  • Stars-Lynx Preview

It's unclear if the Minnesota Lynx will get one of their top players back in time to face a team riding one of the longest road win streaks in franchise history.

If she returns, Seimone Augustus could help Minnesota extend its recent dominance of the San Antonio Stars, who haven't lost on the road since visiting the Target Center more than a month ago.

Augustus sat out a 74-69 home win over Seattle on Sunday because of bursitis in her left knee. The Lynx's second-leading scorer (17.2 points per game) had a season-low five on 2-of-10 shooting in an 81-71 road loss to the Storm on Friday.

The injury also caused her to miss a 92-79 loss in Phoenix on June 18. She was held out of Tuesday's practice, but coach Cheryl Reeve indicated the team was being cautious.

"We want to make sure when she comes back, she's fully healthy," Reeve said. "We don't want to do a couple days at a time then she's out again. We want to get her fully healthy. We're pretty certain with what's going on with her knee."

Janel McCarville helped make up for Augustus' absence Sunday with a season-high 22 points. Maya Moore was held to 14 -- nearly nine below her team-leading average -- and shot 4 for 12.

Moore, though, has played a major role in Minnesota (12-5) winning both meetings with the Stars (9-8) this season. She had 25 points on 12-of-19 shooting in an 87-79 victory in San Antonio on June 1, and her 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists led the Lynx to an 88-72 home win May 30.

The Stars haven't lost on the road since that defeat, with the current five-game win streak away from home being their longest since a franchise-record, seven-game run in 2012.

However, they've lost 10 in a row in Minnesota, including two in the 2011 playoffs, and six straight overall to the Lynx.

San Antonio is 2-0 on a season-high, four-game trip after beating Connecticut 74-71 on Tuesday behind Becky Hammon's season-high 18 points and Danielle Robinson's 17.

The Stars are allowing an average of 72.4 points during their road streak -- 6.1 fewer than their season mark -- and 68.3 in the past three wins.

"There is no secret," coach Dan Hughes said. "We have had a couple of good defensive games in a row and that helps you win on the road, but I don't know, if I had the secret, I would feel like I'm smart."

Hughes' club will try to match a season-high, three-game overall win streak from June 14-22.

              • Preview: Mystics (7-11) at Dream (11-5)

                Date: July 05, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

The Atlanta Dream will try to bounce back from a rare home loss when they face a Washington Mystics team that's still trying to find the right rhythm for coach Mike Thibault.

The Dream will seek to improve to 3-0 this season against the Mystics, who will look to avoid a third straight loss when they start a season-high road trip Saturday night.

Atlanta (11-5) is 7-2 at home and has suffered both losses to the same team, Indiana. The Dream went 0 for 13 from 3-point range in a 77-70 loss to the visiting Fever on Tuesday.

They trailed by one with less than a minute remaining when an Indiana charging foul was reversed on replay review. The Fever scored three points after officials ruled that Tiffany Hayes was in the restricted area.

Erika de Souza had 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting, but the rest of her teammates were 16 of 56 (28.6 percent) from the field.

"Our team is not built around 3-point shooting ... we're an inside team," coach Michael Cooper said. "Championships are won in the paint, and I thought we did that tonight. I just thought we came up short on the free throws (20 of 32).

"Toward the end, we executed defensively as well as offensively, and that got us within reach until the replay."

The Mystics (7-11) lost 80-77 to Indiana the next night and failed to build any momentum for their five-game trek.

They allowed the Fever to shoot 52.5 percent and outscore them 31-14 in the second quarter.

"I just think we need to put together four aggressive quarters. We're too inconsistent with our level of intensity and our level of aggressiveness," said forward Monique Currie, who had a team-best 18 points.

Washington missed 15 of 17 attempts from 3-point range but managed to get within two points with 15.9 seconds to go after trailing by 12 in the fourth.

"The easiest way to say it is my message is we're going to play a certain way, and I'm more stubborn than they are," Thibault said. "There's a tempo I want to play at, and they haven't grasped that.

"There's going to be some tugging right now to get that done."

Thibault's team was swept in a home-and-home series against the Eastern Conference leaders from June 15-18.

Atlanta had a 17-4 advantage on the offensive glass and a 18-0 edge on second-chance points in a 75-67 win in Washington. Angel McCoughtry scored 27 points and the Dream made 17 more free throws than the Mystics in an 83-73 home victory.

Washington had dropped four straight road games before winning their last one, 81-70 over San Antonio on June 24.

                • Preview: Sun (8-10) at Shock (7-10)

                  Date: July 05, 2014 8:00 PM EDT

With rookie Odyssey Sims at her best, the Tulsa Shock snapped a three-game skid Thursday by beating the struggling Connecticut Sun.

The Shock look to sweep their home-and-home series with the Sun on Saturday night and end their home losing streak at two games.

Sims scored a season-high 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting, and Skylar Diggins added 20 as Tulsa (7-10) pulled away for a 96-83 victory in Connecticut. The Shock couldn't hold on to an early 19-4 advantage but took command for good with an 12-3 run in the third quarter and led by 19 with four minutes left.

"She's been leading up to having a breakout night," Tulsa coach Fred Williams said of Sims, who is averaging 13.6 points. "I thought tonight she was able to turn the corner and get a rhythm in her shots. We ran some sets and we did certain things offensively for her and Skylar."

Alyssa Thomas, taken No. 4 overall and two spots behind Sims in this year's draft, also had a season high with 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting in Connecticut's fourth consecutive loss. The Sun (8-10) also got 21 points from veteran Katie Douglas, but no other player reached double figures.

Connecticut is mired in its longest skid since Aug. 16-31, when it tied a franchise record with seven consecutive defeats.

"We have to do a better job - the five starters - of coming in ready to play," said Douglas, who has 46 points in her last two games. "I don't feel like recently, we've set the tone. We've given teams confidence on our own home court. We've dug ourselves holes.

"Any time you dig yourself a hole in the WNBA, you're going to exert a lot of energy and effort to come back and we're not that good, to be honest, to be digging ourselves a hole against good teams right now."

The Sun's chances of ending their woes any time soon don't appear too promising. They're 1-6 on the road heading into the start of a three-game trip.

Connecticut could also have a difficult time holding on the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference as well. The Sun, currently one game ahead of fifth-place Washington, are beginning a stretch in which it plays nine of 11 away from home.

Tulsa, meanwhile, will attempt to move into one of the top four spots in the West during another four-game homestand. The Shock, one-half game behind fourth-place Los Angeles, swept their four games in Tulsa from June 6-15 and play nine of their next 12 at home.

The Shock won 64-58 in last season's only visit from the Sun.

                  • Preview: Sky (8-9) at Storm (7-12)

                    Date: July 05, 2014 10:00 PM EDT

The Seattle Storm already took advantage once this year when the Chicago Sky were missing leading scorer Elena Delle Donne.

Now the task figures to be even easier for the Western Conference's worst team.

The Sky will also travel to Seattle without the services of star point guard Courtney Vandersloot to play the Storm, who seek their first sweep of this series in six seasons Saturday night.

Seattle (7-12) won 80-76 at Chicago on June 10. Delle Donne missed the contest due to Lyme disease, and that's why she's currently out indefinitely.

The Storm realized they caught a major break.

"Defensively Delle Donne is a different kind of player so we would have had to give her a lot of attention," Seattle coach Brian Agler said.

The Sky (8-9) will play this rematch without Vandersloot, who grew up in the Seattle suburbs and starred in college across the state at Gonzaga. She will be sidelined at least six weeks due to a sprain in her left knee.

Vandersloot's spot in the starting lineup has been filled the last two games by rookie Jamierra Faulkner, who starred with a season-high 27 points on 9-of-11 shooting in Tuesday's 90-83 win at Los Angeles. One night later, Faulkner made 4 of 16 shots for 11 points in an 87-69 defeat at Phoenix.

It's been an up-and-down season for Sky guard Epiphanny Prince, who has totaled 26 points on 7-of-21 shooting in her last two games after she scored a season-high 30 in last Friday's 73-69 win at New York.

Prince scored 18 points in the first meeting with Seattle in her second game after she sat out the first seven to rest after returning to the United States from Russia.

Tanisha Wright and Sue Bird combined for 29 points and 11 assists in that contest as Seattle held off a late rally after building a 12-point halftime lead.

One factor in Chicago's favor this time is that center Sylvia Fowles will be available after she missed the first matchup with a hip injury. Fowles, however, may still be hampered by it since she is averaging career lows of 7.8 points and 5.5 rebounds in four games.

Seattle was missing top scorer Camille Little because of her grandfather's death in Thursday's 70-56 home loss to the Sparks. Her status for Saturday is unclear.

The Storm were held to their lowest point totals overall and at halftime, when they trailed 40-22.

"I wish we would have competed a little bit tougher against them," Agler said.

Wright and Bird combined for two points and five assists. Crystal Langhorne led Seattle with 19 points.

The Storm's last sweep of Chicago was in 2008. These teams have split their series each of the previous four years.

                    • Stars-Fever Preview

The Indiana Fever ended their recent slump with back-to-back road wins, including one over the Eastern Conference's top club.

Tamika Catchings' season debut could help them bring that success home, where they've struggled of late.

Indiana looks for its sixth win in seven meetings with the San Antonio Stars on Saturday.

The Fever (8-9) have been without the services of Catchings, a former league MVP, due to a sore back. Coming off a season in which she averaged 17.7 points, the five-time Defensive Player of the Year has been practicing since June 24.

"I'm BACKKKKK!!! Will be joining my indianafever teammates on the court this Saturday!" Catchings said on her Instagram account. "Let's get it!"

Indiana had dropped five of six, including three straight home losses, before winning 77-70 at East-leading Atlanta on Tuesday. They followed the next night with an 80-77 victory at Washington.

Rookie Natasha Howard finished one shy of her season high with 20 points while Erlana Larkins scored 16.

"I thought we really showed a lot of heart," coach Lin Dunn said. "We're on a back-to-back, flew in this morning, had a tough game last night in Atlanta. I thought we matched their energy, their quickness. They wanted to push the ball and so did we."

Dunn's team now tries to avoid losing four consecutive home games for the first time since dropping their first four last season.

The Fever have won five of their last six against the Stars and swept last year's two meetings by a combined 32 points. Catchings scored 19 in both games while Shavonte Zellous averaged 19.5 points on 55.6 percent shooting, though she has just 17 points over her last two games while going 6 of 21 from the field.

San Antonio (9-9) had won five straight away from home prior to Thursday's 91-84 loss at Minnesota. The Stars led 35-30 with four minutes remaining in the first half before succumbing to a 20-1 run.

"We hung, but we just couldn't quite get over the top," coach Dan Hughes said.

Six Stars scored in double figures, including Kayla McBride with 17. The rookie has scored 15 or more in three of five games after doing so as many times through her first 13.

San Antonio, the league's top 3-point shooting team at 38.2 percent, was 5 of 15 against Minnesota. Indiana held Washington to 2 for 17 from beyond the arc in Wednesday's victory.
