    • Preview: Dream (15-5) at Liberty (7-13)

      Date: July 16, 2014 11:00 AM EDT

The Atlanta Dream relied on their top scorer and impressive defense to overcome an abysmal offensive performance and stay hot.

Their defense figures to provide a tough challenge Wednesday for the New York Liberty, who continue to struggle to score.

The Dream (15-5) head to Madison Square Garden with a big lead atop the Eastern Conference as its only team above .500. They're limiting opponents to 74.0 points per game during a 12-2 stretch, and teams are shooting just 41.8 percent against them on the season.

Atlanta won its fourth straight Sunday, 81-79 in overtime versus Chicago despite shooting a season-low 35.4 percent and committing 19 turnovers.

Angel McCoughtry carried the scoring load, matching a season high with 33 points, while Sancho Lyttle had four steals and two blocks along with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Dream were coming off a much better offensive showing in a 93-74 win at Indiana on Saturday, when they hit 10 of 18 from 3-point range. Atlanta was 3 of 15 on Sunday.

"We played two teams who are big rivalries," said Lyttle, whose 2.3 steals per game trail only McCoughtry for the league lead. "But it is what it is. We come out to play, win or lose, and we have to play hard. We happened to go into overtime, which stepped it up."

The Liberty (7-13) had recently won four of five to pull back into playoff contention, but they've since suffered back-to-back 14-point defeats.

New York has been off since shooting just 38.3 percent in Friday's 68-54 home loss to Los Angeles, marking the club's lowest-scoring total since a 70-52 defeat in last season's finale at Washington.

Tina Charles led the team with 20 points on 10-for-17 shooting. Alex Montgomery was the next-leading scorer with 10.

"You're not going to beat any team in this league scoring 54 points," Charles said.

The Liberty could have used a healthy Cappie Pondexter, who was 0 for 5 in 18 minutes to go scoreless for the second time this season. Coach Bill Laimbeer said she was injured in last Wednesday's 80-66 loss at San Antonio, but Pondexter didn't divulge any details about the extent of the injury.

"We didn't have the firepower offensive wise. Cappie wasn't able to go," said Laimbeer, whose club ranks second-to-last in the WNBA with 73.0 points per game. "Our offensive execution was poor and it showed in the stat sheet."

These teams split two earlier meetings with the Dream winning 85-64 in Atlanta on June 20, then the Liberty won 85-78 at MSG two days later. McCoughtry averaged 25.5 points in those contests while Lyttle totaled nine steals.

Charles was limited to 18 total points on 8-for-25 shooting.

Former two-time league MVP Swin Cash scored four points in 13 minutes for New York against the Sparks after being acquired in a trade with the Dream last Wednesday. Cash is averaging just 1.5 points.

      • Preview: Shock (7-14) at Lynx (16-6)

        Date: July 16, 2014 1:00 PM EDT

Even without two of their top players, the Minnesota Lynx continue to succeed.

The Lynx can extend their home win streak to seven games with their second victory in a week against the Tulsa Shock, who hope to avoid matching a season high with their fifth straight defeat Wednesday.

Though All-Star Seimone Augustus (17.2 points per game) is set to miss her seventh straight game with knee pain and forward Rebekkah Brunson (knee) has yet to play this season, Minnesota (16-6) is one of three teams in the WNBA with a winning record and has won three in a row overall by an average of 11.3 points.

"When Seimone and Brunson get healthy and the other players have that game experience, we'll be quite the monster to play against," forward Janel McCarville told the Lynx's official website.

All-Star starter Maya Moore scored 16 of her 26 points in the third quarter and had 12 rebounds as Minnesota shot 47.7 percent to improve to 9-1 at home with a 77-60 victory over Seattle on Sunday. McCarville added 13 points and reserve Devereaux Peters had 10.

The league's leading scorer at 23.7 points per contest, Moore has averaged 27.0 to help Minnesota go 4-1 in July. That included a 33-point, 11-rebound performance during a 91-85 victory at Tulsa (7-14) on Thursday.

"She's one of those players like all the great ones are," Seattle coach Brian Agler said. "If they get a little bit of a rhythm going, they're tough to contend with."

Moore posted 38 points and 13 rebounds to help Minnesota pull out a 94-93 win at Tulsa on May 23, but coach Cheryl Reeve was not pleased with the Lynx allowing the Shock to shoot 45.3 percent in the two previous meetings this season.

"The first two games we played them, we were not happy where we were defensively," Reeve said. "They are a good offensive team."

Though the Shock rank among the WNBA's leaders at 82.0 points per game, they give up a league-high average of 83.9.

All-Star reserve Glory Johnson had 20 points and 11 rebounds and All-Star starter Skylar Diggins scored 16, but the Shock allowed Washington to shoot 48.6 percent during a 91-74 loss Saturday that concluded an 0-4 homestand.

"We just need to regroup and have a day to get our legs under us," said Tulsa coach Fred Williams, whose team has dropped four straight and seven of eight.

Second to Moore in scoring, Diggins (21.1 ppg) had at least 21 points in each of the two meetings with Minnesota this season.

Averaging 14.8 points and 9.3 rebounds, Johnson has totaled 28 and 21 boards against the Lynx in 2014.

              • Stars-Shock Preview

The San Antonio Stars and Tulsa Shock both find themselves limping into the All-Star break.

San Antonio is hoping that a matchup with the Shock's league-worst defense can help cure its struggling offense Thursday in Tulsa.

The Stars (11-11) had won three of four before suffering blowout defeats in their last two games. They fell 88-67 to Seattle on Friday for their worst home loss of the season, then posted their lowest scoring total of the year in Sunday's 90-61 defeat at league-leading Phoenix.

San Antonio, which faced a 20-point halftime deficit, fell to 1-4 when leading scorer Danielle Robinson fails to reach double figures. The club's lone All-Star had eight points and a season-worst one assist.

Kayla McBride was 1 for 11 from the field with four points. She was just two games removed from matching a season high with 30 points in a win over New York.

The Stars came in shooting a league-best 38.5 percent from 3-point range, but were 3 for 17 with McBride going 0 for 4. Shameka Christon was 1 for 5.

"Yeah, we have been shooting the ball really well basically all season, although in the last two games, that hasn't been the case," Robinson said. "I think it has just been a mental thing, something that we can get right back intact with."

San Antonio was a combined 17 of 36 from deep in two narrow home victories over Tulsa earlier this season, 80-76 on May 17 and 82-79 on May 28. McBride scored 30 in the second matchup and was 4 of 6 from beyond the arc.

The Shock (7-15) will be playing on a quick turnaround following Wednesday's 93-82 loss at Minnesota. They'll try to avoid losing a season-worst sixth straight.

First-time All-Star Skylar Diggins scored 19 against the Lynx but was outshined by Maya Moore's 32 points. Tulsa surrendered 91-plus points for the third consecutive contest and is allowing a league-high 84.3 per game.

"Maya's the Michael Jordan of this league," coach Fred Williams said. "When you have guards and players like her and (Lindsay) Whalen, they make a lot of great plays together. But we learned a lot from this game."

Diggins totaled 37 points and 16 assists in the two previous matchups with San Antonio.

Fellow All-Star Glory Johnson finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds Wednesday for her sixth double-double in seven games.

                • Preview: Sky (8-13) at Fever (10-12)

                  Date: July 17, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

The Indiana Fever continue to have trouble holding onto leads, though they've usually avoided that problem when hosting the Chicago Sky.

The Fever look to avoid a third straight defeat Thursday night by adding to their home dominance over the short-handed Sky, losers of five in a row.

Indiana (10-12) squandered a second-half advantage for the seventh time in 10 games Tuesday, blowing a 10-point lead early in the third quarter and falling 86-78 to visiting Los Angeles.

It was the eighth time this year that the Fever couldn't hold a double-digit lead, and they've lost six of those games.

"We keep talking about the focus. We keep talking about the turnovers. We keep talking about boxing out and playing good defense," said forward Tamika Catchings, who had a season-high 25 points. "It's a whole bunch of excuses. That's what it comes down to. You just have to buy in and just do it."

The Fever will try to bounce back with their 17th win in 19 home games against the Sky (8-13), who are playing without All-Star forward Elena Delle Donne (Lyme disease) and starting guard Courtney Vandersloot (knee). Thursday's contest opens a home-and-home series that's sandwiched around Saturday's All-Star game.

Indiana is hosting Chicago for the first time since a 79-57 rout Sept. 22 that completed a two-game sweep of the Eastern Conference semifinals and ended the Sky's first playoff appearance.

The teams have split their two matchups this season, with Catchings missing both because of an ailing back and the Sky's Sylvia Fowles sitting out while recovering from hip surgery. Catchings has averaged 20.8 points in her last four games after scoring six in her return July 5.

Fowles has averaged 19.5 points and 13.3 rebounds in her last four, but the Sky have lost each by single digits. She had 17 points and 14 boards at Atlanta on Sunday but missed a layup at the regulation buzzer in an 81-79 overtime defeat.

Reserve Allie Quigley scored a career-high 27 points but Chicago couldn't capitalize on its 11-point lead in the second quarter. The Sky, who committed 21 turnovers and were beaten 21-13 on the offensive glass, have lost five in a row for the first time since a nine-game skid in 2012.

"Stupid stuff gets you beat," coach Pokey Chatman said. "Until we stop aiding in our demise, the hole is going to get deeper."

Jessica Breland, likely Chicago's lone representative in Phoenix on Saturday, had four points on 2-of-12 shooting. The forward has totaled seven points in the last two games and averaged 8.1 in her last eight - 6.4 below the mark of her first 11 contests.

She had 16 points in the most recent matchup with Indiana, an 83-75 loss June 20, and scored 13 in a 74-71 victory May 16.

Indiana might get back Briann January, one of its two All-Stars along with Catchings, after she sat out Tuesday's game because of a bruised right knee.

These teams will complete their two-game set Tuesday.

                  • Preview: Sun (10-13) at Mercury (17-3)

                    Date: July 17, 2014 10:00 PM EDT

The Phoenix Mercury's lengthy win streak would be even longer if not for a fourth-quarter surge from the Connecticut Sun last month.

Before hosting the All-Star game this weekend, the Mercury will try to avenge that defeat and win a 12th consecutive game Thursday night.

Phoenix (17-3) hasn't lost since visiting Connecticut (10-13) on June 12, when Candice Dupree and Brittney Griner missed jumpers in the final five seconds as the Mercury fell 96-95. Katie Douglas scored all of the Sun's points in a tiebreaking 9-2 run that gave the Sun a seven-point lead with 2:57 to play.

Phoenix has since produced the longest win streak in franchise history at 11. Griner's second dunk of the season highlighted a 90-78 victory over visiting Washington on Tuesday.

After an 18-point lead was cut to eight early in the fourth quarter, the Mercury responded with a 10-2 run that included four of Griner's 16 points.

"We are playing really well as a unit," Dupree said. "Third and fourth quarter we let up a little bit defensively. But overall I thought we played pretty well."

Dupree had 19 points and Diana Taurasi provided 18 as Phoenix moved a team-record 14 games above .500. Those two players along with Griner are slated to represent the Mercury in Saturday's All-Star game in Phoenix.

Douglas and Sun rookie Chiney Ogwumike will also participate, but first they will try to lead their team to its second win streak of the season.

Connecticut's victory over Phoenix was part of a six-game run, but the Sun have since gone 2-7. They did, however, snap a three-game skid with an 86-63 rout in Seattle on Tuesday.

Alex Bentley scored 22 points, and Ogwumike shook off a slow start to post her ninth double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

"We don't try to depend on any one player. We try to make sure everyone is playing the basketball we need to," said Ogwumike, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft. "Alex was really hot in the beginning, and we loved that because she was able to give us confidence for our shooters and get our posts going and everything."

Douglas struggled again with her shooting, finishing with five points while making 2 of 8 attempts. She had eight points on 2-of-9 shooting in a 90-64 loss to Los Angeles on Sunday.

                    • Preview: Mystics (9-13) at Sparks (10-11)

                      Date: July 17, 2014 10:30 PM EDT

A big performance from Candace Parker wasn't enough for the Los Angeles Sparks to win their first matchup with the Washington Mystics.

With Parker coming off another dominant effort but her team facing a key injury concern, the Sparks look to continue their recent improvement and knock off the visiting Mystics on Thursday night.

Los Angeles (10-11) is returning home from a four-game trip, which it opened with a loss to Minnesota before winning three in a row for the first time this season.

The Sparks pulled within a half-game of San Antonio for third place in the Western Conference with Tuesday's 86-78 victory over Indiana. Los Angeles trailed by 10 at halftime but Parker - who will start in her third All-Star game Saturday - scored 17 of her season-high 34 points in the third quarter to help her club pull ahead.

The Sparks won despite All-Star Nneka Ogwumike's second-quarter departure due to an ankle injury. Her status is uncertain.

Kristi Toliver's 22 points helped Los Angeles overcome the Fever without Ogwumike.

"We've got into our groove," said Parker, whose 20.1 points per game ranks third in the league and is the second-highest average of her career. "... Hopefully, we're going to peak at the right time."

Parker's previous season high was 32 points in a 92-84 triple-overtime loss at Washington on June 1. She also grabbed 12 rebounds, though she was just 10 for 28 from the field as the Mystics' reserves outscored the Sparks' 63-10, led by Bria Hartley with a team-high 20 points. Washington won despite 31 turnovers.

The Mystics (9-13) have lost four of six, though coach Mike Thibault wasn't entirely upset with his team's performance in a 90-78 road loss to red-hot Phoenix on Tuesday.

Washington pulled within eight with 8:44 remaining but couldn't get any closer to the Mercury, who won their 11th straight.

"You are talking about a team that is amongst the most talented teams in the history of this league," Thibault said. "You have players who are among the elite. They blitzed us early, and we hung in the game. There are very few losses you feel good about as a coach but I feel like tonight we made some progress because we didn't back down from a great team."

Monique Currie scored a team-high 19 for Washington, the only Eastern Conference team without an All-Star. Five Mystics are averaging at least 8.9 points but none more than the 11.1 by Ivory Latta, who scored 13 versus Phoenix.

The Sparks are tied for the league's worst home record at 3-6, but have won five in a row against the Mystics in Los Angeles.

                        Shock slumping into All-Star break

The WNBA All-Star break is this weekend, and it can't come soon enough for the Tulsa Shock and their backers. The Shock are mired in a five game losing skid both straight up and against the spread.

The Shock were faves in three of the five losses and couldn't cover as 8.5-point dogs at the Minnesota Lynx Wednesday.

They'll try and enter the break on a positive note as 2-point home faves versus the San Antonio Stars Thursday.
