        • Preview: Fever (12-13) at Sparks (11-14)

          Date: July 28, 2014 10:30 PM EDT

With their two All-Stars struggling, the Indiana Fever relied on their bench in an impressive road victory.

However, they'll likely need Tamika Catchings and Briann January to bounce back from disappointing performances Monday night in order to end the club's six-game losing streak against the Los Angeles Sparks.

The Fever (12-13) continued their strong road play with a 75-68 win at San Antonio on Saturday, improving to 7-5 on the road with their fourth win in five games away from home. Coach Lin Dunn leaned heavily on her reserves, who supplied 22 of the club's 24 fourth-quarter points. Lynetta Kizer scored a team-high 16 off the bench.

"We got a lot of help from our bench," Dunn said. "We wanted to try to stay as fresh as we could against them since they were on a back-to-back and keep the tempo up, keep pushing the ball. I thought it paid off for us the last five minutes."

Catchings and January were a combined 0 for 14 from the floor with one point. The All-Star duo combines to average 26.3 points.

"Coach said that we're only going to go as far as the bench takes us, and that's something that we want to keep doing," Kizer said. "Just keep working hard and having faith in each other."

Indiana's defense has also been strong of late, holding its last three opponents to an average of 64.0 points.

The Sparks (11-14) are a league-worst 3-9 at home, and have lost five straight at Staples Center since a 65-57 win over Seattle on June 24.

Candace Parker scored a season-high 34 points in an 86-78 win at Indiana on July 15, but Los Angeles followed with three straight losses - all at home - prior to Saturday's 77-69 win at Seattle.

Nneka Ogwumike scored 16 of her 22 points in the second half, while Parker tallied 13 of her 19 after halftime. The win pushed the Sparks' advantage over the Storm for the Western Conference's final playoff spot to three games and trimmed their deficit behind third-place San Antonio to a half-game.

It was also general manager Penny Toler's first win as coach since taking over after Carol Ross was fired on July 20.

"Changes happen in seasons and in teams all the time," Ogwumike said. "I think we've done a really great job of maintaining our composure so we can keep going out there and doing what we do best."

Los Angeles shot 49.2 percent and committed only 10 turnovers after shooting 39.8 percent and averaging 13.7 turnovers during its three-game slide.

Catchings scored 25 points in the first meeting on 8-for-16 shooting while January sat out due to a knee injury.

The Fever haven't defeated the Sparks since a 98-63 victory on July 31, 2011.

          • WNBA Betting Recap - 7/21-7/27

            July 27, 2014

League Betting Notes (from Monday, July 14 through Sunday, July 20)

-- Favorites went 11-6 straight up
-- Favorites/underdogs went 8-8-1 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams posted a 9-8 SU record
-- Road teams posted a 10-6-1 ATS record
            -- The 'under' went 10-7

            Team Betting Notes

-- Minnesota (20-6) has turned up the intensity, as they try to keep Phoenix (21-3) within hailing distance. The Lynx won all three games in the past week, and went 2-1 ATS during the span. They've won seven games in a row, and they're 6-1 ATS during the span. Next up is a date with Phoenix Thursday night at home.

-- Speaking of the Mercury, they have torn off 15 straight victories, and they have covered 10 straight games. They'll try not to look ahead to Thursday's giant tilt against the Lynx, trying to take care of business first against Los Angeles (11-14) Tuesday night in the Valley of the Sun.

-- Washington (13-13) has suddenly caught fire, winning four straight games, and they're 3-0-1 ATS during the impressive stretch.

-- Tulsa (9-17) picked up a rare win by taking care of equally disappointing Chicago (10-15). The Shock have stumbled in the win column overall, but they are 3-0-1 ATS in the past four.

-- The Sky had their meager two-game winning streak snapped in Tulsa, and they are now just 5-14 SU over the past 19 games with a 6-13 ATS mark during the stretch. That's disappointing considering they started out 5-1 SU/ATS.

-- San Antonio (12-14) have struggled lately, particularly against the numbe. The Stars are just 1-5 SU and 0-6 ATS over the past six games. They'll take on the Sky Tuesday, so something's gotta give.

                • Preview: Sun (10-16) at Dream (15-9)

                  Date: July 29, 2014 12:00 PM EDT

The Atlanta Dream are still atop the Eastern Conference, but their margin for error continues to shrink with their recent skid.

They'll try to avoid their longest losing streak in six years Tuesday when they host the last-place Connecticut Sun.

Atlanta (15-9) is the conference's only team above .500, but has dropped four in a row after winning 12 of 14, letting second-place Washington close within three games.

The last three losses have coincided with the absence of head coach Michael Cooper, who has been on medical leave after being diagnosed with tongue cancer. He underwent successful surgery Thursday.

The Dream suffered a 77-67 road loss to the Mystics on Sunday with the offense again struggling. They were 28 of 75 (37.3 percent) from the floor while scoring fewer than 76 points for the third time in four games. Atlanta averages an East-best 81.9 points.

Angel McCoughtry - one of the league's top four scorers with 19.3 points per game - was 5 of 17 with 12 points and is shooting 32.8 percent over her last three.

"We just have to find our focus again and get back on track," acting head coach Karleen Thompson said. "I know (the players) are going through stuff right now, but that's not even an excuse."

Atlanta hasn't dropped five in a row since a 10-game skid from July 18-Sept. 8, 2008, but should be much more comfortable at home where the club is 10-3.

The Sun (10-16) are 3-10 on the road and have lost 10 of 12 overall following Sunday's 76-65 loss to Minnesota. Connecticut also turned in a woeful shooting performance, shooting 32.9 percent from the floor while going 4 for 19 from 3-point range. The starting backcourt of Katie Douglas and Alex Bentley was a combined 7 of 27.

"I was pleased tonight that we didn't lose our focus defensively," coach Anne Donovan said. "Too often in our past we have not knocked shots down and the game gets away from us. I liked what we did. We just didn't knock shots down."

These clubs split two earlier meetings with each team winning at home. Atlanta took an 83-71 victory on July 8 with McCoughtry scoring 22 points while Connecticut was 29 of 74 from the field (39.2 percent). Both teams committed 20 turnovers.

McCoughtry was 2 of 14 for a season-worst seven points in an 85-76 road loss on June 1.

                  • Preview: Mystics (13-13) at Liberty (10-14)

                    Date: July 29, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

The Washington Mystics are enjoying their longest winning streak in four years after beating the Eastern Conference leaders over the weekend.

With Ivory Latta leading the way, Washington tries to stay hot Tuesday night against the host New York Liberty.

The Mystics (13-13) have climbed toward the top of the standings on the strength of a four-game winning streak, averaging 81.8 points in those victories. Washington, which has won six of seven overall, pulled within three games of first-place Atlanta after defeating the Dream 77-67 on Sunday.

The Mystics, holding teams to a WNBA-low 41.3 percent shooting, limited Atlanta to 37.3 percent.

"We're doing things the right way," coach Mike Thibault said. "We're moving the basketball, we're playing good team defense. We took another good team and held them to under 40.0 percent."

Latta led the way with 21 points, six rebounds and six assists. The All-Star guard is averaging 21.3 points over the last three games, significantly higher than her season mark of 12.3 per contest.

Washington is at .500 for the first time since it was 5-5 on June 13, and its four-game run is the team's longest since closing 2010 with six straight victories.

"Everybody's feeding off each other. This is a collective unit that's finally coming together and buying into what we need to do," Latta said. "It's a great feeling right now, but we can't get complacent. It's going to be a dogfight every night in the Eastern Conference.

"We just have to maintain what we're doing and keep this confidence and keep this swagger."

The home team has taken both of this season's previous meetings, with New York winning 81-64 on June 8. Kara Lawson was the only Mystic to reach double figures, scoring 17 points off the bench as Washington shot 33.3 percent.

The Liberty (10-14) had won a season best-tying three in a row overall before falling 78-63 at Phoenix on Saturday. Tina Charles had 20 points, but Cappie Pondexter scored 12 while shooting 6 of 18.

New York shot 32.5 percent, going 1 of 12 from 3-point range.

"We played out of our game, it wasn't our normal game," coach Bill Laimbeer said. "We just, for whatever reason, quick shooting, taking shots we don't normally shoot, going one-on-one, not getting any offense."

Pondexter, who missed all five of her 3-point attempts, is 3 for her last 30 from beyond the arc. She did, however, score 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting in last month's win over the Mystics.

Latta, meanwhile, leads the league with 59 made 3s.

Though New York is 3-9 on the road, it's won four of its last five at Madison Square Garden.

The teams meet again next Tuesday in Washington.

                    • Sky-Stars Preview

The Chicago Sky are looking to cap a three-game trip with a winning record ahead of possibly the biggest game of their season.

The San Antonio Stars are no doubt just happy to be playing after two days of rest.

These teams are battling to reach the playoffs in their respective conferences as they meet for the first time Tuesday night.

Chicago (10-15) opened this trip with Friday's 79-75 win over Eastern Conference-leading Atlanta before falling 79-69 in Tulsa on Sunday.

The Sky are playing without star Elena Delle Donne due to Lyme disease and point guard Courtney Vandersloot because of a knee injury. Delle Donne has played only nine games, but could return for Thursday's home contest against New York.

That game figures to be critical since the Liberty lead the Sky by one-half game for the fourth and final East postseason berth.

San Antonio (12-14) is trying to hold onto one of the West's final two playoff berths, with the fifth-place Shock three games back.

The Stars seek to avoid a third straight defeat after a difficult weekend in which they fell 88-78 at Minnesota on Friday and 75-68 at home to Indiana the next night. They did not get back to San Antonio until Saturday afternoon to play the Fever that night.

"Well, we got to spend like 30 minutes at home, to get a shower in and stuff like that," forward Sophia Malcolm-Young said. "We knew our season was going to be like that. Everybody's going through it, so we can't really use it as an excuse."

San Antonio shot 37.7 percent, making 5 of 20 3-pointers. Becky Hammon, playing at home for the first time since announcing she will retire at the end of the season, scored a team-high 18 points.

"We had a hard time scoring, we had a very hard time scoring," coach Dan Hughes said. "The shots were short, it was tough."

The Stars remain without former Sky guard Jia Perkins, out since June 26 with a right hamstring injury. Perkins is averaging 12.7 points in 15 games.

Chicago figures to have an edge with its frontcourt featuring center Sylvia Fowles, whose streak of seven straight double-doubles ended Sunday when she fouled out with eight points and nine boards. Fowles averages 9.8 rebounds as she faces a Stars team that ranks last in the WNBA in rebound margin at minus-4.2.

These teams have split the two-game season series the last three seasons. San Antonio ended a three-game home slide against Chicago with an 81-69 win June 7, 2013.

                      • Preview: Storm (9-18) at Shock (9-17)

                        Date: July 29, 2014 8:00 PM EDT

It's not looking good for Seattle and Tulsa, who own the two worst records in the WNBA.

While the Storm haven't won in more than two weeks, the Shock picked up a much-needed victory over the weekend.

Seattle tries to snap a season-worst five-game losing streak when it visits Tulsa on Tuesday night.

The Storm (9-18) have made the playoffs in each of the last 10 seasons to set a WNBA record, but that run is likely to come to an end barring a quick turnaround. Just seven games remain for Seattle, which fell three behind Los Angeles for fourth place in the Western Conference with Saturday's 77-69 home defeat to the Sparks.

"There's a lot of things we can't control. We can't control the people we're trying to get ahead of, unless we play them. But we can control ourselves in regards to how we play and we just have to focus on that," coach Brian Agler told the team's official website. "It's not something we're going to talk a whole lot about. Our players have been around this enough. They look at the standings. They know."

Crystal Langhorne had 21 points and eight rebounds and Camille Little scored 16. Seattle shot 39.1 percent while the Sparks shot 49.2 percent.

"Losing really helped them and hurt us," guard Sue Bird said. "If we want to have a chance we need to take care of our own schedule and hope some teams (above us) lose as well."

The home team has taken both of this season's previous meetings, with Tulsa winning 85-79 on June 15. All-Star guard Skylar Diggins led the way with 26 points while Tanisha Wright scored a season-high 24 for Seattle.

The Shock (9-17) had dropped seven of eight overall before battling back to beat Chicago 79-69 on Sunday. After trailing for most of the game, Tulsa closed the third quarter on an 11-2 run and outscored the Sky 23-13 in the fourth.

The Shock shot just 38.1 percent but held a 26-8 edge in transition.

"We came out sluggish in the first half," guard Odyssey Sims said. "We seem to always start out slow and we have to find a way to come out aggressive and stay that way. Transition points were big for us."

Sims finished with 24 points, Diggins added 18 and Glory Johnson scored 14 of her 15 in the second half. Sims is averaging 25.7 over the last three games - 10.9 better than her season mark.

Little, leading the Storm with 13.4 points per game, has been held to a combined 11 in 66 minutes against Tulsa this year. Seattle is averaging a league-worst 70.6 points, 12.0 fewer than Tulsa.

If you bet the WNBA, you obviously have been profiting off the Phoenix Mercury. If you haven't, well, you've been missing out.

The Phoenix Mercury are the best bet in the league and potentially the summer sports world right now. They are 18-5-1 against the spread on the season and are 10-0 ATS in their last 10 basketball games.

Tuesday sees the Mercury face the Los Angeles Sparks (11-15 ATS) on their home floor in Phoenix - where they are 11-1 ATS. They are currently 11-point home faves.
