    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

    -- Wizards 75, Bulls 69-- Washington's first series win since 2005.

-- Memphis 100, Oklahoma City 99 OT-- 4th OT game in row in series.

-- Flyers 5, Rangers 2-- Game 7 is tonight for some reason, in Manhattan.

-- Marlins 9, Braves 0-- Alex Fernandez is 12-0 in his career at home.

    -- Brewers 5, Cardinals 4 (11)-- Milwaukee is 20-7, 11-1 on the road.

    -- A's 9, Rangers 3-- Oakland beat Darvish/Perez on consecutive nights.

    *****

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Am guessing Adam Silver didn’t envision himself overshadowing the NBA playoffs in his first spring as Commissioner, but that’s what happened Tuesday at 2pm, when Silver put the hammer down on Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling.

Silver did an effective job diffusing an explosive situation. This kind of competence is what happens when you put a tall, bald man with glasses in charge. Ha!!!!

    12) The NBA is going nuts; Warriors fired an assistant coach because he was secretly taping coaches’ conversations with his cellphone, whether the conversations were amongst themselves or with players. No one is saying why he was taping them, whether he was writing a book or spying for the front office, but the taping was discovering and the assistant coach got the boot.

    11) If the guy has trouble finding a job, he should know Washington ($9.32/hour) has the highest minimum wage in the country; Wyoming/Georgia ($5.15) have the lowest. People who spy on co-workers can have trouble finding new jobs.

    10) Portland Trailblazers scored 473 points (118.3 ppg) in their first four playoff games, most by any team since Celtics scored 480 in their first four games in 1990.

    9) UNLV offered Charles O’Bannon Jr a scholarship this week; young man goes to Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, but is only in 9th grade. His dad and uncle both played for UCLA.

    8) Greedy bastard update: BP Oil Company made a $3.2B profit in first quarter of 2014, Shell made $4.47B and both of those figures are less than those companies made in the first quarter of 2013. Oy.

    7) Dodgers have a 2-8 record in games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on; Giants are 7-1 in games like that.

    6) Alabama/Florida are obviously both in the SEC, but since 1992, have met in the regular season only six times, which has the folks at LSU a little annoyed. LSU plays the Gators most every year, which doesn’t seem fair to the Bayou Bengals.

    5) Cleveland Browns will have Vince Young in for a tryout soon; Browns only have one QB signed, and Brian Hoyer blew his knee out early last season. Looks like either Young or Tyler Thigpen will win an invitation to training camp. .

    4) In some parts of Texas, speed limit is 85. Just thought you’d like to know.

    3) Gary Smith is one of our country’s great writers; he is retiring from Sports Illustrated after a tremendous career. Long time ago, before Jim Mora coached the Saints, Smith wrote a history of the Saints’ franchise, which at that time had been nothing but dismal failure—it was very funny but accurate. Think he worked for Sport Magazine back then. Mr Smith will be missed.

    2) Saw on the ESPN crawl Monday night than BYU already committed to play an AAC team in some bowl game in Miami in December.
#1—How does this help BYU’s season, motivation-wise, since their kids already know what bowl they’re going to?
#2—BYU has to win six games, or the deal is off- they have similar deals for the Poinsettia Bowl in both 2016/2018.

    1) At the end of the day Tuesday, it was good to see the focus back on games and away from politics and public outcries. Justice has been served, but Donald Sterling will still reap a fortune when he sells the Clippers. Just as long as he goes away.

Three live long-shot bets for the 2014 Kentucky Derby

It’s Kentucky Derby time. That means it’s time to shop for a few long shots worth backing. They might not hit the board, but if they do you will be rewarded for it.

In a field as wide open and generally undistinguished as the one racing bettors are faced with this year, the longer shots are the place to look. Here are three potential Kentucky Derby long shots that should go off at better than 20/1:

      Ride On Curlin (+2,400)

If Hollywood wrote a story about this horse you would dismiss it as unbelievable.

The trainer, nicknamed Bronco, toils at the lowest levels of the game and has fewer starts per year than Todd Pletcher has most weeks. He convinced an owner to buy a yearling - the first for either of them - and that was this horse. He’s a son of the great Curlin, so he is bred to run all day.

Calvin Borel is in the saddle - the magician who has hugged the rail to three Kentucky Derby wins. Borel is riding pretty horribly these days, but that doesn’t matter on Derby day. He has been racing well this spring despite not having a stakes win and he has a very versatile running style that should suit the situation. Stranger things have happened.

      Candy Boy (+2,500)

California Chrome is likely going to be the most overwhelming favorite since Big Brown in 2008. Hoppertunity is likely to be no worse than the third choice. Those two finished atop the Santa Anita Derby. In third was this forgotten horse.

He was clearly not as good as the top two that day, but he had also been off for two months and was shaking off a lot of rust. The time before that, he had a very professional and convincing win. Gary Stevens is in the irons and there’s no better guy to manage a horse - or to win a big race right now.

There are a lot of horses that will look to be on or near the pace early on and will be in trouble if they can’t get there. This horse would rather be just off the pace, but has shown that he can deal with having to move up later. He’s ready for a big effort.

      Wildcat Red (+2,500)

When a horse has been in the lead and is passed in the stretch, you almost always see it change. They sense they are beaten, retreat into themselves a little, and let the race happen around them. It’s in their nature, and especially common in younger horses like these.

In the Florida Derby, this horse set the pace the whole way before being passed at the top of the stretch by Constitution. Instead of giving up, though, he got mad and dug in.

It became a truly epic stretch duel. He wound up losing by a little more than a neck, but I saw more heart and determination in that horse than I ever expect from three year olds in the spring. Bettors aren’t in love with the breeding, the trainer, or the constant jockey changes, but when a horse is that tough in a race this wide open, he’s worth a look.

Game of the Day: Nets at Raptors
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brooklyn Nets at Toronto Raptors (-3.5, 191)

        Series tied 2-2.

Coming off one of the best wins in franchise history, the Toronto Raptors look to grab control of their Eastern Conference first-round series when they host the Brooklyn Nets in Game 5 on Wednesday. Toronto had not won a road playoff game since 2001 and was banged up, but it rallied to steal Game 4 in Brooklyn on Sunday by an 87-79 score, tying the series at two games apiece. The Raptors lost a 17-point lead but held the Nets scoreless over the final 4:58 to take back home-court advantage.

Perhaps the biggest key for Toronto was its ability to bottle up Brooklyn shooting guard Joe Johnson, who had seven points in 42 minutes after averaging 23.7 points in the first three games of the series. "Their defense was a big difference," Johnson told reporters after Game 4. "I mean, I looked out and there were three guys coming at me at once." DeMar DeRozan scored 24 points to lead the Raptors and is averaging 28 points over the last three contests.

        TV:
8 p.m. ET, NBATV, WWOR (Brooklyn), TSN (Toronto)

        LINE HISTORY:
Toronto opened as high as a 4-point favorite but has been bet down as low as -3. The total opened 191.

        INJURY REPORT:
        Nets - A. Anderson (Ques - Groin). Raptors - L. Fields (Ques. - Back)

        ABOUT THE NETS:
Brooklyn has a notable advantage in terms of experience, a factor many thought would eventually decide the series, but Toronto has outscored the Nets 88-66 in the fourth quarter over the last three games. "They're a younger team that doesn't have as much proper experience, but they ain't playing like it," guard Deron Williams said Sunday. Williams missed all five of his 3-point attempts in Game 4 as the Nets went 4-of-20 from outside the arc, falling to 25 percent for the series.

        ABOUT THE RAPTORS:
DeRozan has played through a hand injury for weeks, Kyle Lowry is limping through the series with knee issues and other Toronto players are banged up, but the club keeps coming. "We're really nicked up right now, so it was huge courage, really courageous by those guys," Toronto coach Dwane Casey said following Game 4. Among the others on the injured front is forward Amir Johnson, who left Game 4 with a knee injury before returning to polish off a 17-point effort.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Toronto.
        * Underdog is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings.
        * Road team is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings.

        CONSENSUS:
51 percent of bets are on Toronto -3.5 while 53 percent is on Over 191.

Kouzmanoff surgery seems likely, could miss 3 months

Kevin Kouzmanoff will likely require surgery to a herniated disk in his back according to ESPN.

Kouzmanoff has been filling in for the injured Adrian Beltre in the Rangers batting order and has paid dividends hitting .326 with two home runs and 10 RBI's since Beltre left the lineup. Kouzmanoff has been dealing with back issues for over a decade now, but it appears a surgery is imminent.

The recovery time for the proposed surgery is seven to 12 weeks.

McAllister getting start on three days rest

Zach McAllister will take to the mound for the Cleveland Indians on three days rest Wednesday. McAllister is being thrust into his first ever start on three days rest because the Indians moved Carlos Carrasco to the bullpen.

McAllister has been good to the Indians though, with Cleveland going 7-1 in his last eight starts including 4-1 on the road.

The Indians (+136) are road dogs as they take on the Angels (-148).

American League continues to plate runs, go over

The over bet had a huge day in the American League Tuesday with a 5-1 O/U record. In the six games of action there was 66 runs plated which averages out to 11 runs a game.

Tuesday was the second day in a row the AL showed offensive pop. In the past two days the AL has gone over in seven of their nine games, including hitting double-digit runs in five of those.

There are six AL games on the diamond Wednesday.

Noah reveals knee injury, refuses to use as excuse

While his six-point, 18-rebound, seven-assist, three-blocked shot stat line was typical of a Joakim Noah night, it was clear from the opening tip Tuesday evening that the All-Star center wasn’t quite himself in the Bulls’ Game 5, season-ending, 75-69 loss to the Wizards at the United Center.

Visibly hobbled while running the floor, Noah gutted out the contest and although it was teammate Taj Gibson that would have to leave the floor — with 7:51 remaining, Gibson suffered a gruesome left-ankle injury and unable to talk under his own power, had to receive assistance going to the locker room — the versatile offensive facilitator and defensive anchor would later acknowledge that he wasn’t at full strength, albeit reluctantly.

“There’s really no excuses right now. It’s been a long year and yeah, I’ve got things I’ve got to take care of,” Noah said. “My knee. My knee is bothering me. My left knee. I’m not sure what it is, but I was able to play today. I think I was limited a little bit. But it’s no excuses. I’ll check it out, find out what’s wrong and take care of it. And now, we’ve got a lot of time to take care of it.”

Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau revealed that Noah had been playing with the publicly undiagnosed ailment since the regular season.

Road dog paying out for bettors in Nets-Raptors series

It seems like nobody quite knows how to take the Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors series. Keen bettors have noticed a great betting trend going into Game 5 in Toronto Wednesday.

In the first four games in the Nets-Raps series the road team was the underdog and in those games the dog is 3-0-1 against the spread for bettors.

The Nets are currently +3.5 for Wednesday's crucial Game 5.

                            Wednesday's MLB betting cheat sheet
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            Road faves come through

It was a perfect Tuesday for the four major-league road favorites, though not without some nervous moments. Colorado (-105), Detroit (-137) and Washington (-138) all needed go-ahead runs in the ninth inning to win their respective games, while Oakland (-110) walloped Texas in the other.

                            Over and above

As stingy as Jose Fernandez has been at home, his games still find a way to go Over. Fernandez threw eight sensational innings in Miami's 9-0 rout of Atlanta, improving him to 12-0 with a 1.00 ERA in 19 starts at Marlins Park. Miami is 7-3 O/U in his last 10 starts there.

                            Gibson a run magnet

Over bettors should keep an eye on Wednesday's showdown between the Minnesota Twins and the visiting Los Angeles Angels (+130, 7.5). Twins starter Kyle Gibson has been one of the stronger Over plays, sporting an 8-2 O/U record over his previous 10 starts.

                            Pitching Notes

                            * Cincinnati Reds lefty Tony Cingrani is nothing if not consistent, having alternated moneyline wins and losses over his past 13 starts. Coming off a victory last time out, Cingrani and the Reds (-181) host the Chicago Cubs.

                            * Expect a low total when Shelby Miller and the St. Louis Cardinals (-142, 7) entertain Milwaukee. Miller is on a streak of four straight Under while the Brewers are 10-17-0 O/U for the season.

                            Hitting Notes

                            * Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera is heating up, going 11-for-26 with eight RBIs during a six-game hitting streak. Not coincidentally, Detroit is 4-1-1 O/U over that span.

                            * Home runs by Miami outfielder Giancarlo Stanton have become good omens for Over bettors. The Marlins are 7-0 O/U when Stanton goes deep, and just 7-10-2 O/U when he doesn't.

                            Total Streaks

Washington Nationals (1-3-1 O/U): The absence of talented outfielder Bryce Harper (thumb) is already being felt in the U.S. capital, with the Nationals reeling off three straight Unders while scoring a modest 10 runs over that span.

                            Prop of the Day

Think the Cubs are capable of putting up a big inning Wednesday? It'll pay handsomely if they do; Chicago is a +200 for putting up the highest-scoring inning against the Reds (+105). A tie is worth +275.

                            Injury Watch

The status of Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is unknown after he left Tuesday's game against the Angels with a right abdominal strain. It would be an enormous loss for the Indians, who have provided the second-worst value in the AL to date (-683 units).

                            Weather Watch

                            * Offense could be a challenge at Kauffman Stadium when the Kansas City Royals (-130, 7.5) host Toronto. Teams are batting a collective .240 in 17 games with the wind blowing from left to right field at more than 10 miles per hour.

                            * Cincinnati won't complain about Wednesday's wind conditions. The Reds average more than five runs per game with the wind blowing out to right field at better than 10 miles per hour.

                            Umpire Stat of the Day

Under is 7-0-2 in umpire Mark Wegner's last nine games behind home plate. Wegner will call the balls and strikes for the game between the Royals and the Blue Jays.

** Odds, stats, weather forecast and probable pitchers as of 9:55 a.m. ET Tuesday.

MacKinnon providing pop at Pepsi Center

Nathan MacKinnon has been a revelation for the Colorado Avalanche and it's become clear that the youngster loves playing in the Pepsi Center.

MacKinnon has 10-points (two goals, eight assists) during the playoffs, which happens to be the most of any player. What's astonishing about those 10-points is that MacKinnon has scored everyone of them when the Avs played at home. That means that MacKinnon has averaged over 3-points a game at the Pepsi Center in the playoffs.

Colorado are -132 home favs to top the Minnesota Wild (+122) and book their trip to Round 2 Wednesday.

Panthers GM high on Barry Trotz

The Florida Panthers announced Tuesday that they have fired interim head coach Peter Horachek. Horachek replaced head coach Kevin Dineen on Nov.8 and led the Panthers to a 26-34-6 record over the final 66 games of the season as Florida missed the postseason for the 12th time in 13 seasons.

Horachek’s dismissal means that the Panthers are now one of three NHL teams with a head coaching vacancy along with the Capitals and Nashville Predators.

Don’t be surprised to hear the names Peter Laviolette and Barry Trotz – two names that have been linked to the Capitals’ head coaching vacancy this week- bandied about as the Panthers look to hire a 13th head coach in the franchise’s 21-year history.

“Barry Trotz is one hell of a coach,” Tallon told reporters Tuesday in South Florida.

Trotz went 557-479-60-100 in 15 seasons with Nashville, and led the Predators to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in seven of eight years from 2004-2012. Trotz could be seen as an ideal fit for Florida given his prior success in a non-traditional hockey market with young teams built from the goal line out.
