    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Rough weekend for Giant bullpen, which gave up 11 runs in nine IP in losing three straight to Colorado- they still lead NL West by 6.5 games.

-- Game 5 of NBA Finals was seen on TV in 215 countries in 47 languages.

-- RIP Casey Kasem, one of the all-time great voices-- he was even the voice of Shaggy in the old Scooby Doo cartoons.

-- Orioles have been outscored 50-7 in Ubaldo Jimenez' home starts (0-7).

-- Atlanta Falcons drew a short straw, are on HBO's Hard Knocks this summer.

-- Curtis Granderson was 8th different Met to bat leadoff this season; they've had 16 different leadoff hitters since Jose Reyes left town.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

    13) A belated Happy Birthday to Big Dawg, who turned 29 again this weekend; hope he left some money in Las Vegas for me.

Big Dawg and this website share the same birthday; this site turned 13 years old this week. Thanks to you for reading-- glad you enjoy it.

    12) Congrats to the San Antonio Spurs for winning the NBA title and striking a great blow for team basketball and organization development. They fell behind 22-6 Sunday night, then went on a 50-20 run-- that doesn't happen a lot at that level.

    11) Lebron James made $30M when Apple bought Beats from Dr Dre.

    10) Still looks weird when you see still photos of NHL action and there are two cameras in each net. Provides the league with a great replay system and some great pictures, but its funny that cameras are so close to the action.

    9) In case you wonder about such things, there have been 31 games this season that were decided by 10+ runs; Oakland A's won seven of those 31 games.

    8) Dodgers would be in the playoffs if they started today, but a 15-20 home record is not what they expected to happen.

    7) Washington's Jordan Zimmerman lost 1-0 in St Louis this weekend, but he threw a 76-pitch complete game, which almost never happens- it was an eight-inning complete game because St Louis won, but 76 pitches in eight innings is tremendous.

    6) LSU basketball player Anthony Hickey transfers to Oklahoma State, a good get for Travis Ford, who needs some good news after a rough end to last season.

    5) Fifty years ago this week, the Cardinals-Cubs made a six-player trade, with the Cubs getting Ernie Broglio, a solid starting pitcher whose best days were behind him, while the Cardinals got Lou Brock, who led them to the World Series in three of the next five years. One of the most famous, one-sided trades in baseball history.

    4) Cardinals' .330 batting average with runners in scoring position LY was the best in the last 40 years by any team; last I heard this year, their average with RISP was only .238, which is a big reason why they're 3-5 games behind Milwaukee.

    3) Don't look now, but Kansas City Royals have won seven games in a row, are only 1.5 games of first place in the AL Central.

    2) Rough weekend for American sports, as Spurs won NBA title with only six of its 15 players born in this country, while Martin Kaymer became eighth foreign golfer in the last eleven years to win the US Open.

    1) If the baseball playoffs started Monday morning, they'd look like this:
NL: Atlanta-Milwaukee-San Francisco; Wild Cards: Cards-Dodgers
AL: Toronto-Detroit-Oakland; Wild Cards: Angels-Kansas City

High five: Spurs cruise to another NBA title

SAN ANTONIO -- As it turns out, the expiration date for a dynasty is more flexible than many believed.

Years after the NBA punditry determined that San Antonio was too old to remain contenders for a championship, the Spurs were spry enough to win their fifth title in 15 years, defeating the Miami Heat 104-87 Sunday to win the NBA Finals four games to one.

San Antonio was on the verge of winning the championship last season but lost Games 6 and 7 in Miami, the former after blowing a five-point lead in the final 28 seconds. It was the Heat's second straight title.

"We were so close last year," Spurs guard Tony Parker said. "We wanted to redeem ourselves. This title is the sweetest one."

San Antonio, trailing 22-6 in the first quarter, responded by outscoring Miami 53-20 during a long stretch that extended into the second half.

Forward Kawhi Leonard led the Spurs with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and he was selected the Finals' Most Valuable Player. Leonard, 22, averaged nine points in the first two games but 24 over the next three.

"I had a great group of guys pushing me," Leonard said. "They told me I had to be aggressive every night for us to win the series."

Guard Manu Ginobili added 19 points, and forward Tim Duncan scored 14.

Parker missed his first 10 shots -- he was scoreless late in the third quarter -- but hit his next seven and finished with 16 points. His backup, Patty Mills, scored 17, including 14 in the third quarter.

The Spurs led handily before Parker scored a point, showing something people saw from them all season.

"This is a team," Ginobili said. "That's what makes it so nice."

San Antonio's four victories were by an average of 18 points.

"It was exquisite basketball," Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said of the Spurs. "Ball movement, player movement, unselfish basketball."

Forward LeBron James led Miami with 31 points and 10 rebounds, but once again, he did not receive much help. Center Chris Bosh was the Heat's second-highest scorer with 13 points, and guard Dwyane Wade finished with 11. Bosh and Wade combined to hit 10 of 26 shots.

The Heat failed to score during the first four minutes of the second half.

Fans and media can debate whether the Spurs are a true sports dynasty because they never won championships in successive seasons, but they earn points for longevity. Duncan, 38, has been around for all five championships, the first of them in 1999.

During this year's Finals, Duncan set all-time NBA marks for postseason minutes played and playoff double-doubles -- in his case, points and rebounds.

Ginobili, 36, and Parker, 32, were key cogs for each of the Spurs' past four championships, including 2003, 2005 and 2007.

The Spurs led 47-40 at halftime Sunday after trailing by 16 points in the first quarter.

James ignited the fast start for the Heat, scoring 17 of Miami's 29 first-quarter points. San Antonio, in addition to being unable to stop James, missed 10 of its first 11 shots.

The Spurs recovered sufficiently to cut the deficit to seven after the first quarter, and then they really rallied.

Leonard scored a steady 15 in the first half. Ginobili scored eight in the second quarter to finish the half with 14.

The Spurs were on their way to grabbing the championship that they let slip away last season.

"Last year's loss was devastating," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "For the group to have the fortitude that they showed to get back to this spot I think speaks volumes about how they are constituted and what kind of fiber they have."

The Heat reached the NBA Finals all four seasons since James and Bosh joined the team, winning two titles.

"Take 50 percent in four years in championships any day," James said. "You want to win them all, but that's just the nature of the game."

      NOTES:
Ray Allen replaced Mario Chalmers at guard in Miami's starting lineup. Allen shot 1-for-8 and scored five points. Chalmers went 2-for-3 and scored eight points. ... San Antonio shot 47.4 percent Sunday, down from the team's 54.2 percent success rate in the first four games, the second-best mark through four games in the Finals in the NBA's shot-clock era (since 1954-55), according to Elias Sports. Included was the 75.7 percent the Spurs shot in the first half of Game 3, an NBA Finals record for any half. The Lakers shot 54.6 through four games in 1984 but lost in seven to the Boston Celtics. ... Before this series, Miami never trailed by two games during F LeBron James' four seasons with the Heat. ... The Spurs won Games 3 and 4 in Miami by a total of 40 points, the largest margin of victory by any team in consecutive NBA Finals road games ever. ... There are a lot of ways to describe the frustration of San Antonio's opponents in the 2014 playoffs. One comes from James, who said, "Any little mistake you make, they make you pay."

Johnson gets third win of season at Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- At long last, Jimmie Johnson knows what it feels like to visit victory lane at Michigan International Speedway.

The six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup series champion took the lead for good on Lap 191 after a cycle of pit stops and cruised to the checkered flag at Sunday's Quicken Loans 400 to end a 24-race drought here.

"We've figured out every way to lose this race and today we were able to get it done," he said after getting out of his No. 48 Chevy.

Johnson had encountered heartbreak several times when leading late here and admitted he was nervous as he dashed through the final few laps.

"About 200 yards before the finish line I knew if the car exploded I'd still make it across the line," he said with a chuckle, "so that's when I finally relaxed."

Johnson pitted on Lap 165 and took on four tires and enough fuel to finish the race, which was green the rest of the way. Anyone close to him pitted later and left Johnson comfortably ahead as Hendrick Motorsports captured its fifth straight Sprint Cup series race.

"We were really in a win-win situation," said Johnson, who led 39 laps and jumped to second in the Sprint Cup points standings behind Gordon. "Those guys had to come to pit road to make it to the end.

"Once the strategy unfolded, we knew we were in the catbird's seat."

Crew chief Chad Knaus said the team had an extra ace in the hole.

"We knew there was going to be some opportunities to play some strategy today," he said. "We were fortunate to have a fast racecar and hit the strategy correct."

The car was the same the team used to win Johnson's first race of the season at Charlotte.

Pole sitter Kevin Harvick, who led a race-best 63 laps, was second, followed by Brad Keselowski, Paul Menard and Kasey Kahne.

Johnson's win capped a stellar day for HMS, which saw all four Chevys in the top seven thanks to Kahne and Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr., who were sixth and seventh.

Johnson became the series' first three-time winner and picked up his 69th career Sprint Cup victory. He has finished first in three of the series' last four races and jumped to from fourth to second in the series points standings, 15 points behind Gordon.

Harvick was especially fast on restarts during the first 150 laps of the race but got caught in a series of green-flag stops that dropped him to second. He did little to hide his frustration.

"The car was fast, just wound up on the wrong side of the strategy," he said.

Harvick had the fastest car on the track for most of practice and set a new track record to earn the pole.

The pit strategy chess game forced several other contenders farther back in the field, including Joey Logano, who led the field for 15 laps before being passed by Harvick on Lap 141.

The race wasn't quite a lap old when Brian Vickers brushed the Turn 4 wall, then spun before collecting Travis Kvapil near the entrance to pit lane. Rookie Kyle Larson and Martin Truex Jr. brought out another caution on Lap 6 when they made contact near Turn 2.

Casey Mears and Brett Moffitt tangled in Turn 4 on Lap 115 and Aric Almirola and Denny Hamlin spun in the same place on Lap 122 to bring out another caution. The race was yellow-flagged eight times for 36 laps.

Michigan notebook: Big day for Hendrick Motorsports

The 2013 Quicken Loans 400 was a forgettable day for Hendrick Motorsports.

A year made all the difference.

Jimmie Johnson drove his No. 48 Chevy to his first career win at Michigan International Speedway and Hendrick teammates Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. landed in the top seven.

The finishes sent the team to next weekend's stop at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway with the top three spots in the Sprint Cup series standings. Gordon retained his lead, but it's just 15 points better than Johnson, who jumped from fourth to second with the victory. Earnhardt remained third, 38 points behind Gordon.

"This was a great win for a lot of reasons," team owner Rick Hendrick said. "It was great to see Jimmie, after leading so many laps here, finally close the deal.

"All our cars ran well. We've been kind of clicking here lately."

A win at Sonoma would give HMS six straight series wins for the first time since 2007.

And the good news just kept coming: Six of the top eight finishers were powered by Chevy engines developed by HMS. Brad Keselowski was third for Ford's best finish Sunday and admitted the rest of the teams in the series probably will be looking ahead at HMS the rest of the way.

"We all have a little bit of work to do," he said. "It's pretty obvious the Hendrick engines are way ahead of us."

The day was especially sweet for Kahne, who was dinged on Lap 6 but made his way back and took his first lead on Lap 183 before having to pit a few laps later. His fifth-place finish was just his fourth top-five performance this season and his best since he was third at Kansas on May 10.

Johnson had HMS's best finish last spring when he ended the race 28th. Earnhardt, Gordon and Kahne all left early because of crashes or engine problems.

          FORD STREAK ENDS

Jimmie Johnson's victory also ended a three-race streak of Ford-powered cars in victory lane here, the Sprint Cup's closest stop to the headquarters of General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co.

Alba Colon, Chevrolet's program manager for NASCAR series, was happy to claim the challenge trophy that goes to the manufacturer which wins at Michigan International Speedway.

"It's great to have a friendly competition and bring this trophy home to our office," she said.

The last Chevy win here was Earnhardt's victory in June 2012.

Joey Logano won the August race in a Team Penske Ford and Greg Biffle was the victor in last June's Father's Day race in a Roush Fenway Racing Fusion. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns here Aug. 17 for the Pure Michigan 400.

          BACK IT UP

Rookie Kyle Larson lost his back bumper after a Lap 6 spin that collected Martin Truex Jr. and it might have been the best thing that could have happened to the No. 42 Target Chevy.

He got back on the lead lap and rose as high as fifth before a Lap 151 penalty for speeding on pit lane forced him farther back in the field. Still, he was the day's top rookie after finishing eighth.

"We fought our way back to the top five and pretty much stayed there for most of the race," Larson said, "and then with under 50 laps to go I sped on pit road.

"I was really bummed about that because I knew we would have a shot to win. I hate it, but still somewhat happy to get a top 10, just disappointed I let my team down."

The missing part of the bumper seemed to make him faster and fellow drivers seemed to notice.

"He's got to be loving the way that thing rides with that bumper gone," TNT audio caught Dale Earnhardt Jr. saying to his crew.

          Larson didn't disagree.

"It probably did help me a bit," he said.

          ROUGH START

Brian Vickers' race ended before it was even a lap old.

His Toyota brushed the Turn 4 wall near the end of the opening lap, then spun before collecting Travil Kvapil near the entrance to pit road. Both cars went to the garages and the drivers finished 42nd and 43rd, respectively.

"I don't know what happened," Vickers said. "The car just came out from under me."

It was a particularly tough day for Vickers, who entered the race 13th in the Sprint Cup series standings and searching for his first win of the season. It was his worst finish since a June 1 DNF at Dover.

          HOT LAPS

Jimmie Johnson crossed MIS off his list of tracks where he has never won. All that's left on the current schedule are Chicagoland Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Kentucky Speedway and Watkins Glen. ... There's been plenty of speculation about whom Carl Edwards will be driving for next season, but one team already is off the list. TNT reported before Sunday's race that Edwards will not move to Richard Childress Racing next season, if he moves at all. His contract with Roush Fenway Racing is up at the end of the season. ... Kyle Busch was 41st after broken left rear hub forced him off the track. His crew made repairs and got his Toyota back into the race, albeit 26 laps off the lead. ... Detroit Lions rookie Eric Ebron signed his first NFL contract on Friday and was on the track Sunday afternoon to give drivers the command to start their engines. The tight end was the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft.

                    Teheran crushing NL East rivals

The Atlanta Braves are only 0.5 game up for the National League East crown and will be facing division rival Philadelphia Phillies this week. The Braves are more than happy to send Julio Teheran to the mound against NL East opponents.

The Braves have won Teheran's past 11 games against NL East opponents. Teheran has only allowed 18 runs in those 11 starts and has only twice allowed three or more runs.

The Braves are +126 road dogs against the Phillies (-137) Monday.

                    Weaver's career-long dominance against Indians

There may be no more dominant pitcher over the past decade against the Cleveland Indians than Jered Weaver. In Weaver's career, the Los Angeles Angels have been 12-5 with him on the mound against 'The Tribe.'

During those 17 career starts has only given up an average of 3.6 runs per game, and has kept the Indians to three runs or less 12 times (70.6 percent).

Under bettors have long been cashing in on this matchup. Weaver's over/under record against the Indians is 3-12-2, with a near-perfect 0-7-1 at Progressive field.

The Angels are -115 road favorites against the Indians (+106) Monday.

Martinez to start in place of Wainwright

With Adam Wainwright skipping his start, Carlos Martinez will take to the mound Monday.

Martinez competed for a rotation spot for the St. Louis Cardinals, but ultimately lost out. In Martinez's 30 relief appearances this season he has a 4.67 ERA in only 34.2 innings pitched.

Wainwright is expected to only miss this one start against the New York Mets.

Signs point to under in Cardinals-Mets meeting

The St. Louis Cardinals have been keeping scores low recently, resulting in huge profits for bettors who have capitalized on the trend.

The under is 8-1-1 in the Cardinals' last ten games. Through Monday, St. Louis pitchers have given up the fewest home runs in the MLB (42) to go along with owning the third-best ERA (3.23). The Cards host the light-hitting New York Mets at Busch Stadium Monday. The Mets have the second-worst batting average in the league (.231) and rank fourth-last in home runs (48). Furthering the possibility of the game going under, Cardinals hitters have the fewest home runs in baseball (40 home runs on the season).

St. Louis is currently a -152 fave with a total of 7.5.

Rays poor record vs. LHP could continue vs. O's

It's been a year to forget for the Tampa Bay Rays. Sitting in the basement of the AL East with a 27-43 record, the Rays have struggled in just about every facet of the game.

One particular trend to pay attention to for Monday's meeting with the Baltimore Orioles: The Rays are 0-8 in their last eight versus left-handed pitchers. With lefty Wei-Yin Chen (7-2, 3.76 ERA) on the mound for the Birds, it could be another long day for Tampa's offense.

The Rays will send Jake Odorizzi (2-7. 4.85 ERA) to the mound for the matchup. Tampa Bay is currently slight -116 faves, but bettors are heavily backing the Orioles, evidenced by a consensus of 66 percent.

Under sizzling when Weaver faces Indians

Jered Weaver has been catering to Over bettors of later, posing a 3-0-1 Over/Under count in his last four starts, but he has been a pretty good bet to keep the scoreline low when pitching versus the Cleveland Indians.

The under is 12-2-2 in Weaver's last 16 starts versus the Indians, whom he and the Halos face at Progressive Field Monday. The Angels are currently -115 road faves with a total of eight.

                        Rockies Roll as Underdogs

The Colorado offense is back in fine form, completing a three-game sweep in San Francisco on Sunday with an 8-7 win over the Giants. The Rockies have reeled off five straight victories - each as the underdog - while going 4-0-1 O/U over that stretch on the strength of 38 runs.

                        Royals Nearly Even

The Kansas City Royals are almost back to even money after defeating the Chicago White Sox 6-3 Sunday for their season-high seventh consecutive victory. Kansas City is now -96 units for the season entering Monday's game in Detroit (-135, 8.5).

                        One is the Loneliest Number

Monday's 11-game sked will see just one notable road favorite - the San Diego Padres (-121, 7), who open an interleague series in Seattle. The Padres have lost their last four games as a favorite - all on the road - but are an impressive 7-5 in interleague action so far this season.

                        Pitching Notes

                        * Los Angeles Dodgers star Hyun-jin Ryu has one of the widest home/road splits of any starter, going 2-2 with a 6.15 ERA in his own park and 5-1 with a 1.64 ERA away from L.A. Ryu and the Dodgers (-187, 7) open a series with visiting Colorado on Monday.

                        * Detroit Tigers hurler Justin Verlander is going through some rare struggles, going 2-4 in his last six starts with six straight Overs in that span. Verlander and the Tigers face Jason Vargas and the red-hot Royals.

                        HItting Notes

                        * Colorado outfielder Charlie Blackmon has been one of the catalysts for his team's recent hot streak, recording three three-hit efforts in his past five games to raise his average to .307. The Rockies are 16-6 SU and an incredible 19-2-1 O/U in games where Blackmon records multiple hits.

                        * Milwaukee outfielder Carlos Gomez is batting .309 during a season-best 13-game hitting streak. The Brewers are 7-6 SU and 8-5 O/U during that stretch entering Monday's showdown with the host Arizona Diamondbacks (-118, 8.5).

                        Totals Streak

Baltimore Orioles (0-7 O/U): Low-scoring games have been the norm for the Orioles, who have reeled off an impressive streak of Unders at Camden Yards - a stretch that includes four shutouts, two by the home team and two by the visitors. Baltimore is 10-22-1 O/U at home so far in 2014.

                        Prop of the Day

The Royals could be a strong play, offering +325 at -2.5 on the run line. Kansas City has prevailed by three or more runs six times during its seven-game winning streak, and Verlander has allowed at least five earned runs in five of his previous six starts.

                        Injury Notes

                        * The Miami Marlins will place outfielder Christian Yelich on the 15-day DL with a lower back strain. Yelich had gone 10-for-23 with five RBIs over his previous five games before suffering the injury early in Friday's 8-6 loss to Pittsburgh; the Marlins were 2-3 S/U and 3-2 O/U in those contests.

                        * Baltimore Orioles starter Dylan Bundy (elbow) threw five solid innings in his first minor-league rehab start. The Orioles hope that Bundy, who has just 1 2/3 major-league innings to his credit, will be available to join the team later in the summer.

                        Weather Watch

Wind at Progressive Field will blow out to right field at 6 mph for the game between host Cleveland (-101, 8.5) and the Angels. Teams averaged 8.87 runs and 2.07 homers while batting .250 in 15 games under similar conditions in 2013 - all slightly above the stadium averages.
