    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Brewers scored three runs on one wild pitch in Denver; they won 9-4, but you have to see the play on Sports Center- not very professional.

-- Golf might be the only sport where participants are happy when one of their competitors gets healthy. The business of golf benefits when Eldrick Woods is playing, and he will be back on the golf course next weekend.

-- Virginia-Vanderbilt will play best-of-3 final in College World Series.

-- Doug Fister blanked Atlanta for eight innings; Washington is back in first place in the NL East.

-- Howie Kendrick's walk-off double gave the Angels a 3-2 wn over Texas in game where two Rangers were tossed for arguing balls/strikes.

-- Royals won 10 in row, got into first place, then lost their next three. Oy.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: College knowledge from ACC/Pac-12......

    13) We mentioned last week how only two of LY’s top nine SEC passers are back in school this year; Pac-12 is a different story, with eight of LY’s top nine passers back for another year. Pac-12 games figure to be pretty high scoring then, with so much experience back under center.

) USC is just 8-19 vs spread in its last 27 games as a regular season favorite, but they’ve won/covered four of last five bowl games and were favored in all five.

    11) Arizona State is 18-9 under Todd Graham, 13-5 vs spread when favored; they’re +30 in turnovers the last three years, +21 under Graham- they somehow went 6-7 in Dennis Erickson’s last season, despite a +9 turnover ratio.

    10) UCLA is +17 in turnovers in two years under Jim Mora (!9-8); the previous five years, Bruins were -24 in turnovers, went just 27-37, so he’s done lot of work in a short time in Westwood.

    9) Arizona averaged 228/265 rushing yards/game in Rich Rodriguez’ first two years in Tucson, going 8-5 both years; the previous five years, Wildcats were 32-31, running ball for just 124.2 yards/game, as they tried to spread field and throw ball a lot, so RichRod has really made Arizona more balanced.

    8) NC State’s first four games this season: Georgia Southern/Old Dominion/@ South Florida/Presbyterian. Not a lot there. Then they play Florida State/@ Clemson on consecutive Saturdays; what genius made this schedule?

    7) North Carolina averaged 40.6/32.7 ppg in Larry Fedora’s first two seasons in Chapel Hill, going 15-10. In their previous five seasons, Tar Heels went 35-29 and didn't average more than 28 ppg in any one of those five seasons.

    6) Virginia Tech’s rushing yards/game over the last five years, starting with 2009: 208-199-187-146-120. Down four years in a row. Hokies have four starters back on OL this season, so that rushing average should go up a decent amount this fall.

    5) Hard to believe Miami Hurricanes haven’t won a bowl game since 2006 and that was 21-20 over Nevada in a bowl game in Boise. Seeing how Hurricanes signed up two-time transfer QB Jake Heaps this week, they may have QB issues.

    4) Over last three seasons, Virginia (7-17), Maryland (6-18) had two worst records in ACC conference games. With Terps gone to the Big 14, there is lot of pressure on Virginia coach London to move up in the standings, in this his fifth year with the Cavaliers. Not a lot of patience in the sports world these days.

    3) Florida State won its last five bowl games, despite being underdog in three of them- dogs covered four of those five games.

    2) Duke scored 34-48 points in bowl games the last two years but lost both games, 48-34/52-48. Blue Devils averaged 31.5/32.8 ppg the last two seasons, as coach Cutcliffe once again proves to be an offensive wizard.

    1) With so many bowl games now, any coach who misses a bowl, unless he’s on probation, his job is going to be in jeopardy. Then again, if you’re on probation, that alone should put you on the hot seat. Not easy being a coach these days.

Gaughan wins in thrilling finish at Road America

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. -- Brendan Gaughan survived two early off-track excursions and a race in which much of the second half was contested in rain as cars rode on wet-weather tires to win Saturday's Gardner Denver 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America.

It was the third time in NASCAR history -- all on road courses and all on the NNS circuit -- that a race has been run in rain. The two others were in Montreal in 2008 and 2010, also on a road course (Circuit Gilles Villeneuve).

Racing in the rain ignited something in Gaughan that helped him overcome and forget his early misfortune and go on to earn his first win on the Nationwide circuit in 98 starts (he also has eight career wins in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series).

"I love racing in the rain; it's fun," said Gaughan, who was in the 2010 Montreal race and has driven in rain several times in other series. "And when you're good at it, it makes it even more fun.

"I haven't smelled blood in a long time," he said. "That's something I've been lacking lately: that killer attitude. When it started to rain, even without the wiper blade (was broken), I started to smell blood and said, 'I'm coming.'

"It's fun to watch guys who haven't done it in the rain. They don't understand the rain line and, fortunately for me, I did."

Gaughan passed Chase Elliott for the lead on Lap 51 and held on for the two remaining laps to win.

Gaughan beat runner-up Alex Tagliani by .820 seconds in a green-white-checkered finish that took the race to 53 laps, three more than the scheduled 50. It appeared it would be Tagliani's race to win, as he was leading in the closing laps, but he ran out of fuel on Lap 49.

Just seconds before, a caution flag was thrown when Justin Marks also ran out of fuel. Just past the pit entrance when his car stopped, Tagliani was able to roll his car down the sloping front stretch. His crew pushed him into his pit stall, he took on fuel and switched from rain tires back to slicks and proceeded to roar through the field, restarting 23rd and ending up second three extra laps later.

Such a tough defeat might be hard for some drivers to swallow, but Tagliani took the loss in stride.

"It was pretty intense," Tagliani said. "The wet was tricky, but obviously we were good. Maybe I threw a bad spell on myself because I said it was impossible that I was going to win this race, like something's going to happen, and then on the white flag, something happened (ran out of gas).

"It's what it is. It's not in the cards. You have to be quick, you have to have a good car and it has to be in the cards. And if it's not, you just have to take whatever comes to you."

Tagliani came into the race hoping to be the fourth driver to win from the pole in the last five NNS races at Road America, but he came up one spot short.

The race was put under caution on Lap 25 and NASCAR mandated all cars switch to wet-weather tires two laps later. They remained on rain tires until the final four laps, when teams had the option to switch back to slicks after Marks brought out the caution.

Kevin O'Connell finished third, followed by Chase Elliott and J.J. Yeley.

Sixth through 10th were Jeremy Clements, Andy Lally, Landon Cassill, Elliott Sadler and Mike Bliss.

      NOTES:
After the race, Cassill hopped a plane to the West Coast to be in Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Sonoma Raceway.

... Regan Smith, who finished 13th, retained his lead in the NNS points standings. Elliott Sadler (finished ninth) is 10 points behind Smith, while Chase Elliott remains in third place (11 points back). The only drivers in the top 10 to make upward movement in points were Brian Scott (sixth to fifth) and Cassill (11th to 10th).

                    Danks horrendously poor against Twins

The Chicago White Sox could possibly be sending the worst pitcher to the mound when they play the Minnesota Twins Sunday. John Danks has steered the White Sox to s 3-13 record in his last 16 starts against the Twins, including seven straight loses.

Danks has given up an average of just over seven hits per game and has only three times allowed less than six hits. Danks has also given up an average of four runs to the Twins and have only allowed less than three runs twice.

Visiting mounds have been kind to Keuchel

Dallas Keuchel has become the ace of the Houston Astros staff and he has been able to elevate the team on the road. Through Keuchel's seven road starts this season, the Astros are 6-1.

Keuchel has only allowed an average of 1.5 runs per game on the road this season. Interestingly enough though, the under has only hit on two of those outings.

The Astros and Keuchel will be in Tampa Bay Sunday.

Santana falling off a cliff for Braves

The Atlanta Braves thought they got the steal of the offseason with Ervin Santana, but his play has completely fallen off. Since May 1, Santana is 2-4 and the Braves are 2-7 with him on the mound.

Santana has allowed three or more runs seven times and has seen his ERA more than double over that span.

Dickey's road record needs to be seen to be believed

The Toronto Blue Jays will be sending R.A. Dickey to the mound at the Great American Ball Park Sunday. The Jays should be weary as Dickey is led the club to a 1-5 record on the road this season.

Though Dickey has been giving up a solid five hits per game on the road, he has been giving up almost four runs per game.

                      Tanaka Means Quality

New York Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka has an impressive streak going as he prepares to face the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Tanaka has opened his career with 14 consecutive quality starts, racking up five double-digit strikeout efforts over that span.

                      Pitching Notes

                      * Detroit Tigers fireballer Max Scherzer will look to bounce back from his worst start of the season Sunday as he squares off against host Cleveland.
