    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Favorites to win the college football national title this fall........

4-1-- Florida State-- Hear they have a pretty good quarterback.

5-1-- Oregon-- Best team west of the Mississippi.

6-1-- Alabama-- Who will the quarterback be?

10-1-- Ohio State-- Buckeyes will dominate overrated conference.

12-1-- Auburn/Oklahoma-- Will teams figure out Malzahn's offense?

18-1-- UCLA-- Jim Mora Jr is quietly getting it done in Westwood.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

    13) Steve Kerr shuns Phil Jackson and the Knicks, signs with Golden State for five years, $25M, all of which ignited a spirited debate on Twitter Wednesday night about who is the worst owner in the NBA, James Dolan or Donald Sterling? Guess it depends on whether you think racism is worse than sexual harassment.

If NBA players think the Sterling family is going away quietly or quickly, they're sadly mistaken; these people are experts at playing the legal system- this is going to stretch out for several years.

    12) Stan Van Gundy breaks the bank and is now in charge of the Detroit Pistons, which is good for the NBA, great for the Pistons. Very solid coach, good guy.

    11) Diamondbacks’ pitcher Brandon McCarthy is a bright guy; he was tweeting this week how there are more Tommy John surgeries in part because there are so many less shoulder injuries; modern training tactics have moved the stress of pitching from the shoulder to the elbow, where an operation takes you out for a year, whereas a severe shoulder injury is often a career ender.

    10) First five innings of the Mets-Bronx game Tuesday was the worst stretch of major league baseball I’ve ever seen, it was painful to watch two pitchers who seemed afraid to throw the ball over the plate. Wheeler and Aceves, oy. Just awful. Wheeler threw 118 pitches, got 13 outs. A 7:00 game was still in the 4th inning at 8:50, in part because the right field fence is so close, it intimidates pitchers from challenging hitters.

    9) I seriously wonder if they screwed up when designing right field in the Bronx; instead of curving and gradually getting farther from home plate as the fence goes from the right field foul pole towards center, the fence seems to go straight across, creating a very short power alley in right center. It has to have a negative impact on their ability to recruit free agent pitchers.

    8) The Madoff victim fund has had claims from 119 different countries; I’m not sure I can even name 119 different countries.

    7) Ian Chiles averaged 15.8 ppg for IUPUI in the Summit League last year; he transfers to Tennessee and will be eligible to play this fall, good get for coach Donnie Tyndall, who has been aggressive in adding players since he got the job this month.

    6) They have Monday qualifiers to get into PGA Tour events each week; this week at the Byron Nelson, guy named Case Cochran scored an ace on 5th playoff hole to win the last spot in the field. Must be tough to lose a playoff to a guy who gets a freakin’ hole-in-one.

    5) Defensive shifts have really helped pitchers as they’ve become more popular; now it is up to hitters to bunt against the shifts to discourage their use. If you’re stubborn and just try to hit through/over them, they won’t go away. Major league hitters should all know how to bunt, at least a little.

    4) I need to narrow my focus on what I read on the Internet; there seems to be an exhausting amount of information, so have to narrow it down, read the best stuff, then move on to other things. You can spend your whole damn day just surfing the net now. Managing time is one of our most important jobs.

    3) Official scorer in Texas finally wised up and changed 7th-inning error Friday night from an error to a hit for David Ortiz. Ball was a pop up in short RF that fell between two fielders, neither of whom touched it. Because Yu Darvish had a no-hitter going, they called it an error, which was just plain wrong- now that’s been corrected.

    2) Surprisingly, Mets have scored in more first innings than any team in baseball. Tuesday’s Met-Bronx game was just second game this season where both teams scored 3+ runs in first inning- the other one was a White Sox-Indians tilt.

    1) Phils’ manager Ryne Sandberg is old school; he left Cole Hamels in Sunday to throw 133 pitches, in only his 4th start this season, then chided closer Papelbon for begging out of pitching Sunday, after he had thrown Friday/Saturday.

Phillies veterans have been playing day games after night games. Sandberg may have a quiet exterior, buthe seems to be prodding his team to be mentally tougher. We’ll see if it works.

Pagenaud posts fastest Indy practice lap

Simon Pagenaud is riding a hot streak at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Frenchman followed his victory in the first road race at the track on Saturday with the fastest lap in practice for the Indianapolis 500 on Wednesday at 226.122 mph.

Pagenaud was the first driver this week to top 226 mph on the 2 1/2-mile oval. His run came after track officials extended the session when rain wiped out the first five hours of the scheduled six-hour practice.

It was the first time in memory that the Speedway allowed practice to continue for all drivers past the scheduled

"It's always enjoyable to get close to 230. Hopefully, we can break that in qualifying," Pagenaud said.

American J.R. Hildebrand had the second-fastest run at at 225.854 mph. Scott Dixon, the 2008 Indianapolis 500 winner, was third at 225.494 mph.

There were 29 cars on the track for practice, but Kurt Busch, who is attempting a IndyCar-Sprint Cup double on May 25, was absent. Busch returned to Charlotte, N.C., to his NASCAR team headquarters because of the rain, but he is expected back at Indy for practice on Thursday and Friday.

English rookie Jack Hawksworth was the first driver to crash in practice, spinning on the third turn and slamming into the wall. He was not injured.

Three live long-shot bets for the 2014 Preakness Stakes

California Chrome is going to be an overwhelming Preakness favorite. If you don’t like betting for such small returns then you might want to look for long shots. Here are three Preakness live long shots worth a look:

        Kid Cruz (+1,500)

One of the most challenging factors about handicapping the Preakness is that it is quite rare for a horse to have seen the track before. Pimlico is a backwater in the racing world outside of the third Saturday in May, so prominent horses and trainers don’t typically race there - especially not before Triple Crown season.

This horse, then, has a nice advantage - not only has he raced at Pimlico, but he has won impressively. That result came in the Federico Tesio Stakes. That’s far from a top level prep for three year olds, but it did produce 2011 Belmont winner Ruler on Ice in 2011.

This horse is facing a massive jump up in class, but he’s talented and, beyond the certain comfort with the track, he has another advantage. He likes to run off the pace. Given both the amount of speed and the quality of that speed in this race, things could potentially really set up well for a horse off the pace if things blow up in front. I’d like this horse a lot better at 20/1 or better, but he’s intriguing.

        General A Rod (+2,000)

I liked this horse going into the Kentucky Derby, but he had a rough day and finished 11th. Despite that frustration, there are a few reasons to take a look at the horse again here.

For starters, he was not initially pointed to this race, but the decision was made at the end of the first week between the races to enter him. That means that he came out of the Derby particularly well and is looking good.

Second, and most significantly, be willing to toss the Derby result right out. He’s a horse that likes to be contesting the early pace in his races. For some reason, though, jockey Joel Rosario was very passive early in the Kentucky Derby, holding to the back of the field. Perhaps it was to avoid the pace duel that should have emerged but didn’t, but the decision really didn’t work for the horse. He looked uncomfortable, and though he was moving forward at the end he never really recovered.

It was a lost race, but not one that took a lot out of him. He has a new jockey here. With a better strategy and a better race he could be a factor here. This price is too high.

        Ria Antonia (+3,200)

Sometimes things makes so little sense that you almost start to believe that there could be some wisdom behind them.

This filly was a non-factor in the Kentucky Oaks the day before the Derby. In recent years, the great Rachel Alexandra and Rags To Riches have come out of that race to win Triple Crown races, but the only thing Ria Antonia has in common with those two is her gender.

This filly has her name engraved on the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies trophy, but she only finished second and was moved up because of a disqualification. She was disappointing next time out and her owner took her from trainer Jeremy Englehart and put her with Bob Baffert.

After the Oaks, Baffert reportedly thought the Preakness was a bad idea, but the owner was determined, so the horse moved again - this time to the stable of Tom Amoss. That soap opera can’t help the horse, and she seems to be about eight or ten lengths too slow to be a factor here.

Still, there is talent and the crazy determination of the owner could come from a place of faith and knowledge instead of idiocy. She’s very unlikely to be a factor, but she’s like a train wreck - I just can’t look away.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Thursday, May 15

Very seldom any basketball team gets outrebounded 62-23, but Pacers did in Game 5 and at home- they won both series games here, by 22-3 points. Wizards scored 102 points in both their series wins, 82-63-92 in three losses. Wall was 11-20 from floor last game, after being in scoring funk before that. Washington lost three of its four home playoff games. Pacers won four of five road playoff games. Three of last four series games stayed under.

Clippers blew 7-point lead in last minute Tuesday, took bitter loss with officiating and ball security both under par. LA is 4-2 at home so far in playoffs. Oklahoma City is 3-2 on road in playoffs; they covered five of last seven games overall. Three of last four series games stayed under; underdogs covered four of five in series, with last two decided by total of three points. Clipper bench was 11-31 last game; need more than that. Five of Clippers' six playoff home games went over total.

Over is 42-28 in playoffs this season, 11-9 in this round.
Favorites are 24-46 in playoffs this season, 8-12 in this round.

Game of the Day: Thunder at Clippers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Los Angeles Clippers (-4.5, 211.5)

Oklahoma City and Los Angeles have traded epic comeback victories and the end result is that the Thunder have a chance to sew up the Western Conference semifinals when they visit the Clippers on Thursday. Oklahoma City saw a 16-point fourth-quarter lead evaporate in Game 4 before falling and then rebounded from a 13-point deficit over the final four minutes to rally for a win on Tuesday. Russell Westbrook hit three late free throws to cap a 38-point effort that gave the Thunder a 3-2 lead.

Clippers coach Doc Rivers sharply criticized the officiating crew over a ruling in which Oklahoma City retained possession of the ball prior to the game-winning sequence but also was aware his team collapsed while allowing the final eight points of the 105-104 defeat. “They made a horrendous call,” Rivers told reporters. “But at the end of the day, we created the situation. We put them in the situation by the turnovers, the bad fouls, the non-fouls. We did a lot ourselves to not win the game.” Thunder star Kevin Durant suffered through a 6-of-22 shooting performance despite finishing with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

          TV:
          10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

          LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the Clippers as 4.5-point home faves for this matchup. The total opened 212, but has since dropped to 211.5.

          INJURY REPORT:
Clippers F Hedo Turkoglu (Questionable, back)

          ABOUT THE THUNDER:
Westbrook stepped up with his highest scoring game of the postseason with league MVP Durant struggling so mightily. He is averaging 29.6 points and 8.2 assists in the series and his decision-making on the type of shots he takes has been solid. Westbrook said Durant encouraged him to take control in Game 5 and coach Scott Brooks raved about his point guard’s performance. “He’s fierce, he’s fearless and he’s a winner,” Brooks told reporters. “There’s nothing else you can say other than those three things. That’s who he is. The guy competes for his team every single night.”

          ABOUT THE CLIPPERS:
Typically one of the league’s most reliable players, point guard Chris Paul was the goat of Game 5 after committing two late turnovers – one in which he didn’t get up a possible game-winning shot in the final seconds – and fouling Westbrook with 6.4 seconds left on a 3-point attempt. Paul referred to the conclusion as the “toughest thing I’ve been through basketball-wise” and took responsibility in the postgame session with reporters. “Everything that happened there at the end is on me,” Paul said. “The turnover with 17 seconds left, assuming they were going to foul, was probably the dumbest play I’ve ever made. To even put it in the official’s hand to call a foul on a 3 – it’s just bad basketball.”

          TRENDS:

          * Road team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
          * Thunder are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four road games.
          * Clippers are 0-4 ATS in their last four games following a ATS win.
          * Over is 7-1 in Clippers last eight home games.

Pacers at Wizards: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Washington Wizards (-4.5, 180)

The Washington Wizards emphatically announced that they had no intention of bowing out quietly in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Wizards will attempt to keep the series going and put together a second straight dominating performance when they host the Indiana Pacers in Game 6 on Thursday. Marcin Gortat struggled through Games 3 and 4 but put up postseason career highs of 31 points and 16 rebounds as Washington controlled the inside in Game 5.

Gortat (16) had more rebounds than the entire Pacers team (15) at the end of the third quarter in Game 5 and the Wizards ended up with a 62-23 advantage on the glass. Indiana center Roy Hibbert, who came alive in three straight wins after being non-existent in the first eight games of the postseason, battled foul trouble in Game 5 and was no match for an aggressive Gortat. “We didn’t show up to play, man,” Pacers forward David West told reporters. “I don’t know if we thought we were going to come in here and these guys were going to roll over but they’re a very good team.”

                    TV:
                    8 p.m. ET, ESPN

                    ABOUT THE PACERS:
Indiana certainly won’t be intimidated by the surroundings in Game 6 after taking Games 3 and 4 in Washington to gain control of the series. The Pacers suffered a big letdown on the interior in their return home and could not match the intensity of the Wizards in the elimination game. “We’ve got to play with the desperation they played with (on Tuesday),” Paul George told reporters. I knew they were going to bring it, we just didn’t mach what they brought.” Coach Frank Vogel was ready to quickly turn the page. “We’re still up 3-2,” Vogel said. “It’s one loss whether you lose by 20-something or you lose by one. It’s one loss. We got to go back and respond in Game 6.”

                    ABOUT THE WIZARDS:
Gortat’s 13-of-15 performance from the field came as a big surprise after he totaled six points in the previous two games. “I was glad I was able to help my team this time,” Gortat told reporters. “I told them I want to contribute. I was an offensive decoy in Games 3 and 4. Now it was my turn to perform.” The “Polish Hammer” got plenty of help from John Wall, who buried three 3-pointers and scored 17 of his 27 points in the third quarter as Washington took control. “The pressure’s still on us,” Wall said. “It’s one game and you’re out.”

                    TRENDS:

                    * Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
                    * Underdog is 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings.
                    * Pacers are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games.
                    * Over is 4-1 in Wizards last five home games.

                    BUZZER BEATERS:

                    1. The Pacers’ 23 rebounds were the fewest in a playoff game in franchise history.

                    2. Washington is 1-3 at home in the playoffs.

                    3. Indiana is 6-0 all-time in series in which it held a 3-1 lead.

Road teams dominate in Wednesday's games

Two games were postponed due to bad weather, but in 10 of the remaining 13 games, the away team was victorious Wednesday. That clip is good enough for a winning percentage just under 77 percent.

The away favorite had a productive day as well, going 5-1 in those six spots.

Thursday sees a relatively light schedule in baseball, with one away fave on the board. The Boston Red Sox are currently -127 faves at the Minnesota Twins Thursday afternoon.
