    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Really bad news for the Marlins; Jose Fernandez needs Tommy John surgery, is done for the year and probably part of next year.

    -- Dodgers 6, Marlins 5-- Miami pitchers walked 10, threw 89 balls, 114 strikes.

-- Heat 102, Nets 96-- There was some good news in Miami last night. Lebron James scored 49 points; he's pretty good.

-- Ben Howland/Oregon State broke off talks; looks like former NBA guard Damon Stoudamire is the Beavers' new #1 choice- he is from Portland.

-- Mark Buehrle beat the Angels, is first MLB pitcher with seven wins.

-- Tim Lincecum induced 26 misses on 54 Atlanta swings last nite, exceptional as the Giants beat the Braves 4-2.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) Kids who don’t get drafted by the NFL should be allowed to go back to college; what would it hurt? The way it is now, there are lot of sad stories, kids who get bad advice seeing their careers end. Have to listen to the right people.

    12) Joey Votto takes grief for not driving in enough runs; this season, he has come to bat with 70 men on base, and knocked in only six of them, including just 1 of 21 from second base. Not good for a #3 hitter, but Votto does have a .404 on-base percentage. Why not just bat him leadoff? Seems like he would be ideal at setting the table for hitters who are better at driving men in.

    11) My godson Tom loved the Bills trading for Sammy Watkins; I’m against giving up extra #1 picks, I consider them to be like gold, especially if a perennial losing team like Buffalo is trading them. We’ll see how it works out, but in a draft loaded with good WR’s, I think they paid too steep a price.

    10) 18 of the 53 guys on Rams’ roster last year weren’t drafted; football players come from all over, which is part of what makes the NFL Draft more interesting than the others.

    9) LSU had the most players taken in this year’s draft (9). I’m guessing our guy Les Miles will use that in his recruiting spiels for the next year or two.

    8) My favorite sportswriter is Joe Posnanski who is from Kansas City; think he works for Sports Illustrated now. He wrote a great thing this weekend about his dislike for intentional walks and how the Rangers walked David Ortiz intentionally in the first inning Sunday, after a sacrifice bunt he also hated. Posnanski is a smart writer who is fair and a pleasure to read.

    7) From this point on, any interviews regarding the Sterling family should be kept to Court TV or CNN-- its not a sports story anymore. Lawyers are going to rack up lot of billable hours as this distasteful saga plays out.

    6) Shake Shack is a big deal at Citi Field; they have one at Saratoga racetrack and now also at New York-New York casino in Las Vegas. I’ve had them; they’re good shakes and all, but smaller than most milkshakes and like everything else at overly-commercial Saratoga, ridiculously expensive ($5.75 the day I was there).

The milkshake I had at In ‘n Out Burger in Las Vegas remains the best milkshake I’ve ever had, ever. Half the price of Shake Shack and much bigger.

    5) Browns didn’t draft a WR, despite their best WR Josh Gordon being suspended, likely for the whole 2014 season. Gordon was the first WR ever to have consecutive 200-yard receiving games, and for the Browns, at that.

    4) Kentucky paid Tennessee-Martin $410,000 to play its season opener this coming season; originally it was $375,000, but Kentucky switched the date and kicked in an extra $35,000. To a school like UT-Martin, that’s a lot of money.

    3) It snowed in Denver over the weekend, enough to cover the ground, maybe an inch or two. Oy.

    2) Looking at baseball teams on first game of a road trip, we see that unders are 47-41 in those games, 25-18 for AL teams, 22-23 for NL teams. Just in case you care about stuff like that.

    1) I’m way tired of media types who make six-figure salaries whining about the NFL Draft being in May. While I agree with them that an April draft would better serve rookie players, who would then get an extra two weeks to prepare with their new team, writers whining about having to work an extra two weeks is nauseating. Anytime you want to switch jobs, give me a shout.

Capping the Preakness Stakes top betting favorites

As we get ready for the second leg of the Triple Crown, here is a look at the likely top three Preakness favorites:

      California Chrome (-150)

What do we really need to say about this horse? He was the dominating winner of the Kentucky Derby and the clear and likely very overwhelming favorite here. You can’t question that he’s by far the best horse in this field. The challenge, though, is to question whether there is any betting value in what will be a very low price.

The biggest reason for concern is the pace scenario. He likes to sit just off the early pace - pressing it without setting it. In the Derby, that early pace was ridiculously and surprisingly slow for a race of that caliber, so the favorite was able to relax and conserve his energy. By the time he made his move there was no stopping him.

In the Preakness, though, he will face a much more aggressive early pace. Social Inclusion, Bayern and Pablo Del Monte will all be pushing the pace and the top two have the ability to be very fast. If California Chrome can’t relax in the face of that attack there could be issues. He’s clearly the best horse, he’s probably going to win, but our inclination is to look for ways to beat him in my handicapping.

      Social Inclusion (+600)

This horse has only raced three times, but it was his second outing that has captured the imaginations of race fans. In an allowance field at Gulfstream with a solid, talented field he absolutely exploded around the final turn to win by 10 lengths.

He jumped up in class next time out to make his stakes debut in the Wood Memorial. He wound up third behind Derby entrants Wicked Strong and Samraat, but it was a tough race and one that this horse could easily move forward from.

If the horse had made the Kentucky Derby field, he would have been bet to win, so he’s an obvious factor in this one - clearly second best. I’m a little concerned about the early pace he could face, but he is training well and is rested, and should be ready for the test. Head-to-head the favorite is likely better, but this is the horse California Chrome should fear most.

      Bayern (+1,000)

The similarities between the stories of Bayern and Social Inclusion are striking. Both rose to national attention on the strength of a stunning allowance win second time out - a 15 length romp at Santa Anita in this case. Both came back to finish third in their stakes debut - the Arkansas Derby here. Both are fast and very talented, but immature and inexperienced, and haven’t put it all together yet when it matters.

Bayern has had another race, though. When it looked like the Derby wasn’t going to work for him, trainer Bob Baffert instead entered him in the Derby Trial at CHurchill Downs. He won that race by a nose, but was placed second after a lousy ride from jockey Rosie Napravnik that earned her a three day suspension.

This horse is a touch behind Social Inclusion and the odds reflect that, but he has been working exceptionally well and will have benefitted from the extra race. The distance and an early pace are concerns, but if the horse does go off at or near this price then you’d have to factor him prominently in your exotic bets.

Game of the Day: Clippers at Thunder
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5.5, 212.5)

The Los Angeles Clippers will be riding the momentum of an epic comeback while the host Oklahoma City Thunder will be looking to rebound from a colossal collapse when the teams square off in Tuesday’s Game 5. Oklahoma City jumped out to a 22-point lead in Game 4 and the Clippers overtook the Thunder with a frantic fourth-quarter push to knot the series at two games apiece. Darren Collison was the late-game hero as Los Angeles recorded the improbable 101-99 victory.

Oklahoma City standout Kevin Durant scored 40 points in Game 4 but was a nonfactor in the final minutes as the Clippers roared to the finish. “We’ve got to turn the page quickly,” Durant said afterward. “Can’t get too high off of wins and too low off of losses. Got to figure out what we did wrong and get better at it in Game 5.” Los Angeles trailed by 16 with nine minutes to play before the resounding comeback, displaying a trait that the franchise hasn’t always been associated with. “It shows our growth,” forward Matt Barnes said afterward. “I don’t know if we win a game like this last year, honestly. We just kept believing and kept talking to each other.”

        TV:
        9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

        LINE HISTORY:
The Thunder opened as 5.5-point favorites. The total opened at 212.5.

        INJURY REPORT:
Clippers F Hedo Turkoglu (Questionable, back).

        ABOUT THE CLIPPERS:
Collison and the term “playoff hero” found in the same sentence was an unexpected occurrence with there being a star point guard named Chris Paul on the team. But the backup who is with his fourth NBA team in five pro seasons excelled by scoring eight points in the final 2:58, including the go-ahead basket with 59.9 seconds to go. “You just got to love a guy like that who plays with so much heart and never gives up,” Paul said afterward in reference to Collison. The Clippers went to a small lineup in the final quarter to shake things up or otherwise Collison would have been on the bench in the final minutes.

        ABOUT THE THUNDER:
Oklahoma City’s disintegration was partly due to issues matching the smaller lineup but primarily due to defensive lapses that allowed Los Angeles to score 38 final-quarter points. The Thunder held the Clippers to 35.2 percent shooting over the first three quarters before Los Angeles was 14-of-22 over the final 12 minutes. “We’ve got to get back – gave up too many layups,” point guard Russell Westbrook bemoaned afterward. “They got too many easy baskets, especially when we had the lead.” Oklahoma City was also hurt by 16 turnovers, half of them by Durant.

        TRENDS:

        * Underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
        * Over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings in Oklahoma City.
        * Thunder are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.
        * Clippers are 2-7 ATS in their last nine Conference Semifinals games.

        CONSENSUS:
55 percent of wagers are on the Thunder -5.5.

Game of the Day: Rangers at Penguins
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-154, 5)

The New York Rangers look to complete the franchise's first successful rally from a 3-1 series deficit when they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins for a decisive Game 7 in their Eastern Conference second-round matchup on Tuesday. New York, which is 0-16 when trailing by a 3-1 margin in a series, staved off elimination for the second straight contest as Martin St. Louis and Carl Hagelin scored early in the first period to lead their team to a 3-1 victory in Game 6 on Sunday. "We knew if we played our best game, if we play the way we normally play, we're going to have a chance to come back and win the series," Rangers defenseman Marc Staal said. "We started that in Game 5, then in Game 6, and now we're in Game 7."

While Pittsburgh won the Metropolitan Division to earn home-ice advantage in this series, it is just 2-6 all-time in Game 7s in front of its fans. "All Game 7s are big, but we can't change what's gotten us to this point," captain Sidney Crosby said. "All we can do is make sure we show up (on Tuesday)." The Hart Trophy finalist, who has scored just one goal this postseason, showed his frustration by jabbing his stick below the belt of New York's Dominic Moore late in the second period on Sunday.

          ABOUT THE RANGERS:
Henrik Lundqvist has taken aim at the Penguins, and not just with his water bottle. The Swedish Olympian, who was fined $5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct for spraying Crosby, stopped 67-of-69 shots over the last two contests to set up the pivotal Game 7 showdown. Lundqvist, who owns a 4-1 career mark in Game 7s while yielding just five goals, made 26 saves in New York's 2-1 triumph over Philadelphia the final contest of the first-round series on April 30.

          ABOUT THE PENGUINS:
A punchless power play continues to plague Pittsburgh, which failed on its last 12 opportunities and fell to 1-for-19 in the series. Coach Dan Bylsma has taken to putting four forwards on the ice when his team enjoys the man advantage - with Matt Niskanen serving as the lone defenseman. "We didn't enter the zone quite as clean (and) they started pressuring a little bit more." Niskanen said of the team's last three power-play chances in Game 6. "The bottom line is, it comes down to results."

          TRENDS:

          * Over is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings in Pittsburgh.
          * Rangers are 2-5 in their last seven games following a win.
          * Under is 9-2-1 in Rangers last 12 vs. a team with a winning record.
          * Road team is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.

          OVERTIME:

          1. New York won a franchise-best 25 contests on the road in the regular season and captured two of three in Pittsburgh during this series.

          2. The Penguins are 1-7 on home ice with an opportunity to finish a series since Bylsma became the team's coach in February 2009.

          3. The team that has scored first has won every game in the series.

Dogs on a hot streak in NBA playoffs

If you have been betting underdogs in the NBA playoffs the last four days chances are you're smiling.

Despite just going 1-1 against the spread Monday night, underdogs are 7-1 ATS the last four nights.

Tuesday night the Washington Wizards are 5-point dogs in Game 5 versus the Indiana Pacers and the Los Angeles Clippers are 5.5-point dogs in their Game 5 versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Wizards topping low totals all-season long

The Washington Wizards have scoffed at low totals during the regular season and the playoffs have been no different.

The Wizards have seen a total close at 181 or less five times this season, all against either the Chicago Bulls or Indiana Pacers. In those five contests the Wizards' have averaged 98.8 points per game and have topped triple-digits in three. For bettors, that means that the Wizards have gone over in every game this season when the total closed 181 or less.

The line for the Wiz and Pacers currently sit at 180.5.

Heat open as big home faves in Game 5

The Miami Heat can finish off their Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Brooklyn Nets on their home floor Wednesday, and sportsbooks have opened them as pretty decent sized favorite.

Both BetVictor and Pinnacle posted odds shortly after Miami's Game 4 victory and have the Heat as 7-point home faves.

Miami's 102-96 win in Game 4 pushed their record in the series to 3-1 against the spread.

Blackhawks' Shaw out for Game 6

Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw will not play against the Minnesota Wild in Game 6 of their Western Conference second-round series Tuesday due to a lower-body injury, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said on Monday.

Shaw will miss his fifth consecutive game due to the injury. Quenneville said Shaw is considered day-to-day and is expected to begin skating again in the next few days.

Ducks take 3-2 series lead, -300 series price

The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Los Angeles Kings by a score of 4-3 Monday night, taking a 3-2 series lead back to Staples Center for Wednesday's Game 6. Series prices have been adjusted and the Ducks are now -300 faves to eliminate the Kings in this Western Conference semifinal.

The Kings are currently +250 dogs to win the series and have already proven they can battle back from a deficit after spotting the San Jose Sharks a three-game lead in their opening round matchup, before winning the next four games.

                    Yankees' Carlos Beltran, doubtful Tuesday

Beltran was removed from Monday's game due to a hyperextenended right elbow and is unlikely to return for Tuesday's against the Mets.

Chance of thunderstorms at some MLB stadiums Tuesday

There is a chance of thunderstorms at several stadiums across the Major Leagues Tuesday.

In Baltimore, where the Orioles host the Tigers, there is a chance of thunderstorms and a 52 percent chance of rain at game time.

In Philadelphia, where the Phillies host the Angels, thunderstorms are expected and there is a 30 percent chance of rain.

In Cincinnati, where the Reds host the Padres, there is a chance of thunderstorms and a 46 percent chance of rain.

In St. Louis, where the Cards host the Cubs, there is a 52 percent chance of rain.

Over cashes at 70 percent Monday

The Over had a big night in MLB parks across the country Monday, posting a 7-3 Over/Under record on the day.

Six of the 10 games on the scheduled reached double-digit runs scored on the day, with the Chicago Cubs' 17-5 thumping of the St. Louis Cardinals leading the way.

The Detroit Tigers-Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves-San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers-Houston Astros were the three games that stayed under their respective totals.

Fernandez expected to require Tommy John surgery

The news just keeps getting worse. According to Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins anticipate that Fernandez will need season-ending surgery on his right elbow. Presumably we’re talking about Tommy John surgery here. If there’s any silver lining, it’s that the injury involves Fernandez’s elbow, not his shoulder.

Rangers put off DL decision on LHP Perez

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington is holding off on making a decision regarding the status of left-hander Martin Perez, who is suffering from elbow inflammation.

Perez departed his Saturday start after logging just 3 2/2 innings against the Boston Red Sox.

After stringing together three consecutive scoreless outings in mid-April, Perez has allowed 19 earned runs over his past three starts and 13 1/3 innings. An MRI exam did not reveal any structural damage in his elbow.

Mets defeat Yankees for fifth straight time

The New York Mets extended their longest winning streak over the New York Yankees in the 18-year history of the Subway Series, with a 9-7 decision Monday before 46,517 at Yankee Stadium.

The Mets (18-19) have claimed five straight over their inner-city rivals. They swept the series in 2013, 4-0.

The win was the second game in a row the Mets staged a late-inning comeback. They scored two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth, erasing a 7-4 Yankees lead.

The Mets scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth against the Phillies on Sunday in a game they eventually won in 11 innings, 5-4.

The Yankees have dropped three straight and eight of their last 12 games.

The crushing blow against the Yankees (19-18) came courtesy of center fielder Chris Young's two-run line-drive homer to left in the eighth, one of four for the Mets, snapping a 7-7 tie.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Rockies punishing low totals
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Cubs Cruise as Road Dog

The Chicago Cubs (+150) walloped the host St. Louis Cardinals 17-5 Monday for their biggest win of the season. Chicago improved to 5-7 as a road underdog against a divisional opponent; the Cubs (+222) resume their series in St. Louis on Tuesday.

                        Pomeranz a Heavy Favorite

Oddsmakers were rewarded for their faith in Oakland left-hander Drew Pomeranz last time out, as he tossed five shutout innings as a -157 favorite in his first start of the season en route to a 2-0 Athletics victory. Pomeranz is installed at a whopping -191 for Tuesday's duel with the visiting Chicago White Sox.

                        Rocky Mountain High

The Colorado Rockies have given Over bettors plenty of love on low totals, going 6-1-2 O/U in their last nine games with the number set at 8.5 or lower. Colorado (+140, 7.5) opens a three-game interleague series in Kansas City on Tuesday.

                        Pitching Notes

                        * Tampa Bay Rays lefty David Price is an underdog Tuesday for the first time all season, entering at -102 against Hisashi Iwakuma and the Seattle Mariners. Price is 5-1 in his last six starts as a dog, posting a sensational 1.38 ERA in those outings.

                        * Washington ace Stephen Strasburg has been a scoring magnet at night this season, going 4-0 O/U in four evening starts. Strasburg, who boasts a 3.31 ERA in night games compared to 2.60 in day outings, will be under the lights Tuesday when his Nationals (-129, 8) visit the Arizona Diamondbacks.

                        Batting Notes

                        * Yankees catcher Brian McCann is batting just .213 for the season; New York is just 3-9 against the moneyline in games in which McCann doesn't record a hit. McCann will look to bounce back Tuesday as the Yankees (-135, 8.5) host the cross-town rival Mets.

                        * San Francisco outfielder Angel Pagan went 3-for-4 in Monday's 4-2 win over Atlanta, helping the Giants improve to 21-7 in games in which he records at least one hit. Pagan and the Giants (-103, 7) welcome the Atlanta Braves to town Tuesday.

                        Totals Streak

Detroit Tigers (1-5 O/U): So much for having one of the most dangerous lineups in the majors. The Tigers have struggled at the plate during their Under streak, scoring more than four runs just once over that stretch.

                        Prop of the Day

The Baltimore Orioles have returned to their 2012 form when it comes to pulling out close games, having gone 9-3 in one-run affairs so far this season. The Orioles are a +375 longshot to win by exactly one run Tuesday against visiting Detroit.

                        Injury Notes

                        * Miami Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez may miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his pitching elbow. The 21-year-old finished sixth in money won as a rookie in 2013 ($1,175) and is 12-0 with a 1.09 ERA in 20 career home starts.

                        * Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Colby Rasmus could be headed to the disabled list with a right hamstring injury. Toronto - which is 8-1 O/U in games in which Rasmus homers and 16-13-1 when he doesn't - opens a series Tuesday with the visiting Cleveland Indians (+106, 9).

                        Weather Watch

                        * Wind at Target Field is expected to blow out to right field at 8 mph. Minnesota, which hosts Boston (-106, 8.5), went 6-8 against the moneyline and 4-10 O/U in 14 games last season with the wind blowing in that direction.

                        * Citizens Bank Park will see wind blowing from right to left field at 10 mph for Tuesday's game between Philadelphia (-148, 7.5) and the visiting Angels. Teams combined to average 2.33 home runs in 12 games under similar conditions in 2013, slightly better than the stadium average.

                        Umpire of the Day

Under is 7-1-2 in umpire Bob Davidson's last 10 games behind home plate. Davidson will call the balls and strikes for the game between the Tigers (-105, 8.5) and Orioles.

Detroit Tigers streaking away from home

The Detroit Tigers continue their series with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards and have been dominant on the road.

The Tigers are 6-0 in their last six games away from Comerica Park and at 9-4, own one of the best road records in the bigs.

Still, the Tigers are +101 road dogs at Baltimore Tuesday. Drew Smyly will take the mound for the Tigers and Ubaldo Jimenez is scheduled to get the start for the O's.

Braves-Giants matchup trending towards the under

The Atlanta Braves visit the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night and it is a matchup that is trending towards the under.

The Braves are 1-8-1 over/under in their last 10 games, while the under is 5-0 in Ryan Vogelsong's last five starts for the Giants. The under is also 5-0 in the last five meetings between the two teams.

Home team still scorching in Blackhawks-Wild meetings

The home team has been dominant in the series between the Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild, posting a record of 5-0 thus far in their Western Conference semifinal matchup.

But the hot trend extends beyond the playoffs. Including these five playoff games, the home team is an incredible 8-0 in the past eight meetings and 16-5 in the past 21 meetings between the two teams.

The Wild will be playing with an extra sense of desperation being down 3-2 and on the brink of elimination. They are currently +106 home dogs for Game 6.
