    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Tim Lincecum no-hit the Padres for second time in 11 months, first player since 1910 to no-hit the same team twice.

    -- Lincecum's no-hitter last year was 148 pitches; yesterday's was 113.

-- Knicks traded Tyson Chandler back to Dallas in a multi-player trade; they get Jose Calderon/Shane Larkin back, as Phil Jackson begins his re-tooling process.

-- Houston Rockets got a 2015 first round pick from New Orleans for Omer Asik, who apparently didn't enjoy playing with Dwight Howard very much. Teams are clearing cap space to try and sign Lebron James/Carmelo Anthony.

-- Orioles rallied back from down 4-0 in 8th inning, beat Chicago 5-4 in 12th. O's are 40-36 without a marquee pitcher. Buck Showalter is an excellent manager.

-- A's signed a 10-year lease to stay in the Oakland Coliseum; not sure how the 49ers rate a new stadium for 10 dates a year but the A's (81 dates) don't.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

    13) NBA Draft is tonight, the weirdest of all drafts for me. I spend my whole winter watching college basketball, hundreds of games, then guys get drafted that I’ve barely heard of, since they’re from overseas. Dante Exum is an Australian point guard touted as a top 5 pick. 76ers have the third pick; their coach, Brett Brown coached for 13 years in Australia, so if the Sixers pass on the kid, what does that tell the rest of the teams?

    12) Then there is Walter Taveras, a 7-foot-2 22-year old enigma from Cape Verde, who has barely played basketball- he scored 6.4 ppg on whatever team he was on last year. They say he LOOKS like a player (which can be dangerous) but his physical conditioning is poor and he just hasn’t played much ball, which is both good and bad. He has more upside, but you have no idea if the love of the game and desire to excel is there. He could be Tiago Splitter and he could be Greg Oden.

    11) I’m not a big Marcus Smart fan; I always expected him to take games over but he didn’t seem like that kind of a player; his worst possessions in NCAAs against Gonzaga were when Oklahoma State had the best chance to win. Would’ve liked to see him stay another year in college, since his season last year was disjointed for various reasons, but no one does that anymore. I’m suspicious of Smart as a player, and he’s going to go fairly high.

    10) Then there is Julius Randle, who blew off a workout with the Celtics to meet with GQ Magazine about style. Seriously, that happened. Who is his agent? Major red flag there. Where are his priorities?

    9) St John’s backed off on its recruitment of Oregon transfer Dominic Artis because of an off-court incident in Eugene; Artis wound up getting thrown out of Oregon along with two others. There are politics involved here in a case where the details are murky; he’s going to wind up at some mid or low major and make whatever coach that gets him very happy, as long as he keeps his nose clean from here on in.

    8) Andrew Wiggins already signed a deal with Play Station to endorse its products; some of these players make more money off the court than on it, which is where having a solid agent comes in handy. It could also make the Lebron James situation more interesting, as one of his endorsers could push for him to play in a more high profile market, helping their product’s visibility.

    7) Chase Utley won’t waive his no-trade clause so the Phillies can deal him before the July 31 trade deadline. Once you’ve been in the big leagues for 10 years, the last five with the same team, you can refuse to be traded, which is where Utley sits now. Philly probably needs to purge its older players and start over, but if you can’t trade those players for prospects, that makes the project a hell of a lot harder.

    6) Tampa Bay isn’t going to contend this year and David Price can walk after the 2015 season, so they’re likely to deal him now, to maximize what they get back for him. Sad for Rays fans, but the best way for them to return to contention, unless what they get back for him is worth less than the two draft picks they’d get if he walked in free agency. They’ll be able to do better than that for Price.

    5) Odd fact: the last two Heisman Trophy winners were first-year starting QB’s. Has college football gotten simpler? You wouldn’t think young players could step in and be successful so quickly, but they've been doing it.

    4) Why isn’t the humerus considered the funny bone? Wouldn’t this make sense?

    3) Read this week where the SEC has a reserve fund of $46M, which is why coaches make a fortune and why lawyers are pushing for athletes to be paid.

    2) Glad to see that baseball changed the rules for a catcher at home plate; on force plays, he is allowed more leeway as to where he stands, since that is more like a play at first base than a regular tag play. Their flexibility to change rules on the fly shows that they really do want to get it right, but it is still a work in progress.

    1) I’m waiting for a major league manager to lose an instant replay challenge, then run over, grab the headphones from that bag and start yelling at whoever is on the other end of them in New York City.

This is going to happen; whoever does it will be immortalized on ESPN highlights forever, with Jim Mora “Playoffs?!?!?!?” and Allen Iverson “Practice?!?!?”

Phillies' Cliff Lee ready to face hitters

The Phillies have pegged Friday as the day for Cliff Lee to face hitters in a simulated game, which is essentially batting practice at full speed.

Lee, on the disabled list since May 20 with an elbow strain, is ready to graduate to facing some hitters after throwing for almost two weeks on flat ground and in the bullpen.

Depending on how Lee checks out after his session Friday, he could throw to hitters again or be ready for a minor-league rehab start. He is expected to return to the Phillies’ rotation by the all-star break, provided all continues to go well in his rehab.

Game of the Day: Argonauts at Blue Bombers

Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+5, 53.5)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the Toronto Argonauts on Thursday to kick off the 2014 CFL season. It’s a matchup between the best and worst teams in the East Division last season, with Toronto using its depth on offense to earn a first-round playoff bye. The Blue Bombers, meanwhile, allowed a league-worst 585 points and managed one victory at brand-new Investors Group Field.

Winnipeg overhauled its roster in the offseason starting at quarterback, where former Saskatchewan Roughriders backup pivot Drew Willy will have a chance to establish himself as a starter. If the preseason is any indication, Argonauts veteran Ricky Ray looks healthy and ready to resume running the offense with capable backups Trevor Harris and Mitchell Gale behind him on the depth chart. The big question for Winnipeg will be whether its injury-depleted defense can handle Toronto’s pace and give Willy a shot at his first victory as a Blue Bomber.

                              LINE HISTORY:
Toronto opened as a 5-point home favorite (-106) and jumped to -5 (-108). The total opened 53.5 points (Over -106) and has moved to Over -109.

                              INJURY REPORT:
Winnipeg: Paris Cotton RB (Doubt/knee), Graig Newman DB (Out/Ankle)

                              ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (2013: 11-7, 9-8-1 ATS):
Former Montreal Alouettes linebacker Shea Emry is the new face of Toronto’s defense, bringing his impressive resume to a group that faced a lot of turnover in the offseason. Changes will be notable on offense as well after veteran wide receiver Romby Bryant was released in the final round of cuts and running back Chad Kackert announced his retirement. Recently released slotback Jamel Richardson is rumored to be joining the Argonauts, giving Ray another option alongside Chad Owens.

ABOUT THE BLUE BOMBERS (2013: 3-15, 5-12-1 ATS):
Linebacker Korey Banks, cornerback Donovan Alexander and defensive back Alex Suber are all injured to start the season, leaving plenty of holes in pass protection. Former starting quarterback Max Hall was among the final round of cuts for Winnipeg, an indication the team seems confident in Willy as the No. 1 option. Willy will have former training partner Nick Moore and a host of new receiving options to work with as the Blue Bombers try to rebuild an offense that never really came to life in 2013.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Argonauts are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four meetings in Winnipeg.
                              * Argonauts are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five meetings.
                              * Under is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings in Winnipeg.

                              CONSENSUS:
55 percent of bets are on Toronto -5. 53.5 percent of bets are on Over 53.5
