    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- What does it say about state of coaching in NBA that rumors are flying that the Pacers will fire Frank Vogel if they don't beat the Hawks in this series?

-- Tracy McGrady made the Sugar Land Skeeters independent baseball team; they start their season tonight. Great story; McGrady scored more than 18,000 points in his excellent NBA career. He will be 35 next month.

-- Michael Pineda got tossed for having pine tar on his neck; can't anyone teach him how to cheat the right way?

-- Phil Jackson wants to can some people in the Knicks' front office, but the nitwit owner is resisting making those changes. This might not end well.

-- Mike Matheny became the last MLB manager to challenge a play when he lost a ninth inning challenge at Citi Field on a play at the plate.

-- Cubs marked 100th anniversary of Wrigley Field by blowing a 5-2 9th inning lead in a 7-5 loss to an awful Arizona team.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Initial thoughts on the NFL schedule

    13) Green Bay at Seattle is the Thursday night opener; there are only two 4:25 Sunday games in Week 1, but there is a Monday night doubleheader, Giants-Lions and Chargers-Cardinals.

    12) There is a Saturday doubleheader in Week 16, first one of those in a while; they have Eagles-Redskins, Chargers-49ers that day. Am little surprised that neither Eagle-Redskin game made it to primetime, with the DeSean Jackson drama.

    11) Four teams have three consecutive road games: Bengals-Rams-Broncos-Bucs.

    10) First of Denver's three straight road games in November 2 at New England.

    9) Dallas Cowboys have December dates at Chicago/Philly, cold weather games, not the best situation for a dome team.

    8) Week 3, Denver at Seattle, an early Super Bowl rematch.

    7) Thanksgiving tripleheader:
    Bears-Lions......Eagles-Cowboys......Seahawks-49ers

    6) One big change is that the league can flex the Sunday night games now, starting in Week 5, to give more attractive primetime matchups.

    5) Six teams are scheduled to play three Sunday nights each, though that could change; still don't get NBC's fascination with the Cowboys- they're not good, but now that they can flex out of games starting in Week 5, the schedule can change.

    4) Minnesota Vikings are on outdoor team for the next two years; six of their last eight games are either at home or in Chicago, so they're going to freeze in the second half of season- other two second half games are at Miami and in Detroit's dome.

    3) All Week 17 matchups are divisional games, all are on Sunday.

    2) We have all the Week 1 matchups just below this, but Colts-Broncos stands out as the best matchup; only three home underdogs in Week 1.

    1) Pointspreads from LVH for Week 1 of the NFL season.........
    Green Bay @ Seattle (-5)
    Oakland @ NJ Jets (-4.5)
    New Orleans @ Atlanta (-2)
    Minnesota @ St Louis (-5)
    Cleveland @ Pittsburgh (-5)
    Jacksonville @ Philadelphia (-11)
    Cincinnati @ Baltimore (-2.5)
    Buffalo @ Chicago (-6.5)
    Washington @ Houston (-2.5)
    Tennessee @ Kansas City (-5.5)
    New England (-3.5) @ Miami
    Carolina (-2.5) @ Tampa Bay
    San Francisco (-3.5) @ Dallas
    Indianapolis @ Denver (-7)
    NJ Giants @ Detroit (-4)
    San Diego @ Arizona (-3.5)

Six must-bet games on the new 2014 NFL schedule

The LVH sports book in Las Vegas will be releasing their full assortment of Week 1 sides and totals now that the 2014 NFL schedule has been revealed to the public. But why limit our initial inspection of this season’s slate of action to just 16 games played at the beginning of September?

Instead, here’s a look at six matchups we’ve very interested in betting into as soon as the lines hit the board.

San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks (Week 15, Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET)

No team boasts a greater edge in home- field advantage than the defending champs, who have gone 24-8 SU (.750) and 22-10 ATS (.687) at CenturyLink Field during the regular season since the arrival of head coach Pete Carroll in 2010.

In addition, Carroll is 3-1 both SU and ATS on home turf against archrival Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers, who have failed to top 19 points in a game in each of their last four visits to the Pacific Northwest - outscored 111-52 during that span.

        Projected point spread:
        Seattle -4.5

Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles (Week 3, Sunday, 1 p.m. ET)

With the Cowboys languishing as an 8-8 unit in each of the last three years and the Giants coming off a disappointing 7-9 campaign, Philadelphia-Washington has the potential to become the NFC East’s most explosive rivalry. The Birds won and covered in both showdowns with the Skins last season and hit the board at the LVH sportsbook as a 25/1 shot to win the Super Bowl back in January.

But while the hype will surround Chip Kelly and the boys from South Philly, beware of this new-look Washington squad coached by Jay Gruden, that will feature a 100 percent healthy Robert Griffin III under center - not to mention Pro Bowl wide receiver and Philadelphia castoff DeSean Jackson, who comes complete with a copy of the Eagles’ playbook.

        Projected point spread:
        Philadelphia -5

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots (Week 9, Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET)

The 15th career meeting between future Hall of Fame quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will see both signal callers take the field at an age of 37 or older, so who knows how many more of these legendary showdowns we have left.

Brady holds a 10-5 SU and 8-6-1 ATS lifetime edge against Manning, but the last five encounters have seen the Denver quarterback post a 3-2 SU mark against his counterpart while going just 2-3 ATS. This is a revenge spot for Brady and the Pats, who fell 26-16 at Denver during last January’s AFC Championship game. Be advised that over the last five years, Brady has been a home dog just once. That instance? Last season’s Week 12 come-from-behind win over Manning and the Broncos.

        Projected point spread:
        Denver -1

New Orleans Saints at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Week 17, Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET)

Since 2011, the Saints have gone an ultra-impressive 21-4 SU and 20-4-1 ATS when playing within the comfortable confines of the Superdome. But during that stretch, this same team has posted a lackluster 8-12 SU and ATS mark in outdoor road games, highlighted by a 3-5 SU and ATS record in those situations last season.

This issue has been on full display in New Orleans’ last three trips to Tampa Bay to face a terrible Buccaneers team, who has gone 2-1 both SU and ATS against the Saints over the last three years despite being a home dog in each instance. New head coach Lovie Smith is going to turn this bumbling Buccaneers franchise around in a hurry, which is why Tampa Bay plus the points is a divisional showdown we’ll be monitoring closely.

Projected point spread: New Orleans -2.5

Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers (Week 10, Sunday, 8:30 p.m. ET)

Eliminate last year’s Week 9 Chicago-Green Bay tilt, that saw Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers exit the game with a shoulder injury after throwing just two passes, and you have a Green Bay team that has won and covered in six straight meetings against their rivals from Illinois.

In 13 career appearances against Chicago, Rodgers is 10-3 SU and ATS with a completion percentage of 67.5 percent, 21 touchdown tosses and a passer rating of 97.4. On the other side of the field stands Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who is 1-8 SU for his career against the Packers, with a completion percentage of just 55.9 percent, 11 touchdowns, 17 interceptions and a passer rating of 65.1.

        Projected point spread:
        Green Bay -7

Buffalo Bills at Oakland Raiders (Week 16, Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET)

This game has about as much sex appeal as a cockroach infestation and would likely be deemed unwatchable if it weren’t for both gambling and fantasy football. But since we’re talking about wagering, this matchup is worth mentioning because you have to go back to the year 2004 to find the last time the Buffalo Bills covered a spread on the West Coast.

That’s right. Since 2005, the Bills are 0-4 both SU and ATS when playing on the left coast. In addition, Buffalo hasn’t covered the spread against Oakland since these two teams met back in 2004, with the Raiders going 3-0 ATS versus the Bills in the three meetings between these two franchises since.

        Projected point spread:
        Oakland -3

Game of the Day: Thunder at Grizzlies
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Memphis Grizzlies (+2, 190)

The Memphis Grizzlies swiped homecourt advantage away from Oklahoma City and attempt to take a 2-1 series lead when they host the Thunder on Wednesday in the seven-game Western Conference first-round series. The seventh-seeded Grizzlies recorded a 111-105 overtime victory in Game 2 to avoid a hole and are in a good position with the next two games being at home. Kevin Durant is averaging 34.5 points in the series for second-seeded Oklahoma City.

Durant kept the Thunder alive with a late four-point play in regulation in Game 2 as Oklahoma City eventually forced overtime before Zach Randolph scored eight of his 25 points in the extra session to help the Grizzlies prevail. Durant scored 36 points but it took him 28 field-goal attempts (making 12 shots) to get there as he was hounded throughout by Memphis defensive stalwart Tony Allen. “It is typical defense,” Durant told reporters. “They’ve been playing it all season. We got to move the ball a little bit better.” The Grizzlies scored 25 more points in Game 2 than they did in the opener.

          TV:
8 p.m. ET, TNT, FSN Oklahoma (Oklahoma City), SportSouth (Memphis)

          LINE HISTORY:
The Grizzlies opened as 1-point home dogs and that has been bet to +2. The total opened 190 and has held firm since.

          INJURY REPORT:
Grizzlies - G Nick Calathes (Out, suspended), F Quincy Pondexter (Out, foot)

          WHY BET THE THUNDER:
Oklahoma City was eliminated from last season’s playoffs by the Grizzlies and the players are very aware that they lost in both visits to Memphis. The Thunder averaged just 89 points in the two losses – played without Russell Westbrook – and know they can’t afford to lose both games this time around. “As we go out on the road, it’s a great opportunity to develop the type of composure, poise, concentration and focus that you have to have in the playoffs,” veteran guard Derek Fisher told reporters. Fisher is one of the players who needs to step up his game as he has yet to make a 3-pointer while averaging 5.5 points in the series.

          WHY BET THE GRIZZLIES:
Allen has averaged 34 minutes in the first two games with small forward Tayshaun Prince dealing with an illness and his defensive prowess being needed. When guarding Durant, he has been relentless with applying pressure and trying to keep the ball from getting into the hands of the Oklahoma City superstar. Allen doesn’t understand the big deal his suffocating defense received in the aftermath of Game 2. “That was just blue collar,” Allen told reporters. “I’m no star, I’m blue collar.” Allen is averaging 10.5, seven rebounds and 2.5 steals in the series.

          TRENDS:

          * Favorite is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
          * Grizzlies are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Conference Quarterfinals games.
          * Thunder are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
          * Over is 4-1 in Grizzlies last five Conference Quarterfinals games.

          CONSENSUS:
67 percent of wagers are on the Thunder -2. 58 percent of wagers are on Over 190.

                      Ducks' Ryan Getzlaf, questionable Friday

Getzlaf did not play in Wednesday's Game 4 against the Stars due to an upper-body injury. He has returned home to get treatment and is questionable for Game 5 on Friday.

Blues' C David Backes, questionable Friday

Over bets cash in on ice yet again

The Over went 3-0 in the NHL's three playoff games Wednesday evening. The 3-0 Over/Under night now puts the playoff tally for totals to 17-6-5 O/U - good enough for a 73.9 percent success rate on Over bets.

There are three games on the board Thursday and all currently have totals of 5.

Two-goal lead not safe in Pens-Jackets series

With the series tied 2-2, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets have proved one thing is for certain in the NHL: The two-goal lead is the hardest lead in hockey to defend.

The Penguins were up 3-1 in Game 4 Wednesday and promptly blew the lead as they watched Nick Foligno pot the winner in overtime to give the Jackets the 4-3 win.

In all four games, the losing team has had a 3-1 lead and watched it disappear as they team down two goals has battled back to win 4-3.

Game 5 of the series is scheduled for Saturday night in Pittsburgh.

                      Wild's Cooke draws seven-game suspension

Minnesota Wild forward Matt Cooke was suspended for seven games by the NHL on Wednesday for kneeing Colorado Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie during Game 3 of a first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.

The suspension was announced by the Department of Player Safety after a meeting with Cook and new league disciplinarian Stephane Quintal in New York. It would extend into the 2014-15 regular season if the Wild are eliminated from the postseason before Cooke serves the three games.

The 35-year-old Cooke received a minor penalty for the knee-on-knee hit on a play at 2:02 of the second period of Tuesday night's game. Barrie is expected to be out for four to six weeks as a result of the collision.

The suspension was Cooke's fifth during his career but the first in three years. The last time was during the 2011 playoffs when he was suspended for 10 games after elbowing New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh in the head.

Nationals' Gonzalez leaves game with shoulder tightness

Washington Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez was pulled in the sixth inning of Wednesday night's 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels due to what is being described as tightness in his left shoulder.

Nationals' manager Matt Williams described the move as precautionary and Gonzalez in expected to make his next start.

Dice-K may be option for closer

Daisuke Matsuzaka isn’t necessarily next in line for a shot at closing games if Kyle Farnsworth bombs, but the Mets may consider the veteran right-hander for the role if there is a need. Manager Terry Collins on Wednesday cited Matsuzaka’s improved control from when the Mets first signed him last season as a reason Matsuzaka could handle the job.

Yankees' Pineda ejected because of foreign substance

Michael Pineda got away with it the first time.

He should have quit while he was ahead.

The New York Yankees right-hander, who used a substance believed to be pine tar on his right hand when he faced the Boston Red Sox in New York on April 10, was ejected in the second inning of Wednesday night's start against the same team with pine tar on his neck.

"Yes, it was pine tar," Pineda said after that game, adding, "It won't happen again."

NFL line watch: Best Week 1 odds to bet now or later

The NFL Week 1 odds are fresh out of the oven with the league releasing the 2014 schedule Wednesday night. Covers Expert Art Aronson is sizing up those opening numbers and tells you which odds are best to bet now – in April – and which ones you might want to wait until September to take.

Week 1 spread to wait on

Jacksonville Jaguars at Philadelphia Eagles (-11)

There is talk that Jacksonville may at long last be ready to take a step forward after six straight seasons without a winning record and just six victories in its last 32 games. Jacksonville was actually halfway decent (3-5) on the road last season, although none of the wins (Cleveland, Houston, Tennessee) were eye openers.

Talk that the Jags would bite on one of the name QBs (Manziel, Bridgewater, Bortles) has cooled, so at this point no one is certain what the offense will look like on opening day. Best to wait on this one before wolfing down the points on the only double-digit line on the board for Week 1. Too many variables right now.

Week 1 spread to bet now

Green Bay Packers at Seattle Seahawks (Seattle -5)

Would you be willing to lay the five points if the Seahawks were opening at home against the Jets? Dolphins? Rams? Because the Packers weren’t much better, if any better at all, than those teams last season.

Green Bay snuck into the playoffs only because the Bears were leaking oil after Thanksgiving, and the Packers actually gave up more points than they scored last season. Even if they emphasize defense in the draft, it’s hard to see a big enough improvement by Week 1 to enable them to hang with the Seahawks on Opening Day. Give the five before it grows to 7.5.

                              Week 1 total to watch

New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins (47)

You can bet that Vince Wilfork is not looking forward to playing 35 to 40 downs in the summer Florida heat in this one. Both teams will be testing out revamped defenses, with the Patriots’ new toy (Darrelle Revis) hoping to lock down whatever Dolphins wideout Bill Belichick wants to target.

Run-stuffer Brandon Spikes shot his way out of Foxboro and Brandon Browner will be sitting out this one on a drug suspension, so the New England defense won’t be the one Miami will see when the teams play three months later. This one has 34-21 written all over it. Grab the number before it rises.
