        • Rays visit Yankees

          June 30, 2014

          Tampa Bay (35-49) at N.Y. Yankeees (41-39)

First pitch: Monday, 7:05 p.m. ET

Sportsbook.ag Line and Total: New York -110, Tampa Bay +100, Total: 8

The surging Rays travel to the Bronx to start a three-game set against the slumping Yankees on Monday night.

Tampa Bay has been having one of the most disappointing seasons of any team in baseball, currently sitting 10 games back in the AL East standings while holding the worst record in the American League. The Rays have played much better lately though, rattling off seven wins in their past 11 attempts; including 4-of-5 coming into this contest. Their recent four-game set against the Orioles went well, and their big 12-7 victory on Sunday game them a series win. The offense broke out with 11 extra-base hits including five that left the park. OF Matt Joyce (.274 BA) was huge for Tampa Bay in the series as he went 7-for-12 with two doubles, two homers, 6 RBI and five runs over his three games played. New York has had some trouble lately, losing six of its past eight games, all coming against fellow AL East opponents.

The Yankees lost the rubber match against the Red Sox on Sunday night by a score of 8-5, as they could not keep up with the 12 hits given up by their staff. SS Derek Jeter (.275 BA) recently celebrated his 40th birthday and is riding a five-game hitting streak where he has gone 7-for-18 with a home run and three RBI. This game will feature two youngsters on the mound, as 25-year-old RHP Chris Archer (4-5, 3.29 ERA) of the Rays goes up against 27-year-old RHP David Phelps (3-4, 4.35 ERA) for the Yankees. On the road, Tampa Bay has been horrible, going just 16-24 in away games this year, while New York is 18-20 in Yankee Stadium. The Rays have done well in this matchup over the past three seasons, holding a 26-18 edge against their division rivals while going 12-10 in the Bronx. Since becoming manager of the Yankees, Joe Girardi’s club has gone just 57-60 (.487) on Mondays while being 66-37 (.641) after having lost five or six of their past seven games. As far as injuries are concerned, the Rays continue to be without outfielders Wil Myers (wrist) and David DeJesus (hand) while SS Yunel Escobar (shoulder) is day-to-day. The Yankees come into this contest with no injuries to their offense.

Chris Archer earned himself a nice contract extension earlier this year and has piggy-backed on his success from last year when he put up a solid 3.22 ERA over 23 starts. He has improved his strikeout rate this year, bringing it up to 8.3 K/9, but has also lost some control while walking 3.5 batters per nine innings; up from 2.7 BB/9 last year. Another impressive stat from this year’s campaign has been his miniscule 0.29 HR/9 that he has allowed so far over 93 innings on the mound. Archer has allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his past eight outings, but did not do too well in his last start, going seven innings while giving up five runs (4 ER) on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. He’s been amazing against the Yankees over his short career, going 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA and 0.63 WHIP, and has an 18:3 K-to-BB ratio in that time (28.2 IP).

OF Jacoby Ellsbury has been great against the youngster, going 7-for-10 with a double and 2 RBI. On the other hand, OF Ichiro Suzuki is only 1-for-10 with two strikeouts in the matchup. The Rays’ bullpen is not what it used to be, as the group is 13-14 with a 3.97 ERA, and is 15-for-22 (68%) in save chances. Grant Balfour has lost his closer role and right now Tampa Bay is putting out pitchers based on situation while Joel Peralta (3.97 ERA, 1 save), Jake McGee (1.27 ERA, 3 saves) and Juan Oviedo (2.57 ERA, 1 save) are all getting looks in the ninth.

David Phelps began the year in a battle for the fifth rotation spot, but was relegated to the bullpen after being beat out by Michael Pineda. With injuries to the staff, Phelps has now started 10 games for the Yankees, putting up a 4.45 ERA and 1.41 WHIP as a starter (58.2 IP). His strikeout rate dropped dramatically when he moved back into the rotation, going from 12.3 K/9 in 11.2 relief inning to 7.4 K/9 as starter. In his last start, Phelps did not do well, getting blasted for six runs on eight hits and one walk over five innings, but he did record seven strikeouts as he earned a no-decision against the Blue Jays. He’s now faced the Rays four times as a starter, going 2-0 (3-1 team record) with a 2.82 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, as he has earned his two victories in each of his past two outings against them. Ben Zobrist has had no issues against Phelps, as he is 5-for-12 with two doubles and 2 RBI.

Meanwhile, OF Desmond Jennings and 3B Evan Longoria have combined to go 0-for-13 with two strikeouts in their careers against him. The Yanks bullpen is 10-13 this season with a 3.96 ERA while converting 25-of-36 (69%) saves. David Robertson (3.08 ERA, 18 saves) has blown two saves this year while putting up an impressive 47 strikeouts in just 26.1 innings of work (16.1 K/9).

          • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

            5) Mississippi State--Players who made 82% of their tackles return.

            4) Central Michigan-- Players who gained 87.6% of their total yards return.

            3) Indiana-- Offensive line returns players with 130 starts, #3 in nation.

            2) UL-Lafayette-- Have 12 senior starters, 91 starts back on OL.

            1) UT-San Antonio-- Have 19 senior starters, 143 starts back on OL.

            **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

            13) Baseball has a lot of young stars they should be promoting; Trout, Stanton, McCutchen, Kershaw, Harper, Cespedes, Abreu. etc..........but this is what we get on TV commercials promoting the All-Star Game on July 15........

THIS IS DEREK JETER's LAST ALL-STAR GAME!!!!!!
THIS IS DEREK JETER's LAST ALL-STAR GAME!!!!!!
OUTCOME DETERMINES HOME FIELD IN WORLD SERIES
THIS IS DEREK JETER's LAST ALL-STAR GAME!!!!!!
THIS IS DEREK JETER's LAST ALL-STAR GAME!!!!!!
THIS IS DEREK JETER's LAST ALL-STAR GAME!!!!!!

            Enough already, please.

            12) Very rarely see anything promoting baseball young stars, except for a Subway commercial Trout does. Baseball is a really great game; I'd feel better if I thought its TV partners felt the same way.

            11) David Wright has a bruised shoulder but isn't going on the DL; he also isn't with the Mets, since he had to go back to New York to have an MRI on the shoulder. Are there no MRI machines in Pittsburgh? Mets are playing with 24 guys, which hurts because they really don't have a backup at shortstop.

            10) Speaking of Pittsburgh, all four games sold out this weekend at PNC Park, and that was with the Senior PGA Tour in town. People are excited about the Pirates in the Steel City, at least until the Steelers start their training camp.

            9) One last Pittsburgh note: there are 446 bridges there, more than any city.

            8) Sunday was Kansas City's first walk-off win of the season. On June 29.

            7) Cincinnati used Aroldis Chapman four days in a row Wed-Sat this week, kind of an odd thing to do, since he throws 100 mph and is a valuable asset. Oakland had used its closer Sean Doolittle Fri/Sat and declared him off-limits Sunday, so the save went to Ryan Cook. Different organizations have different philosophies.

            6) Houston's Jose Altuve has had 2+ hits and 2+ stolen bases in each of his last four games, the first player to do that since 1917. Altuve is hitting .347.

            5) Cleveland's Josh Tomlin threw a 1-hitter with 11 strikeouts, no walks against the Mariners at Safeco Saturday night, just 8th pitcher in last 100 years to strike out 11 with no walks in a 1-hitter. He had gotten pounded in his previous three starts.

            4) How can set-up guys be on the All-Star team? If you're not a starter and you're not a closer, you don't rate that highly on your own team, certainly not enough to be one of the best 12 pitchers in the league.

            3) Mike Napoli is 24-55 (.436) this season in games John Lackey pitched.

            2) If the baseball playoffs started today, they'd look like this:
NL: Braves-Brewers-Giants. Wild Card: LA vs either Nats/Reds.
AL: Blue Jays-Tigers-A's. Wild Card: Angels-Seattle

            1) 20 writers didn't vote for Ted Williams the first time he was eligible for the Hall of Fame. Guy might've been the greatest hitter ever and 20 nitwits passed him by. No one has ever been unanimous for Cooperstown; no one ever will.

                        Monday, June 30

                        Harper set to return tonight

Finally. For the first time since the seventh inning on opening day, the Nationals will have their full roster in place today, when Bryce Harper is activated from the disabled list. Harper played in just 22 games this season before tearing a ligament in his left thumb when sliding into third base on a triple.

Harper never really got going prior to his injury, hitting just one homer and driving in nine through those 22 games played. He had shown signs of starting to heat up, however, going 5-for-11 with two extra-base hits and four RBIs in the three games before needing surgery to repair that torn ligament.

He went on the DL hitting .289/.352/.422. He'll come off it hoping to add some punch to an offensive attack that has been lacking consistency the last couple weeks.

If Harper's numbers on his rehab assignment are any indication, the two-plus months on the DL haven't done much to disrupt his timing at the plate.

In five rehab games split between high Single-A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg, Harper went 9-for-14 with a double, four homers, 11 RBIs, seven runs scored, five walks and one strikeout. He stole two bases and was caught stealing twice.

That's a .643/.737/1.571 slash line, folks. Against minor league pitching, yes. But if you're wondering why Harper played in just five rehab games as compared to the seven to nine that he had originally said he wanted, that's probably the reason why. He had nothing left to prove at the minor league level.

Carlos Beltran, NY Yankees - Out indefinitely

Beltran is suffering from soreness in his forearm. He will rest before resuming baseball activities and there is no timetable for his return.

                          Monday, June 30

Monday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Price has been poor value
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Kershaw's Magnificent Month

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw capped an unbelievable June in style, tossing seven shutout innings in Sunday's 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Kershaw finished June 6-0 with a 0.82 ERA, a stretch that featured 61 strikeouts against just four walks and a 28-inning shutout streak.

                          That's One Big Dog

Monday's action features only one major underdog play - the Colorado Rockies (+204, 7.5), who face Jordan Zimmermann and the host Washington Nationals. It's the Rockies' first game of the year as a 'dog of more than +200; they went 2-2 in such games last season.

                          The Price is Wrong

David Price will look to reverse a bizarre trend Tuesday as he leads the Tampa Bay Rays into New York for a date with the Yankees. Price has been a sinkhole for betters so far, earning $-466 - the lowest total for any pitcher whose team actually has a winning record in his starts (9-8).

                          Pitching Notes

                          * Boston Red Sox right-hander Jake Peavy may be one of the worst value plays in baseball ($-845), but at least he has consistently paid off Under bettors. Peavy enters Monday's game against the visiting Cubs (+125, 8.5) 1-6 O/U in his last seven starts, and 4-11 O/U for the year.

                          * Kansas City Royals ace James Shields has trended the other way as he prepares to face the host Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. Shields is a sensational 7-1 O/U in his last eight starts and 12-4 O/U on the year, tied with Justin Verlander and Stephen Strasburg for the most Overs in the majors.

                          Hitting Notes

                          * Houston Astros sparkplug Jose Altuve is heating up, posting four straight multi-hit, multi-steal games to raise his average for the season to .347. The Astros are 3-1 SU and 1-3 O/U over that stretch; they open a series against visiting Seattle (-102, 7.5) Monday evening.

                          * Miami catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia may have some trouble at the plate Tuesday night as his Marlins square off against A.J. Burnett and the Philadelphia Phillies. Saltamacchia has been dreadful versus Burnett in his career ,going just 2-for-17 with 10 strikeouts.
                          Totals Streak

Oakland Athletics (6-1 O/U): The Athletics came within a hair's breadth of making it seven straight overs Sunday, missing by a single run en route to a 4-3 victory over host Miami. Oakland ends its first half of the season with a league-best 51 wins and a 41-37-3 O/U mark.

                          Prop of the Day

Bettors should consider going big in Washington, where the Nationals are +400 at -4.5. Zimmermann has allowed just five earned runs over his previous five starts, while Rockies rookie starter Yohan Flande was torched for four runs over five innings in his major-league debut five days ago.

                          Injury Notes

                          * New York Mets starter Dillon Gee threw 2 2/3 solid innings during a rehab start in Lower-A over the weekend as he works his way back from a strained lat muscle. The Mets are 4-4 SU and 4-4 O/U in Gee's eight starts this season; he's 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA through 52 2/3 innings.

                          * Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista grounded out as a pinch-hitter Sunday in his first game action in a week. The Blue Jays went 3-3 S/U, 3-3 O/U and lost 66 units in Bautista's absence; he's expected to return to the lineup Tuesday against visiting Milwaukee.

                          Weather Watch

                          * Wind at U.S. Cellular Field will be blowing in from right field at 16 mph for Monday's game between the Chicago White Sox (+137, 8.5) and the visiting Los Angeles Angels. Teams averaged just 6.5 runs and 1.67 homers in six games under similar conditions in 2013, well below stadium averages.

                          * Nationals Park will see wind blowing out to left field at 9 mph for Tuesday's matchup between the Nationals and Colorado. The home team went 6-2 SU but just 2-6 O/U in eight games under similar wind conditions last season.
