    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Major league batting average when bases are loaded? .212, not very good.

-- Adrian Beltre got his 2,500th hit last night; he'll be a Hall of Famer.

-- Jonathan Quick played the majority of the postseason with a wrist injury that required surgery on Tuesday; hockey players are tough.

-- CBS added former referee Mike Carey to its Thursday night NFL announcing team, to explain rules and all that. He'll only be good if he is outspoken.

-- Padres 7, Giants 2-- San Diego is 26-4 if it scores 4+ runs, 8-40 if it doesnn't.

-- Dodgers 2, Royals 0-- Royals scored ten runs in their last six games. Dodgers have made up 6.5 games in 16 days, are just three games behind the Giants.

Late Night Updates: Washington won 4-2 in 16 innings at Miller Park; homer by Ryan Zimmerman was the game-winner.........Arizona beat the Indians 9-8 in the 14th inning, in a game that ended around 3:10am. Jason Kipnis was thrown out trying for an inside-the-park home run in extra innings.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) Vanderbilt has never won a national championship in any men’s sport; would be cool to see them win the baseball title. You’d think that in all these years, they would’ve won one in some obscure sport somewhere, but no. Virginia evened the finals 1-1 last night; winner-take-all game is tonight in Omaha.

    12) Monday night at Wrigley, Cincinnati catcher Devin Mesoraco hit a home run, walked twice and was hit by a pitch twice; no one in the last 100 years had done all that in the same game.

    11) Arizona TV analyst Bob Brenly seems like a great guy, is normally very pleasant on air, but he was thrashing umpire CB Bucknor over the weekend for being a lousy umpire, not the first person to express that opinion. “How does he still have a job?” is pretty serious criticism, coming from a TV booth.

    10) Kid named Dario Saric is a 6-10 forward who was expected to be a top 10 pick in the NBA Draft, but he recently signed a deal to play in Europe for two more years, so what NBA team will be patient enough to draft him and wait until he gets here? “Mr Saric, Coach Popovich is on line 2.”

    9) Saw Charlotte Hornets new baseball caps the other day, with new Hornets’ logo; pretty sharp. Teal and purple is a good color combo.

    8) Want to feel old? This fall Steve Alford will start his 24th season as a college head coach. I did a double take when I read that.

    7) Read where some people think Jabari Parker tanked his workout with Cleveland, because he doesn’t want to play there. My question is this: if you’re another NBA team, do you want a guy who would do something like that? I want competitive guys, gym rats who will bust their butt, no matter what. Guys who tank workouts to manipulate the system don’t appeal to me.

    6) In Tyson Ross’ last four starts, Padres were outscored by a combined 10-0 in the first five innings; hard to win if your team never scores a run for you.

    5) Chicago Bears’ coach Marc Trestman won two Grey Cups while coaching the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL. CFL kicks off this week; we’ll have a writeup on every game on the NBA page of this site, starting in Week 3.

    4) Steak ‘n Shake has 25 different milkshake flavors; someone needs to put a Steak ‘n Shake in Albany, for sure. Surefire money maker.

    3) Only 39 days until the NFL’s first preseason game, Giants-Bills in Canton, at the Hall of Fame.

    2) Remember the Pontiac Silverdome, where the Detroit Lions used to play? They’re wrecking the place; over $500,000 was raised last week selling off stuff that was in the dome. Someone got themselves some cool souvenirs.

    1) If he stays with the Knicks, Carmelo Anthony can earn an average of $25,827,161 per season over five years; if he leaves, he can get an average of $23,974,343 over four years. Fly in ointment is the Knicks do not want to pay him that maximum amount, which is why he will probably leave.

CFL season betting preview: How to bet the West Division

The 2014 CFL season will kick off on Thursday night in Winnipeg as the Blue Bombers host the Argos. There will be nine teams competing for the ultimate prize this year, as Ottawa has re-joined the fold. The B.C. Lions are currently favored to hoist the Grey Cup, with Saskatchewan and Calgary not far behind.

Here’s a look at how the West Division teams stack up entering the new campaign.

      West Division

      Calgary Stampeders (2013: 14-4 SU, 11-6-1 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +200
Odds to win Grey Cup: +404

      Why to bet the Stampeders:
Calgary has two of the league’s best (some would say backup) quarterbacks in Drew Tate and Bo Levi Mitchell. Who will get the starting nod remains to be seen, but it’s a nice problem to have in the CFL, where durability tends to be an issue. With former Most Outstanding Player winner Jon Cornish in the backfield, neither Tate or Mitchell will have to shoulder the entire load.

Why not to bet the Stampeders: Has the window closed on the Stampeders? It seemed as if they peaked two years ago, when they reached the Grey Cup in Toronto. While they were terrific in the regular season a year ago, the playoffs were a different story.

      Grey Cup outlook:
Good. However, they’re going to need the offense to hum under the guidance of Tate or Mitchell.

      Saskatchewan Roughriders (2013: 11-7 SU, 8-9-1 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +200
Odds to win Grey Cup: +397

      Why to bet the Roughriders:
Darian Durant is back under centre, giving the Riders some continuity on offense. They’ve got plenty of depth all over the field, which is a good thing given some of the offseason departures. Don’t sleep on the Riders defense either, one of the most underrated units in the league.

Why not to bet the Roughriders:
Kory Sheets and Weston Dressler will both be trying out south of the border this Summer, leaving a pair of substantial voids in the Riders offense. While both could return, that wouldn’t be likely to happen until Labour Day.

      Grey Cup outlook:
Not as good as the odds indicate. Could a letdown be in order after the Riders won the Grey Cup in their own backyard last year?

      B.C. Lions (2013: 11-7 SU, 9-9 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +180
Odds to win Grey Cup: +323

      Why to bet the Lions:
The Grey Cup host has ultimately hoisted the trophy in each of the last two years, and it’s the Lions turn this Fall. The sky is the limit for a team that’s loaded with stars on both sides of the football. The addition of QB Kevin Glenn gives the Lions a nice veteran presence behind Travis Lulay.

Why not to bet the Lions:
The Lions offensive line is young and inexperienced. It won’t matter who is taking the snaps if the line can’t protect. We’ve seen this story play out before, with the Lions receiving plenty of hype prior to the start of the season, only to disappoint. We’ll see if that holds true this year.

      Grey Cup outlook:
Excellent. On paper, the Lions are the favorite for good reason. The added motivation of hosting the Grey Cup should serve them well.

      Edmonton Eskimos (2013: 4-14 SU, 8-10 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +500
Odds to win Grey Cup: +1000

      Why to bet the Eskimos:
Last season was a rebuilding year, plain and simple. Expectations aren’t all that high this year either, but the potential is there for the Esks to make a move. Mike Reilly has cemented his role as the team’s starting QB. The addition of former Argos defensive coordinator Chris Jones, not to mention CB Patrick Watkins bolsters an already promising defensive corps.

Why not to bet the Eskimos:
Make no mistake, the Esks are still in rebuild mode. In a tough West Division, they’re unlikely to contend, but would look at six or seven wins as a major positive moving forward. If Reilly can’t stay healthy, the offense could be in serious trouble.

      Grey Cup outlook:
Poor. The Eskimos will be a fun team to watch, and should make positive strides, but shouldn’t be involved in too many Grey Cup conversations.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2013: 3-15 SU, 5-12-1 ATS)

      Odds to win division: +1000
Odds to win Grey Cup: +1200

Why to bet the Blue Bombers:
New head coach Mike O’Shea should provide a breath of fresh air to a struggling Blue Bombers franchise. After ranking last in both scoring offense and defense a year ago, there’s nowhere to go but up for the Bombers. QB Drew Willy takes over the offense and the move should pay dividends in short order.

Why not to bet the Blue Bombers: Outside of O’Shea and Willy, there are few reasons for optimism – this year at least. The Bombers are in a similar position to that of the Eskimos last year. They know the direction they’re headed in, but not quite sure how to get there. We’ll see plenty of growing pains again in 2014.

      Grey Cup outlook:
Poor. Unless O’Shea is able to pull off a miracle in his first year in Winnipeg, the Bombers will likely be looking at a five or six win season.

                Wednesday, June 25

Dodgers' SS Hanley Ramirez, probable Wednesday

Ramirez is dealing with shoulder irritation and did not play on Tuesday however he is expected to be in the lineup on Wednesday against the Royals.

Blue Jays' RF Jose Bautista, questionable Wednesday

Bautista has a Grade 1 hamstring strain and has missed the last two games. He is questionable to return on Wednesday against the Yankees.

Plenty of runs last night, but did that mean overs?

There were plenty of runs scored on the diamond in Tuesday's Major League action, with teams crossing the plate a staggering 150 times, making it a good night if you betting over game totals.

Teams went 11-4 over/under in 15 games last night, a success rate of neatly 74 percent. Much better than the season average for overs, which is just over 50 percent.

What trend came through big time Tuesday night?

Another night of Major League Baseball action and another night of success for underdogs against the runline.

Underdogs went an impressive 11-4 against the runline Tuesday night, hitting at a mark of almost 74 percent. Both home and road dogs did well, going 5-2 and 6-2 respectively.

Dogs have been one of the most solid bets in baseball all year, coming in at almost a 62 percent success rate for the season.

                Price trade speculation continues

David Price admits he is not immune to the speculation. It's beginning to affect his mood, but not his preparations.

The left-hander has been the source of increasing trade speculation as the Tampa Bay Rays' season sinks into morass and each day brings the 28-year-old closer to arbitration eligibility this offseason and free agency after 2015. The media hum grew louder on Monday as ESPN's Buster Olney proclaimed the "climate" primed for the club to deal the 2012 American League Cy Young Award-winner "right now."

Price, who is 5-7 with a 3.81 ERA this season, is scheduled to start on Wednesday in the conclusion of a three-game set against Pittsburgh and has worked in front of a bank of opposing scouts in recent outings. He's impressed, striking out at least 10 in four consecutive starts, and he leads the majors with 133 strikeouts while walking just 13.

Price is set to earn $14 million this season and would expect a huge increase through arbitration next season. He deflected a question about whether Wednesday could be his last start at Tropicana Field, saying he thought he would have been traded in the offseason. But he admitted to thinking about things.

"That's why I've been in a bad mood the last week and a half," he said.

Pirates LF Marte could miss time after collision at second base

Pittsburgh left fielder Starling Marte underwent a CT scan on Tuesday night after complaining of "concussion-like symptoms" following a second-base

                collision at Tropicana Field.

Results were not immediately available and it is unknown how much time the 25-year-old could miss. Stringent Major League Baseball concussion protocols make a seven-day

disabled list stint available and dictate that a player cannot participate in baseball activities until symptom-free for three days.

Marte's helmeted head struck the knee of Rays second baseman Sean Rodriguez violently as he was tagged out trying to steal second base in the fifth inning. Marte's head appeared to bow backward slightly and he lay over top of second base for several seconds, though never appeared to lose consciousness. Marte seemed unsteady on his feet after being attended to by manager Clint Hurdle and eventually walked off the field with assistance.

Wednesday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Lincecum punishes the Padres
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        The Overs Have It

Over was a strong play Tuesday night, with teams combining to go 11-4 O/U. That included a 7-4 defeat by Miami in Philadelphia, improving the Marlins to a major league-best 43-28-6 O/U for the season.

                        Lincecum Loves San Diego

Right-hander Tim Lincecum has had San Diego's number of late and will look to continue that trend Wednesday as the Giants (-129, 7) host the Padres. Lincecum is 5-1 against the moneyline in his last six starts against the Padres, including a 13-strikeout no-hitter last July 13.

                        Hamels' Familiar Foe

Veteran lefty Cole Hamels looks to improve his standing against his most familiar opponent Thursday as he leads the Philadelphia Phillies against visiting Miami. Hamels has racked up 198 innings against the Marlins - more than any other club - and is 9-12 with a 3.18 ERA lifetime.

                        Pitching Notes

                        * Consider Washington's Stephen Strasburg a strong Over candidate as he and the Nationals (-131, 7.5) face Marco Estrada and the host Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. Strasburg is tied for second in the majors among starters with 11 Overs, and is 4-1 O/U over his last five outings.

                        * St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright is back to being his usual stingy self as he prepares to lead the Cardinals against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. Wainwright is 0-2-1 O/U and has allowed just three runs in three starts since getting tagged for seven in a one-sided loss to San Francisco.

                        Hitting Notes

                        * The Colorado Rockies will try to take better advantage of first baseman Justin Morneau's hot streak as they entertain St. Louis (-110) on Wednesday. Morneau has 13 RBIs over his past five games, but the Rockies are 1-4 SU in that span.

                        * Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is hitting .348 with six homers, five steals and 18 RBIs in 66 June at-bats. The Angels are 12-8 SU and 10-8-2 O/U for the month; they tangle with visiting Minnesota on Thursday.

                        Totals Streak

Colorado Rockies (4-1-1 O/U): Colorado has been full value on the Over tip the past week, surpassing double-digit totals three times while earning a push in another. The Rockies are a robust 42-29-6 O/U for the year despite facing the highest totals in the league.

                        Prop of the Day

Bettors should consider taking extra innings (+725) between the Oakland Athletics and the host New York Mets. The Athletics have played the most extra inning games in the majors at 13 - going 8-5 in those contests - while the Mets are tied for third with 11 extra-inning games to their credit.

                        Injury Notes

                        * The San Francisco Giants will place outfielder Angel Pagan on the 15-day disabled list with a back injury. The Giants are 5-7 SU, 6-6 O/U and -419 units for the season with Pagan out of the lineup.

                        * Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Mark Trumbo will begin a base-running program later this week as he continues his recovery from a foot injury. Trumbo has appeared in just 21 games with the Diamondbacks, who are 4-17 SU and 13-7-1 O/U in those contests.

                        Weather Watch

                        * Wind at Wrigley Field will blow in from center field at 7 mph for Wednesday's tilt between the host Cubs (+115) and the Cincinnati Reds. Teams averaged 7.7 runs and two homers while batting a collective .246 in 10 games under similar conditions in 2013 - well below stadium averages.

                        * Fans at AT&T Park will be treated to winds blowing out to center field at 14 mph for Thursday's game between the Giants and the Reds. That friendly breeze didn't help San Francisco much last season; it averaged just 3.33 runs in 30 games with the wind blowing out to center at between 10-20 mph.

                        Umpire Note of the Day

Tampa Bay is 7-0 in umpire Lance Barksdale's last seven games behind home plate. Barksdale will work the balls and strikes Wednesday afternoon when the Rays host Pittsburgh.
