    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Both road teams won second round NBA games, with unheralded Washington looking like a dangerous team in the east.

-- Penguins blanked the Rangers for the second night in row; cruel schedule for New York, playing five games in seven nights.

-- Bronx bullpen imploded in Anaheim; they walked six Angels in 8th inning, with Halos scoring three runs without a hit in a 4-1 Anaheim win.

-- Royals blew a 3-0 6th inning lead, 4-3 9th inning lead, 5-4 12th inning lead in a hideous 6-5 loss at San Diego- they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

-- Pirates botched a bunt play in 13th inning and lost 11-10 at home to the Giants, who are now 21-11. Pirates are 12-20, just 8-10 at home.

-- If you look at first five innings of the 13 games Monday, both teams scored in first five innings in only three of those 13 games. Under was 9-4 overall Monday.

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Wednesday's List of 13: My mid-week musings........

    13) It’s a pleasure to listen to Dick Enberg/Vin Scully on the Extra Innings package, Hubie Brown on NBA games, Brent Musburger on college games; these guys are all in their 70’s or 80’s, but they’re still excellent at what they do and bring great knowledge/enthusiasm to the airwaves.

I can only hope that if I live as long as they have, that I’ll be sharp and maintain my enthusiasm the way these giants of broadcasting have.

    12) Chiefs’ 23rd pick in first round Thursday night is their only pick in the top 85 of the draft; now that’s pressure, to pick one guy to fill a need.

    11) I read about a kid like Indiana WR Cody Latimer rising up in mock drafts at this late date and I get skeptical; the Hoosiers are horrible, though they do have a good offense (Kevin Wilson, their coach, was Sam Bradford’s OC at Oklahoma), but if you go until May 6 and then all of a sudden, this name starts popping up out of nowhere, well, where has that name been since February?

Haven’t been any games played since then; why the sudden surge in interest? Lot of good WRs this year; you want to take one early from Indiana? Best WR Indiana produced recently was Antwaan Randle-El, who started out as a QB.

    10) Speaking of Indiana, is Pacers’ center Roy Hibbert hurt? He’s only averaging 3.8 ppg in his last twelve games and hasn’t scored in three of his last four games. Are there off-court issues? He’s been a good player; odd for him to just stop being productive at this late date.

    9) They were able to get by the Hawks, but the Pacers don’t look like they enjoy being on the court together- they’re 4-4 in the playoffs and look like a staggering fighter who will get KO’d with one more good punch.

    8) 63 SEC players were taken in LY’s NFL Draft, which is a lot- that’s 4.5 per team, in a 7-round draft.

    7) Oregon governor John Kitzhaber used to be a ER doctor; his medical expertise helped save a woman this week when he performed CPR on her on a sidewalk. Must be gratifying to have saved someone’s life.

    6) Padraig Harrington has fallen out of the top 200 in the World Golf Rankings for the first time since 1996.

    5) AAA game between Las Vegas-Tacoma was suspended by rain late Sunday night, resumed Monday; the Tacoma starting pitcher, who had been taken out before the rain delays, was cut by the team Monday morning, which means he actually got cut during the game- that doesn’t happen much.

    4) I’m a glutton for punishment reading these mock drafts, but one I saw had three Texas A&M players getting taken in the top 7 of the draft, which would keep Aggie coach Kevin Sumlin on the horn with recruits for next couple weeks, at least.

    3) This will feel strange, when the Big 14 tournament comes to Washington DC in 2017, part of the package to lure Maryland to that league, no doubt—the ACC wouldn’t come to the Beltway very often. Just will look out of place when Michigan plays Ohio State in a conference tournament…..in Washington.

    2) Over the last decade, Miami/Oklahoma have both produced 19 Pro Bowlers, most of any college; Texas is next, with 14.

    1) If I’m starting a baseball team and have my choice of Pedroia/Cano, I’m taking Cano every day and twice on Sunday. He’s productive and durable and that’s all I care about. Seattle is getting hot now that they've got Iwakuma back in the rotation.

Game of the Day: Penguins at Rangers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers (+101, 5)

With questioning his postseason performance becoming a rite of spring in some circles, Marc-Andre Fleury has quelled that talk by posting back-to-back shutouts to help the Pittsburgh Penguins seize a 2-1 advantage in its Eastern Conference series versus the New York Rangers. The Metropolitan Division champions look to push the Rangers to the brink of elimination when they visit Madison Square Garden for Game 4 on Wednesday. After recording 22 saves in a 3-0 triumph in Game 2 on Sunday, Fleury turned aside 35 shots the following day to register his franchise-best eighth career postseason shutout.

"I've won a lot of hockey games with Marc-Andre Fleury in net, during the regular season and when our team won a Stanley Cup in 2009," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said after his team's 2-0 victory in Game 3. "I don't know who the doubters are and when the questions started about his play ... but I can tell you he wins hockey games for us." Traditionally a punchless power play goes a long way toward losing hockey games as well, with New York failing on all 13 opportunities with the man advantage in the series and 34 straight overall.

        TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

        LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the Rangers anywhere from +101 to -110. The total opened at 5.

        INJURY REPORT:
Penguins - D Brooks Orpik (Out indefinitely, undisclosed). Rangers - LW Chris Kreider (Out indefinitely, hand).

        ABOUT THE PENGUINS:
Sidney Crosby tucked the puck past Henrik Lundqvist on Monday, the first time the Pittsburgh captain had done so since helping Canada claim the gold against Sweden at the Sochi Olympics. His country's allegiance notwithstanding, Crosby snapped a 13-game postseason goal-scoring drought and also lightened the load of any undo pressure. "It's nice not having to answer (media questions) about it, to be honest," the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award finalist said. "It's one game. In the playoffs you have to be able to turn the page quickly. It’s nice to finally score."

        ABOUT THE RANGERS:
Coach Alain Vigneault took a shot at the league's powers-that-be for putting his club in position to play five games in seven nights, becoming the first team to do so in the postseason since 1989. "We were forced to play a stupid schedule, and I'm real proud of how our guys handled it," Vigneault said. The Rangers could receive a boost from the potential return of Chris Kreider, who has missed the last 19 games following surgery on his left hand. Vigneault said he would talk to the doctors before answering any questions on Kreider's availability.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 8-2-1 in the last 11 meetings in New York.
        * Penguins are 12-4 in the last 16 meetings.
        * Rangers are 11-2 in their last 13 Wednesday games.
        * Over is 11-5-1 in Penguins last 17 games playing on 1 days rest.

        CONSENSUS:
54 percent of wagers are coming on the Rangers.

Home dogs cash in on the ice Tuesday

With the Montreal Canadiens defeating the Boston Bruins 4-2 and the Minnesota Wild clawing their way back into their series with a 4-0 shutout of the Chicago Blackhawks, the home underdogs cashed in Tuesday night.

Both the Habs and Wild closed +117 on the moneyline (Pinnacle Sports) as home dogs.

Being the home dog has been a rare occurrence as it's just the second and third time in the previous seven days that a home team has skated out onto the ice as a dog.

There is just one game on the board Wednesday as the New York Rangers are currently -102 at home versus the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Wild remain perfect at home in playoffs with win over Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks kept the Minnesota Wild quiet for the first two games of their playoff series, and the first two periods of Game 3. But the final 20 minutes on Tuesday was anything but quiet.

Frustrated offensively for the first eight periods of their series with the Blackhawks, the Wild offense awoke from its slumber in a big way. Left winger Erik Haula and center Mikael Granlund snapped a scoreless tie early in the third period, getting goals less than three minutes apart as the Wild remained perfect at home in the postseason with a 4-0 win. Chicago now leads the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinals series 2-1.

Goaltender Illya Bryzgalov had 19 saves for Minnesota, which managed just three goals in losing the series' first two games in Chicago. Left winger Zach Parise added a power-play goal for the Wild late in the third and Granlund tacked on an empty-net goal with 77 seconds remaining.

NOTES: Blackhawks D Niklas Hjalmarsson could not speak Tuesday, still suffering the effects of a shot by Wild D Jonas Brodin that hit him in the throat during Sunday's game in Chicago. Regardless, Hjalmarsson started on the blue line for the Hawks and took a hooking penalty less than two minutes into the game. ... Wild D Keith Ballard was back in the lineup Tuesday, for the first time in nearly two months. Ballard, a veteran who signed with his home state team over the summer, played 45 regular-season games but had been out of the lineup since suffering a groin injury March 17. He last played in the playoffs in 2012 for the Vancouver Canucks. ... Chicago F Andrew Shaw did not travel to Minnesota for Tuesday game, but the Blackhawks hinted that he may be able to play in Game 4 on Friday. Shaw was injured in the opening game of the series, suffering a right leg injury after a check by Wild D Clayton Stoner. ... Game 4 in the series will be played on Friday night at 9:30 p.m. ET in Minnesota.

Favorites go 2-0 ATS as Heat, Spurs prevail

After the underdog went 2-0 against the spread in the first pair of Conference semifinal matchups, the fave bounced back Tuesday night.

Both the Miami Heat (-8) and San Antonio Spurs (-6.5) covered as home faves Tuesday to cash in for their backers.

With a pair of Game 2's on the board Wednesday, the Indiana Pacers are 4.5-point home faves versus the Washington Wizards and the Oklahoma City Thunder are 5.5-point home faves with the Los Angeles Clippers visiting. Both home teams will try to even up their best-of-seven series.

Dodgers' OF Yasiel Puig, questionable Wednesday

Puig is recovering from a head injury and has missed the last two games. He is questionable for play Wednesday against the Nationals.

Mariners win fourth straight, get back above .500

Fernando Rodney was warming in the bullpen of O.co Coliseum, preparing himself for what was expected to be another nail-biter of a save situation on Tuesday night.

But teammates decided to give him a night off.

The Mariners turned a 4-3 lead into an 8-3 win, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth and rolling to an easy win over the Oakland A’s. The victory put them over .500 at 16-15 for the first time since April 15. They’ve now won four in a row and nine of their last 11 games — their best stretch of success this season. That eight-game losing streak seems like a distant memory. With a .516 winning percentage, they moved into second place in the division just ahead of Texas’ 17-16 record and .515 winning percentage. It seemed impossible two weeks ago.

RHP Leon set for long-awaited debut with A's

Right-hander Arnold Leon's long journey to the major leagues will end Wednesday when he is officially recalled from Triple-A Sacramento for the Oakland Athletics' doubleheader against the Seattle Mariners.

Leon likely will be available out of the bullpen, but there is a chance he could start the second game Wednesday. Either way, it will be a special day for Leon, whose professional career began in 2006 with Saltillo of the Mexican League at the age of 17.

Rangers 1B Moreland shines on mound

Mitch Moreland collected his fifth consecutive pinch hit Tuesday, an eighth-inning single, but that was the least interesting part of his evening.

The veteran first baseman took the mound in the bottom of the eighth with the Rangers trailing the Rockies by 11 runs. He retired three consecutive batters, and Colorado completed a 12-1 win.

Moreland became the sixth position player to pitch for the Rangers, making the seventh such appearance in franchise history. The last position player to take the mound for Texas was David Murphy on June 4, 2013, at Boston.

Moreland threw 15 pitches, 10 strikes, while getting Jordan Pacheco and Corey Dickerson to fly to right and Charlie Blackmon to hit a comebacker.

A closer at Mississippi State, Moreland made only one other professional pitching appearance before Tuesday. In 2008 at low Class A Clinton, he pitched two scoreless innings in two games.

                      Pirates win on overturned call

Starling Marte begrudgingly admitted after being part of a historic moment that he is softening his stance on the use of expanded instant replay in the major leagues this season.

"I like it sometimes, I guess," the Pittsburgh Pirates left fielder said. "I like it this time."

Thanks to an overturned call, Marte wound up scoring the winning run after tripling and racing home on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Pirates edged the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Tuesday night.

It was the first time a game-ending run resulted from a changed call, and it ended the Giants' six-game winning streak.

Marte hit a drive high off the 21-foot Clemente Wall in right field with two outs off Tim Hudson (4-2). Rookie second baseman Ehire Adrianza, serving as the cutoff man, took the throw from right fielder Hunter Pence and then threw wildly to third base.

Marte initially hesitated and then raced home, but home plate Quinn Wolcott called him out. However, following a replay review of 1:14, it was ruled that catcher Buster Posey's tag was late and Marte was called safe.

NOTES: Both teams called up relief pitchers to aid bullpens that were stretched by Monday night's 12-inning game that was won by the Giants 11-10. San Francisco recalled RHP George Kontos from Triple-A Fresno and optioned RHP Jake Dunning to the same club. The Pirates recalled RHP Phil Irwin from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned LHP Jeff Locke to the same club. ... Giants 2B Brandon Hicks was the only regular from either team who did not start following Monday night's five-hour, 29-minute game. ... Pittsburgh OF Travis Snider (two games) and C Russell Martin (one game) had the appeals of their suspensions from Major League Baseball for their actions in an April 20 brawl with the Milwaukee heard by videoconference Tuesday afternoon. ... The three-game series concludes Wednesday afternoon with San Francisco RHP Tim Lincecum (2-1, 5.12 ERA) facing Pirates RHP Gerrit Cole (2-2, 3.69 ERA).

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Wainwright strong versus NL East foes
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Low in San Diego

The Padres continued trending as the best Under play in the league, moving to 8-23-3 O/U in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to visiting Kansas City. Not even lower totals have made a difference, as San Diego is now 5-9 O/U with the number set at 6.5. That's the total for Wednesday's rematch with the Royals (+101).

                        Wainwright Loves the East

St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright has enjoyed success in NL East locales as he leads the Cardinals (-120, 6.5) into Atlanta as one of only two road favorites on the day. Wainwright is 6-1 in his last seven starts in NL East cities, with his only loss coming to the Braves last July 26.

                        Rick the Slick

Rick Porcello and the Detroit Tigers are whopping -230 favorites against the visiting Houston Astros. Porcello has won his last four starts as a fave of -200 or more, posting a 3.12 ERA in that span while recording quality starts in each outing.

                        Pitching Notes

                        * San Francisco Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum has learned to make do without racking up the strikeouts, going 6-1 in his last seven starts in which he has had five or fewer Ks. The Giants (+118, 7) visit the Pittsburgh Pirates.

                        * Cincinnati Reds hurler Bronson Arroyo has held opponents without a homer in back-to-back starts. He hasn't done so in three straight since the middle of the 2012 season. Arroyo and the Reds (+131, 8.5) will be in tough against the host Boston Red Sox.

                        Hitting Notes

                        * Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki continued his torrid hitting Tuesday, raising his average to .421 with a 3-for-4 performance in a 12-1 drubbing of the Texas Rangers. Tulowitzki has seven multi-hit efforts in the last eight games, helping the Rockies to a 7-1 O/U mark over that stretch.

                        * Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is also on fire, extending his hitting streak to eight games with a 3-for-5 effort in Tuesday's 7-5 win over Milwaukee. Arizona, which is 6-1-1 O/U during that stretch, is a +128 underdog against the Brewers Wednesday.

                        Total Streak

Minnesota Twins (0-6-0 O/U): The Twins have been getting sensational efforts from their pitching staff, allowing four runs or fewer in each of their past six games. Unfortunately, the offense has gone south at the same time, managing more than three runs just twice over that stretch.

                        Prop of the Day

Oddsmakers aren't confident in the Oakland Athletics' ability to hang a big number on Seattle ace Felix Hernandez in the opener of their doubleheader. The Athletics are a +160 underdog to have the highest-scoring inning in that game, compared to Seattle at +125 and a tie result at +275.

                        Key Injuries

                        * The Baltimore Orioles are expected to place catcher Matt Wieters (elbow) on the disabled list. Wieters is hitting a career-best .341 so far this season, and the Orioles are 6-4 against the moneyline and 5-4-1 O/U in games in which he records more than one hit; they're +125 underdogs against Tampa Bay.

                        * Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins is dealing with a groin injury that has limited him to pinch-hitting duty in consecutive games. The Phillies, who are 0-4 on the year in games in which Rollins has been unavailable to start, are +106 underdogs against Toronto Wednesday.

                        Weather Watch

                        * Fans at O.co Coliseum in Oakland will see sunny skies and wind blowing out to right field at 11 mph. Teams averaged 7.98 per game in 41 contests last season with winds blowing east to west at better than 10 mph - only slightly better than the stadium average.

                        * The latest installment of the Cubs-White Sox rivalry at U.S. Cellular Field will see wind blowing in from right field at 11 mph. Teams averaged just 6.5 runs per game in six games under such conditions a season ago, well below the stadium average of 8.15.

                        Umpire Note of the Day

The road team is 7-1 in umpire Todd Tichenor's last eight games behind home plate. Tichenor will call the balls and strikes for the game between the Cardinals and the Braves.

Wizards at Pacers: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Wizards at Indiana Pacers (-4.5, 184.5)

The Washington Wizards had no trouble going into Chicago and taking the first two games of their first-round series from the Bulls. The Wizards will try to turn the same trick when they visit the Indiana Pacers for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Wednesday. Washington dominated most of the night in Game 1 and ended up with a 102-96 victory as Trevor Ariza got hot early and Bradley Beal warmed up late.

The Pacers took the final two games of their first-round series from the Atlanta Hawks by changing up their rotation and making use of Chris Copeland while sitting Evan Turner and Luis Scola. Indiana decided to abandon that in Game 1 against the Wizards and did not insert Copeland into the game until the final minute when the outcome was already decided. Washington improved to 4-0 on the road in the playoffs with the victory and beat the Pacers at their own game by dominating the interior with a 53-36 rebounding advantage. “We know this is going to be a war and winning the boards is important to us,” Wizards coach Randy Wittman told reporters. “When we rebound, we can get out and run.”

                              TV:
                              7 p.m. ET, TNT

                              ABOUT THE WIZARDS:
Ariza went 6-of-6 from 3-point range in Game 1, hitting five of those in the first half as Washington built up a 13-point halftime lead. Beal scored 14 of his 25 in the fourth quarter and came through at the line in the final seconds after some shaky free-throw shooting earlier in the contest. “We try to play a fast-paced game,” Ariza told reporters. “(Point guard) John (Wall) is a speed demon and they have to stop him from getting to the basket, so our shooters follow him and stay ready to shoot.” Wall went 4-of-14 from the field but finished with 13 points, nine assists and one turnover in Game 1.

                              ABOUT THE PACERS:
A big theme of the first round was the disappearance of All-Star Roy Hibbert, who needed a solid Game 7 just to get his averages up to 5.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in the seven-game set. Hibbert went back to being invisible in Game 1 on Monday, recording zero points and zero rebounds while committing five fouls in 18 minutes. Fellow All-Star Paul George struggled to 4-of-17 from the field and David West was 6-of-15 en route to 15 points and 12 rebounds. “We were really just out of rhythm,” George said. “Shots weren’t falling, shots were short. We just weren’t in sync to start this game off.”

                              TRENDS:

                              * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Indiana.
                              * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
                              * Wizards are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games playing on one days' rest.
                              * Pacers are 5-25 ATS in their last 30 games playing on one days' rest.

                              BUZZER BEATERS:

                              1. Wizards F Drew Gooden collected 12 points and 13 rebounds in Game 1 after totaling two points and three boards in the first round.

                              2. Indiana G George Hill has scored at least 14 points in five straight games.

                              3. Washington went 10-of-16 from 3-point range in Game 1.
