Calgary (6-1 SU, 5-2 ATS) at Ottawa (1-6 SU, 2-5 ATS)
      Point-spread: Calgary -8
      Total: 49

      Game Overview

The Stampeders have been stomping their way through the league by outscoring their opponents by a combined 77 points in their first seven games. They are averaging 27.3 PPG behind a bruising running game and their defense has been the stingiest in the league by allowing just 16.3 PPG. Jock Sanders has been a force on special teams with 617 return yards on the year.

Things have gone pretty much as expected for the expansion RedBlacks with a 1-6 SU start, but they have looked especially bad against the teams from the West. Just two weeks ago they were more than doubled-up in a 38-17 loss to Calgary after getting torched by Stamps’ quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell for 289 passing yards and three scoring strikes.

      Betting Trends

Calgary easily covered the 14-point spread at home in that first meeting and the total went OVER the 49-point number. The total has stayed UNDER in five of the Stampeders first seven games this season and it has gone OVER in three of Ottawa’s last four games.

Saskatchewan (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) at British Columbia (5-3 SU, 5-3 ATS)
      Point-spread: BC -3 ½
      Total: 52

      Game Overview

Do not look now, but the defending Grey Cup Champs are building-up a head of steam heading into this critical matchup in the West Division title race. The Roughriders have won their last four games by a combined score of 114-51 and they have not allowed more than 17 points in any of the four contests.

BC has won its last three games including an impressive 25-24 victory over Calgary as a four-point underdog on the road to start this run. Quarterback Travis Lulay is close to 100 percent after missing the first six games with a shoulder injury, but so far Kevin Glenn has been able to hold onto the starting job. He teamed up with Emmanuel Arceneaux for a 53-yard scoring strike this past Sunday to seal the win over Toronto.

      Betting Trends

The Lions beat Saskatchewan 26-13 on the road in mid-July as five-point underdogs to improve to 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings. The total has stayed UNDER in the last five meetings in BC and overall it has stayed UNDER in 11 of the last 12 games between the two division rivals.

Game of the Day: CFL Doubleheader
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Stampeders at Ottawa Redblacks (+9, 48)

The Ottawa Redblacks aim to halt their four-game losing skid when they host the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday. The Stampeders boast arguably the best defense in the league, surrendering fewer than 17 points per contest, which is concerning for a Redblacks' offense that has not scored more than 17 points since Week 5. Calgary is 3-0 on the road and 5-0 against East Division opponents.

The Stampeders defeated Ottawa 38-17 in Calgary in Week 7, when Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns. The Redblacks surrender a league-worst average of 300 passing yards, so Mitchell could be in for another strong game. Ottawa was limited to 38 rushing yards against Calgary’s defense, which averages a league-low 81.1 rushing yards allowed.

        TV: 3 p.m. ET, TSN

LINE HISTORY: The majority of books opened the Redblacks as 9-point home dogs, which is where they currently remain. The total opened and presently sits at 48.

INJURY REPORT: Stampeders - OL Brander Craighead (Questionable, ankle), RB Matt Walter (Questionable, concussion), LS Randy Chevrier (Questionable, undisclosed), RB Jon Cornish (Probable, concussion). Redblacks - DL Chris McCoy (Questionable, wrist), DB Jovon Johnson (Probable, bicep).

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (6-1): Star running back Jon Cornish could return to the lineup Sunday for his first action since suffering a concussion in Week 1. Calgary has fared well in the running game without Cornish, averaging 115.1 rushing yards. The Stampeders will likely be without receiver Jeff Fuller, who dislocated his shoulder, and defensive lineman Micah Johnson, who suffered a knee injury, for the foreseeable future.

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (1-6): Jovon Johnson returned to practice this week and could rejoin Ottawa’s defense sooner than expected after being placed on the six-game injured list. Quarterback Henry Burris is struggling with his lowest completion percentage (58.9) since 2006, when he was a member of the Stampeders. Defensive back Antoine Pruneau has recorded 18 of his 21 tackles in the last two games.

        TRENDS:

        * Stampeders are 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games.
        * Redblacks are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall.
        * Under is 10-1 in Calgary's last 11 road games.
        * Under is 9-2 in Calgary's last 11 games overall.

CONSENSUS: 56 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the visiting Stampeders.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at BC Lions (-3, 50.5)

Two of the hottest teams in the CFL meet Sunday when the BC Lions host the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Saskatchewan is riding a four-game winning streak, while BC has won its last three. The Lions defeated the host Roughriders in Week 3 and Saskatchewan looks to return the favour as the Lions enter their bye week.

Kevin Glenn has BC’s offense humming with 94 points in three games, but will be in tough against a Roughriders' defense that has not allowed more than 17 points in a contest since a Week 4 bye. Saskatchewan leads the league in sacks with 29 thanks to 12 from John Chick, and the quarterback pressure has led to nine interceptions for the Roughriders - bad news for Glenn, who has already tossed 11. Saskatchewan’s offense has been most effective on the ground, averaging 131.9 rushing yards.

        TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN

LINE HISTORY: The majority of books opened the Lions as 3-point home faves, and after slight movement in both directions the line is presently back where it opened. The total opened 51 but has slightly gone down to 50.5.

INJURY REPORT: Roughriders - DB Marshay Green (Questionable, undisclosed), Dan DePalma (Questionable, undisclosed). Lions - LB Alex Hoffman-Ellis (Questionable, undisclosed), T Andre Ramsey (Questionable, ankle), RB Andrew Harris (Questionable, ankle), T Jermarcus Hardrick (Questionable, knee), DB Josh Johnson (Questionable, knee), CB Dante Marsh (Questionable, hamstring).

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (3-5): Chick was named defensive player of the week after recording three sacks in a win over the Montreal Alouettes, while receiver Rob Bagg was named Canadian player of the week. Jerome Messam is the latest running back to take the lead for Saskatchewan, rushing for 180 yards over the last two games. The Roughriders signed kicker Justin Palardy, putting pressure on Chris Milo, who is 15-for-21 on field goal attempts.

ABOUT THE LIONS (6-1): Stefan Logan earned offensive player of the week honours after recording a career-high 145 rushing yards in a road victory against the Toronto Argonauts, while Tim Brown earned special teams player of the week with 249 combined return yards. Andrew Harris is expected to return to the lineup Sunday, bumping Logan back to backup and kick-return duties with Brown. Travis Lulay took a few snaps against Toronto as he is eased back into action following shoulder surgery.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 8-2 in Roughriders last 10 games versus the West.
        * Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.
        * Under is 6-2 in Lions last eight games overall.
        * Roughriders are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings in BC.

CONSENSUS: 55 percent of wagers on Consensus are backing the Lions.

          • CFL Betting Recap - Week 9

            August 25, 2014

            League Betting Notes

-- Favorites went 3-1 straight up in Week 9
-- Favorites went 3-1 ATS in Week 9
            -- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 SU record in Week 9
            -- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 ATS record in Week 9
-- The 'under' went 3-1 in Week 9

            Team Betting Notes

-- Calgary (7-1) annihilated expansion Ottawa (1-7), as the West continues to dominate the East. First-place Calgary has won three straight, and covered each contest.

-- Edmonton (7-1) kept pace with their provincial rivals by hammering Toronto (3-6) by a 41-27 score. The Esks have won three in a row since losing to Calgary July 24. While they have an impressive straight-up record, they're still just 2-2 ATS over the past four, and 5-2 ATS overall. A rematch with Calgary looms Sept. 1 on the road, with the second game of a home-and-home Sept. 6 in Edmonton.

-- Montreal (1-7) continues to fight hard, but they suffered another loss Friday in Winnipeg (6-3). The Alouettes have improved since a couple of lopsided losses July 19-Aug. 1 when they lost by an average of 31.0 points per game. Over their past three losses, they have fallen by an average of just 7.8 points per game. Still, a loss is a loss. They're also 1-5 ATS over the past six.

-- The Blue Bombers put the skids on a two-game SU/ATS losing streak, and they're now 6-3 ATS overall. They 'over' and 'under' has alternated over each of their past five, so no helpful trend there. Next up is a key home-and-home series with Saskatchewan (6-2).

-- The Roughriders lost QB Darian Durant (finger) to a finger injury at halftime, so former Pitt QB Tino Sunseri was forced into action. He actually rallied the defending champs to a win at BCLions (5-4). Saskatchewan has won five straight games, and they're 4-1 ATS during the span.

-- Saskatchewan has also had the 'under' cash in five of the past six games. In their previous meeting with Winnipeg, the under hit back on Aug. 7.

              • CFL Betting Notes - Week 10

                August 26, 2014

The CFL will close the first-half of its 2014 regular season this upcoming Labor Day Holiday Weekend and all indications continue to point to a league of “haves” (the West Division) and “have nots” (the East Division).

Winnipeg got things going for the West last week with a 24-16 victory over Montreal as a 7 ½-point home favorite on Friday night. The total stayed UNDER the closing 49 ½-point line.

Saturday’s CFL double-header kicked things off with Edmonton almost doubling-up Toronto 41-27 as a seven-point favorite at home. This time the total went well OVER the 49 ½-point line. Calgary rolled over Ottawa 32-7 in the nightcap to easily cover as an 8 ½-point road favorite with the total staying UNDER the 48-point line.

This past Sunday in the only divisional matchup on the slate, Saskatchewan outlasted British Columbia 20-16 as a 2 ½-point road underdog. The total in that game stayed UNDER the 50 ½-point closing line.

                Friday, Aug. 29

Ottawa (1-7 SU, 2-6 ATS) at Montreal (1-7 SU, 2-6 ATS)
                Point-spread: Montreal -5 ½
                Total: 47

                Game Overview

The good news for the expansion RedBlacks is that they have a decent shot at doubling their win total on the year in their first meeting this season against Montreal. Ottawa has held their own against the other two teams they faced from the East with a Week 3 victory over Toronto (18-17) as a one-point home underdog and a 10-point loss to Hamilton as a 6 ½-point road underdog in Week 4.

The Alouettes continue to sink deeper and deeper into a hole they probably will not be able to climb out of. Their offense is ranked last in the CFL in scoring with an average of 15.6 points a game and they have major issues at the quarterback position. Montreal’s defense has allowed 30 or more points four times during its current six-game losing streak.

                Betting Trends

Ottawa is 1-4 against the spread in its last five games and 0-4 ATS in four road games this year. Montreal is 5-11 ATS in its last 16 home games and total has stayed UNDER in its last five division games.

                Sunday, Aug. 31

Winnipeg (6-3 SU, 6-3 ATS) at Saskatchewan (6-2 SU, 5-3 ATS)
                Point-spread: Saskatchewan -5 ½
                Total: 47

                Game Overview

The Blue Bombers snapped a two-game skid both SU and ATS with last week’s win. Drew Willy struggled at quarterback by going 14-for-23 for 200 yards and an interception, but he still got the job done with a 16-point fourth quarter rally to steal the win. Nic Grigsby turned in a solid performance running the ball with 73 yards on 10 carries.

Saskatchewan has now gone 5-0 SU (4-1 ATS) since stumbling out of the gate with a 1-2 start both SU and ATS. Quarterback Darian Durant’s numbers are nothing to write home about with a 60.1 percent completion rate and five interceptions vs. seven touchdown throws, but the Roughriders’ defense has held firm; allowing an average of 18.9 PPG. Durant missed the second half of Sunday’s game against BC with a finger injury and so far his status for this Sunday is unknown.

                Betting Trends

The Roughriders won the first meeting this season 23-17 as three-point road favorites and they hold a 6-1 SU edge (5-2 ATS) in the last seven meetings. The total in this series has stayed UNDER in three of the last four games.

                Monday, Sept. 1

Toronto (3-6 SU, 3-6 ATS) at Hamilton (1-6 SU, 3-4 ATS)
                Point-spread: Toronto -1
                Total: 50 ½

                Game Overview

Toronto has just three SU victories on the year, but it can open-up a three-game lead in the East Division with a win next Monday. Quarterback Ricky Ray continues to lead the CFL in total passing yards with 2,442 and he has a league-high 15 touchdown throws, but the Argonauts’ downfall has been a defense that is giving-up 27.7 PPG.

The Tiger-Cats have been able to keep the majority of their games relatively close, but they have not played with the consistency needed to turn these losses into wins partially due to multiple injuries at the quarterback position. They will try and snap a three-game skid both SU and ATS which includes a 10-point loss to Calgary at home as 2 ½-point underdogs before last week’s bye.

                Betting Trends

The Tiger-Cats have won the last three meetings both SU and ATS after dropping their previous four games to Toronto both ways dating back to the 2012 regular season. The total in this series has gone OVER in six of the last eight meetings.

Edmonton (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) at Calgary (7-1 SU, 6-2 ATS)
                Point-spread: Calgary -4 ½
                Total: 50 ½

                Game Overview

The surprising Eskimos continue to keep pace with Calgary in the West Division title race with a three-game SU winning streak (2-1 ATS). They have scored 26 points or more in seven of their eight games this year and their defense is holding teams to an average of 17.8 PPG. Slotback Adarius Bowman is leading the CFL in receiving yards with 619.

Calgary’s numbers are even more impressive with an offense that is averaging 27.9 PPG complementing a defense that is allowing an average of 15.1 points, which is tops in the CFL. Bo Levi Mitchell has done a good job leading the offense at quarterback. He has thrown for 1,958 yards and 12 touchdowns against just four interceptions.

                Betting Trends

The Stampeders grinded-out the early edge in this season’s series with a 26-22 victory in late July as 1 ½-point road favorites. The total stayed UNDER the 49 ½-point closing line and it has now stayed UNDER in the last three meetings. Calgary is 9-1 SU in the last 10 meetings with a 7-3 edge ATS.

Game of the Day: Redblacks at Alouettes
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Redblacks at Montreal Alouettes (-6, 46)

Something has to give when the Montreal Alouettes host the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday. The Redblacks are mired in a five-game losing streak and the only team in the league with a longer streak of futility is the Alouettes, who have lost six in a row. Despite these slides, both teams still have a realistic shot at the playoffs in the weak East Division.

Montreal could finally have some stability at quarterback after Jonathan Crompton stepped in with a 266-yard performance against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but Crompton also threw three interceptions and will need to be more accurate if he hopes to hang on to the job. Ottawa’s offense has been even worse than the Alouettes’, recording 15 points over its last two games and managing 46 over its last four. Redblacks quarterback Henry Burris has five touchdown tosses in 2014, putting him on pace for his lowest total as a starter.

                  TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN

LINE HISTORY: The LV Superbook opened the Als as 5.5-point home favorites. They moved to -6.5 before dropping down to -6. The total opened at 47 and has dropped to 46.

INJURY REPORT: Redblacks - DB Jovon Johnson (Questionable, bicep). Alouettes - Chad Johnson (Probably, concussion), Marc-Oliver Brouillette (Questionable, upper body).

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (1-7): Ottawa lost backup quarterback Thomas DeMarco to a season-ending ACL injury when DeMarco replaced Burris in the fourth quarter in Week 9. Rookie Antoine Pruneau is quickly becoming the most exciting Redblacks player with 24 tackles in three contests as a starter and a pass deflection that led to an interception touchdown last week. Chevon Walker is tied for third in the league with 421 rushing yards.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-7): Alex Brink will back up Crompton while Troy Smith remains on the six-game injured list. Brandon Whitaker is second in the league with 431 rushing yards. John Bowman leads the team with seven sacks but has just two in four games since Montreal’s Week 5 bye week.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Under is 5-0 in Alouettes last five vs. East.
                  * RedBlacks are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
                  * Alouettes are 0-4 ATS in their last four Friday games.
                  * Under is 10-2 in Alouettes last 12 games overall.

CONSENSUS: According to Consensus, 56 percent of wagers are on the Alouettes.

                          • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Kevin Durant will sign a deal with Nike that will play him around $27M a year for ten years to wear Nike gear, more money than the Thunder pays him.

-- Indians' team ERA for August before Sunday's game was 2.40.

-- Patriots traded backup QB Ryan Mallett to Houston, so if you drafted Texans' QB Ryan Fitzpatrick on your fantasy team, go pick Mallett up.

-- Tennessee 38, Utah State 7-- Terrific start for young Vols; Utah State ain't bad.

-- Finland 81, Ukraine 76-- Great coaching job; these guys lost by 59 Saturday- it takes onions to bounce back and win a close game the next day.

-- USA 98, Turkey 77-- Turks led by 5 at half; thank god we had Jim Boeheim on the bench to make those critical tactical adjustments at halftime.

                            **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Happy Labor Day, everyone.........

                            13) Had my fantasy football draft Sunday; amazing how late Eli Manning went, like no one thinks he can play anymore. Am guessing he does better this year.

                            12) I watch these NASCAR races and the cynic in me thinks the caution flags near the end of the race are intentional, to create dramatic finishes.

                            11) Maybe its just me, but RGIII is a little young to have a statue of himself outside Baylor's new football stadium, even if he is a big reason why the thing got built. How about waiting until he turns 30 or something.........

                            10) Watching an old Tennessee-Auburn game on SEC Network, just heard Keith Jackson say "they've got to hunker down...." and I smiled.

                            9) Croatia 90, Argentina 85-- Guy playing for Croatia lost six teeth during this game but returned to play later on-- did he used to play hockey?

                            8) Should be noted that Turkey has one NBA player (Omar Asik) on its team and they led Team USA by 5 at the half.

                            7) Surprised that Houston cut Case Keenum after they traded for Ryan Mallett; someone will pick Keenum up- he started eight games last year.

                            6) In last five weeks, Minnesota Timberwolves have sold 500 new season ticket packages, I guess because people are glad they traded for Andrew Wiggins, who is a Canadian. Wolves had lost around 1,100 of their 7,400 season ticket holders from last year, but have about half of them back now.

                            5) Brewers' farmhand Nathan Orf played all nine positions in a Class A minor league game Sunday; he started at catcher, ended it on the mound.

                            4) As I type this, Indians-Royals are in a rain delay in 10th inning of the Sunday night game in Kansas City; Tribe has a 4:00 home game Monday against Detroit, in another important series. Tough scheduling spot there, but at least Kluber flew home a day early and will be well-rested.

                            3) Oakland traded for Adam Dunn, saving White Sox $1.25M in salary-- Dunn will retire after the season, this is a chance for him to play playoff baseball before he ends a long and interesting career.

                            2) Rough weekend for my A's, who have four weeks left to right the ship and make the playoffs. Baseball is a six-month grind; there are ups and downs, but this is one terrible time for the A's to hit the skids. They head home now, time for some wins.

                            1) Baseball playoffs if they started today:
NL-- Washington-Mil or StL-Dodgers. Wild Card: Giants/Mil or StL
                            AL-- Baltimore-Kansas City-Angels. Wild Card: A's-Detroit
