    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- San Diego Padres are now 24-4 when they score 4+ runs, 8-38 when they score less than four. Friars scored three in ninth to beat the Dodgers 6-5 Friday.

    – Braves’ pitcher Gavin Floyd fractured his elbow pitching Thursday night. Sad to see; we wish him well.

    – Never saw this before, that I can remember: Dave Chappelle was on David Letterman’s show and the Tonight Show at the same time Friday.

    – Good bloodlines at the College World Series: Blake Bortles’ brother plays for Ole Miss, CJ Cron’s brother plays 1B for TCU.

    – Good early morning TV this weekend; Irish Open on Golf Channel, with Graeme McDowell in contention.

-- Heady times for the Kansas City Royals, who catch a break by missing Felix Hernandez this weekend with the Mariners in town. Breaks like that help extend winning streaks- they drew 38,000+ for their game last night.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) ESPN.com is ranking the top 50 college basketball coaches this month, a thankless task that will annoy far more than it informs. I’m trying not to be too critical of the list, which also includes 25 coaches who just missed the top 50, but if you don’t have Larry Eustachy/Mark Gottfried in your top 75 (really 76, since Scott Drew/Randy Bennett tied for #50), then what kind of a ranking is it?

Eustachy is a terrific coach who has won at Idaho, Southern Miss, Colorado State and almost got Iowa State to a Final Four. Lets see Jim Boeheim coach at Idaho and win. Gottfried has won at Murray State, Alabama and now at NC State. Like I said, it’s a thankless job, but they should still do better than they are.

    12) Put it this way: there is no way on God’s green earth that Craig Neal (head coach for one year) or Derek Kellogg (what has he done at UMass?) are better coaches than Eustachy. Not even debatable.

    11) 16-year veteran Patrick Mannelly (295 games) is retiring from the Chicago Bears, meaning for the first time this century, the Bears will have a new long snapper. Obscure guy, but a critical position.

    10) CBSSports.com had a great article on new Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams, and how he felt the Big East being on FOX Sports1 instead of ESPN helped sway him to leave Marquette for an ACC cellar dweller in Blacksburg. Williams is apparently also wary of coaching at a school that doesn’t have bigtime football. He is an unusual guy; the article is well worth reading if you like college hoop.

    9) Former Oregon point guard Domini Artis, who had a very good freshman season but fell off the map last year in Eugene, is visiting St John’s this weekend. Artis would be a good get for Steve Lavin, who was also conspicuously absent from ESPN’s List of 76 and he worked there for seven years.

    8) NBA is moving the league logo to the back of players’ jerseys next season, which paves the way for advertising to be added to the front. It happens in Europe, its going to happen here. Just a matter of whether it will be this year or next.

    7) Golden State Warriors hired Alvin Gentry to be Steve Kerr’s top assistant; Warriors are involved in the Kevin Love sweepstakes; they’ll be an interesting team to watch this winter. Kerr is going to coach the Warriors’ team in the Las Vegas Summer League- they usually have the most fans there, so that should be fun.

    6) Cleveland Indians have six walkoff wins this year, with four of the six coming on home runs; four walkoff HRs leads the major leagues.

    5) If the Washington Redskins have to change their name, wouldn’t Hogs be a good option for a new name? Pays homage to the Redskins’ offensive line of the 80’s; they could use a logo similar to what the Arkansas Razorbacks have.

    4) Bill Donovan/Ed Cooley are coaching the U18 national basketball team in Colorado Springs this week; their first game was against Uruguay- they were up by 58 at the half. Doesn't sound too fun to watch.

    3) I’m positive that baseball would be a better game if they got rid of the DH and teams had 27-man rosters. Managers would have more flexibility, the union would have 60 more members; who loses in the deal, other than washed up sluggers who can’t field?

    2) In 2008, 21-year old Sean Doolittle hit 22 HRs in the Oakland farm system as a 1B; he got hurt the next year and returned in 2011 as a relief pitcher. Now he is the A’s closer and a damn good one. Small markets teams can win if they’re clever and think outside the box.

    1) Please stop writing about Johnny Manziel; please???? Let him have his fun, then training camps will open, then preseason games will start, THEN you can write about him. In meantime, use your imagination; find someone else to write about.

Weekend MLB betting cheat sheet: McCarthy burning bettors bad
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend's major league action:

            McCarthy Era a Bad One

Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy will look to reverse a horrible trend Saturday as he and the Diamondbacks welcome the San Francisco Giants. McCarthy enters the weekend ranked last in the majors in value ($-1,252), with Arizona going a woeful 2-13 in his starts so far this season.

            Tanaka Means Quality

New York Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka has an impressive streak going as he prepares to face the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Tanaka has opened his career with 14 consecutive quality starts, racking up five double-digit strikeout efforts over that span.

            Pitching Notes

            * Chicago White Sox righty Andre Rienzo was once the highest-value starter in baseball, but will be looking to halt a personal four-game losing skid Saturday against host Minnesota. Rienzo has been an underdog in all 10 of his starts to date, and is 6-4 against the moneyline in those games.

            * Detroit Tigers fireballer Max Scherzer will look to bounce back from his worst start of the season Sunday as he squares off against host Cleveland. Scherzer, who surrendered 10 runs over 4 1/3 innings last time out, is 8-4 with a 4.75 ERA in 16 career starts versus the Indians.

            Hitting Notes

            * Don't expect a home run barrage with St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright on the mound against Philadelphia Saturday. Members of the Phillies roster have combined for zero home runs in 131 career at-bats against Wainwright, striking out 32 times in the process.

            * Sunday will feature a marquee pitcher-batter matchup as Texas ace Yu Darvish faces Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels. Trout has gotten the better of Darvish to date, batting .290 with four home runs in 31 career at-bats.

            Totals Streak

San Diego Padres (0-5-1 O/U): Sound familiar? The Padres continue to confound oddsmakers, racking up six consecutive games in which they either scored or allowed one or fewer runs. San Diego is far and away the strongest Under bet in the league to date at 23-46-4 O/U.

            Prop of the Day

Bettors may want to consider taking the Houston Astros to score first against Tampa Bay, a prop that pays -110. The Rays are the worst first-inning team in baseball, scoring just 22 times while batting a paltry .194.

            Injury Notes

            * Atlanta Braves hurler Gavin Floyd suffered a fractured elbow Thursday night and is out indefinitely. Floyd was solid in nine starts in his first season with the Braves, going 2-2 with a 2.65 ERA in nine starts; the Braves were 5-4 SU and 3-6 O/U in those contests.

            * Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz (knee) is expected to rejoin the major-league rotation sometime next week. Buchholz is 2-4 with a 7.03 ERA in 10 starts with the Red Sox, who are 4-6 SU and 6-3-1 O/U in those outings.

            * Seattle Mariners DH Corey Hart (hamstring) will start a minor-league rehab assignment this weekend. Hart has been out since mid-May, with the Mariners going 16-14 SU, 8-20-2 O/U and earning 290 units in his absence.

            Weather Watch

            * Fans at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday afternoon will be greeted by wind blowing out to left field at 8 mph. Only one Royals home game last season featured wind blowing out to left - and it resulted in a 1-0 Kansas City victory.

            * Busch Stadium is expected to see wind blowing out to center field at 6 mph for Sunday's game between host St. Louis and Philadelphia. The Cardinals went 7-2 SU while averaging 6.22 runs in nine games under similar conditions a season ago.

                Saturday, June 21

                High total for Orioles-Yankees matinee

The New York Yankees host the Baltimore Orioles Saturday afternoon and the run total for the game is relatively high for the matchup, currently sitting at 9.0.

The Orioles have been a hot under though. They are 2-9 over/under in their last 11 games and are 1-5 over/under in Bud Norris' last six starts against the American League East.

From the Yankees' end, they are 2-7 over/under in their last nine games as a home favorite.

Dodgers' RF Yasiel Puig, doubtful Saturday

Puig has a mild muscle strain in his left hip and is expected to sit out Saturday's game against the Padres.

What trend had a big night on the diamond?
