    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Top 6 college football teams for this season, according to The Sporting News

    6) Stanford-- Need QB Hogan to step up, play even better.

    5) Auburn-- Are going to have to outscore opponents; defense is a ??

    4) Alabama-- Major ?? at quarterback, are loaded everywhere else.

    3) Florida State-- Have to keep Jameis out of the seafood aisle in the store.

    2) Oregon-- Have a new defensive coordinator, but same QB this year.

    1) Oklahoma-- Spanked Crimson Tide in Sugar Bowl last year.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here.......

    13) I wonder if Japanese baseball fans get mad when their star players bolt for the big money in this country? I mean, Masahiro Tanaka was 24-0 for his team last year; it has to be a big blow to lose him and get nothing back.

    12) Of the 92 pitchers currently on the disabled list, 31 of them are recovering from Tommy John surgery.

    11) Texas Rangers' season from hell continues; Prince Fielder is probably going to have season-ending neck surgery; he hadn't missed a game in 3+ years before joining Texas this season, had played in 547 consecutive games.

    10) NBA appointed this guy Dick Parsons to be CEO of the Clippers; now it comes out that he may have lied about playing basketball at Hawai'i in the early 60's, as a ridiculously embarrassing story gets worse every day for the league. Deadspin had a report questioning whether he ever played varsity ball at Hawai'i, then his people backtracked and said he played freshman ball, but Hawai'i has no record of it.

    9) Would this Clipper debacle have played out any differently if David Stern was still the commissioner? Why didn't Stern ever do anything about Sterling?

    8) Cincinnati transfer Jermaine Lawrence surfaced at Manhattan, where he will help coach Steve Masiello get a big-paying job elsewhere next spring. Can't believe a school like Oregon State didn't ignore Masiello's resume issues and give him a big contract to coach there-- he is obviously a very good coach.

    7) UNLV will have five new starters next fall; PG Deville Smith has transferred, as Dave Rice cleans house heading forward. Smith hasn't said where he is going next; he is a pretty good player who could really help a mid-major team.

    6) Astros' pitcher Jarred Cosart has a 12.80 ERA in the first inning this season, worst in MLB; he generally pitches pretty well after that first inning.

    5) You watch Ryan Howard play 1B in Philly and you cringe; he's lost so much mobility, and he's hitting only .213 (10-47) against lefties. Not good.

    4) Kansas football coach Charlie Weis is still the highest-paid member of the Notre Dame athletic department; he somehow hoodwinked the Irish into breaking the bank to pay him when he was head coach in South Bend, and it is the gift that keeps on giving. Read somewhere this week that since Notre Dame fired him in 2009, he's been paid around $9,800 per day, every day. Oy.

    3) Love the TV camera inside the nets at NHL games; wonder how much it costs if a slap shot drills one of those cameras and breaks it.

    2) The catch Yasiel Puig made at Citi Field in the second inning last night might be the best non-fence catch I've ever seen. Tremendous. He also made two pretty bad baserunning blunders that took LA out of innings- nothing is dull around Puig.

Best catch I've ever seen was Gary Matthews Jr over the center field fence in Arlington, saving a game in the last inning.

    1) Congratulations to my friend Joanne, who is retiring today after 44 years of working for New York State. A very nice person who will be missed, we wish her well in the next chapter in her life.

      Guys,

The long sheets come from Stat Fox and they've been inaccessible for days. Yesterday, the short sheets, which come from ESPN, started showing a message that says their trends are temporarily unavailable. I don't know how much longer we have to put up with it but we're going to be without either for a while.

It's a bit of an inconvenience for me because I find the "head to head" sections of the long sheets to be very helpful.

      I'll keep watching for them.

Good luck today, guys! Have a fun, safe weekend.

                Friday, May 23

Thunderstorm on the way in Philadelphia

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies open a three-game series in Philadelphia Friday, as long as mother nature allows them to.

There is a chance of 32 percent chance for rain and a chance for thunderstorms expected for right around the time the first pitch should be thrown. There is also a 12 mph wind blowing across he field towards first base.

The projected starts are Clayton Kershaw (2-1, 4.41 ERA) for the Dodgers and Roberto Hernandez (2-1, 3.98) for the Phillies. The Dodgers are -178 favorites.

Underdogs have a solid day on the diamond

Another day on the diamond and another solid day for underdogs in major league action Thursday.

Underdogs went 8-4 against the runline Thursday, hitting at a mark of nearly 67 percent.

The dogs performance was highlighted by the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2 win over the Boston Red Sox. The Jays were +136 dogs heading into the game.

Two worst money teams Red Sox, Rays, start series Friday

The two worst money teams in baseball start a three-game series Friday when the Tampa Bay Rays host the Boston Red Sox.

The Rays, who were picked by many to win the American League East this season, are dead last in the division and because of this are the worst money team in the majors at -$1,418.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox seem to be suffering from a World Series hangover. They have lost seven in a row and are second to last in money at -$1,269.

The projected starters for Friday night are John Lackey (5-3, 4.01 ERA) for the Red Sox and Chris Archer (3-2, 4.59 ERA) for the Rays.

Hendriks gets call to start for Blue Jays on Friday

Thursday was a day for the Toronto Blue Jays to celebrate a three-game sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

It also was a day for right-hander Liam Hendriks to celebrate.

Before left-hander Mark Buehrle allowed two runs over seven strong innings against the Sox, manager John Gibbons disclosed that Hendriks will be recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to start Friday night against the Oakland Athletics.

Hendriks, 25, has a chance to stay in the rotation, too, as the No. 5 starter. Because of days off in the schedule, the Jays haven't needed a fifth starter since Dustin McGowan lost the job on May 14.

In nine games at Buffalo, Hendriks posted a 1.48 ERA and 36 strikeouts while walking only three batters in 48 2/3 innings. For now, he gets the nod in the rotation over veteran Todd Redmond, who started 14 games last season and has pitched in long relief this year.

The Jays will have to make a roster move to open a spot for Hendriks. Lefty reliever Rob Rasmussen could be optioned to Triple-A, or the Jays could opt to designate struggling reliever Esmil Rogers for assignment after he posted a 6.97 ERA in 20 2/3 innings.

Braun's side ailment adds to Brewers' injury woes

The Milwaukee Brewers just can't seem to keep their top players healthy.

Ryan Braun, who was on the 15-day disabled list earlier this month due to a right oblique strain, left the Brewers' 5-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves after two at-bats Thursday because of tightness in his right side.

The right fielder was listed as day-to-day, and he will be evaluated further Friday.

"Oblique again. Oblique soreness," manager Ron Roenicke said when asked about Braun after the game. "There was concern he was going to hurt it."

Braun is hitting .212 (7-for-33) with two doubles and a homer since coming off the DL on May 13. For the season, he is batting .289 with seven homers and 19 RBIs in 31 games.

The Brewers are already without cleanup hitter Aramis Ramirez, sidelined since May 10 because of a strained left hamstring. The third baseman doesn't think that he will be ready to come off the 15-day disabled list when eligible Monday.

Braves' Walden out at least three more weeks

Jordan Walden won't have a short stay on the disabled list, his projected return now pushed back until at least mid-June.

The Atlanta Braves right-hander reliever, who hasn't pitched since May 4 because of a strained left hamstring, is still a couple of weeks away from being cleared to throw off the mound.

Giants' Casilla suffers Grade 2 strain legging out grounder

The San Francisco Giants will be without their valuable setup man Santiago Casilla for about four weeks due to the right hamstring strain he suffered Wednesday night running out a grounder he hit with two out in the ninth inning.

Casilla underwent an MRI after the game and was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain. Grade 1 is mild. Grade 2 is medium and Grade 3, the most severe, is a tear.

"We were shocked how fast he was going," manager Bruce Bochy said before the Giants and Rockies played a game that was suspended in the bottom of the sixth with the score tied at 2. "I don't think that hamstring's ever seen that type of speed from legs."

Game of the Day: Rangers at Tigers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Detroit Tigers (-170, 8)

The Texas Rangers had no trouble scoring runs without Prince Fielder in the series opener with the host Detroit Tigers and may have to do without his services for a long time. The first baseman who was acquired from the Tigers – with this four-game series slated to be his first trip back to the Motor City – will undergo neck surgery on Tuesday that may sideline him for the remainder of the season. Not having Fielder wasn’t a hindrance as Texas rolled to a 9-2 win on Thursday.

Fielder will undergo surgery to repair a herniated disk and the recovery time is approximately four months, which would probably put him on the shelf for the rest of the campaign. “We’re looking forward to getting this guy healthy and seeing what he can do,” Texas general manager Jon Daniels told reporters after Thursday’s victory. “But that’s in 2015 and beyond. We’re going to miss this guy.” Detroit has lost a season-worst four straight games after being clobbered in the opener.

7:08 p.m. ET, MLB Network, KTXA (Texas), FSN Detroit

                  LINE HISTORY:
The Tigers opened as -170 home favorites. The run total opened at 8.

                  INJURY REPORT:
Texas: 1B Prince Fielder - out for season (neck)

                  POWER RANKINGS:
                  Texas -137, Detroit (-204)

                  PITCHING MATCHUP:
Rangers RH Scott Baker (0-0, 3.38 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (1-2, 2.89)

Baker is making his second major-league appearance of the season as the Texas starting rotation continues to be besieged by injuries. He received a no-decision against Colorado on May 7 when he allowed two runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings and is 7-5 with a 4.71 ERA in 23 career starts against Detroit. Baker, who went 38-22 from 2008-10 with Minnesota, last won a big-league game on July 23, 2011 when he defeated the Tigers.

Sanchez has been roughed up badly in three previous career starts against the Rangers as he has allowed 24 hits and seven walks in just 12 1/3 innings while going 0-3 with a 9.49 ERA. He returned from an absence related to a blister issue to beat Boston in his last outing, giving up two runs (one earned) and five hits in five innings. Sanchez has struggled with his command with 14 walks in only 28 innings.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Under is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Detroit
                  * Rangers are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.
                  * Rangers are 1-7 in their last eight games as an underdog.
                  * Over is 4-0 in the Tigers last four games overall.

                  CONSENSUS:
Sixty-seven percent of the wagers are on the Tigers at -170.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Felix is no sure thing
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    NL East a Push Party

The Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies played to a push Thursday, with the Marlins scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to prevail 4-3. That gives the National League East a combined 25 pushes so far this season; no other division has more than 16.

                    Too Good to Be True?

Bettors should be wary of Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez and his -248 pricetag for Friday's home encounter with the Houston Astros. Hernandez is just 1-6 against the moneyline in his last seven starts as a favorite of -160 or greater, including a woeful 0-3 mark so far in 2014.

                    Battle of the Basement

The teams with the worst money records do battle Friday as the Tampa Bay Rays ($-1,418) and Boston Red Sox ($-1,269) do battle in the series opener at Tropicana Field. The Rays (+106, 7.5) haven't finished in the red since 2009, while Boston won an AL East-best $1,864 last season.

                    Pitching Notes

                    * New York Mets starter Bartolo Colon has already surrendered nine home runs through his first nine starts; the veteran right-hander allowed just 14 longballs all of last season, and hasn't surrendered more than 21 in a campaign since 2005. Colon and the Mets (-119, 7.5) host Arizona on Friday.

                    * Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, coming off the worst start of his career in a loss to the Diamondbacks, is 7-2 O/U in his last nine starts after going 3-11-2 O/U in his previous 16 outings. Kershaw will look to bounce back Friday against the host Philadelphia Phillies (+160, 7.5).

                    Hitting Notes

                    * The Toronto Blue Jays swatted three home runs in Thursday's sweep-capping win over Boston and now has 67 dingers on the season - the most in the majors and the fourth-highest total through 48 games in team history. Toronto is 28-18-2 O/U as it opens a weekend series against visiting Oakland (-106, 9).

                    * Cleveland Indians slugger Carlos Santana lifted his average to .153 with a pair of hits in Thursday's 8-7 win over Baltimore. Santana has just seven multi-hit games all season; the Indians are 4-3 S/U and 7-0 O/U in those games entering Friday's showdown with Baltimore.

                    Totals Streak

New York Yankees (0-8 O/U): The loss of outfielder Carlos Beltran to an elbow injury appears to have had an adverse effect on the Yankees' offense; they've scored more than four runs just once in their past eight games, though they're an impressive 5-3 over that stretch.

                    Prop of the Day

A late rally could pay off when the Pittsburgh Pirates (-106, 7) and Washington Nationals face off at PNC Park. The prop for the team scoring first losing the game is +215; the teams rank third in the majors in batting average from the seventh inning on (.261), while the Pirates are second in homers (19) and the Nationals fifth (17) over that span.

                    Injury Notes

                    * Baltimore Orioles shortstop Manny Machado was removed from Thursday's game as a precaution after experiencing tightness in his groin. The Orioles are 13-12 SU, 12-12-1 O/U and +214 units for the season with Machado on the sidelines as they gear up for a Friday

                    * Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun left Thursday's game against Atlanta in the fifth inning after feeling tightness in his side. Braun missed 14 games with a similar injury earlier this season, a stretch during which Milwaukee went 6-8 S/U, 10-4 O/U and lost 222 units.

                    Weather Watch

                    * The wind at PNC Park will blow out to center field at 8 mph for Friday's game between the Pirates and Nationals. Teams combined to average 1.58 home runs - slightly better than the average of 1.35 - in 12 games under similar conditions last season.

Twins, Giants meet in series of top money teams

The San Francisco Giants host the Minnesota Twins in an interleague series this weekend, that is surprisingly a matchup of the top two money teams in baseball.

The Giants aren't too big of a surprise as the MLB's top money team at $1,080. They lead the NL West at 29-18.

The big surprise is the Twins. A team no one expected anything from, sits at 23-21 for the season, just 4.5 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central. Good for $935, second only to the Giants.

San Francisco is currently a -164 fave for the first game of the series. Kyle Gibson (4-3, 4.20 ERA) is expected to take the mound for the Twins, while Tim Lincecum (3-3, 4.874 ERA) is on the hill for the Giants.

Angels' CF Mike Trout, probable Friday

Trout is suffering from tightness in his leg and did not play Wednesday. He is expected to play Friday against the Royals.

Rockies' OF Carlos Gonzalez, out Friday

Gonzalez left Wednesday's game with left index finger inflammation and did not play Thursday. He is not expected to be ready for Friday against the Braves.

Blackhawks excited to get Shaw back in lineup

If everything goes as planned, forward Andrew Shaw will return to the Chicago’s lineup for Game 3 on Saturday after missing roughly three weeks with a leg injury. Blackhawks coach coach Joel Quenneville is excited to see the 22-year-old’s return. Shaw will likely center the third line and provide the team with another secondary scoring threat as well as some more grit.

Chicago is looking to bounce back after coughing up a 2-0 lead by allowing six unanswered goals against Los Angeles on Wednesday. That defeat tied the series and cost Chicago its home ice advantage.
