    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Not to say Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen are old (in basketball terms) but they both once played for the Seattle SuperSonics.

-- Cardinals 1, Rays 0-- Tampa Bay hasn't scored in its last 28 innings.

-- Twins 4, Blue Jays 0-- Toronto was shut out in three of its last four games.

-- 11 of the 32 NFL teams have new offensive coordinators this season.

-- Falcons' LB Sean Weatherspoon tore his achilles, is out for the 2014 season.

-- RIP Bob Welch, who died Tuesday at age 57. He won 27 games in 1990, the last MLB pitcher to win 25+ games in a season. He won two World Series rings. 57 is too young to die; life is short, people. Enjoy it while we can.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) ESPN.com had a terrific piece Tuesday on how Mack Brown stepping down as football coach at Texas had a domino effect that reached 103 coaching jobs at 47 colleges and four NFL teams. The coaching carousel can be wacky sometimes, especially in football, where there are so many assistant coaches on eeach team.

    12) Garrick McGee went 5-19 as head coach at UAB the last two years, then resigned to become offensive coordinator at Louisville, working for old friend Bobby Petrino. Why, you say? Well, one more bad year at UAB and he was probably going to get fired anyway, plus, a coordinator’s job at Louisville pays $100K more a year than the head coach at UAB. Not too bad to lake a lesser job that pays more.

    11) Cleveland Browns turned down chance to be featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks; what would happen if every team turned them down? It has to be at least a little bit of a distraction, right? No one hates distractions like football coaches.

    10) Browns’ coach Mike Pettine knows a little bit about reality TV; back 15 or so years ago, Pettine was featured along with his father, a legendary high school coach in eastern Pennsylvania, in one of the earliest sports reality shows. It was pretty interesting show; wonder if it’ll find its way back onto TV this fall?

    9) New York Jet coaches were teaching Portuguese soccer players how to throw a football this week; why couldn’t they teach Tim Tebow how to throw one when he played for them?

    8) A newspaper in Columbia, MS fired a sportswriter after he called Lafayette, LA “…the worst place on earth” after covering the Ole Miss/UL-Lafayette baseball series this weekend. Not sure if the guy was trying to be funny or if he truly dislikes southwestern Louisiana, but he lost his job because of it.

    7) Marlins’ pitcher Henderson Alvarez got hurt covering first base Sunday against the Cubs, when a bad throw forced him to jump and he pulled a muscle. Alvarez had a scoreless streak of 26 innings at the time, but lost it when the pitcher who replaced him allowed the inherited runners to score, so a bad deal all around there.

Miami would be a serious playoff contender had Jose Fernandez not gotten hurt; if Alvarez is out for any length of time, it could be a disaster for this year’s Fish.

    6) Brewers/Giants are both in first place; their CFs are both ex-Mets. On 12/7/11, the Mets traded Angel Pagan to the Giants for Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez, a relief pitcher- not good.

On 2/2/08, Mets traded Gomez and three other players to the Twins for Johan Santana, a move that at least helped the Mets for a while, since Santana was an excellent pitcher. Gomez, however, has turned into a really good player for the Brew Crew. This is why you have to wait a while to fully judge a trade.

    5) Speaking of the Twins, their first round draft pick has already signed for $3.85M, not a bad payday for a high school kid. Smart of the kid to sign quickly, now he can go play rookie ball and get his feet wet in pro ball.

    4) You know that tote board in New York where they track the national debt and it runs endlessly? Donald Sterling’s lawyers must have a clock like that counting billable hours as they rack up with this nitwit insisting on suing the NBA in a non-winnable case that will just cause everyone stress and embarrassment, other than the lawyers, who will make a freakin' fortune.

    3) Pittsburgh Steelers are going to run more no-huddle this year? Mike Tomlin finally figured out that he has one of the best QBs in football and wants to let him run things? Smart move, if it happens.

    2) New York Knicks are paying Phil Jackson $12M a year, Derek Fisher $5M a year and neither has ever done his current job before. Sounds like the Knicks.

    1) Monday night was just the second time all season (April 7 the other) where no game saw the winning run score after the sixth inning. Not a lot of drama Monday- there are usually always a game or two that turn on a late rally.

Game of the Day: Kings at Rangers
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers (-135, 5)

      Kings lead series 3-0.

Although they are on the cusp of their second Stanley Cup title in three years, the Los Angeles Kings know all too well that a 3-0 series lead isn't insurmountable. After all, Los Angeles became the fourth team in NHL history to overcome that very deficit to stun San Jose in the first round. The Kings look to end any thought of the New York Rangers becoming the fifth - and first in the Stanley Cup final since the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs - when the teams play Game 4 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

"I'm just extremely disappointed that we're in this hole," Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist said. "We have to regroup; it's not over." History might suggest otherwise as nine teams have lost the first three games of the Stanley Cup final since 1982 - and only New Jersey extended the series past the fourth, pushing it to six before succumbing to Los Angeles in 2012. "Nothing is done, nothing is finished," said Jonathan Quick, who recorded his ninth career postseason shutout by stopping all 32 shots he faced in the Kings' 3-0 victory on Monday.

      TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

      LINE HISTORY:
The Rangers opened as -127 home faves but has moved up to -137 with a total of 5.

      INJURY REPORT:
Rangers - LW Daniel Carcillo (Eligible June 11, suspension).

      ABOUT THE KINGS:
Justin Williams continued his torrid postseason stretch by setting up Jeff Carter's goal with under one second remaining in the first period in Game 3. Williams has scored two goals and set up seven others during his five-game point streak and has 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) in as many playoff contests. Carter has also averaged a point per game, albeit by scoring 10 goals and setting up 14 others.

      ABOUT THE RANGERS:
New York's punchless power play failed on all six opportunities on Monday and is a dismal 1-for-14 in the first three games of the final. Rick Nash saw some rare time with the man advantage, but was held off the scoresheet for the third consecutive contest and sixth in seven games. "I can't be satisfied when we're losing," Nash told ESPNNewYork.com. "Right now, chances aren't good enough. They've got to be going in, we've got to be helping the team win."

      TRENDS:
      * Over is 7-1-1 In Kings last nine games.
      * Home team is 7-2 in the last nine meetings.
      * Kings are 9-0 in their last nine vs. Metropolitan.
      * Kings are 8-3 in their last 11 road games.

      CONSENSUS:
61.68 percent of Consensus bets are on the Rangers.

                Underdogs rule the diamond Tuesday

Tuesday was a great day to be backing underdogs against the runline in major league baseball.

Underdogs went 10-4 against the runline yesterday, a success rate of an impressive 72 percent. Road dogs did most of the heavy lifting going 6-2, while home dogs were a respectable 4-2.

Pitchers on the mark as unders come through

Pitchers were on their game Tuesday, as it was one of the better days to pick major league games to go under the run total.

Teams went 5-9 over/under in the majors yesterday, hitting at a mark of almost 65 percent. That is much better than the season average of just over 48 percent.

Crucial line update for Game 4 of Cup Finals

The Los Angeles Kings will have the chance to hoist the Stanley Cup above their heads Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, but books think the New York Rangers will extend the series at least one more game.

The Rangers have held steady as -137 favorites as of Wednesday morning, despite trailing the Kings in the series 3 games to 1. The Rangers opened as -127 favorites and slowly climbed all the way to -140 before settling down at the current number.

Storms, strong wind expected at several ballparks

There are thunderstorms and strong winds expected across several ballparks Wednesday.

The Baltimore Orioles (-125, 8.5) host the Boston Red Sox, where thunderstorms are expected along with a 58 percent chance of rain. There will also be a 10 mph wind blowing from first to third.

In Pittsburgh, the Pirates (-125, 7.5) host the Chicago Cubs and thunderstorms are expected with a 63 percent chance of rain. A seven mph wind will be blowing in from right field.

There is a 94 percent chance of rain in Philadelphia, where the Phillies (-125, 7) will host the San Diego Padres. There is also a chance of thunderstorms and an eight mph wind wind blowing from first to third.

In Cincinnati, the Reds (-123, 7) host the Los Angeles Dodgers with thunderstorms an a 60 percent chance of rain in the forecast. There will be a seven mph wind blowing in from right field.

Baseball's worst money pitcher on the hill Wednesday

Arizona's Brandon McCarthy takes the hill Wednesday and that has spelled trouble for Diamondbacks bettors.

McCarthy is baseball's worst money pitcher, netting a whopping -$1,024 units so far this season and the team is 2-11 in games he starts. Today he faces the Houston Astros as a +111 underdog.

To make matters worse he is facing Astros' starter Dallas Keuchel, who is third ranked money pitcher at $783 units.

Rays scoreless streak has reached 28 innings

Adam Wainwright threw seven scoreless innings last night. Which is not a big deal as he does that kind of thing a lot. But the bullpen threw two more scoreless innings and the opponent was the Rays and that amounted to the third straight shutout of the apparently doomed team from Tampa Bay. The Rays are the first AL team to be shut out since the Twins did it in 2004.

That, plus the final inning of their loss on Saturday, adds up to 28 consecutive scoreless innings for Tampa Bay, which broke the old franchise record of 26 innings, set in 2002. That Devil Rays team finished 55-106.

They’re currently on pace to go 59-103, so I guess things could be worse.
