    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Mets sent catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud back to AAA, another dismal failure by an organization that seems clueless at times.

-- Texas made it to the College World Series, 15th time for coach Augie Garrido, who played manager of the Bronx Bombers in For the Love of the Game, Kevin Costner's baseball movie.

-- Tonalist won the Belmont Stakes, 5th time in eight years the Belmont winner was a horse that skipped the Derby/Preakness and was fresh for the Belmont.

-- This week's Memphis Open is Phil Mickelson's 500th PGA Tour event.

-- Kendrys Morales signed with the Twins, who are in last place in AL Central but are still within striking distance.

-- Memo to the kid on Charleston who slid head-first into home plate Saturday at Louisville; its a really bad idea. slide feet-first or not at all. Too easy to get hurt.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.........

    13) Its really hard to win horse racing's Triple Crown, a fact California Chrome's owner doesn't seem to grasp. Three races in five weeks isn't what thoroughbred horses do nowadays. Steve Coburn's reaction after the race was human, but he has to know it was going to be a tall task for his horse, who ran a strong race but lost.

    12) Will horse racing powers-that-be stretch out the Triple Crown races to make it more manageable for horses to run three strenuous races? They could push back the Belmont to July 4th, and put the Preakness two weeks later than it is, to give a horse more recovery/training time. If TV demands it, it'll happen.

    11) Wild night of sports late Saturday night, with the Kings winning Game 2 in double OT at Staples, then four MLB games all ending with the home team scoring in their last AB, with three of the four wins walk-offs.

    10) Mets lost their fifth game in row 5-4 in San Francisco, as Giants scored twice in bottom of ninth inning. Mets then sent their catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud back to AAA; wonder if he'll still be in Las Vegas when I get there next month?

    9) Angels trailed Chris Sale 5-0 in 8th inning, but scored six runs in bottom of 8th inning to win 6-5; brutal loss for the White Sox. .

    8) Andrew Cashner came off the DL and dominated the Nationals for six innings, but they took him out after six innings/70 pitches; by time I took my dirty dishes out to the kitchen, they blew the lead for Cashner, but later won 4-3 in 11 innings. Big win for San Diego, which seemingly has no offense.

    7) Speaking of the Padres, are they so talent-rich that they could waste a 28th-round draft pick on Johnny Manziel? Thats what they did Saturday. If I was a San Diego season ticket holder, I'd be asking someone for an explanation on that one.

    6) RIP Mrs Joan Haller, who passed away this week; she was one of the nicest people I've ever met; her son was a good friend of mine growing up, and I spent a lot of time in their house. She was always kind and fun to talk with. Rest in peace.

    5) Neighborhood I grew up in had 19 boys and four girls in it; we used to play basketball, wiffle ball for hours and had a lot of fun. I am lucky to have grown up in such a cool neighborhood. Matter of fact, I still live here.

    4) Dodgers lost Yasiel Puig/Dee Gordon Saturday, both to hip injuries; they're now 9.5 games out of first place with 99 games left. Still say Dusty Baker's phone is going to be ringing soon: "Dusty? Magic Johnson on Line 1"

    3) Red Sox might be a little worried about Jon Lester's night in Detroit: 4.1 IP, 12 hits, no strikeouts, five runs, 90 PT, only four misses on 41 swings.

    2) Mystery Millionaire is a new reality TV show; these really rich guys lie to prospective girlfriends about their welath, they pick one of the three candidates, then spring the big news to them. Little weird, but an interesting concept.

    1) I'm thinking everyone has to be impressed by the lack of controversy with the instant replay system in baseball; its helped a lot. Its only June 8 and the system seems to be settled in and doing well, reversing a surprising amount of calls. Some in the media are still whining about delays in games, but they haven't been that bad.

Game of the Day: Heat at Spurs
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs (-4.5, 198.5)

      Spurs lead series 1-0

The air-conditioning system in San Antonio has been fixed and LeBron James attempts to move past a dreadful fourth-quarter experience as the Miami Heat seek to bounce back from a Game 1 loss when they visit the Spurs in Sunday’s Game 2 of the NBA Finals. James experienced severe cramping and dehydration issues and missed most of the final 7 1/2 minutes as temperatures soared above 90 degrees due to an electrical malfunction at AT&T Center. San Antonio closed with a 31-9 spurt for a convincing 110-95 victory.

James was affected much more than any other player in Thursday’s oven-like conditions and told reporters on Friday that he received 2 1/2 bags of intravenous fluids afterward. “For obvious reasons, I was angry, I was disappointed in myself,” James said. “I did everything that I needed to do to prepare for this game, prepare for this moment and to feel like my body failed me, I was angry in the fact that I couldn’t help my team get over the hump.” James departed with 3:59 remaining after he scored a basket to pull the Heat within 94-92 and the Spurs went on a game-ending 16-3 surge after he departed.

      TV:
      8 p.m. ET, ABC

      LINE HISTORY:
The Spurs opened at -4 and quickly moved to -4.5. The total opened at 199.5 and has been bet down to 198.5.

      INJURY REPORT:
Miami: LeBron James is listed as probable after suffering leg cramps in Game 1. San Antonio: N/A.

      ABOUT THE HEAT:
James scored 25 points in 33 minutes before exiting, and he first became concerned about the conditions in the first half. He loaded up on fluids at halftime but his body was unable to hold up and he was in the game for only 34 seconds over the final 7:31 before heading to the locker room prior to the end of the contest. Miami coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters the Spurs should be fined if the situation happens again. “We’re not making any excuses for it,” Spoelstra said. “It was an extreme, unfortunate situation for both teams. It probably won’t happen again, ever.”

      ABOUT THE SPURS:
While James couldn’t hold up in the heat, San Antonio veteran Tim Duncan thrived with 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting to go with 10 rebounds. The 38-year-old power forward played 33 minutes and operated at will in the interior. “Every once in a while, I get a jump shot from 15 to 18 feet, but mostly my effective range is in there right now,” Duncan said during Friday’s media availability. “I’m going to pick-and-roll and try to get open shots and try to take advantage of the rotation if they’re trapping.” Duncan shot 49 percent against Miami in the 2013 Finals while averaging 18.9 points and 12.1 rebounds.

      TRENDS:

      * Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
      * Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
      * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in San Antonio.
      * Heat are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings in San Antonio.

      CONSENSUS:
Fifty-two percent of the wagers are on the Heat +4.5.

Heat – Spurs #2: The Game Inside the Game
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The focus here through the playoffs has been to find those key links to winning that are not always common in the marketplace, edges from game flows and matchups that are not built into the betting lines. But the LeBron James storyline from Game #1 told the tale, and despite that story blinking like neon across the sports mediaverse, it is where we have to begin in building the foundation for Game #2.

First there should be an acknowledgement of something that has been written about here on several occasions in recent weeks – despite Miami going for a “three-peat”, and having the best player in the sport, the Heat do not have a great following in the current market. This series opener was more of the same – there were San Antonio -5.5’s showing in several key precincts prior to tipoff, matching the highest underdog price Miami had received in the 377 games that James has played for the franchise.

So what did some of the first stores to open for Game #2 do? Anticipating “Zig Zag” play showing on the Heat, -4 was the common opener, and one big shop came in at -3.5. That did not last long, with San Antonio money even creating a few -5’s already for Sunday.

Now the challenge – just what is the proper score to etch in stone as being the most predictive result from Thursday? Yes, Miami did have the lead when James first left with 7:31 remaining, only to return for a lone offensive possession on which he scored, but over his 32:53 of court time the two teams were even. Would Miami have held on with a healthy James? That is where the speculations begin, but we do know one thing that is nearly a metaphysical certainty – the final stages of that game absolutely would have been different. It would have been almost impossible for the Heat defense and rebounding to have been worse.

Miami got a stop on the first defensive set after James left, a miss by Manu Ginobli that Ray Allen rebounded with 6:48 remaining. That was the last rebound the Heat were to get. San Antonio scored 26 points over the final 6:07, only failing to score on a trip that resulted in a turnover, making 10 of 11 shots, six of them from 3-point range. Of the 10 makes, nine were assisted. There were six available rebounds, and the Spurs got all of them.

Now contrast that to the rest of the game. San Antonio had 21 turnovers, and a 1:1 Assist-to-TO ratio in the 40:29 prior to the James exit, and had only made 7-19 triples. Danny Green had been 0-5 from the field, but scored 11 points on 4-4 (three triples) the rest of the way. Is there anything intelligent to be taken away from the closing stretch, enough so to bet your money on? Doubtful.

So what were the keys when the real matchup was taking place? This series will turn on the efficiency and passing of the San Antonio offense vs. the activity of the Miami defense in the passing lanes. The Heat were successful often in taking the ball way (14 steals, none after James left), but that does mean some gambling, and the Spurs make you pay for that – they moved the ball so well that a litany of wide open shots were created, of which they knocked down a sizzling 40-68 (they were above 50 percent even when James did play). Ginobli and Tony Parker combined for more assists than the Miami team, while Boris Diaw had more than any individual Heat player.

That is the battle. Can the Miami defense take the Spurs out of their rhythm, an efficient flow that has now led to at least 104 points in every game of a current 9-0 home playoff run (yes, Thursday’s 110 comes with an *). But in trying to grade that element from Game #1, it only comes up as an “incomplete”.

As for the Total, the teams will be hard-pressed to match that 77-146 shooting, especially the 25-54 from 3-point range. But both want to push the pace on offense (there were 39 fast break points on Thursday), and if the game is going to be closer there is a much greater potential for end-game scrambling (not only was the Miami defense a disaster down the stretch, there was only a Mario Chalmers triple over the final 4:00 on offense). And with the AC assuredly fixed for Sunday, it should mean fresher legs for both teams in the second half, especially with both sides coming in extremely well rested (no player got to 34:00 in Game #1).

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Harang's still got it
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Harang Hurling Unders

Aaron Harang started the season on fire, but has since faded from the spotlight. In his 13 starts this season. Harang has allowed no more than two runs 11 times and has only given up 26 runs. He is carrying a 4-8-1 O/U record and with the Braves' bats going silent as of late a low-scoring affair could be on-tap against the Diamondbacks.

The Jekyll and Hyde tale of Cleveland

The Cleveland Indians are currently treading water in the middle of the American League Central and that has a lot to do with their road record. Despite a 21-11 record at home (second-best in MLB), the Indians have a 9-20 record away from Progressive Field. The Indians have scored five or more runs nine time on the road this season compared to 17 times at home.

                Bay Area Bank

Both the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's have been beating up on their respective divisions and cashing for bettors. The Giants have won eight of 10 and are the best money team in baseball by a wide margin at $1937, while the A's have won seven of 10 and are the fourth best money team at $870. The Giants (-148) host the Mets and the A's (-145) visit the Orioles.

                Pitching Notes

                * The Oakland Athletics will send Scott Kazmir to the mound with a smile on their face. The A's are 10-2 in Kazmir's 12 starts this season. Kazmir let's runners get on base, allowing at least five hits in eight of his stars, but has the seventh-best WHIP in the MLB (.99) giving bettors a 4-8 O/U.

                * Right-hander Hiroki Kuroda has been flat outside of Yankee Stadium. Kuroda's last 11 starts on the road have seen him give up at least seven hits nine times. Needless to say the Yankees have been far from spectacular in those starts holding a 2-9 S.U. and 6-4-1 O/U.

                Hitting Notes

                * SS Jordy Mercer has been quietly performing solidly for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In Mercer's last six starts he has recorded multiple hits five times and has six RBI. That span has also seen the Pirates go 5-1 S.U. and 3-3 O/U.

                * Though a career revitalization has been talked about, Justin Morneau is started to look like a flustered batter we've seen over the past few seasons. Morneau has only four hits in his past nine games for the Rockies, but has five strikeouts. If the slumping Rockies (0-9 S.U.) can be expected to turn it around, so to will Morneau.

                Totals Streak

Tampa Bay Rays (2-7 O/U): The mediocre at-best Rays offense and a sudden surge in pitching has created low-scoring games. In the past nine contests, the Rays have scored a measly 20 runs while dropping eight of their last nine.

                Injury Notes

                * Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto is set to make his first rehab start for the Louisville Bats Sunday. Votto has not been himself and if the season ended today, he would have career lows in both batting average and slugging percentage. Votto has been on the DL since May 16 with a strain quad.

                * Yasiel Puig left Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies with an undisclosed injury. The Los Angeles Dodgers have him officially listed as questionable for Sunday's series finale.

                Weather Watch

High winds are expected in Chicago which could greatly affect the Marlins-Cubs game. No precipitation is expected, but their is a projected wind of 17 miles per hour blowing in-towards home plate from left field.

                Umpire of the Day

Alan Porter will calling balls and strikes when the New York Mets take on the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park. The last eight games with Porter behind home plate have seen a perfect 0-8 O/U record.

Red Sox at Tigers: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers (-150, 7.5)

The Boston Red Sox can’t stop streaking. The Red Sox lost 10, won seven and will try to end their latest skid at five and avoid a sweep when they visit the Detroit Tigers for the finale of a three-game series on Sunday. The Tigers came into the set in a rough patch but are taking advantage of Boston’s starting pitching slump while gaining some small revenge against the Red Sox after falling to them in the American League Championship Series last fall.

Detroit took three straight at Fenway Park last month and dominated the first two games of this series, including knocking Boston ace Jon Lester around for five runs and 12 hits in 4 1/3 innings in Saturday’s 8-6 triumph. That sweep by the Tigers from May 16-18 marked the first of seven straight series that would end in sweeps for the Red Sox (three on the positive side), a string they will try to snap on Sunday. Boston came alive in the late innings on Saturday and received strong production from the top of the order in a 15-hit performance.

                  TV:
                  8 p.m. ET, ESPN

                  PITCHING MATCHUP:
Red Sox RH John Lackey (6-4, 3.28 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (2-2, 2.15)

Lackey suffered a complete-game loss at Cleveland on Monday, surrendering three runs on eight hits and coming out on the wrong end of a 3-0 final. The veteran had combined for 13 1/3 scoreless innings over his previous two starts and has issued a total of three walks in his last three turns. Lackey had a string of four straight quality starts come to an end against Detroit on May 17, when he was reached for six runs – five earned – and nine hits in 5 1/3 frames.

Sanchez has yet to allow more than three earned runs in an outing and went seven scoreless frames while yielding two hits and striking out five against Toronto on Tuesday. The 30-year-old is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA in his last four starts, a run that began with a solid turn at Boston. Sanchez earned a win on May 18 while holding the Red Sox to two runs – one earned – and five hits in five innings.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Road team is 5-0 in Hamaris last five games behind home plate.
                  * Red Sox are 0-5 in the last five meetings.
                  * Tigers are 2-6 in Sanchez's last eight home starts.
                  * Under is 9-1 in Lackey's last 10 starts as an underdog.

                  WALK-OFFS:

                  1. Red Sox RHP Clay Buchholz (knee) had a scheduled simulated game pushed back from Saturday to Sunday due to field availability.

                  2. Tigers C Alex Avila, who was hit on the backswing by David Ortiz in Friday’s series opener, was held out of Saturday’s lineup as a precaution. He is considered day-to-day.

                  3. Boston 1B Mike Napoli (finger, calf) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on Sunday.

Sunday weather update: Thunderstorms at PNC Park

Thunderstorms are on the way to Pittsburgh which could put Sunday's game between the Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers in jeopardy.

There is currently a 90 percent chance of precipitation in the forecast for the NL Central matchup, escalating to 100 percent as the game progresses.

Yovani Gallardo gets the ball for the division-leading Brewers facing off against Jeff Locke of the Pirates.

Rockies mystified by Kershaw and the Dodgers

The Colorado Rockies may have the top offense in the MLB, but they have not been able to solve Clayton Kershaw. In Kershaw's last six starts against Colorado, the Rockies have come away with one win.

Kershaw has held the the Rockies scoreless in three of those games and has strukout at least eight batters four times. Those six starts have seen the Rockies average a terrible 1.8 runs per game.

Harang paying out for totals bettors

Not too many people expected the resurgence we've seen from Aaron Harang this season and though the hype has died down, he is still a solid play for bettors.

Harang has 13 starts so far this season for the Atlanta Braves. In those 13 starts, Harang has a 4-8-1 over/under record. Only twice all season long has Harang had more than two runs notched against him and has only allowed 26 runs in his 13 starts.

The Braves will finish their weekend series against the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday.

Wheeler underwhelming for Mets as dogs

The New York Mets have not had a lot to be excited about this season and that's not likely to change with Zach Wheeler on the mound. The Mets are a lowly 2-8 in Wheeler's last 10 starts as the underdog.

Wheeler has a 2-5 record with a 3.89 ERA this season.

NBA roundup: Jazz step outside franchise to hire Snyder
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Utah Jazz introduced new coach Quin Snyder in a press conference Saturday.

Snyder, the former Missouri coach, spent last season as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks. Snyder signed a three-year contract with a team option for a fourth year, according to reports. He replaces Tyrone Corbin, who was not offered a new contract after the season.

Snyder is the Jazz's eighth head coach and the first hired outside the organization since 1979.

"For a coach to have the loyalty of the ownership group, you feel you don't need to skip steps," Snyder said. "It's a process and sometimes there is pressure to accelerate that process but we want to build something that will last."

---Miami Heat forward LeBron James returned to practice Saturday at the San Antonio Spurs' practice facility.

James was forced out of Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday due to cramps stemming from dehydration. San Antonio's AT&T center heated up during the game when the air conditioning stopped working. James will be in Sunday's lineup for Game 2. The air conditioning in the arena has since been repaired.

"I'm doing well, doing a lot better," James said. "The soreness is starting to get out. I'm feeling better than I did yesterday and with another day, I should feel much better tomorrow."

---Memphis Grizzlies forward James Johnson was arrested Saturday morning for domestic assault causing bodily harm, according to Memphis TV station Fox 13.

Johnson had a domestic dispute with his wife at the couple's home about 2 a.m. Johnson's wife called police saying that he "hit her in the face and choked her," according to the Shelby County sheriff's office. She also told police that Johnson punched a hole in their bathroom door where she was holding their child. Officers said the victim gave the couple's baby to her mother. Johnson then pushed his wife's mother and took the baby before fleeing the scene. He later returned and was taken to jail.

Johnson averaged 7.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 18 minutes per game for the Grizzlies this past season. He will be an unrestricted free agent in July.

---The Los Angeles Lakers decided to eliminate Derek Fisher as a candidate for their heading coaching vacancy because they want someone with previous NBA coaching experience, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Lakers think highly of Fisher and believe he will be a good NBA coach or executive in the future but changed course in their methodical search to replace Mike D'Antoni, who stepped down at the end of the season.

Fisher has also been reported as a candidate for the New York Knicks' job. Fisher helped the Lakers win five NBA championships in the 2000s as point guard under then-coach Phil Jackson, now the Knicks' president.

Fisher averaged 5.2 points per game for the Oklahoma City Thunder this season. He will be 40 in August but has not made a decision about whether he will retire or play another season. He recently expressed a desire to coach at some point in the future.

---The Cleveland Cavaliers intend to offer point guard Kyrie Irving a maximum contract extension of five years for $90 million, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

July 1 is the first day the Cavaliers can offer Irving an extension when the free agency period starts. The Cavs are also looking to hire a new coach to replace the fired Mike Brown. Afterward, general manager David Griffin reportedly wants to discuss Irving's future with the new coach.

Irving averaged 20.8 points on 43 percent shooting, 6.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 35.2 minutes over 71 games this season.

---The Cavaliers contacted Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt about their coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports.

Blatt also coached Russia to a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics. Blatt, who is American-born, guided Maccabi to the European championship with a roster that included seven former U.S. college players.

Blatt is one of several candidates who have spoken to the Cavaliers but he has not been formally interviewed. The Cavs have been methodical in looking for a replacement for Mike Brown, whom they fired a month ago after a 33-49 season.

Strong pitcher's wind at Wrigley signals under

Gusts of up to 19 mph are expected for Sunday's meeting between the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field. The wind will be blowing in from left field which, according to recent trends, greatly favors the men on the mound.

There has been an average of 2.16 home runs per game this season at Wrigley, but with the wind blustering towards home plate from left that average drops significantly to 0.88.

Henderson Alvarez gets the call for the Marlins while Jake Arrieta counters for the Cubbies.

                              Orioles struggle with Johnson umpiring

The Baltimore Orioles are a lowly 1-9 in their last 10 games with Adrian Johnson calling balls and strikes and he'll be behind the plate for Sunday's meeting with the Oakland A's.

The O's and A's have split the first two games of the series after the Orioles were victorious 6-3 Saturday.

Scott Kazmir is slated the get the start for the Athletics while the Orioles will counter with Ubaldo Jimenez. The A's are currently -125 road faves for Sunday's matchup.

Heat traditionally a good candidate to bounce back after playoff loss

We know by now just how hard it is to keep LeBron James and the Miami Heat down, but here's further proof: The Heat have won 12 consecutive NBA post-season games following a loss.

After dropping the opening game by a lopsided score of 110-95 to the San Antonio Spurs, the Heat are looking to bounce back and tie things up before the series shifts to South Beach. King James is at his best when he's angry - you won't like him when he's angry - and after missing the last four minutes of the fourth quarter of Game 1 with leg cramps, LeBron has plenty of motivation to help his team even the series in Game 2.

The Heat are currently 4.5-point road dogs in Game 2 with a slight Covers consensus of 54 percent.

Opening line for Game 3 announced

According to Pinnacle.com, the New York Rangers have opened as -122 faves on the moneyline for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Despite being down 2-0, the books are banking on the Blueshirts' to strike back in The Big Apple. New York dropped two overtime heartbreakers in L.A. but have kept up with the Kings' high flying offense in a Final that has the makings of a long and tight series.
