Preakness Stakes betting: Horse-by-horse preview and picks

If California Chrome could save time in a bottle, the first thing he'd probably do would be to fire the clockers at Churchill Downs. The Chromie's time was one of the slowest ever for a Kentucky Derby winner a couple of weeks ago.

But, despite the pedestrian time of 2:03.66 (slowest winning time on a fast track since 1974) we're still pretty high on California Chrome's chances to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed pulled off the hat trick in 1978. That's mainly because the rest of the three-year-old class is mediocre, save for the filly Untapable, who remains steadfast against running against the males.

Here's a look at the 10-horse field for the 139th running of the Preakness at Pimlico Saturday:

    1. Dynamic Impact (jockey-M. Mena, odds-12-1):
Broke his maiden in March and then came back to win the Illinois Derby posting a Beyer number of 102. He's quick and improving but seems easily outclassed here.

    2. General a Rod (J. Castellano, 15-1):
Endured a troubled-trip in the Kentucky Derby, the first time in his six career starts that he didn't hit the board. Jockey Joel Rosario opted to take the mount on Ride On Curlin, which shows you which horse he likes better.

    3. California Chrome (V. Espinoza, 3-5):
The California-bred carries a five-race winning streak into the second jewel of the Triple Crown and looms the clear choice. The key will be how Espinoza rates him as there is plenty of early speed in the race and CC likes to be near the front. Five Kentucky Derby winners have won the Preakness in the past dozen years.

    4. Ring Weekend (A. Garcia, 20-1):
Once a favorite in the Kentucky Derby futures pools, this colt figured to be one of the top contenders for the Run for the Roses after his win in the Tampa Bay Derby. That's when things went downhill as he was routed in the Calder Derby by nine lengths as the heavy chalk and then came down with a fever. Well-bred, but would be a surprise.

    5. Bayern (R. Naparavnik, 10-1):
Disappointed as the 8/5 favorite in the Arkansas Derby after setting an easy pace. In his next start, he won the Derby Trial, albeit against a soft field, but was disqualified for drifting out in the stretch. Trainer Bob Baffert is taking the blinkers off his colt again looking to get this one to run straight. Has good early speed.

    6. Ria Antonia (C. Borel, 30-1):
Here's one filly unafraid to run with the boys. Took sixth in the Kentucky Oaks but could hardly see the winner (Untapable) at the finish. Best run was a second at the Santa Anita Oaks and is a decided long shot with little hope of becoming the sixth filly to win the Preakness.

    7. Kid Cruz (J. Pimentel, 20-1):
Only runner in the field to have raced at Pimlico and it was a win in the Tesio Stakes in mid-April. Trainer Linda Rice, a favorite of horseplayers at Saratoga in the summer, is just the 15th female to saddle a Preakness entry. His highest speed figures, however, pales in comparison to the contenders.

    8. Social Inclusion (L. Contreras, 5-1):
The speed gurus rate this lightly-raced colt strongly but a bruised foot could hamper his chances. Still, he was third in the Wood setting the pace as the 8/5 favorite and was beaten only by well-meant Kentucky Derby runners Wicked Strong and Samraat. If he's healthy he should be fresh and he set the track record at Gulfstream for 1 1/16th miles in March. A true threat.

    9. Pablo Del Monte (J. Sanchez, 20-1):
Drew into the Kentucky Derby when Hoppertunity was scratched but trainer Wesley Ward decided against running him especially when he was going to have to start from Post 20. Took third in the Bluegrass Stakes and has good early speed but his speed figures are not impressive.

    10. Ride On Curlin (J. Rosario, 10-1):
Could be the wise guy's choice after a troubled second in the Arkansas Derby and even more problems in the Kentucky Derby where he finished a hard-charging seventh by just six lengths after an inexcusable rail ride by Calvin Borel. One of just three horses in the field to come back after running in the Derby and he has had valid excuses.

    Picks:
California Chrome, Social Inclusion, Ride on Curlin, General a Rod

Game of the Day: Tigers at Red Sox
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox (-125, 8.5)

The Detroit Tigers are trying to get some revenge for a loss in the American League Championship Series and are off to a good start. The Tigers will try to clinch the three-game series when they visit the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. Detroit, which suffered a 4-2 loss to the Red Sox in the ALCS, took Friday’s opener 1-0 as Max Scherzer outdueled Jon Lester in a game that was played through rain.

Boston has dropped three of its last four games to drop below .500 at 20-21 and is having some problems offensively from everyone other than David Ortiz. Boston managed three hits in Friday’s setback and Jackie Bradley Jr. (.200) and Will Middlebrooks (.197) are producing very little from the bottom of the order. Torii Hunter became a key figure in the ALCS when he tumbled into the Boston bullpen trying to catch Ortiz’s grand slam in Game 2. Hunter got some personal revenge on Friday as the only player in the contest with multiple hits, including the lone RBI.

                TV:
7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, NESN (Boston)

                LINE HISTORY:
The Red Sox opened as -115 favorites and have been bet to -125. The total opened at 8.5.

                INJURY REPORT:
Tigers - OF Andy Dicks (Out, back), SS Jose Iglesias (Out, leg) Red Sox - OF Shane Victorino (Questionable, knee)

                POWER RANKINGS:
                Detroit (-198), Boston (-162)

                PITCHING MATCHUP:
Tigers RHP Rick Porcello (6-1, 3.22 ERA) vs. RHP John Lackey (5-2, 3.57 ERA)

Porcello has won five straight starts and allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his last three turns. The 25-year-old has issued only six walks in 44 2/3 innings and is fully recovered from the tightness in his left side that forced him to leave a start at Baltimore on Monday after six innings. Porcello was removed from the rotation for the playoffs last October and got in one appearance in the ALCS against the Red Sox, surrendering an unearned run on two hits without recording an out.

Lackey is just as sharp as Porcello of late and has allowed two or fewer earned runs in four straight starts after holding the Texas Rangers to two runs over seven innings last weekend. The veteran struck out nine in that turn and owns 52 punchouts in 53 innings. Lackey made one start against the Tigers in the ALCS and yielded four hits and struck out eight in 6 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up the Game 3 win.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 4-0 in Lackey's last four starts vs. Tigers.
                * Over is 3-0-1 in Porcello's last four starts vs. Red Sox.
                * Red Sox are 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                * Tigers are 1-4 in Porcello's last five starts vs. Red Sox.

                CONSENSUS:
Fifty-three percent of wagers are on the Red Sox -125.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Saturday's MLB betting cheat sheet
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Bunches of Blankings

A whopping six teams were shut out on a night where pitching shone. Boston, Texas, Kansas City, the Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia and Arizona all finished with zeroes on the scoreboard; despite this, the Under enjoyed only a modest 6-7-1 edge on the evening.

                  No Help For Yu

Texas ace Yu Darvish was on the receiving end of yet another poor effort from the Rangers' lineup, which managed just three hits in a 2-0 loss to Drew Hutchison and the Toronto Blue Jays (+155). Texas has been shut out in each of Darvish's previous four losses, including his only two this season.

                  No Big Favorites

Expect plenty of tightly contested games Saturday, with several tight moneylines on the ledger; Toronto and Texas are both -104 while Minnesota is a narrow -108 favorite against Seattle and Houston is -115 versus the White Sox. The biggest fave of the day: the Dodgers, who are -160 at Arizona.

                  Pitching Notes

                  * Oakland Athletics left-hander Scott Kazmir has been one of the top money earners so far this season, entering the weekend ranked ninth in the majors at $504. Kazmir looks like good value Saturday as he leads the Athletics (-136, 7.5) against a Cleveland team that was thumped 11-1 in the series opener.

                  * Philadelphia Phillies lefty Cole Hamels is on a strong Over roll, going 5-1-1 O/U in his last seven starts dating back to last September; unfortunately, he's also 1-6 against the moneyline over that stretch. Hamels and the Phillies (-117, 7.5) entertain the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.

                  Batting Notes

                  * Toronto outfielder Melky Cabrera singled home both runs in Friday's narrow triumph over the Rangers. The Blue Jays are 8-4 against the moneyline and 7-4-1 O/U in games in which Cabrera records at least one RBI going into Saturday's rematch with Texas.

                  * Braves outfielder Jason Heyward is mired in a 6-for-37 slump and hasn't recorded a multi-hit game since May 2. Atlanta, which is 5-6 against the money line and 2-8-1 O/U in that span, visits the St. Louis Cardinals (-119, 7) in a Saturday matinee game.

                  Totals Streak

Oakland Athletics (7-2-1 O/U): The Athletics have been running roughshod over the rest of the league, reeling off victories in seven of their last eight games while averaging better than 6.5 runs per game over that stretch - including 11-run outbursts in two of their last three contests.

                  Prop of the Day

The Los Angeles Angels are +220 to prevail by three or more runs against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. All but one of Angels starter C.J. Wilson's outings this season have been decided by three runs or more; the Angels are 4-4 overall in Wilson's starts, including a 2-2 mark at home.

                  Injury Notes

                  * Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto has been diagnosed with a strained quad but has not been placed on the disabled list. Votto has just 10 hits over his previous 55 at-bats, a major reason why the Reds are 4-11-1 O/U during his prolonged slump.

                  * Minnesota Twins outfielder Josh Willingham (wrist) went 0-for-4 in a minor-league rehab assignment. Minnesota is +510 units without the services of Willingham, who is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list sometime next week.

                  Weather Watch

                  * Fans at Wrigley Field will be treated to wind blowing out to right field at 6 mph for Saturday afternoon's game between the Cubs and the visiting Milwaukee Brewers (-117). Teams combined to average nearly 11 runs per game in 10 contests under similar conditions last season.

                  Umpire Note of the Day

Over is 10-1 in umpire Ed Hickox's last 11 games behind home plate involving the New York Mets. Hickox will be calling the balls and strikes as New York visits Washington (-152, 7.5).

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three big betting trends for the NHL playoffs conference finals
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only four teams remain in the quest for the Stanley Cup championship - and bettors will want to pay attention to certain trends that have highlighted conference finals in recent years.

Here are three trends betters should be on the lookout for as the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks face off for a spot in the Stanley Cup final:

                    Under a (Slightly) Stronger Play

Despite oddsmakers making adjustments to account for the greater emphasis on defense, teams have still trended Under of late. While clubs are 18-19-4 O/U in conference finals over the past four years, three of the previous four series have favored the Under; only last year's Chicago-Los Angeles series (2-2-1 O/U) did not. Expect low totals this year, with three of the four finalists ranked in the bottom half in regular-season offense and all four in the top 12 in goals against.

                    Comebacks (Slightly) More Common

Teams that scored first in the regular season prevailed roughly 69.5 percent of the time. That number dips slightly when looking at the previous four conference finals, with teams that hit the scoresheet first winning 68.2 percent of those games. Recent comebacks have been more prevalent in the Western Conference; the teams scoring first are just 6-4 over the past two conference finals, compared to a 10-0 mark for Eastern Conference teams that score first.

                    Power Outages Expected

Don't expect to see many power-play goals in either conference championship series. Last year saw just three power-play goals scored in the nine conference final games; there were 11 the season before, but those came in 95 combined opportunities. Aside from the Vancouver-San Jose outlier series in 2010-11 - in which the teams combined for a mind-boggling 16 man-advantage goals in their five-game showdown - no other series since 2010 has had more than eight.

Away dogs have another big night against runline

It was another big night on the diamond for away underdogs as they cashed in big time for bettors who took them against the runline Friday night.

Away dogs ended up going 9-2 against the runline, a success rate of an incredible 82 percent.

This has been a trend that has continued all year with away dogs hitting at a mark of over 65 percent for the season.

Phils’ Pettibone ailing again, Gonzalez is healthy

The Phillies’ starting pitching depth has suffered a blow as right-hander Jonathan Pettibone has gone on the disabled list at Triple A with continued shoulder problems. Pettibone had an MRI and has been examined by team doctors. The pitcher is expected see orthopedist James Andrews as he decides whether to attempt to rehabilitate the injury or have surgery.

Joel Hanrahan shut down from latest bullpen session

Joel Hanrahan didn't exactly suffer a setback, but it appears the Tigers' newly signed reliever was asked to take a step back earlier this week. Hanrahan was recently shut down from his second bullpen session and has resumed a long toss program, Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Friday.

Qualls takes over as full-time closer for Astros

After going with a closer by committed for the first quarter of the season, Astros manager Bo Porter on Friday proclaimed veteran Chad Qualls would be handling the closing duties from now on. Qualls, 35, had been one of a handful of relievers who have been in the mix to close this season, including Josh Fields, Anthony Bass and Matt Albers.

Qualls, 35, had been one of a handful of relievers who have been in the mix to close this season, including Josh Fields, Anthony Bass and Matt Albers. Bass and Albers are on the disabled list and Fields recently returned from Triple-A after struggling to close games, so in a sense it was a decision made via attrition.

Qualls has extensive experience closing games. He converted 24 of 29 save chances in 2009 with Arizona and 12 of 16 with the D-backs in 2010. He’s two of three in save situations for the Astros this year.

Rays Ryan Hanigan possibly to DL with hamstring strain

The Tampa Bay Rays are currently exhibiting why some teams prefer to go with three catchers on their 25-man Major League roster.

Ryan Hanigan left between the top and bottom of the 8th inning of Friday’s game against the Angels with a right hamstring ‘issue’ as MLB.com’s Bill Chastain writes. The team is currently waiting to see how Hanigan feels over the next couple of days before making any decision about his status.

Mark Trumbo's foot shows 'significant healing'

Diamondbacks outfielder Mark Trumbo had an x-ray on his left foot Friday, and said the stress fracture that has sidelined him for nearly four weeks has shown "significant healing." "I'm extremely pleased with it, at least," Trumbo said. "At three weeks out sometimes it won't show anything, but this looked really, really good." Trumbo is eager to get back on the field, but will be cautious going forward.

Despite the progress with his injury, he'll still likely refrain from any activity for another week. He's been cleared to take the walking boot off when he was pain free, but will be careful with that as well.

                        Rangers-Canadiens matchup trending towards under

The Montreal Canadiens host the New York Rangers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals Saturday afternoon and thanks to two superb goaltenders the under has been a strong play in the matchup.

The under is 7-0-2 in the last nine meetings between the two teams and is 6-0-2 in the last eight meetings at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

The Rangers Henrik Lundquvist has had a slightly better postseason than the Habs Carey Price, posting 1.99 goals against average and a .939 save percentage compared to Price's 2.15 gga and .926 save percentage, but both net minders have been spectacular.

                        Saturday, May 17

Track should be mostly dry for Preakness

Despite rain in Baltimore late in the week, the track at the Preakness Stakes should be pretty dry by post time.

Between 1.5 to 2.0 inches of rain fell as of Friday morning. The forecast for Saturday is mostly clear with temperatures in the mid 60s with a zero percent chance of precipitation.

The official website of the Preakness is calling the tacking conditions 'fast'.

Edwards takes pole for Sprint All-Star Race

Carl Edwards is living proof the Roush Fenway Racing team is making inroads on the intermediate speedways after a sluggish start to the season on RFR's bread-and-butter tracks.

Edwards reeled off three lightning-quick laps, and his No. 99 Ford team contributed a flawless pit stop, as Edwards streaked to the pole position for Saturday night's Sprint All-Star Race, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series' million-dollar dash for cash.

Edwards' average speed for the three laps and the stop was 146.915 mph, significantly faster than anyone else in the 22-car field was able to manage.

With pit road speeds waived for Saturday evening's time trials, Edwards had planned a relatively conservative entry, but as he approached pit road, he decided to throw caution to the wind.

"I had a plan to get to pit road, and I then threw it completely out the window," said Edwards, who rocketed toward his pit stall but slowed the car in time to stop in the box. "I came onto pit road what I thought was entirely too fast. I thought I was going to run out in the grass.

"Fortunately, I got it all slowed down. The guys had a great pit stop. This is fun. I think I'm still shaking a little bit -- it's so intense."

Kyle Busch wasn't completely pleased with any aspect of his qualifying effort, even though the cumulative effect was a front-row starting spot for the driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

"I left a little bit out there everywhere," Busch said.

Busch wasn't fastest getting on or off pit road during the three-lap run. His crew had a little trouble with the left rear during the mandatory four-tire pit stop during the second lap.

The net effect was a total time of 111.118 seconds (145.791 mph), nearly a full second slower than the 110.268 seconds posted by Edwards.

Kevin Harvick qualified third, followed by the four Hendrick Motorsports cars of Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kasey Kahne.

Josh Wise, winner of the Sprint Fan Vote on Friday, qualified 19th.
