    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Manhattan hoop coach Steve Masiello finally got his college degree, in time to go recruiting in July. Bigger schools missed the boat by not hiring this guy.

-- Mets are 3-0 since firing their hitting coach; they've allowed only three runs in the three games. Those two facts are not related.

-- Royals re-assigned their hitting coach Thursday, then immediately won 8-6 in ten innings at Toronto. Could soon be open season on hitting coaches.

-- Could somebody remind me why the Reds fired Dusty Baker?

-- Thursday night in Arizona, kids got in free to the Reds-Diamondbacks game if they came to the game with an adult who paid to get in. Good deal.

-- Rangers knocked Montreal out of Stanley Cup playoffs; last time a Canadian franchise won Lord Stanley's Cup was 1993.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here........

    13) So this guy from Microsoft bid $2B to buy the Clippers; he once tried to buy the Sacramento Kings and move them to Seattle, where Phil Jackson would've run the franchise. Wonder if Jackson wishes he were a free agent now.

The NBA might be more popular around the world than it is in this country, which may be why the Clippers' price tag was so high. NBA will have two regular season games in other countries next year, one in London, one in Mexico City.

    12) You want to know which player a basketball coach trusts? One guy for sure is the player who inbounds the ball on late-game out of bounds plays. Has to be a good passer with a good basketball IQ, and it won’t be your star player, since that’s usually the person you’re trying to inbound the ball to.

    11) Its pretty sad when Lebron James gets criticized for passing the ball to an open teammate on the last possession of Game 5; its what annoys me about the NBA, the mentality that the star player has to be a ballhog and shoot on the last possession, come hell or high water.

    10) We can all rest a little easier; Hunter Pence got his motorized scooter back. Someone returned the stolen scooter to the Giants’ clubhouse.

    9) Speaking of the Giants, Tim Lincecum got pinch-hit for in a scoreless game in the bottom of the 5th Wednesday night, when he was pitching a no-hitter. He had already thrown 96 pitches anyway. Giants shut the Cubs out for the second day in a row, after Chicago had pounded them Monday night.

    8) Houston Astros are playing better; they won their last six games and have a budding star in OF George Springer, whose been pounding the ball ever since he got picked off in the 9th inning of a game in Anaheim couple weeks ago.

    7) Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ owner Malcolm Glazer is the third NFL owner to pass away this off-season; at age 85, he was also the youngest of the three. Bucs are expected to stay in the Glazer family, rather than being sold.

    6) Titans’ backup QB Charlie Whitehurst has always worn #6, but his new team already has a #6, punter Brett Kern. Apparently the two arm-wrestled for the number and Kern won. Not sure that’s a good sign when your punter beats one of your quarterbacks arm-wrestling.

    5) 49ers’ TE Vernon Davis forfeited a $200,000 workout bonus this offseason; must be nice when you can just give away $200,000 because you don’t feel like doing what your employers asked.

    4) First 20:00 OT of the Kings-Chicago playoff game Wednesday took 26:45 in real time to play. Very few stoppages, very entertaining, good stuff.

    3) So Rory McIlroy dumped his girlfriend 10 days ago, then won a tournament in England, and now shoots a 63 at the Memorial to lead by three shots. What does this tell us? Coincidence? Better focus? Was Caroline Wozmiacki a dark cloud?

    2) "Dark cloud" is a great term; frst time I ever heard it used was by a minor league manager who accused a sportswriter of being "a dark cloud" because his team lost every time the writer covered his team. Sportswriter involved was Bill Scheft, who is a now a writer for Late Night with David Letterman.

    1) Two years ago, A’s 3B Scott Sizemore blew his knee out the first day of spring training, which put Oakland in a bind, since they had no one else who was a legit third baseman; they tried Josh Donaldson there in April, but the converted minor league catcher didn’t hit at all, so when Detroit released Brandon Inge in April, A's signed him and he did well, but Inge’s shoulder gave out, so Donaldson was brought back to the majors in mid-August, after he had hit .153 in his earlier trial at 3B.

Donaldson went 26-66 the rest of August, raised his average to .241 for the season, had a couple of huge hits in the playoffs, then had a tremendous 2013. Now he’s going to be an All-Star this season for the first time, a great story for the former 1st-round draft pick who took longer than usual to become a star, but is now one of the best 3B in baseball. Good for him.

Game of the Day: Pacers at Heat
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-6.5, 183)

      Miami leads series 3-2.

LeBron James is coming off the worst playoff performance of his career but the Miami Heat are still in control of the Eastern Conference finals. James and the Heat will attempt to close out the Indiana Pacers when they host Game 6 on Friday. James was plagued by foul trouble and played only 24 minutes in Game 5, managing a playoff career-low seven points on 2-of-10 shooting while Paul George dominated for the Pacers.

George scored 31 of his 37 points in the second half, including 21 in the fourth quarter, as Indiana overcame a rough first half and earned a 93-90 victory at home in Game 5. “The light needs to be on green for all of us,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel told reporters. “You need to go. You need to attack. You need to be aggressive. Paul took it and ran with it and took it to a crazy level.” Even with James off the floor half the game the Heat still had a chance in the final moments thanks to some strong 3-point shooting and a second straight big game from center Chris Bosh.

      TV:
      8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

      LINE HISTORY:
Miami opened as a 6.5-point favorite and jumped to as high as -7 before money took the spread back to -6.5. The total opened 183.5 and fell to 183 with action on the Under.

      INJURY WATCH:
      Miami - Chris Anderson (Ques/thigh)

      ABOUT THE PACERS:
George went 8-of-10 from the field in the fourth quarter and hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions late to give Indiana just enough cushion to hold off a late push from Miami. The All-Star forward got a break on the defensive end by not having to guard James most of the night. George does not expect things to come quite so easily in Game 6. “It’s going to be tough,” George told reporters. “We’re not expecting any of this to be easy, this whole trip. We’ve got to do one possession at a time down in Miami, and we can’t turn the ball over in Game 6. This Game 6 is going to be about performing like champions.”

      ABOUT THE HEAT:
Miami does not need a lesson in playing like champions and is still on the verge of its fourth straight trip to the NBA Finals. James had more turnovers (three) than field goals in Game 5 but Rashard Lewis picked up some of the slack with six 3-pointers and the Heat still had a chance to win when James kicked a pass out to Bosh for a 3-pointer that failed to fall with 4.9 seconds left. “The game is reffed by the refs,” James told reporters. “They ref how they see it. We play it, and you live with the results.” Miami dominated Games 3 and 4 at home and is 7-0 this postseason in its own arena.

      TRENDS:

      * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Miami.
      * Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
      * Home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
      * Pacers are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings.

      CONSENSUS:
72 percent of action is on Miami -6.5 while 75 percent of bets are on Over 183.

Blackhawks at Kings: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Los Angeles Kings (-127, 5)

After traveling a long and windy road to stave off elimination, the Chicago Blackhawks need to repeat the feat in Game 6 of the Western Conference final on Friday to keep alive their quest for back-to-back Stanley Cup titles. Veteran Michal Handzus burned his former team by scoring 2:04 into double overtime as Chicago snapped a three-game losing skid with a 5-4 triumph over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. "You see the momentum in this series, how it can shift," Patrick Kane said following his mammoth four-assist performance. "L.A.'s had a lot of it. I think it's our turn now to hold on to it and keep that momentum."

Chicago has struggled with packing momentum into a suitcase, winning just two of eight road games in the postseason. The Blackhawks dropped both contests at Staples Center in the series, losing a 4-3 decision in Game 3 before suffering a 5-2 setback two days later. "They're still do-or-die; we're still one win away from moving on," Los Angeles rookie Tanner Pearson said. "So I think it's going to be the same attitude going in. Hopefully, we come out with a victory."

        TV:
9 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

        ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS:
After securing just one point in the first four contests, Kane adapted well as coach Joel Quenneville shuffled up his line with his team facing elimination. The reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner was paired with Brandon Saad and Andrew Shaw in Game 5, and trio combined for nine points (one goal, eight assists). "I thought Saad and Shaw were effective (in Game 4) - Kane can add to the mix," Quenneville said. "They had a good couple of periods there, generated some zone time and chances and scored a nice goal."

        ABOUT THE KINGS:
Anze Kopitar recorded his league-leading 23rd point by notching an assist on Marian Gaborik's NHL-best 11th goal during the first period on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Slovenian has recorded at least one point in 16 of 19 games in the playoffs. As for Gaborik, his goal total trails only Hall-of-Famers Wayne Gretzky (15, 1993) and Luc Robitaille (12, 1991) for the most in franchise postseason history.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
        * Home team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
        * Over is 6-2-1 in Blackhawks last nine road games.

        OVERTIME:

        1. Chicago has scored just one power-play goal on the road in 24 opportunities during the postseason.

        2. Kings C Jeff Carter notched an assist on Pearson's goal midway through the second period on Wednesday. Both players are riding six-game point streaks.

        3. Kane's four-assist effort was the team's first in a playoff contest since Steve Larmer in 1990.

Underdogs have a good day on diamond

It was a good night to bet on underdogs against the runline in Major League Baseball action Thursday night.

Underdogs went 7-3 against the runline last night, cashing in a t a mark of 70 percent. Road dogs were the most successful going 5-1, while home dogs were just 2-2.

Away dogs have been a solid bet all season, hitting at almost 64 percent a third of the way through the season.

Mariners' 2B Robinson Cano, questionable Friday

Cano was a late scratch for Thursday's game against the Angels, because he was feeling ill. He is questionable for Friday's game against the Tigers.

Nine straight games with an RBI for Giants' Sandoval

The year was 2000. The player was Barry Bonds, one of the most

polarizing and productive players in baseball history.

From Sept. 4 to Sept. 13, Bonds knocked in 16 runs in a nine-game stretch, helping

San Francisco clinch the National League West title. It was the last time a Giant

produced RBIs in nine straight games -- until Thursday night's 6-5 win over St. Louis.

Third baseman Pablo Sandoval's sixth-inning solo homer off Jaime Garcia enabled him

to match Bonds' run. It was his 14th RBI in that stretch.

What impressed manager Bruce Bochy about it is that it came from the right side of

the plate, where Sandoval has struggled mightily to find a rhythm. He came into Thursday

                  night's game batting only .169 in 65 right-handed at-bats as opposed to .286 as a lefty.

Favorites cover nine straight in conference finals

With the San Antonio Spurs big 117-89 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of their best-of-seven series Thursday night, they kept favorites hot against the spread in the conference finals.

The Spurs easily covered the 5-point spread, making favorites now 9-1 ATS in both conference finals and have covered nine in a row.

The only game the favorite didn't cover was Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final when the Miami Heat lost as slight 1.5-points favorites.

The Heat are 7.5-point favorites for their Game 6 showdown with the Indiana Pacers Friday night.

                  NHL

                  Friday, May 30

Rangers +110 to win Cup after eliminating Habs

The New York Rangers are now listed at +120 to hoist the Stanley Cup above their heads for the first time since 1994 after their 1-0 Game 6 victory that sent the Montreal Canadiens home for the season Thursday night.

The Rangers were the first team to book their ticket to the Cup Finals, but still aren't the favorite according to Sportsbook.ag.

The Los Angeles Kings are still listed as the favorites at win the Stanley Cup at +110. The Kings lead the Western Conference Final 3 games to 2 over the Chicago Blackhawks (+475 to win the Cup), with Game 6 to be played in Los Angeles Friday night.

Red Sox DH David Ortiz, probable Friday

Ortiz missed Thursday's game against the Braves with a calf injury but is expected to return for Friday's game against the Rays.

Votto won't come off DL when eligible

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto is eligible to come off the disabled list Saturday, but manager Bryan Price said there is no timetable for his return from a strained left quad.

Votto is getting treatment in Cincinnati and Price said he will considered be day to day.

"He's been out for a while," Price told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "He hasn't seen live pitching. The protocols moving ahead are undecided. It really is a day to day process."

Votto is taking grounders in practice and will next take batting practice when he is ready.

Cain return Saturday not a sure thing

Manager Bruce Bochy said so Thursday. Besides the words, his tone also suggested that he and head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner were not convinced completely that Cain is ready to play, after watching the right-hander run and throw off flat ground at Busch Stadium.

“He ran well,” Bochy said, but in the next breath added, “We want to be sure, 100 percent.”

The team will decide Friday whether Cain will take his expected turn Sunday.

                              Saturday, May 31

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Springer powering Astros
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Springer has underdog 'Stros on a roll

The Houston Astros have now reeled off six straight victories, obviously all as underdogs, thanks in large part to superstar in the making George Springer, who has seven HRs in the last seven games. They are just slight +104 dogs for their second game of their series against Baltimore.

                              Rays, Red Sox rematch

The Tampa Bay Rays (-126) and the Boston Red Sox meet for the second time in a week, this time at Fenway. The Rays swept away the Sox, culminating in a bench clearing brawl. But the roles have reversed a series later with the Sox sweeping away the Atlanta Braves in four games, while the Rays got swept by the Blue Jays.

Verlander an underdog for first time this season

Detroit Tigers starter Justin Verlander has struggled in his last three starts giving up 16 earned runs in 17.1 innings, resulting in him being listed as a slight +100 dog against the Seattle Mariners Friday night. It is the first time in 12 starts this season he has been listed as an underdog.

                              Pitching notes

                              * Two of the NL's top pitchers meet when Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants visit the Adam Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals (-144). The under is 9-1-1 in Bumgarner's last 11 starts as a road underdog, while Wainwright is 4-0 in his last four starts vs. the Giants.

                              * Josh Beckett makes his first start for the Dodgers (-128) since pitching a no-hitter against he Philadelphia Phillies last Sunday. Beckett has now won three straight decisions and given up just five runs in his last 27 innings pitched, with the over going 10-3 in his last 13 starts as a favorite.

                              Hitting notes

                              * Despite the Toronto Blue Jays nine game winning Thursday against Kansas City, Edwin Encarnacion is still on fire, hitting a pair of 2-run homers, tying the AL record for homers in May with 16. The Jays who averaged 5.9 run per game in the last 10 are just 6-4 over/under in that stretch.

                              * Speaking of the Royals, they made a coaching change before their 8-6 extra innings win over Toronto, naming Dal Sveum their new hitting coach. The Royals who went 3-7 SU and 6-3-1 over/under in their last 10 games, are last in the majors with 21 homers and last in the AL in runs and slugging percentage.

                              Totals streak

New York Mets (1-6 over/under): The Mets have found that nice balance of good pitching and not hitting, usually reserved for the likes of the Padres, scoring just 3.28 runs per game over the past seven, but only giving up 2.14 runs per game to opponents over that same stretch. The total for Friday's game vs. the Phillies is at 7.5.

                              Injury notes

                              * Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto is eligible to come off the disabled list Saturday, but the team said there is no timetable for the former MVP's return from a strained left quad. The Reds are 5-8 SU (-$109) and 8-5 over/under in Votto's absence.

                              * San Francisco Giants starter Matt Cain is expected to start Saturday against the Cardinals after missing his last start with a hamstring injury. The Giants are just 3-5 in Cain's eight starts this season, totaling -$212 on the money list.

                              Weather Watch

There is a chance of thunderstorms at Busch Stadium in St. Louis for the Cardinals matchup with the San Francisco Giants. There is also a 45 percent chance of rain with a 5-6 mph wind blowing in towards home plate from right field.

                              Umpire Stat of the Day

The under is 5-0 in umpire Paul Nauert's last five games behind the plate for games the Pittsburgh Pirates are involved in. The Pirates visit the Dodgers Friday, with a game total currently at 7.
