alford: three of the top 30 players takes were UCLA kids, meaning he starts over almost from scratch with his Bruins in the fall.

-- Its sad that Zach LaVine got drafted before Gary Harris; LaVine scored 9.4 ppg in his only season at UCLA. He can jump high, but can he play?

-- It kills me when kids who shouldn't come out early. Who is advising them?

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Thoughts on the NBA Draft..........

    13) Its almost like the NBA Draft should be held after the free agency period, when teams have a better idea of what their core is going to look like. I mean, fact of the matter is where Lebron-Love-Anthony-Wade wind up is going to shape this league a hell of a lot more than any player that was picked Thursday night.

    12) Zach LaVine was picked six slots ahead of Gary Harris, which infers that Minnesota's personnel guys don't watch game tape. Too many NBA teams draft based on potential, rather than production. LaVine scored 9.4 ppg in college last year; he can jump very high, but can he play? The fact that he seemed distraught when Minnesota picked him doesn't help matters either.

    11) Chicago traded for Doug McDermott, who gives the Bulls scoring punch.

    10) My friend Joe in Philly tells me that 76er fans in Philly are delighted with the Joel Embiid pick; they wouldn't have been happy with Dante Exum. I'm liking Philly trading for Dario Saric, but he won't be here for two years.

    9) Myself, I'm really nervous for Embiid; he didn't finish his college season with a bad back, then broke his foot this spring and is rumored to have soft bones, whatever that means. I'm old enough to remember Sam Bowie, who was infamously drafted ahead of Michael Jordan. This might not turn out well.

    8) Lakers drafted Julius Randle, who reminds some of Zach Randolph; he can do a lot of interviews with GQ now that he'll be living in Tinseltown.

    7) It almost seems like ESPN doesn't take the draft seriously when it puts wiseguy Bill Simmons on its draft coverage; Rece Davis and Jay Bilas are fine, but how about having someone on the panel who has actually drafted players? Would this be such a difficult thing, to put an out of work GM on camera?

    6) When did bow ties come back into style? Can't think this is a good thing.

    5) 7-foot-2 Walter Tavares, who didn't own sneakers until five years ago, much less play basketball, was drafted in the second round by Atlanta. He's not a great athlete, he doesn't know much about the game, he's a good shot blocker and a pretty good rebounder in the Spanish League, but he is a project. I would've gone for 7-5 Sim Bhullar from New Mexico State, who has two years of college under his belt.

    4) Orlando took Aaron Gordon with the 4th pick; he shot 42.2% from the foul line, on 180 attempts last year. I'm a 54-year old non-athlete who could go to the playground right now in the middle of the night in my sandals and make more than 42% from the foul line. Work on your skills kids. Shooting is a skill.

    3) Wednesday night, former Baylor guard Pierre Jackson was playing in a summer league game at a middle school in Las Vegas; last night, he was traded to the 76ers, where he figures to make their roster. Jackson was a stellar college player who was bouncing around the D-League before his big break last night.

    2) I feel bad for kids who come out of school early, then aren't picked, a kid like Khem Birch at UNLV, for instance. Who advises these kids? Now they're thrown into the D-League or go to Europe and they're a longshot to make the NBA, when they could've stayed in college and worked on their games more and improved.

    1) On the other hand, it can be a blessing in disguise not to get drafted, since it gives you a chance to land on a summer league team with a franchise that needs your particular skills. I'll be in Las Vegas next month for part of the NBA Summer League, guys playing for their basketball lives. Highly competitive, very interesting to see.

What trend was money on the diamond Thursday night?

Home teams went 8-2 against the runline in Major League Baseball action Thursday night, good for a success rate of 80 percent.

Home favorites went 5-1, while home dogs went 3-1.

This is a nice change as home teams have struggled against the runline, hitting just under 43 percent of the time this season.

Dodgers' SS Hanley Ramirez, questionable Friday

Ramirez is dealing with shoulder irritation and has missed the last three games. He had an MRI done that reviled no serious damage and he is questionable for Friday against the Cardinals

Blue Jays' RF Jose Bautista, questionable Friday

Bautista has a Grade 1 hamstring strain and has missed the last four games. He is questionable for Friday against the White Sox.

Game of the Day: Cardinals at Dodgers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers (-138, 7)

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals own two of the best pitching staffs in the league and are already putting them on display early in the series. The offenses will attempt to combine for more than one run when the Dodgers host the Cardinals in the second of a four-game series on Friday. Josh Beckett and Adam Wainwright matched zeros through seven innings in the opener before Wainwright blinked in the 1-0 final.

Los Angeles is allowing an average of 2.1 in the last 10 games and owns eight wins in that span as it chases down the San Francisco Giants in the National League West. The Cardinals are losers of five of their last nine and have the offense to blame. St. Louis has scored a total of nine runs in those five losses and wasted two chances to score in Thursday’s opener when Allen Craig was thrown out at the plate and Peter Bourjos slid past second base and was tagged out after an easy steal in the ninth.

                        LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the Dodgers as -144 faves, but that has since moved to -138.The total opened at 7.

                        POWER RANKINGS:
                        Cardinals (-192), Dodgers (-183)

                        INJURY REPORT:
Cardinals: 2B Koston Wong (15-day DL, shoulder). Dodgers - LF Carl Crawford (15-day DL, ankle), 3B Chone Figgins (15-day DL, quad), SS H Ramirez (questionable, shoulder)

                        PITCHING MATCHUP:
Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (1-3, 4.33 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Hyun-jin Ryu (9-3, 3.06)

Martinez is getting his third straight start as he stretches out after beginning the season in the bullpen. The 22-year-old picked up a win on Sunday against Philadelphia, when he allowed three runs - all in one inning – on three hits over five frames. Martinez made four appearances out of the bullpen in the playoffs against Los Angeles last fall and yielded one hit in a total of 4 2/3 scoreless frames.

Ryu has won back-to-back starts, allowing one run over six innings in each turn. The South Korea native owns six quality starts in his last seven outings and has issued just 18 walks in 82 1/3 innings. Ryu is making his second career regular-season start against St. Louis after allowing an unearned run over seven innings to earn a win his first time facing the Cardinals.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
                        * Cardinals are 5-1 in their last six versus a team with a wining record.
                        * Dodgers are 6-1 in their last seven games as a favorite.
                        * Under is 7-0 in Cardinal's last seven games versus a team with a winning record.

                        CONSENSUS:
Sixty-two percent of Consensus wagers are on the home team Dodgers.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB weekend betting cheat sheet: Cardinals are Kershaw's Kryptonite
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this weekend's major league action:

Brewers Best at the Midway Point

The Milwaukee Brewers reached the midway point of their season in style, defeating the Colorado Rockies 7-4 Thursday to improve to a National League-best 49-32. The Brewers lead the majors in money won at +$1,534 and have a 42-35-4 O/U record.

                          Toronto Averse to Big Totals

The Toronto Blue Jays (-165, 9.5) face another big total Friday as they face the visiting Chicago White Sox in the second of a four-game series. The Blue Jays have seen plenty of lofty numbers of late but have largely underwhelmed, going 3-11-1 O/U in their last 15 games with the total set at nine or higher.

                          Phenomenal Phil

The Minnesota Twins send Phil Hughes to the hill Saturday to face Yu Darvish and the Texas Rangers. Hughes enters Friday as the top money-winner in the majors at +$1,050, with the Twins going an impressive 11-4 in his 15 starts so far.

                          Kershaw's Kryptonite?

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw will look to end a curious career trend Sunday as he faces the visiting St. Louis Cardinals. Kershaw is just 4-5 in 12 career starts, with a 3.75 ERA - his highest against any National League opponent.

                          Pitching Notes

                          * Arizona right-hander Brandon McCarthy has been bad news for the Diamondbacks, who are 2-14 in his 16 starts entering Friday's game against host San Diego (-133, 6.5). But both of those victories came against the Padres, who are coming off a no-hitter loss to San Francisco.

                          * San Francisco fans will undoubtedly be pleased that their Saturday tilt with visiting Cincinnati takes place under the lights. Reds starter Alfredo Simon is just 4-2 with a 4.01 ERA and 3-4 O/U in night starts this season, compared to a 6-1 mark with a 2.11 ERA and 1-7 O/U in afternoon action.

                          * Milwaukee hurler Yovani Gallardo appears to have turned things around entering Sunday's start against visiting Colorado. Gallardo has allowed just three runs - and zero homers - over his past four starts after surrendering 24 runs - and eight home runs - in his previous six outings.

                          Hitting Notes

                          * Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett is having a month to remember, batting an even .400 so far in June entering Friday's encounter with the Rockies (+179, 9). Gennett has 11 RBIs over his previous nine games, during which Milwaukee is 7-2 SU and 6-2-1 O/U.

                          * It could be tough sledding for Houston hitters in their Saturday encounter with the host Detroit Tigers. Members of the Astros roster are hitting just .159 with 24 strikeouts in 69 at-bats against Tigers starter Max Scherzer.

                          * Chicago White Sox rookie Jose Abreu may find things difficult in Sunday's series finale with the Toronto Blue Jays. Abreu enters Friday hitting just .242 versus left-handed pitching, and will face one of the league's hottest southpaws in Toronto's Mark Buehrle.

                          Totals Streak

Colorado Rockies (6-1-1 O/U): How big is too big a total? That has been a difficult question to answer for oddsmakers who continue to struggle with the high-scoring Rockies; Colorado faced three totals of 11 or higher in a six-game stretch, and promptly went 2-0-1 O/U.

                          Prop of the Day

The Brewers are a strong bet at -4.5, paying +400 against a Rockies team that ranks last in the majors in team ERA (4.93).

                          Injury Notes

                          * An MRI on Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez's right shoulder revealed no structural damage, meaning he'll likely avoid a DL stint. The Dodgers are 6-2 SU, 2-6 O/U and +422 units in eight games without Ramirez so far in 2014.

                          * Colorado third baseman Nolan Arenado will take batting practice Friday as he continues to rehab a fractured left middle finger. The Rockies have scuffled in his absence, going 9-22 SU, 18-10-3 O/U and losing a whopping -1,185 units over that stretch.

                          * Washington outfielder Bryce Harper may return from a torn thumb ligament as soon as Monday. Harper has been on the disabled list since late-April with the injury; the Nationals are 28-26 SU, 22-27-5 O/U and -270 units in his absence.

                          Weather Watch

                          * Fans at The Ballpark in Arlington are in for some unusual weather Friday, with wind blowing in from center field at 17 mph for the game between the host Rangers (-133, 9.5) and Minnesota. Texas played just two games under similar conditions last season, with teams combining to hit a paltry .168.

                          * Wind at Wrigley Field will be blowing out to left field Saturday when the Cubs entertain the Nationals. Teams averaged a whopping 11.33 runs and three home runs under similar conditions a season ago, well above stadium averages.

                          Umpire Note of the Day

The home team is 8-0 in umpire Dale Scott's last eight Friday games behind home plate involving Colorado. That's bad news for the Rockies, who visit red-hot Milwaukee.

                              Kentucky possible gateway to Chase

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will host just their fourth race at Kentucky Speedway Saturday night.

In the previous three races, the Quaker State 400 -- presented by Advance Auto Parts -- has produced three different race winners and three different pole sitters (2011 pole sitter set by rule book for inclement weather).

That leads a trend that Saturday night's event could be an open-gate for any team or driver to race their way into the 2014 Chase.

In a sense, it's hard to believe that not one team or driver for that matter has stood out and called Kentucky Speedway their own. Before being placed on the NSCS schedule in 2011, the track was the No. 1 facility utilized by teams to test for their intermediate program.

Hendrick Motorsports with drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne are considered pre-race-favorites, considering the amount of success that HMS has achieved over the past month, including five consecutive wins with three different drivers. Last week, their dominance in Victory Lane was stopped by Roush Fenway Racing's Carl Edwards at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway, but Hendrick Motorsports still took two of the top-three spots and put all four entries inside the top seven.

Still, there are plenty in the field that feel that they too can win at the 1.5-mile speedway. Joey Logano is searching for his third win of the season, at a track where he maneuvered three NASCAR Nationwide Series. Kyle Busch is also in a similar boat, with two wins in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, including last night's UNOH 225, but how about someone like Clint Bowyer? He nearly won last year's race and enters the 17th race of the year winless.

"I'm really looking forward to getting back here -- we ran second here last race. More importantly, hungry for a win," said Bowyer. "This is a fun race track. It is a challenge to get through those bumps in the corners, but that's an opportunity. You have to be able to pounce on opportunities right now in the situation we're in, but I do believe we're finally poised for a win."

                              Johnson Visits Oval Office

Reining NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson made a pit stop Wednesday at the White House in Washington, D.C. to meet with President Barack Obama to be honored for his championship achievements last season.

Johnson received many accolades from the Commander-in-Chief, even referring to him as the "Michael Jordan" of NASCAR. Furthermore, President Obama also noted that Johnson's role model presence expands outside the racing circle, saying, "These days we've got a lot of kids all across the country who want to be like Jimmie, and why shouldn't they?"

For Johnson, who's visited the White House more than a half a dozen times, reflected on his most recent experience, which was seemingly more meaningful than others, as he was joined by team owner Rick Hendrick, crew chief Chad Knaus and members of his No. 48 team.

"Of course it was a huge honor for myself and the team," Johnson said. "The fact that I was able to be there with my teammates to experience the tour and those few minutes that we had with the President, was great. Honestly, we've moved on from the 2013 season and are heavy into the 2014 season, so it was a nice opportunity to reflect back and to bring back those memories and feelings of accomplishment and to share that with my crew guys. Mr. Hendrick was there, of course, and Chad (Knaus, crew chief) for the first time after all these years. It was just an awesome experience. To look out into the audience and see my daughter there and my wife, it was just a very cool experience."

But, what about that moment that stood out to Johnson as he listened to the President?

"It was a surreal moment standing on stage next to him and hearing him reference or compare me to Michael Jordan, with the six championships I assume is where he was going with that, and hear our foundation (Jimmie Johnson Foundation) mentioned and all the hard work that we've put in there," said Johnson. "I didn't know what his speech would be. But to hear him go through and articulate with great detail, the things that we've accomplished as a team on and off the track and what the foundation has done, I sat there with goose bumps, head to toe just hearing all that stuff. It was pretty neat."

Gaughan's First Nationwide Win (Finally) Sinking In

It never crossed Brendan Gaughan's mind if he would win again in NASCAR, but after a 10-year drought, the mind began to wander. All that wondering, thinking and stressing though (finally) came to an end nearly a week ago in Road America (Wisc.), when Gaughan recorded his first career NASCAR Nationwide Series win in dramatic fashion in the Gardner Denver 200.

Gaughan, considered one of the liveliest and fan-favorite drivers in the sport is still riding cloud nine entering Friday night's John R. Elliott HERO Campaign 300 presented by Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

"It's been a long time since I've got a win and it's been documented greatly by many, many places, it's one of those things where I always said when I got back to Victory Lane, I understood the difference between when I was 28 years old and when I'm 38 years old, but I appreciate it very much, I appreciate all the words and all the support that fans, friends, people you didn't know were friends, people that hated you," Gaughan said. "All the kind words have been really overwhelming, I've taken it all in and appreciate every bit of it. I think the best congratulations I got (though) was from my father (Michael) who reminded me that even a blind squirrel finds a nut some days."

While some were surprised by Gaughan's triumph on a road course, the obvious improvement in ECR power, as well as new chassis' in recent NASCAR Nationwide Series races has bode well for the organization and leaves the Welcome, North Carolina organization on a hot streak, winning the last two races at Michigan International Speedway and Road America respectively.

"We've been talking about it for a few weeks now," Gaughan said. "We've rolled out a brand new generation of our chassis and bodies, I have the race car that raced Charlotte, which is a kind-of hybrid of our new technology, but it was very good. We expect great things when we come to a place like this and now we're starting to prove it, we're on a two game winning streak here with Paul Menard at Michigan and myself at Road America, so we would love to keep that steak alive.

"This statistically I think is one of my best tracks in NASCAR, so I'm coming in here with very, very high expectations. Our race team is starting to feel good. The goal is to come in here and be like I always am. Be the same guy, drive the hell out of the racecar, give Shane Wilson (crew chief) the feedback, try to make it better and have the confidence in the equipment that I've always have, but now I have a little more confidence in myself. I would love to get it done on an oval again."
