    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Both road teams won second round NBA games, with unheralded Washington looking like a dangerous team in the east.

-- Penguins blanked the Rangers for the second night in row; cruel schedule for New York, playing five games in seven nights.

-- Bronx bullpen imploded in Anaheim; they walked six Angels in 8th inning, with Halos scoring three runs without a hit in a 4-1 Anaheim win.

-- Royals blew a 3-0 6th inning lead, 4-3 9th inning lead, 5-4 12th inning lead in a hideous 6-5 loss at San Diego- they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

-- Pirates botched a bunt play in 13th inning and lost 11-10 at home to the Giants, who are now 21-11. Pirates are 12-20, just 8-10 at home.

-- If you look at first five innings of the 13 games Monday, both teams scored in first five innings in only three of those 13 games. Under was 9-4 overall Monday.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) In case you don’t think eliminating (or at least greatly reducing) PEDs in baseball has made a difference, check this out: in 2000, 17 of 30 major league teams scored 800+ runs for the season; last year, only the Red Sox scored 800+. In 2004, 37 guys hit 30+ homers; LY, 14 did. Hmmm.....

    12) Ben Affleck has been banned from playing blackjack at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas; why? He was making too much money, and was suspected of card counting, which isn’t illegal, but casinos can banish you if they think you’re doing it. Affleck is married to Jennifer Garner, so he gets no sympathy here.

    11) Starting in 2015-16, Big East/Big 14 will open basketball season against each other with a series of made-for-TV games, some to be shown on the Big 14 Network, some on Fox Sports1. It’ll get confusing when Rutgers plays in one of these games; which league will they be representing (Big 14, from now on).

    10) In 14th inning Friday night, having already been taken out of the game, Rays’ OF David DeJesus was watching the game on the top step of the Tampa Bay dugout while eating an ice cream bar.

Looked like a Nestle Crunch bar. Never saw that before.

    9) Jeff Samardzija threw 126 pitches on a cold night against the White Sox last night at Wrigley, which tells me two things.....
    a) Cubs management really wanted to beat the White Sox (they didn't)
    b) On August 1, Samardzija will be on another team; they're not protecting his arm at all- if he is a part of your future, Samardzija doesn't throw 126 pitches on May 5 in a rivalry game, but a game between non-contending teams. On a cold night. .

    8) UConn got scared by rumors of the Lakers’ interest in Kevin Ollie, and all of a sudden wants to double his $1.25M salary. This is where a reporter can do a coach a huge favor; plant some bogus rumor like that, and all of a sudden the coach hits the lottery. Maybe the Lakers really are interested; maybe they’re not, but Ollie’s bank account is going to get fatter pretty soon.

    7) Speaking of which, Wes Welker won some cash on the Kentucky Derby in Louisville Saturday; he was so happy about it, he started handing out $100 bills to random strangers, before cops stopped him from inciting a stampede. Must be nice to be rich.

    6) Did you know that Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn?

    5) I’d love an NFL team to draft a QB then say, “We’re not going to play Player A for a year or two, so he can learn by watching, then step in and play when he is good and ready." Eli Manning sat behind Kurt Warner for 6-7 games as a rookie, but since Ryan/Flacco in 2008, patience and development have been abandoned- it hurts the player involved and the team. Nothing wrong with letting a kid observe and learn.

    4) I wish I was making this up: The guy who wore the Mr Met costume in 1994 has written a book. Seriously. “Yes Its Hot In Here” is the name of the book. No I have not read it. Hard to believe its that good a book, but then again, its got to be better than Kenny Mayne’s book was and I wasted $26 on that, so there……..

    3) Oregon PG Dominic Artis has left the Ducks, will transfer with two years left to play; he has a terrific freshman season, but his second year was marred by injury, off-court issues-- he got buried on the Oregon bench. He’ll help some team, starting in the fall of 2015.

    2) Oregon State sacked basketball coach Craig Robinson, paying him $4M to go away; the President’s brother-in-law didn’t get the Beavers to the NCAAs in six years in Corvallis, and with no returning starters, this coming season didn’t look to be much better. President Obama only makes $400,000 a year; Robinson got $4M to go away. Go figure.

    1) If I’m the Oregon State AD, I’m hiring Eric Musselman as head coach; he has NBA head coaching experience and knows the Pac-12, having been an assistant at Arizona State up until last month. That said, it appears that Ben Howland is the guy Oregon State is targeting- he has coached in three Final Fours.

The Green Flag: Hamlin's surprising win at Talladega unsurprising

Denny Hamlin's victory in Sunday's Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway was a surprise.

      Then again, it wasn't.

If you're trying to pick a winner for a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points race at a restrictor-plate race track, Hamlin probably wouldn't head your list.

After all, there are plenty of more likely candidates, based on past performance. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Clint Bowyer and Jamie McMurray come to mind immediately, and that's just for starters.

That doesn't mean Hamlin hasn't run well in plate races. On occasion, he has. He just hadn't managed to win one -- until Sunday.

On that basis, you could call Hamlin a surprise winner at Talladega.

But in no way, shape or form, is it surprising that Hamlin has picked up a victory in the first 10 races of the season. In handicapping probable race winners -- and hence, probable participants in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup -- Hamlin would have been on everyone's short list before the season started.

In fact, it would have been better than even odds that all three Joe Gibbs Racing drivers -- Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth -- all would have qualified for NASCAR's playoff.

So don't look at Hamlin's victory at Talladega as a shocker. It wasn't. Just congratulate the driver of the No. 11 Toyota for expanding his resume.

--Post-race tech complete. No issues. The three cars heading to the R&D center are the three cars that are still intact.

--Denny Hamlin was victorious in the Aaron's 499. Always great when that glimmer in a driver's eye is from the elation of a big race win and NOT from the sun reflecting off a small piece of metal.

--Denny Hamlin takes home $303,315 for winning the race. Or 649,493,145.65 in Dogecoin. His choice.

--Brad Keselowski feels bad, and wants to take everyone out again, but this time for a beer or something.

      NASCAR Numbers

4: The number of finishes outside the top 20 for Jimmie Johnson in the first 10 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. That's the most since 2009, when Johnson also had four results outside the top 20 in the first 10 races. But, oh, by the way, Johnson went on to win the series championship that year.

5: The number of former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champions involved in "The Big One" in Sunday's Aaron's 499 at Talladega. On Lap 137, 2012 champion Brad Keselowski triggered a wreck that also collected Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth, who have 14 titles between them.

11: The finishing position at Talladega of Landon Cassill, who kept the No. 40 Hillman Racing Chevrolet in the top 10 for much of Sunday afternoon. That result was a career best for Cassill in 201 Sprint Cup starts, bettering a pair of 12th-place finishes at Michigan and Daytona.

23.3: Kyle Busch's average finish in 13 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at Kansas Speedway, statistically Busch's worst track. The driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota has but two top 10s at Kansas, and no top fives. He has led 85 laps there, his lowest total by far at a 1.5-mile intermediate speedway.

5: The number of drivers who have won two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway, suggesting that success breeds success at the 1.5-mile track. In 16 total races at Kansas, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth have won twice each. Kesneth is the only one of the five to win in two different car makes (Ford and Toyota).

      NASCAR ETC.

Next up on the schedule is Kansas, home to Michael Waltrip Racing's Clint Bowyer, who will be making his 300th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career start this weekend. In even bigger news for MWR, 5-Hour ENERGY, Bowyer and crew chief Brian Pattie all signed multi-year contract extensions this week that will take effect in 2015. ... Reed Sorenson will also be making a milestone career start this weekend, his 200th in the series. ... Ryan Blaney, son of NASCAR Sprint Cup veteran Dave Blaney, will be making his series debut in the No. 12 SKF Ford for Team Penske this weekend at Kansas Speedway. Ryan Blaney has made one start in the NCWTS at Kansas resulting in a third-place finish and one start in the NNS producing an 11th-place finish. ... Dave Blaney is also entered this weekend. ... The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series set a new record for Green Flag Passes for the Lead (GFPFL) during the spring race at Talladega last weekend. Last weekend's race produced 188 Green Flag Passes for the Lead, the most for a Talladega spring race, and third-most since NASCAR introduced the stat in 2005.

Veteran Spurs won Game 7 Sunday; Portland won Game 6 two days earlier, so they had little extra prep time. Game of the Day: Nets at Heat
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brooklyn Nets at Miami Heat (-7, 191.5)

The Brooklyn Nets won all four regular-season contests against Miami this season and recording four more would qualify as quite the upset as they prepare to face the host Heat in Tuesday’s opener of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Brooklyn won three of the meetings by a single point and also recorded a 104-95 double-overtime victory as a veteran group led by Paul Pierce isn’t intimidated by LeBron James and his teammates. Miami is certainly the more rested team after completing a sweep of the Charlotte Bobcats on April 28.

The sixth-seeded Nets went seven games against Toronto in the first round before squeezing out a 104-103 win on Sunday to advance but are highly confident in terms of facing the two-time defending champions. “We know we can beat them, but it is going to be a lot different from the regular season in the playoffs,” swingman Joe Johnson said after Sunday’s win. “So we understand that we will definitely have our work cut out for us and it is going to take a collective team effort.” Miami knows it will have to play better in the playoffs to stymie Brooklyn. “Hats off to them because they beat us four times,” guard Ray Allen told reporters. “We don’t particularly like how we played in those games.”

          TV:
          7 p.m. ET, TNT

          LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the Heat as 7-point home faves. The total opened 191.5.

          INJURY REPORT:
Brooklyn Nets - C Brook Lopez (out for season, foot). Miami Heat - F Michael Beasley (Questionable, ankle).

          ABOUT THE NETS:
Brooklyn has a veteran group led by Johnson and Pierce that won’t succumb to the playoff pressure against the Heat. Forward Kevin Garnett is no longer the big-time force but he is always ready to mix it up on the boards and point guard Deron Williams thrives when he’s in attack mode – which the Nets will need him to be to slay the Heat. Part of the offseason spending spree was designed with Miami in mind and the regular-season success is at least an indication that the series won’t be one-sided. Getting solid contributions from complimentary players like guards Alan Anderson, Shaun Livingston and Marcus Thornton and forwards Andray Blatche and Mirza Teletovic will be necessary.

          ABOUT THE HEAT:
The extended break should be good for James’ injured thigh and guard Dwyane Wade’s troublesome knees. James was injured in Game 4 of the series against Charlotte and has been undergoing treatment and told reporters that he will be “close to 100 percent” for the series opener. Miami could use some improved interior play against Brooklyn after being outrebounded by an average of 6.3 boards in the four regular-season meetings. Udonis Haslem was in a starting role against the Bobcats but veteran reserve Chris Andersen (8.5 points, 4.3 rebounds in the series) was a much more significant contributor.

          TRENDS:

          * Nets are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
          * Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Miami.
          * Nets are 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings in Miami.
          * Heat are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a ATS win.

          CONSENSUS:
52 percent of wagers on Covers Consensus are on the Brooklyn Nets .

Bruins at Canadiens: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens (+127, 5)

The Montreal Canadiens are glad to return to the comforts of home after finding themselves in unfamiliar territory following their first loss of the postseason. After squandering a two-goal lead in the third period en route to a 5-3 setback on Saturday, the Canadiens attempt to regain the lead in their Eastern Conference second-round series when they host the Boston Bruins in Game 3 on Tuesday. Boston erupted for four goals in under an eight-minute stretch in the final session as Montreal saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt.

The Canadiens have enjoyed a potent power play in the series, with defenseman P.K. Subban scoring twice in Game 1 and Thomas Vanek doing the same with the man advantage in Game 2. Boston, on the other hand, has seen a significant dip in its power-play production. The Bruins have failed on all five power plays against Montreal after putting forth a blistering 6-for-16 performance in their first-round series versus Detroit.

            TV:
7 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

            ABOUT THE BRUINS:
Defenseman Andrej Meszaros struggled in his first game since returning to the lineup, committing a costly penalty which led to the first of Vanek's two power-play goals. Ironically, Meszaros played in place of fellow blue-liner Matt Bartkowski, who was in the box for holding in the second overtime as Subban scored the winning goal in Game 1. Speaking of defensemen, the team announced that Adam McQuaid underwent arthroscopic surgery on his ankle but did not offer any other details.

            ABOUT THE CANADIENS:
Although Rene Bourque has been hard to contain in the postseason, he temporarily was held in check by the flu bug on Monday. The team's unlikely leading goal scorer through six games, Bourque missed practice due to the illness, but coach Michel Therrien believes he'll be ready to play on Tuesday. Bourque has netted four tallies and set up another in the postseason after mustering just nine goals and seven assists in 63 regular-season contests.

            TRENDS:

            * Bruins are 2-7 in the last nine meetings
            * Under is 3-0-1 in the last four meetings in Montreal.
            * Bruins are 9-2 in their last 11 Conference Semifinals games.
            * Over is 4-0-2 in Canadiens last six overall.

            OVERTIME:

            1. Boston D Dougie Hamilton has collected two goals and four assists during his five-game point streak.

            2. Subban has recorded multi-point performances in each contest of this series to extend his point streak to five games.

            3. Boston G Tuukka Rask became a father as his girlfriend gave birth to the couple's first child - a girl - over the weekend.

Trail Blazers at Spurs: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Portland Trail Blazers at San Antonio Spurs (-6.5, 205.5)

The Portland Trail Blazers went to overtime three times in the first round and needed a last-second jumper from Damian Lillard to avoid a Game 7. Their reward for such perseverance is a date with the top-seeded San Antonio Spurs, who host Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals on Tuesday. The Spurs went seven games with the Dallas Mavericks but left no doubt who was the better team with a 119-96 drubbing in Game 7.

San Antonio gave Portland a performance about which to worry on Sunday when it led by as much as 31 points and was never challenged in the second half. “I’m certainly glad it’s over,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. “(The first-round series) kept many of us up, night after night, trying to figure (the Mavericks) out. We’re thrilled, and I think our best game was (Game 7).” The Trail Blazers echoed similar sentiments upon reaching the second round for the first time since 2000 and have the shooters to spread San Antonio out.

                      TV:
                      9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

                      ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS:
Lillard was the hero with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in a 99-98 Game 6 victory but LaMarcus Aldridge came out of the first round as a star after putting up back-to-back 40-point outings to start the series and averaging 29.8 points and 11.2 rebounds in the six games. “It was a great series,“ Aldridge told reporters. “We feel like we got better from it … and we feel like we should be better for the next round.” Aldridge’s mid-range game will force Spurs star Tim Duncan outside the paint, leaving room for Lillard to drive and Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum space to spot up on the perimeter. Lillard averaged 25.5 points and 6.7 assists against the Rockets and went 23-of-47 from 3-point range.

                      ABOUT THE SPURS:
San Antonio All-Star point guard Tony Parker won’t hoist as many 3-pointers as Lillard but will make the young Portland star work on the defensive end by attacking the paint and running the pick-and-roll with Duncan and Tiago Splitter. Parker put up 32 points in the Game 7 victory on Sunday and averaged 19.9 in the series. Duncan averaged 17.3 points on 58 percent shooting and 8.4 rebounds in the first round and Manu Ginobili put up 17.7 points in the series to cap a strong showing for the “Big Three.” The Spurs also got a boost from Danny Green, who struggled early in the series but came on with 16.5 points on 12-of-14 shooting in the last two games.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
                      * Trail Blazers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games.
                      * Spurs are 1-8 ATS in their last nine games overall.
                      * Over is 5-1 in Spurs last six overall.

                      BUZZER BEATERS:

                      1. Lillard averages 26.3 points in seven career games against the Spurs.

                      2. The teams split four regular-season meetings, with each taking one game on the other’s home court.

                      3. Splitter shot 61.9 percent in the opening round and should be well rested after playing only 15 minutes while dealing with foul trouble in Game 7.

                        MLB

                        Tuesday, May 6

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Tuesday's MLB betting cheat sheet
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Going Low

The "under" bet was a strong play Monday, with a 3-9-1 O/U mark representing one of the strongest single-day results all season. Only San Francisco's 11-10 win over Pittsburgh, Milwaukee's 8-3 victory over Arizona and San Diego's 6-5 triumph over Kansas City exceeded their respective totals.

                        Diamondbacks Still Snakebitten

No team has returned worse value than the Diamondbacks, and that trend continued with Monday's loss to the Brewers. Arizona fell to -1,358 units for the season, and is installed as a +136 underdog for Tuesday's contest in Milwaukee.

                        Home Favorites Abound

Bettors looking for some strong road favorites will be disappointed Tuesday. Only one team is listed as a road fave - San Francisco is at -112 against the host Pirates - although the Los Angeles Dodgers may be favored against Washington when those odds are posted later Tuesday.

                        Pitching Notes

                        * San Francisco Giants hurler Tim Hudson has been one of the most reliable starters in the majors of late, going 10-1 against the moneyline in his last 11 starts. Hudson is also on a three-game "under" streak, after putting together runs of 0-3, 6-0-1, 0-5 and 5-0 O/U last season.

                        * Kansas City Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie is a sensational "under" play away from Kauffman Stadium, going 1-10-1 O/U in his previous 12 road outings. Guthrie and the Royals (+104, 7) face Robbie Erlin and the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.

                        Hitting Notes

                        * San Francisco Giants catcher/first baseman Buster Posey has six multi-hit efforts in his last eight games, raising his average 68 points to .292 while helping his team go 7-1 in that span. His surge hasn't done much for the Giants' totals, however; they're just 2-6 O/U over that stretch.

                        * Minnesota Twins first baseman Chris Colabello has cooled off after a hot start, going just 5-for-40 with one RBI in his last nine games. Not surprisingly, the Twins - one of the hottest "over" plays in the first month of the season - have gone 0-5 O/U in their last five.

                        Total Streaks

Seattle Mariners (7-2-1 O/U): The Mariners' offense has been firing on all cylinders over the past week, averaging nearly six runs to lead the club to a 6-1 record over its last seven games. Seattle is a +155 underdog Tuesday against host Oakland.

                        Prop of the Day

Extra innings could mean extra cash for bettors with the stomach to make a bet on the Texas Rangers and Colorado Rockies. The teams are -1,400 to play more than nine innings - tied with the Houston Astros-Detroit Tigers matchup for the longest extra-innings odds of the day.

                        Injury Watch

                        * Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw is expected to return to the rotation after spending the majority of the season on the disabled list with a back injury. Kershaw has been a strong under play since the middle of last season, going 4-12-2 O/U in his last 18 starts.

                        * Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie left Monday's game with tightness in his right hamstring and is questionable for Tuesday. Lawrie had gone 14-for-30 in his previous seven games, helping the Blue Jays post a 6-1 O/U mark in that span.

                        Weather Watch

                        * Fans at Progressive Field should expect partly cloudy skies and wind blowing in from right field at 9 mph for the game between the host Indians (-141, 8) and the Twins. Teams batted .247 in 16 games last season with the wind blowing in from right.

                        * Wind at Angel Stadium of Anaheim will blow out to center field at 9 mph for Tuesday's game against the visiting Yankees (+126, 8). Teams averaged nearly nine combined runs per game in 49 contests in 2013 with the wind blowing out to center.

                        Umpire Note of the Day

The home team is 14-3 in umpire Mark Carlson's last 17 games behind home plate involving the Padres. Carlson will call the balls and strikes when San Diego entertains Kansas City.

Playoffs offer no rest, odds on more seven game series'

The NBA Playoffs has offered no rest for the weary. Five of the eight first round series went to Game 7 and history says that there is a good chance those teams will still have a lot of games to play.

Of the last 75 teams to win a full seven games series, 34 of their following series have also gone seven games. That means that 45.3 percent of teams that go through a grueling seven game series are going to have to struggle through the same fate in the next round.

Of the 75 series' 17 finished up in six games, 18 ended at Game 5 and six were series sweeps.

Road dogs hot on the hardcourt for bettors

Round 2 of the NBA Playoffs kicked off Monday with a lot of disappointed home fans. Both the visiting Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers won their respective games and put another notch on the belt of the road dogs.

Between Sunday and Monday the road dog has won three of the four NBA games outright, with the lone failure to win being the Dallas Mavericks getting beat up by the San Antonio Spurs.

Tuesday's action sees the Brooklyn Nets (+7) and the Portland trail Blazers (+6.5) as road dogs.

                          MLB

                          Tuesday, May 6

Under has big day on the diamond Monday

The under bettors enjoyed themselves a big day in the MLB on Monday. With 14 games on the schedule, the teams failed to top the total in nine carrying a 3-9-1 O/U record.

Monday marks the second day in a row that the under run has been trending for bettors, with a combined 9-17-2 O/U record through Sunday and Monday.

All four games in American League action went under Monday.

Wind, rain in forecast for Wrigley Field

The Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs opened their series with pitchers' wind at Wrigley Field Monday, and it kept the scoreline now as the Sox prevailed 3-1 in extra innings.

More wind is in the forecast for Tuesday's game as well.

According to DailyBaseballData.com, forecasts for Chicago are calling for wind blowing in from right field at 15 mph and a 30-to-40 percent chance of showers.

Edwin Jackson is scheduled to start for the Cubs and Hector Noesi is slated to get the ball for the Sox. The Cubs are currently -120 home faves.

Mariners hand Scott Kazmir first loss, reach .500

After being dominated by him once already this season, the Mariners did something no one else had done so far this season — saddle Oakland Athletics hard-throwing left-hander Scott Kazmir with a defeat.

Kazmir came into Monday night’s game with a spotless 4-0 record in six starts with a sparkling 2.11 earned-run average. In a previous start against the Mariners on April 13 at Safeco Field, Kazmir threw six shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out nine but not figuring in the decision.

But past dominance mattered little to a suddenly surging Seattle squad. The Mariners scored four runs off Kazmir — the most he’s allowed this season — and then hung on for a 4-2 victory at a sparsely populated O.co Coliseum.

The win pushed the Mariners’ record to .500 at 15-15. They have won three straight and eight of their last 10 games.

Giants' Cain aims for Saturday return

Matt Cain's stay on the disabled list is likely to be a short one. The San Francisco Giants right-hander expects to be activated Saturday for a start against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Cain originally was scheduled to pitch Monday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the Giants instead placed him on the 15-day disabled list following Sunday's win over the Braves in Atlanta because of a cut on the tip of index finger of his right hand. The move is retroactive to April 24.

"Just playing it safe," Cain said before the Giants rallied to beat the Pirates 11-10 in 13 innings. "I'll be fine."

The Giants changed their plans with Cain after the cut opened Sunday when he threw for the first time without a protective covering on the finger. However, the team's medical staff is confident Cain will be ready to pitch Saturday.
