    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Lebron James had 35 points, 10 rebounds, Miami evens Finals 1-1 and I can go two days without reading about air conditioners.

-- Big 14 wants to use Rutgers to weasel its way into having its 2018 conference tournament in New York City. College hoop is killing geography teachers.

-- Astros' rookie George Springer has 12 homers in his first 47 games.

-- Max Scherzer turned down a $144M contract from the Tigers last winter, but has taken a out an insurance policy to cover lost earnings in case of injury.

-- Apparently a friend of Phil Mickelson's owes the FDIC $15M, which is how the SEC came to probe Mickelson's stock dealings.

-- Miguel Cabrera left Sunday night's game with a tight hamstring; David Ortiz hit a dramatic 3-run HR in the 9th inning to end Boston's 5-game skid.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend..........

    13) Miami Heat has now gone 47 consecutive playoff games without losing twice in a row; series goes to Miami now for two games. Remember, for first time since 1984, it is a 2-2-1-1-1 formeat, instead of 2-3-2.

    12) $235M Dodgers are 33-31. $44M Astros are 28-36; those five extra wins aren't worth an additional $186M.

    11) Being a minor league manager takes a thick skin; Wally Backman is the Mets' AAA manager in Las Vegas-- he's had a new player almost every other day for the last two weeks. Not only that, but players coming back down to AAA have bruised egos and dented confidence; its up to Backman to rehab those guys and build them back up again.

Some major league team will wise up and hire Backman as its manager soon.

    10) One last note on the Mets; if Dave Hudgens was such an awful hitting coach that deserved to be fired, why are the Mets second in 1st inning scoring? Why do they score the most runs on the road? What exactly did he do that was so bad?

    9) There are few things more futile than needing the Cubs to score runs against my opponents' pitchers in fantasy baseball-- ain't happening. Why in God's name do they bat Junior Lake second?

Lake is hitting .244 with nine walks in 189 PA, a .277 OB%. He's hitting .360 when he bats 7th/8th, why not bat him there?

    8) I did like the Cubs' throwback uniforms; most are ugly- these were nice.

    7) Los Angeles Kings won their last three games in OT, but trailed by two goals in first period in all three games and never led in any of the games, until OT.

    6) I'll have no idea who is still in or out of Conference USA until I get Phil Steele's great college football magazine in a couple weeks, but C-USA has pocketed $36M in "membership dues" over the last two years. Its good to be them.

    5) Baseball announcers are making too much of run differential, like its the most important thing, when wins/losses are most important. The A's have a great run differential; they beat up on lousy pitchers, but struggle in close games-- when we get to late September, run differential won't mean a hill of beans-- wins will.

    4) There was a playoff on the WEB.com Tour Sunday that took 11 holes to finish, longest in Tour history. Those guys are playing for their careers; had to be awful lot of tension until the outcome was decided.

    3) Ben Crane was 180-1 to win in Memphis this week, so if you had your money down on him, buy yourself something nice today- you've earned it.

    2) In case you were wondering what Karl Malone has been up to, he was a judge at the Miss USA Pageant last night.

    1) Dodgers had their third rain-shortened game in the last 30 years yesterday; all three games came in Denver. Look at the lineup they used yesterday and tell me its any better than what Houston put on the field, other than Kershaw pitching.

Pocono notebook: Stewart takes blame for penalty

As laps clicked down in Sunday's Pocono 400, Stewart-Haas Racing seemed primed for a celebration, running 1-2-3 at Pocono Raceway.

Tony Stewart was leading teammates Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch with 45 laps remaining when Harvick was forced to pit with a left front tire going down.

Then Stewart was penalized for speeding on pit road.

Suddenly, Busch, who also pitted, was back to 19th, Stewart was relegated to the tail end of the lead lap in 31st and Harvick was a lap down in 32nd.

"One hundred percent driver error," said Stewart of his pit road snafu. "I gave my guys grief last week with a sixth-place run when I thought we should have run in the top three. Then I threw it away this week."

"It's just a shame," said Greg Zipadelli, competition director for Stewart-Haas. "We had a strong weekend as far as speed. It was encouraging. We had a good day going. It just hasn't been our year so far."

When Stewart took the lead from Brad Keselowski on Lap 76, it marked only the second time this season that the three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion had led a race. He led 74 laps from the pole at Texas Motor Speedway and led 24 at Pocono.

Busch, who led five laps, overcame early issues with his transmission slipping out of fourth gear and ended up with a third-place finish.

"At one point, it was great to see Tony leading, Harvick second and we were third," he said. "That's what we wanted to see with our Stewart-Haas Chevys up front. This is the point in the season where each (team) starts to build its own identity. Our team, as young as we are, this is the type of finish that will build the confidence."

Stewart clawed his way back to 13th, one spot ahead of Harvick, who has been the fastest driver in both practice sessions on Saturday. SHR driver Danica Patrick also had a decent race going. Although off pit cycle, she was second with 25 laps to go only to see her afternoon end in a crash (after a tire problem) with 23 laps left and a 37th-place finish.

      LARSON LEADS LAPS

Rookie Kyle Larson not only recorded his sixth top-10 finish but led his first laps of the season.

"It was a lot better finish than I thought we were going to get," said Larson, who set the pace for Laps 102-108 after winning Saturday's ARCA race at Pocono.

Larson joked earlier in the weekend about being uncomfortable with shifting gears, a necessity in the Sprint Cup cars at Pocono.

"To be honest with you, I did miss a couple of shifts -- just twice, probably. I think I learned a little bit (from the ARCA race) that helped me get through Turn 2."

      ROUGH WEEKENDS

Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth had a rocky time at Pocono, where they started 20th and 26th, respectively.

Johnson, who managed to lead the race briefly when he was off fuel cycle, had battled his way as high as fourth place when he ran into Marcos Ambrose while exiting his pit stall during a caution on Lap 75. Crew chief Chad Knaus accepted responsibility.

"He (Knaus) thought the No. 9 had left his pit box, so there was just confusion on pit road," said Johnson, who ended up spinning his car after contact. "I feel terrible for the No. 9 guys and hurting their race car. (There was) also a tire changer and tire carrier on the right front of the No. 51 (Justin Allgaier) car -- and how I didn't hit those guys is beyond me. It wouldn't have been good."

Kenseth, who finished 25th to remain second in the point standings behind Jeff Gordon (eighth), failed to mount a challenge on Sunday. His crew did all it could to repair the nose of his Toyota after early-race contact with Jamie McMurray punched a hole in the front end and damaged his hood.

Kenseth's Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin, a four-time winner at Pocono, was strong enough to lead three times for four laps, but was never positioned to challenge Brad Keselowski or Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the final laps.

      CHANCE TO RELAX

Earnhardt says that being virtually locked into the Chase by virtue of his two wins prior to road course races at Sonoma and Watkins Glen is a huge relief.

"I can run OK at the Glen every once in a while, but Sonoma -- it's embarrassing, man," Earnhardt said. "We've decided to just go there without a test and wing it. Now, we don't have to dig and gouge for every single position and we don't have to worry if it's a total disaster or if it doesn't work out or if we get spun out on the last lap. We can just go have fun."

Perhaps more importantly, Earnhardt believes that having two victories in the first 14 races of the season should help his team effectively prepare for Chase contention.

"It definitely made a difference (winning) at Daytona. Now, having two wins is going to make it even easier -- a lot less stress," he said. "That could mean good things going into the Chase. That's got to be a positive for our composure and psyche going into the Chase -- not having to stress all the way through (the 26th race) at Richmond."

Game of the Day: Kings at Rangers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers (-125, 5)

After failing to erase several two-goal deficits, the New York Rangers attempt to claw their way out of a two-game hole when they host the Los Angeles Kings in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final on Monday at Madison Square Garden. New York held leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2 before Dwight King's controversial goal and former Ranger Marian Gaborik's NHL-leading 13th tally forged a tie and captain Dustin Brown scored 10:26 into double overtime as Los Angeles claimed a 5-4 triumph on Saturday. "Everyone is talking about how we come back," Brown said of the team's resiliency. "I think it's more how we turn the tide of the game over the course of the game."

The Kings have overcome the tide of emotions to become the first team in league history to win three consecutive playoff contests after facing two-goal deficits. New York wasn't interested in hearing that news after failing to hold a third-period lead for the first time in 11 contests this postseason. Mats Zuccarello collected a goal and an assist in Game 2 for his first dent on the scoreboard since his three-point performance in the series opener versus Montreal in the Eastern Conference final.

        TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

        LINE HISTORY:
The Rangers opened as -122 home faves but has moved up to -125 with a total of 5.

        INJURY REPORT:
Rangers - LW Daniel Carcillo (Eligible June 11, suspension)

        ABOUT THE KINGS:
Although Los Angeles holds a 2-0 advantage, it hasn't had an official lead in either contest of the series. "Either way, we're up 2-0. I don't care how we got there," said Justin Williams, who scored the overtime winner in Game 1 before collecting three assists on Saturday. For those keeping score, the Kings haven't enjoyed a lead in the past 229 minutes, 15 seconds - dating to the third period of Game 6 of the Western Conference final against defending Stanley Cup-champion Chicago.

        ABOUT THE RANGERS:
Henrik Lundqvist was livid that King's controversial goal was allowed to stand despite goaltender interference, but admitted that he needed to leave the sour taste in Los Angeles. "You don't have a choice, you have to move on," Lundqvist said. "We go home now and try to stay positive, believing in what we do in here." When asked for his thoughts on King crashing the crease, coach Alain Vigneault did his best to measure his words: "Ask the NHL," he said.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in New York.
        * Home team is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
        * Kings are 8-0 in their last eight vs. Metropolitan.
        * Over is 5-1 in Kings last six road games.

        CONSENSUS:
73.69 percent of Consensus bets are on the Rangers.

Miguel Cabrera, Detroit - Ques Mon

Cabrera left Sunday's game with left hamstring tightness and he is questionable for Monday's game against the White Sox.

Felix Hernandez strikes out career-high 15

Felix Hernandez didn’t get the win on Sunday at Tropicana Field, but he should have. The Mariners’ ace struck out a career-high 15 batters in seven shutout innings, yet took a no-decision for his brilliant effort. It was another example of how misleading the win-loss stat can be for a starting pitcher.

Hamilton continues powerful start for Angels

A two-week stay on the disabled list has not disabled left fielder Josh Hamilton's powerful start for the Los Angeles Angels.

The American League's most valuable player in 2010 hit a two-run single, added a double, drove in three runs and went 2-for-4 in a 4-2 victory Sunday over the Chicago White Sox.

Since being activated Tuesday, Hamilton has eight hits in 23 at-bats and drove in five runs. Two hits have been doubles; another was a home run.

Before going on the disabled list with a torn thumb ligament, Hamilton was hitting .444 with an on-base percentage of .545 and a slugging percentage of .741.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Texas-sized total
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Big Faves Come Through

Sunday's three biggest favorites all came through in afternoon action. The Los Angeles Angels (-165) held on for a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox, while Cincinnati (-163) defeated Philadelphia 4-1 and Oakland (-139)

                        Nationals Stay Low

The Washington Nationals (-119) capped their stingiest week of the season, blanking the San Diego Padres 6-0 for their third shutout in a six-game stretch. The Nationals have won seven of nine and are 2-5 O/U in their last seven, dropping to 29-25-7 O/U for the season.

                        Texas-Sized Total

The Texas Rangers (+105, 10) see their biggest home total of the season Monday as they wrap up a four-game series with the Cleveland Indians. Texas went 5-5 S/U and 2-8 O/U in 10 home games in 2013 with the total set at double digits.

                        Pitching Notes

                        * Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg has been one of the strongest Over bets among starting pitchers, going 14-6-1 O/U in his last 21 outings dating back to the end of last season. Strasburg and the Nationals (-120, 6.5) face host San Francisco on Monday.

                        * Cincinnati southpaw Tony Cingrani will look to recoup some of his value as he and the Reds (-105, 8) host the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cingrani ranks 211th out of 222 starters in money won at $-527, a far cry from his modest gain of $27 during his rookie 2013 campaign.

                        Hitting Notes

                        * Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion is just 3-for-17 over his last five games while failing to drive in a run during that span. Toronto is 3-2 SU over that stretch but has dropped two straight and has gone Under in three in a row entering Monday's tilt with visiting Minnesota (+158, 9.5).

                        * New York Yankees outfielder Alfonso Soriano is mired in a 2-for-21 slump over his last seven games, dipping his average to .229. The Yankees are 2-5 S/U and 3-4 O/U in that span as they conclude their series with host Kansas City (-126, 8).

                        Totals Streak

New York Mets (7-2-1 O/U): The Mets are caught in the clutches of a six-game losing skid thanks in large part to a pitching staff that has surrendered an average of nearly five runs per game during the streak. New York is 28-25-10 O/U for the season.

                        Prop of the Day

Take a shot on San Francisco to beat Washington by exactly two runs (+750). Two of the Giants' previous three victories have been by a pair of runs, and the Giants earned two two-run victories in six meetings with the Nationals in 2013.

                        Injury Notes

                        * Tampa Bay right-hander Jeremy Hellickson threw three scoreless innings in a rehab start over the weekend as he recovers from offseason elbow surgery. Hellickson went 12-10 with a 5.17 ERA in 33 starts last season, in which the Rays went 18-15 S/U and 16-15-2 O/U.

                        * Boston starter Clay Buchholz (knee) reported no soreness after a 48-pitch simulated game. Buchholz has struggled mightily this season, going 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA while losing $-356 in value over 10 starts.

                        Weather Watch

                        * Wind at U.S. Cellular Field will blow from left to right field at 11 mph for Monday's game between the host Chicago White Sox (+114, 8.5) and the Detroit Tigers. Teams averaged 9.46 runs and 2.58 homers in 24 games under similar conditions in 2013, slightly above stadium averages.

                        Umpire Stat of the Day

Over is 5-1-1 in umpire Jim Wolf's last seven games behind home plate. Wolf will call the balls and strikes for the series finale between Cleveland and Texas.

Yasiel Puig, LA Dodgers - Prob Mon

Puig left Saturday's game with a right hip flexor injury and did not play Sunday. He is expected to return for Monday's game against the Reds.

Jackson, Cubs make Pirates an attractive play

Edwin Jackson gets the start for the Chicago Cubs when they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park Monday, but bettors looking to strike gold on plus money should look elsewhere.

The Cubbies (+132 underdogs) are just 1-7 in Jackson's last eight road starts. Jackson is also one of the worst money pitchers in the majors this season - posting a paltry $-357 on the season for the $100 bettor.

The total for the matchup is currently at 7.5.

Recent history shows Dodgers-Reds likely to go under

Is a pitcher's duel in store for Monday's NL matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds? Recent history says yes.

The under is 11-3-1 in the last 15 meetings between the two clubs.

Dan Haren (5-4, 3.50 ERA) gets the ball for the Dodgers while the Reds will counter with Tony Cingrani (2-6, 4.09 ERA). Cincinnati is currently -113 favorites with a total of 7.5.

Under a great bet with Peavy starting

Jake Peavy will be on the hill for the Boston Red Sox versus the Baltimore Orioles Monday, and recent history is pointing to the game going under with the veteran on the mound.

In Peavy's last 12 starts, the under is 8-3-1. Bud Norris gets the start for O's.

Savvy bettors could make a nice profit if Peavy continues the trend with the total set at a generous 8.5. The Orioles are currently slight -107 faves.

This stat shows Porcello, Tigers a fantastic play vs. White Sox

Detroit sends Rick Porcello to the mound versus the Chicago White Sox Monday which means Tigers backers are licking their lips: Detroit is 12-1 in Porcello's last 13 versus the ChiSox.

Hector Noesi gets his first start of the season for Chicago. The Tigs are currently -122 faves with a total of 8.5.
