    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Buffalo Bills tried to trade up for the #1 pick to draft Sammy Watkins, before winding up with the #4 pick. Is Matt Millen advising the Bills?

-- Francisco Liriano is 0-3 in nine starts, but Pirate bullpen won all six of his no-decisions.

-- Dodgers are 8-2 against Arizona, 15-19 against everyone else.

-- Giant broadcaster Duane Kuiper was questioning the viability of still holding the World Baseball Classic, with so pitchers getting hurt. WBC forces pitches to start training earlier, which of course results in more injuries later that year when they are pitching for the teams that pay their hefty salaries.

-- Refreshing to listen to Mets’ TV announcers question/criticize team strategy; doesn’t happen a lot, but enough to give them credibility.

-- Mets-Bronx game Thursday was remarkable on two fronts: It was the first game since 1944 where two starting pitchers making their MLB debut both got hits in their first AB. De Grom’s hit was the first hit by a Met pitcher all season. It was the only game since 1900 where two starting pitchers were making their MLB debut and the game was 0-0 after five innings.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Struggling Diamondbacks hired Tony Larussa to turn their program around, which is very bad news for GM Kevin Towers. Competition can be addicitive, and Larussa missed the winning/losing aspect of being part of a team. Funny that he is Kirk Gibson's boss now, seeing as Gibson's famous home run in 1988 beat the best A's team Larussa managed.

    12) Larussa was on the job for 12 hours and Arizona had already hung 18 runs on Clayton Kershaw and the hated Dodgers, beating them 18-7. Kershaw was chased during a 7-run second inning for Arizona.

    11) Speaking of the A's, Oakland pitcher Scott Kazmir got tossed in the second inning last night for bitching at plate ump Jerry Layne over balls/strikes. Because Bob Melvin is a great manager, the A's won anyway. Reliever Dan Otero threw 32 pitches and got 11 outs in relief of Kazmir, who needed 41 pitches to get four outs.

    11) Odd play in San Francisco last night; Brandon Hicks smacked a double off the right field wall, just missing a homer, but Marlin replay guys noticed that Hicks missed first base, Mike Redmond challenged it, and Hicks was called out. Because he missed first base, he doesn't even get credit for a hit.

    10) Miami's Giancarlo Stanton hit a triple to right-center, which is called triples alley because it is so deep, but later on, Stanton hit a homer in the same area, which righty hitters rarely do. Giant TV announcer have become such blatant homers; they acted like he popped out to second base. It was a titanic blast.

    9) If I'm pitching for the Mets and Juan Lagares isn't playing centerfield, I'm ticked off; Lagares is that good a fielder. He robbed Jason Werth of a home run Saturday.

    8) Phillies have already had two scoring droughts of 21+ innings this month, but they broke out of the second one in grand fashion Saturday, beating the Reds 12-1.

    7) How does BJ Upton stay in the major leagues? He has 29 hits, 56 strikeouts and is hitting .203 with nine RBI in 143 ABs. Not good.

    6) Texas Rangers have six guys on the 60-day DL, and now Martin Perez is out for the year with an elbow injury- their pitching staff has fallen apart.

    5) Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes is son-in-law of former big league pitcher Atlee Hammaker, who started the 1983 All-Star Game.

    4) Washington Nationals have to be concerned with Gio Gonzalez, who allowed eight first-inning runs in his last three starts, and is 0-2, 14.73 in last two starts.

    3) Penn State's baseball team turned two triple plays in a game vs Michigan State.

    2) Can never figure out why NBC runs a 2-hour program around a horse race, which is less than two minutes long. I mean, I understand they can sell commercials for it and they make money, but who would watch anything but the race?

    1) NHL is doing very well; league VP Bill Daly said the salary cap could go as high as $70M next year. Commish Gary Bettman isn't a popular guy, but the league is flourishing under his leadership, whether it is because of him or in spite of him.

McMurray holds off Harvick to win Sprint All-Star Race

Jamie McMurray, who won his first Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2002, held off a fast-closing Kevin Harvick to win his first Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday night at his favorite track.

Pole-sitter Carl Edwards won the final 10-lap segment, followed by McMurray, Harvick and Matt Kenseth.

Edwards and McMurray raced side-by-side for almost two laps before McMurray was able to grab command as Edwards got sideways and slide in behind his Chevrolet rival.

Harvick and Edwards then raced side-by-side for second for two laps before Harvick won. But McMurray was now 1.3 seconds ahead.

Harvick cut into the lead but he ran out of time as he finished 0.69 seconds back.

Kenseth finished third, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Clint Bowyer, Brian Vickers, Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski.

Kyle Busch was the leader at the end of the first segment. But he dropped back in the pack when he changed four tires while Hamlin elected not to pit and several others, including Keselowski and Kurt Busch, took on only two tires.

Kyle, trying to make his way back to the front, tried to make it three wide on lap 26, but Bowyer blocked him. Busch got into the back of Bowyer, who got sideways and clipped Busch as he dived underneath Bowyer. The contact sent Busch spinning, and he slammed into Joey Logano to bring out the first yellow flag of the night.

Just as Busch was spinning, Edwards was passing Hamlin for the lead. Edwards led the next nine laps until Kasey Kahne got by him to take the lead at the end of the second 20-lap segment.

Following the second segment, McMurray, Kenseth, Keselowski and Martin Truex Jr. decided not to pit. That put them at the head of the field as the green flag waved for the third 20-lap segment.

McMurray led laps 41-46 before Kahne raced him way back to the lead. Kahne led the rest of that segment to give him two segment victories as the All-Star race entered its final 30 laps.

Just a lap after the start of the fourth segment, Jeff Gordon suddenly slowed. "I think something broke," he said.

Truex ran into the back of Gordon and Greg Biffle slammed into the back of Truex to bring out the third caution flag.

McMurray was the leader when the green was waved again on lap 68.

On lap 76, Kevin Harvick bumped his way by McMurray to grab the lead. Harvick was able to pad his lead to 2.2 seconds when the yellow waved after the fourth 20-lap segment.

The running order was then repositioned based on the average finish for the first four segments prior to pit road being opened for the mandatory four-tire stop.

Qualifying for the All-Star race is a three-lap affair that includes a four-tire pit stop with no speed limit on pit road. Edwards won the pole for the second straight year, with an average speed of 146.915 mph. This is the only time during the season that this format is used.

      NOTES:
Kurt Busch arrived at Charlotte Motor Speedway with time to spare in his bid to be part of the unique qualifying format for the Sprint All-Star Race. Busch began the day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he made two four-lap qualifying runs. His average speed for the first 10-lap run was 229.256 mph. He upped that speed to 229.960 mph before heading for the airport and a flight to Charlotte. Busch will return to Indianapolis Sunday for the final qualifying session that will determine the starting lineup for the Indianapolis 500. Busch is trying to become the fourth driver to run both the 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

Carpenter leads first round of Indy 500 qualifying

Ed Carpenter led nine drivers who surpassed 230 mph Saturday in the first round of qualifications for the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In a six-hour session featuring 71 qualifying attempts by 33 entries, Carpenter turned in a four-lap average speed of 230.661 mph and led a blistering pace that resulted in the first qualifiers above 230 mph since 2003.

Joining Carpenter in the 230 club that will participate in the Fast Nine Shootout for the pole on Sunday were Carlos Munoz (230.460 mph), Helio Castroneves (230.432), James Hinchcliffe (230.407), Will Power (230.323), Marco Andretti (230.134), Simon Pagenaud (230.070), Josef Newgarden (230.033) and JR Hildebrand (230.027).

The top nine will run in reverse order Sunday to determine the Verizon P1 Award winner and pole-sitter for the May 25 Indy 500. Saturday's 10-33 finishers will re-qualify on Sunday to determine their starting positions.

"I think we have a good chance for the pole, but the field is very tight this year," Carpenter, driving No. 20 Fuzzy's Ultra Premium Vodka car, told IndyCar.com. "It will come down on who gets it right on the day for the pole. It really comes down to being perfect for four laps."

Carpenter set the tone early Saturday with a four-lap average speed of 230.114 mph. After being knocked to fifth, he turned in the session's best lap on his second try.

"Every day you come out you want to be the best you can be," said Carpenter, who won the pole in 2013 at 228.762 mph. "It's always fun being quickest at Indy. You get into these two days and you can't really think about the race or work on your race car. If you've got a fast car like the Fuzzy's guys, you try to do the best you can with it."

Kurt Busch is seeking to be the fourth driver to compete in the Indy 500 and the stock car race in Concord, N.C., the same day. He finished 10th in the Indy qualifying at 229.960 on Saturday.

"I've qualified a Pro Stock car on the quarter-mile. I've done the longest track on the NASCAR circuit (Talladega)," Busch said, "but to do four laps here ... just the sheer excitement of trusting a car with downforce going down into Turn 1 at 230 is indescribable.

"Qualifying at Indy you have to do it over 10 miles and you have to do it in the most unnerving conditions with the car; the car is not ready to go 230, but you have to handle it. It's been an experience, the month of May in an IndyCar."

Game of the Day: Heat at Pacers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (+2.5, 181)

The Indiana Pacers have been waiting a year for a second chance at the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals after falling in seven games last spring. The Pacers had a rocky road getting back but will finally get their shot at the Heat when they host Game 1 on Sunday. Miami cruised through the first two rounds in a total of nine games while Indiana needed seven games to sneak past No. 8 seed Atlanta in the first round before fumbling past Washington in six.

The Pacers declared before the season that their intention was to secure the best record in the East to ensure that another seventh game against the Heat would be on their home court and stumbled into just that when Miami took its foot off the gas in the final week of the regular season. “Everything is behind us,” Indiana coach Frank Vogel told reporters. “Like we said when we started the playoffs, (first-half record) 33-7 means nothing, How we struggled down the stretch and took a lot of criticism, that means nothing. That’s behind us and this is where we wanted to be.” Miami is gearing up for another physical battle and is not intimidated by starting on the road.

          TV:
          3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

          LINE HISTORY:
The Heat opened as 2-point favorites, but were quickly bet to +2.5 and the total opened at 181 and has remained steady.

          INJURY REPORT:
Pacers - Andrew Bynum (Out, knee)

          ABOUT THE HEAT:
Miami crushed Indiana 99-76 in Game 7 at home last season, putting an exclamation point on a back-and-forth series in which neither team managed consecutive wins. LeBron James averaged 29 points in that series and is coming off a semifinals against Brooklyn in which he averaged 30 points on 57 percent shooting. Chris Bosh hit a key 3-pointer in Game 4 against the Nets but is ready to get back to the physical challenge of the Pacers. “It’s back to a wrestling match now,” Bosh told ESPN.com. “For the latter half of the season, that’s how we’ve been playing. So for us, I think it will be a smooth transition.” Heat forward Udonis Haslem is expecting to get more time against a bigger Indiana front line and even center Greg Oden could be of use.

          ABOUT THE PACERS:
Indiana wanted the matchup with the Heat but hasn’t been very impressive on its homecourt in the postseason. The Pacers dropped two at home to the Hawks in the first round and two to the Wizards in the second, including an embarrassing 102-79 Game 5 loss when they had a chance to clinch the series. David West picked the team up in the clinching game against Washington with a postseason-high 29 points, including eight in the decisive run to end the game. “It’s only going to get tougher,” West told reporters. “We’ve been talking about this series all year. We’ve had a different path than (Miami) had, but we’re here.”

          TRENDS:

*Pacers are 17-37-1 ATS in their last 55 games overall
*Over is 7-1 in Heat last 8 games playing on 3 or more days rest
*Under is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings
*Heat are 2-5 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Indiana

          CONSENSUS:
69 percent bettors are on the Heat -2.5.

Betting trends for the NBA's conference finals
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It may not have gone exactly according to plan, but the top-two teams in the Eastern and Western Conferences will do battle for spots in the NBA Finals.

Here are three betting trends to keep an eye on as the Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder look to take the next step in their quest to hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy:

          Points A-Plenty

Over the previous four years, only one conference final series has trended to the Under; Boston and Orlando went 2-4 O/U in the 2010 Eastern Conference final thanks in large part to the Celtics' stifling defense. The other seven series in that span are a combined 26-14 O/U, including a 14-7 mark in the four Western Conference championship series. Three of the four remaining teams trended Over during the regular season; only the Pacers (35-44-3) favored the Under.

          Long Series? No Problem

The Miami Heat have found themselves having to go the distance in back-to-back conference finals, but that didn't affect their ability to perform in the Finals. The Heat rolled to Game 7 victories in their previous two East finals by an average of 18 points, then went on to win the championship both times. It helped that Miami wasn't tested in either of its first two rounds the past two seasons; it needed 11 games to reach the conference final in 2012 and just nine games last season.

          Fast Start = Slight Edge

Winning the first quarter is by no means a guarantee of a victory in the conference finals, but it certainly helps. Teams that outscore opponents in the opening 12 minutes are 25-19-2 in the conference championships, and have posted winning overall records in all four conference final series spanning the previous two years. Outliers punctuated the two seasons before that; teams seizing the lead after the first quarter went just 2-8 in 2011 after posting an absurd 9-2-1 mark in 2010.

Kings at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks (-148, 5)

After failing last postseason, the Los Angeles Kings get another chance to knock off the Blackhawks as the teams begin their Western Conference final series in Chicago on Sunday afternoon. The Kings won four straight to oust St. Louis and outlasted San Jose in a seven-game set that saw the home team capture each contest before falling to Chicago, which won the conference final in five games and defeated Boston to earn the fifth Stanley Cup championship in franchise history. Los Angeles dropped all three contests at Chicago in last year's matchup and its first two at San Jose in this postseason's first-round series to extend its road losing streak to eight before winning five of its last six - including three of four at Anaheim.

The Kings have proven they never can be counted out as they became the fourth team in NHL history to overcome a 3-0 series deficit against the Sharks, then were down 3-2 to Pacific Division-champion Anaheim before posting a 2-1 triumph to even the set and trouncing the Ducks 6-2 in the seventh game. Chicago needed six games to dispatch both St. Louis and Minnesota, losing the first two before reeling off four straight wins against the Blues and claiming all three home games before eliminating the Wild with a 2-1 overtime triumph in Minnesota. The Blackhawks are 2-0 all-time versus the Kings, having also defeated Los Angeles in five games in their 1974 first-round matchup.

            TV:
3 p.m. ET, NBC, TSN, RDS

            ABOUT THE KINGS:
Los Angeles was held to three goals or fewer in each of the first six games against Anaheim before erupting for six on Friday. Five different players recorded a goal and an assist apiece, including Anze Kopitar - who raised his league-leading point total to 19 and has registered at least one point in 13 of the Kings' 14 playoff contests. Marian Gaborik scored his league-best ninth goal and also set up a tally.

            ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS:
Marian Hossa and defenseman Brent Seabrook lead the club in scoring this postseason with 11 points apiece, but the most dangerous players on the roster remain captain Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. The dynamic duo has combined for seven of the team's game-winning goals, with Toews leading the NHL with four. Corey Crawford has been superb in net as he has posted a league-best 1.97 goals-against average.

            TRENDS:

            * Kings are 0-5 in the last five meetings in Chicago.
            * Blackhawks are 8-1 in their last nine Conference Finals games.
            * Under is 22-8-3 in the last 33 meetings in Chicago.
            * Kings are 1-4 in their last five Conference Finals games.

            OVERTIME:

            1. Los Angeles is 6-0 when facing elimination this postseason.

            2. The Blackhawks have won nine of their last 11 meetings with the Kings, including all three in the 2013-14 regular season.

            3. Los Angeles played nearly the entire second-round series against the Ducks without Ds Willie Mitchell and Robyn Regehr due to injuries. The latter saw just over 3 1/2 minutes of action in the opener before getting hurt.

Mark Trumbo, Arizona - Early July

Trumbo has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a stress fracture in his left foot. He is targeting a return for the beginning of July.

White Sox place Jose Abreu on DL

Chicago White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu, the major league leader in home runs, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with tendinitis in his left ankle. Ryan Hanigan injured, leaving Rays catching thin

The Rays are a bit thin behind the plate. C Ryan Hanigan left Friday's game and may be sidelined until at least Tuesday due to a sore and tender right hamstring that may be pulled. Hanigan is holding out hope it was just a cramp or a mild strain. Manager Joe Maddon said before Saturday's game that head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield was still deciding on a diagnosis.

Tigers will be careful with Sanchez in first start

Anibal Sanchez is set to start the series finale against the Red Sox on Sunday night, a nationally televised game on ESPN.

In his first start since April 26 — he went just 2.2 innings because of a blister on his right hand, which landed him on the disabled list — Sanchez will be looking to work his way back into starting form, but manager Brad Ausmus will be keeping an eye on Sanchez’ progress.

“We have to watch his pitch count, for sure,” Ausmus said. “We have to watch it and make sure it doesn’t get over a certain amount.”

Latos feels good after another bullpen session

Mat Latos threw 35 pitches, felt great and is scheduled to throw live batting practice this upcoming week in Washington, D.C., before a game with the Nationals.

He wore a smile on Saturday, but he's still making sure he's not too excited about his potential return.

Latos has been to this point before, throwing in a minor-league game during spring training and starting a game in Pensacola and scheduling another game in advance of what he hoped would be his 2014 debut. That's when the flexor mass in his right arm started bothering him.
