    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Mike Trout hit a 3-run walkoff homer in Anaheim as the Angels scored four in the 9th to stun Tampa Bay 6-5 late Thursday night.

-- Bronx 1, Mets 0-- Pitchers' duel between two rookies making MLB debuts.

-- Reds 5, Padres 0-- Johnny Cueto has a 1.25 ERA in his first eight starts.

-- Indiana won at Washington, wins series 4-2 and faces Miami next, with Pacers having the home court advantage.

-- Thunder 104, Clippers 98-- Bet you Adam Silver wishes he wouldn't hear the word "Clippers" again until the draft, but thats not going to happen, because....

-- Donald Sterling hired more lawyers (surprise!!!!) and is going to sue the league to stay in the league. This isn't going to end well.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here..........

    13) A high school pitcher in Washington threw 194 pitches in a game this week, going 14 innings in a game that wound up going 17. The kid who was catching pitched the 15th-17th innings, then pitched the entire second game (7 innings) of the doubleheader. I’m not sure which kid’s parents should smack the coach first.

    12) Now that the Marlins have signed Randy Wolf to pitch for them, does MLB alter its umpire assignments, if Jim Wolf (brother) is already assigned to work any Marlin games? Wolf is generally seen as a pitcher’s ump, which makes sense, seeing as how his brother is a pitcher.

    11) Cleveland Browns signed veterans Earl Bennett and Miles Austin, upgrading a thin receiving corps.

    10) One of the things the Angels look for in a hitter is guys who can extend an at-bat and make a pitcher work- they look for 8-pitch at bats as a measure to wear the other team’s pitchers out.

    9) Phillies are now 13-31 in their last 44 interleague games; luckily for them, they don’t have another one until August.

    8) Speaking of the Phillies, Ryne Sandberg came down with food poisoning after eating food from a concession stand at Citi Field this week; Mets’ 1B Lucas Duda also got sick after eating food from the same stand.

    7) When a college basketball team has a disappointing season, funny how they usually have several players transfer after the season. This is called “getting run off”, in effect getting fired by the coaching staff, so they can bring in new players to upgrade the roster, while staying within the scholarship limit, which is 13. This year, Indiana/UNLV both fall into that category.

    6) I’m wondering if MLB will ever announce which umpires are ones reviewing plays in New York; fans don’t necessarily need to know, but I’m guessing teams want to know. If an ump is away from the field for a while, hard to know if he is on vacation or in New York reviewing plays, which is actually a semi-vacation.

    5) Ironic that the Texas Rangers’ pitching staff is falling apart the first full season after Nolan Ryan left the organization. Ryan encouraged pitchers to work deeper into games, to be tougher mentally, but Texas pitchers are dropping like flies.

    4) Why is there no 5-on-5 play at the NBA Combine? Seems like a little of that would be helpful, but maybe that’s what the Portsmouth Invitational was for.

    3) Chicago Bears are first NFL team to sign all its 2014 draft picks; Carolina Panthers were only team not to draft any guys who worked out at the Senior Bowl.

    2) Steve Kerr worked lot of NBA games on TNT with Marv Albert, who is a New York City legend but was fired by Knicks owner James Dolan; wonder if that had any impact on Kerr’s decision not to work for Dolan and the Knicks?

    1) Since 2005, only five teams have won fewer playoff games than the Knicks. Five out of 29 other teams, but TV types keep referring to the Knickerbockers as a marquee franchise in the league. Why? They’ve won two titles, 41 and 44 years ago. That’s it. They’re owned by a guy a lot of people think is a worse owner than Donald Sterling. Think about that one for a minute.

Three reasons why you should bet the WNBA

The WNBA opens its 18th season to thunderous applause this Friday. Well, maybe not thunderous. And, maybe not applause. More like a slow sarcastic clap.

Most often, the league serves as a better punchline than entertainment but like all sports – popular or not – a little wager can quickly make you a die-hard fan. And as ridiculed as the WNBA is, it has quietly become the secret weapon of sharp bettors each summer.

Due to the lack of exposure and coverage, plenty of WNBA news, trends and tidbits fall on deaf ears, which means those with their head to the women’s hardwood have a distinct advantage over the public and even the sportsbooks.

We asked some of Covers Experts’ sharpest minds – those that actually admit to betting on the WNBA – why they love the “Dub” and what they look for when handicapping lady hoops.

      Study pays off

“The sportsbooks delegate their resources to the sports that generate the most betting. WNBA lines are generally softer than you will find in, say, college and NBA basketball,” says a handicapper for Doc’s Sports. “As a result, someone that invests the time and effort into their research can have a strong advantage betting on a sport that is off most people's radar. The bottom line is that the cold, hard cash won betting on the WNBA is worth the same as money won betting on any other sport.”

      Lack of depth

“I essentially handicap the games same as I would any other sport, but find that because the public and oddsmakers aren't as up on it, that you can often find very advantageous lines,” says Covers Expert Bryan Power. “One key difference between it and most men's leagues is that there is a real lack of depth as far as talent goes, so the top two and three teams end up being much better than the rest of the field.”

      Value on the dogs

“I generally look to go against the public and stick mostly to underdogs and totals -usually unders,” says Covers Expert Sean Murphy. “That's where I've found the most value, particularly in the summer when a lot of recreational bettors and action junkies come out of the woodwork and pound the favorites. The lines certainly aren't as sharp as we're accustomed to seeing in the other major sports, at least in my opinion.”

Here’s a look at the WNBA futures heading into Friday’s season opener:

      Minnesota Lynx +130
      Los Angeles Sparks +400
      Chicago Sky +500
      Phoenix Mercury +800
      Atlanta Dream +1,200
      Seattle Storm +1,600
      New York Liberty +1,800
      Washington Mystics +1,800
      Connecticut Sun +2,000
      San Antonio Silver Stars +2,200
      Indiana Fever +2,500
      Tulsa Shock +5,000

Game of the Day: Kings at Ducks
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Anaheim Ducks (-116, 5)

Southern California fans couldn't ask for a better way for the first-ever Stanley Cup playoff series between the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks to culminate. With a trip to the Western Conference final on the line, the Pacific Division-champion Ducks host the rival Kings in Game 7 of their second-round matchup on Friday. Fresh off its historic comeback against San Jose in the opening round, Los Angeles kept rolling by winning the first two games of this set on the road before dropping the next three contests.

Anaheim jumped into the driver's seat thanks in part to rookie sensation John Gibson, who posted a shutout in his postseason debut to even the series before improving to 5-0-0 (regular season included) during his brief time in the NHL with another strong effort in Game 5. Los Angeles drew from recent experience and staved off elimination Wednesday by recording a 2-1 triumph at home. Defenseman Jake Muzzin and Trevor Lewis scored while Jonathan Quick made 10 of his 21 saves in the third period, including several during a frenzied comeback attempt by the Ducks during the final minutes of the session.

        TV:
9 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS

        LINE HISTORY:
Pinnacle Sports opened the Ducks as -113 home faves with a total of 5.

        INJURY REPORT:
Kings - D Willie Mitchell (Questionable, hand), D Robyn Regehr (Questionable, upper body). Ducks - RW Tim Jackman (Questionable, hand), G Frederick Andersen (Questionable, lower body).

        ABOUT THE KINGS:
Los Angeles likely wouldn't be one victory away from the conference final without the tremendous play of Anze Kopitar. The 26-year-old Slovenian has registered at least one point in all but one of the Kings' 13 playoff games and leads the league in postseason scoring with 17 points. Kopitar made a nifty cross-slot backhand pass to set up Muzzin's goal on Wednesday and was very efficient in the faceoff circles, winning 15 of his 23 draws.

        ABOUT THE DUCKS:
Captain Ryan Getzlaf has been producing against the Kings, collecting a goal and six assists, but Anaheim needs more from Corey Perry. The former Hart Trophy winner has registered only a tally and two assists versus Los Angeles after recording two tallies and five assists against Dallas in the first round. Anaheim dropped from first overall to sixth in playoff power-play efficiency, failing on all five opportunities in Game 6 to fall to 25.5 percent (12-for-47).

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 7-2-3 in the last 12 meetings.
        * Kings are 7-3 in their last 10 vs. Pacific.
        * Road team is 7-2 in the last nine meetings.
        * Over is 4-1 in Ducks last five Friday games.

        CONSENSUS:
65 percent of Covers Consensus wagers are on the Ducks.

                    Friday, May 16

Giants scratch Hudson due to hip ailment

With Tim Hudson coming off a season short-circuited by a broken right ankle, the Giants are keeping a close eye on veteran pitcher this year.

That cautious approach will keep the right-hander in the dugout Friday, as he was scratched from his scheduled start against the Miami Marlins because of a strained right hip.

Hudson will be replaced by right-hander Yusmeiro Petit, who earlier this season filled in for right-hander Matt Cain (cut on right index finger) for two starts. Petit, 2-1 with a 4.85 ERA, will attempt to give the Giants their third win in a row overall after they topped the Marlins 6-4 in Thursday's series opener.

Hudson's injury is not considered serious. In fact, he was seen running in the outfield before Thursday's game, trying to convince Giants manager Bruce Bochy that he was healthy enough to make the start.

McGowan heads to Blue Jays' bullpen to preserve arm

                    The feel-good story is over.

Dustin McGowan, the oft-injured Blue Jays right-hander who miraculously won a starting job at the end of spring training, was pulled from Toronto's rotation after eight starts. He went 2-2 with a 5.08 ERA and will work as a reliever moving forward.

The 32-year-old, who has undergone Tommy John surgery and multiple shoulder operations, simply wasn't recovering between starts the way he needed to and was worried the problem wouldn't go away.

In fact, he was concerned it could lead to another injury. So he informed the club and, after a discussion with manager John Gibbons, it was determined that McGowan was best suited to work out of the bullpen -- something he did last season.

Mejia emerges as front-runner for Mets' closer job

The most dangerous job this side of drumming for Spinal Tap -- closing for the New York Mets -- is once again up for grabs.

The most recent pitcher to serve as the Mets' closer, Kyle Farnsworth, suffered the baseball version of spontaneously self-combusting Wednesday when he was outrighted immediately after the Mets fell to the New York Yankees at Citi Field. Farnsworth had three saves in four opportunities, though he allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk in those appearances.

Farnsworth joins right-handers Bobby Parnell and Jose Valverde in the Mets' pile of discarded closers. Parnell blew out his elbow on Opening Day and underwent Tommy John surgery on April 8. Valverde converted his first two save chances before opening the door for Farnsworth by giving up eight runs (five earned) over a three-appearance stretch from April 12-19.

Rangers' Perez latest to face elbow surgery

The epidemic that is sweeping Major League Baseball appears to have claimed another victim.

Texas Rangers left-hander Martin Perez was diagnosed Thursday with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow and expects to have Tommy John reconstruction surgery.

Perez and his agent plan to meet with the Rangers on Friday to discuss his options. If he decides to attempt to rehab the elbow, he would be out 10 to 12 weeks. Opting for surgery would mean a recovery period of 12 to 18 months.

Under bettors enjoy good day on diamond

Thursday was a good day for under bettors in the MLB. With 10 games taking place the under went 7-3 and only 6.5 runs averaged per game.

That keeps an overall under trend going recently on the diamond, with a 13-21-4 record between Tuesday and Thursday and have averaged 7.74 runs.

                    Angels' Hamilton returns to BP

Josh Hamilton took a step forward in his rehab Thursday.

The Los Angeles Angels left fielder took live batting practice for the first time since he sustained a torn ligament in his left thumb April 8.

Hamilton, who hurt his thumb on a head-first slide into first base in Seattle, likely will begin a rehab assignment in the next seven to 10 days. Barring any setbacks, he could return to the active roster by the end of May.

                      RS,

Have you seen this one? It's nothing of any real importance but it's kinda interesting:

Manziel text: 'Hurry up and draft me'

Cleveland quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains said a text he received from Johnny Manziel on the opening night of the NFL draft last Thursday helped get the ball rolling toward the Browns picking the former Texas A&M star quarterback.

During a radio interview on "SportsTalk with Bo Mattingly" on ESPN Arkansas 96.3, Loggains said that as Manziel slid down the draft board, he sent him a text that read: "I wish you guys would come get me. Hurry up and draft me because I want to wreck this league together."

Added Loggains: "When I got that text, I forwarded it to the owner (Jimmy Haslam) and to the head coach (Mike Pettine). I'm like, 'This guy wants to be here. He wants to be part of it.' As soon as that happened, Mr. Haslam said, 'Pull the trigger. We're trading up to go get this guy.'"

The Browns eventually traded up from No. 26 to No. 22, sending the Philadelphia Eagles a third-round pick as well to select the former Heisman Trophy winner.

Loggains said the Browns actually tried to move up to No. 11 with the Titans and No. 16 with the Cowboys in the draft.

"Mr. Haslam and Coach Pettine had called me down to the draft room a couple of times throughout the night, and we had almost made trades with Tennessee and Dallas and backed out,'' he said in the radio interview. " ... We were sitting there, and Coach Pettine keeps texting me, and we're going back and forth and we're going, 'Hey does Dallas take him here? No they won't. Does St. Louis take him at 13?' We knew we had to get in front of the Chiefs (at No. 23) because we knew they would draft him.''

Loggains also said in the interview that Haslam was very high on Manziel, who was the top quarterback on the team's draft board.

"It was Manziel and then everybody else," Loggains said.

You, too, kb! I sure am glad the guys got it done last night! Playing the Spurs is tough enough without having to start right after a game 7!
