    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Five kids have transferred from South Florida, one of whom was Stan Heath's son; USF will be a team to watch going forward.

    -- Diamondbacks are 5-18 and sinking like a rock. A $100M rock.

-- Odd stat from Wall Street Journal; 24% of women in Italy aged 49+ haven't had a child; thats the highest percentage of any country in Europe.

-- There were tickets for Hawk-Pacer game last night selling for less than $10.

-- Oakland A's have some good relief pitchers, but no closer; thats a problem.

-- NFL pushed back its schedule release to tonight, so we'll be on top of that in this space tomorrow.

    *****

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) Albert Pujols hit two HRs Tuesday, becoming 26th big leaguer with 500 career homers, as thew Angels won 7-2 at Washington; Pujols has 19 RBI in 20 games, as reports of his demise were greatly exaggerated.

    12) When Pujols broke into pro ball with Peoria of Midwest League in 2000, the starting pitcher on the other team in his first game was the Dodgers' Josh Beckett.

    11) Dodgers lost 3-2 in 12 innings to Philly, when Domonic Brown doubled to left-center scoring Carlos Ruiz, who reached on a dropped fly ball by $21M a year Carl Crawford, who is hitting .217. Maybe the worst baseball contract ever.

    10) Dodgers have made 23 errors in 21 games; maybe the next manager (Dusty Baker??) will have better luck tightening them up on defense.

    9) Ike Davis is the first major leaguer ever to hit grand slams for two different teams in the same season; not only that, but both were obviously in April, and both came against Cincinnati. Doing it in April may never be done again.

    8) Speaking of the Pirates, how does Travis Snider get suspended for only two games? Maldonado doesn't slug anyone if Snider doesn't come off the bench first (their dugout is on 3rd base side), but he gets five games because he landed the better punch? Think about it: there are nine Pirates on the field with Gomez; Maldonado rushed on the field to even the sides a little bit. Punishment should've been equal.

    7) Proof I watch too much TV: are we really supposed to believe Jessica Simpson goes to Weight Watchers meetings with a bunch of housewives in Orange County, or wherever she lives? Wonder how much cash WW wasted on her as a spokesman?

    6) Something you don't see every day; no walks, 28 strikeouts in the Marlins' 1-0 win at Atlanta. Fernandez-Wood were pitchers, Doug Eddings the umpire. It isn't surprising that all four Eddings games this year have gone under the total.

    5) A 10-year old kid in Ohio was suspended from school for pointing his finger at another kid and pretending to shoot him. You can't make this stuff up.

    4) I wouldn't want to be the guy answering to Seattle Mariners' ownership these days; they somehow hired Lloyd McLendon as manager- guy was 336-446 as the Pirates' manager, then sat near Jim Leyland in Detroit for a few years- they had to come up someone better, with all the money they spent on players last winter. By the way, Seattle is 7-13 and lost its last eight games, last five to Miami/Houston.

    3) Bulls lost in OT to Washington; has an NBA team ever played an OT playoff game before and had two subs take the most shots on the team? Ever?

    2) A 15-year old kid survived a plane ride from California to Hawai'i after he stowed away in one of the plane's wheel wells- apparently the boy wanted to see his mother, who is in Somalia. That plane flew as high as 38,000 feet; kid defied the odds by surviving the flight. Someday he'll make a bundle on the movie rights.

    1) NFL schedule comes out tonight, then the people on ESPN's daily NFL show will actually have concrete things to talk about. Too much speculation, with all the draft stuff going on-- none of it means anything until May 8.

Wednesday's NBA playoffs betting news and notes
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlotte Bobcats vs. Miami Heat (-10.5, 186)

Al Jefferson suffered a plantar fasciitis injury to his left foot in the opening game of the series and plans on being cleared to play. “I’m suiting up,” Jefferson told reporters. “It will take more than that to make me sit down.” Charlotte needs a healthy and productive Jefferson to be competitive in the series and coach Steve Clifford will be watching the big man closely in Wednesday’s mid-day shootaround. Kemba Walker was just 6-of-15 shooting and committed six turnovers in Game 1 and pointed at himself as somebody who needs to step up due to Jefferson’s situation.

Miami posted a 99-88 victory in the series opener as forward LeBron James scored 27 points and guard Dwyane Wade added 23. Miami received a surprise Game 1 contribution from backup small forward James Jones, who scored 12 points in 14 minutes. Jones played just 18 total minutes over a 3 1/2-month portion of the season until receiving some playing time opportunities in late March and even he was surprised when coach Erik Spoelstra inserted him midway through the second quarter. The Heat went 11-of-23 from 3-point range in the opener, led by four from James.

      TRENDS:

      * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
      * Favorite is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
      * Bobcats are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings in Miami.

Dallas Mavericks vs. San Antonio Spurs (-8, 198)

Although it fizzled down the stretch of Game 1 in spectacular fashion, Dallas has tried to take some solace in the fact that the game was there for the taking after so many one-sided games between the teams of late. Vince Carter was one of three Mavericks reserves to score in double figures (guard Devin Harris had a team-high 19 points) in the opener, as the Dallas bench outscored its starters 46-39. Dallas' leading scorer Dirk Nowitzki was limited to 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting.

The manner in which the Mavericks' second unit dominated was notable, as San Antonio boasts a normally solid supporting cast that was limited to 23 points on 7-of-26 shooting. Nine Spurs averaged at least 8.2 points during the regular season but only seven managed to even get into the scoring column in Game 1, with usual contributor Marco Belinelli - who averaged 11.4 points this season - missing all four of his shots and going scoreless in 12 minutes. San Antonio had a 48-40 edge on the glass and a 56-32 advantage in points in the paint.

      TRENDS:

      * Under is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings in San Antonio.
      * Mavericks are 4-12 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
      * Road team is 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.

Portland Trail Blazers vs. Houston Rockets (-6, 214.5)

LaMarcus Aldridge put on the best performance in Portland’s playoff history with a franchise-record 46 points to go with 18 rebounds as the Trail Blazers recorded a 122-120 overtime win in the opener. While Aldridge and point guard Damian Lillard (31 points) were having customary big games, shooting guard Wesley Matthews was the unsung standout. Matthews had 18 points and three steals and was the primary defender on Harden for most of the contest. Portland received just seven points on 2-of-14 shooting from its bench in Game 1.

Houston hopes for a better shooting performance from guard James Harden, who was just 8-of-28 from the field while scoring 27 points in the opener. Point guard Patrick Beverley has been cleared to play after once again injuring his troublesome right knee in the opener. An MRI exam displayed no new damage but the knee remains a concern as Beverley tore the meniscus in late March and rest was the route taken as opposed to season-ending surgery. The feisty Beverley plays with a relentless in-your-face style and insists the knee isn’t an issue moving forward.

      TRENDS:

      * Over is 8-0 in the last eight meetings.
      * Road team is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
      * Underdog is 12-5-1 ATS in the last 18 meetings.

Wednesday's NHL playoffs betting news and notes
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (+118, 5.5)

A high-octane offense has pretty much been the norm in the Steel City, although some familiar names have yet to score a goal in the series. Captain Sidney Crosby (team-leading 36 goals), Chris Kunitz (35) and Evgeni Malkin (23) have combined for eight assists, while James Neal (27 goals) has been held off the scoresheet in all three tilts. "Obviously, Sid and Geno (Malkin) and Kuni and James Neal are going to get a lot of the attention, a lot of the tougher matchups," Stempniak said. "It sort of comes down to the secondary scoring and the other players who can make a difference in the series."

Coach Todd Richards admitted that he saw the parallels between Games 1 and 3, from the frenzied atmosphere surrounding the series opener to Columbus' crowd desiring to celebrate its first postseason victory. Richards acknowledged that the Blue Jackets "got away from our game a little bit. Some of that had to do with what Pittsburgh was doing, but some of it had to do with what we were doing, too." Columbus would be wise to crack down on its penalties, as the Penguins have totaled a league-best 17 power-play opportunities.

        TRENDS:

        * Penguins are 6-0 in the last six meetings in Columbus.
        * Penguins are 8-1 in the last nine meetings.
        * Over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in Columbus.

Anaheim Ducks vs. Dallas Stars (-116, 5.5)

The Ducks lost more than a game Monday as Stephane Robidas suffered a fractured right leg in the opening minute of the second period and is out for the remainder of the postseason. It is the same leg the defenseman broke in November while a member of the Stars. With Robidas on the shelf, Anaheim will turn to either Luca Sbisa or Mark Fistric to fill the void in Game 4. Both have battled injuries this season as Sbisa was limited to 30 games during the regular season while Fistric hasn't played since March 15. The Ducks have gone 0-for-8 on the power play over the last two games after scoring twice on five opportunities in the series opener.

Captain Jamie Benn and Ryan Garbutt each scored his second goal of the series while Kari Lehtonen made 37 saves en route to his first win in five career playoff decisions. Brenden Dillon participated in an optional skate with his teammates Tuesday for the first time since suffering a lower-body injury on the final weekend of the season. Coach Lindy Ruff considers the defenseman "a long shot" to play on Wednesday, however. "Unless he walks in my office and demands it, which I could hope could happen, but I'm not banking on it," Ruff said.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Dallas.
        * Home team is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
        * Ducks are 16-36-2 in the last 54 meetings in Dallas.

St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks (-145, 5)

Check back later for more info.

        TRENDS:

        * Home team is 38-18 in the last 56 meetings.
        * Blues are 7-21 in the last 28 meetings in Chicago.
        * Under is 8-2 in Blackhawks' last 10 games following a win.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB teams with the biggest betting home/away split
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For a handful of major-league teams, game location has played a significant role in their early-season fortunes. Some clubs are off to incredible starts at home but have struggled to maintain that momentum on the road. Others have succeeded away from their own stadium but have disappointed the locals.

Here are five teams with the largest home/road splits (units in parentheses):

Milwaukee Brewers (+32 at home, +978 on road)

Bet you didn't see this coming. The Brewers have been the major leagues' road warriors, becoming the first team to win nine of its first 10 games away from home since the 1994 Atlanta Braves. The offensive numbers - Milwaukee is batting .306 with a league-best 60 runs and 15 homers in 10 road games - are too good to sustain, and Milwaukee's next seven road games are against division power St. Louis and formidable Cincinnati.

Miami Marlins (+481 at home, -631 on road)

The Marlins are doing exactly what's expected of most major league teams, triumphing in their own stadium while scuffling on the road. Miami's splits are more pronounced than the others, with a 9-4 record at Marlins Park and an 0-6 mark everywhere else. Apparently Miami's pitching staff enjoys the comforts of home, posting a 2.54 ERA in 117 innings in Miami, good for fifth-best in the league, but a 6.16 ERA outside Florida which ranks second-worst.

Los Angeles Dodgers (-142 at home, +500 on road)

Fans supporting the team with the highest payroll in the majors probably wouldn't mind seeing more victories in their home park. Los Angeles has scuffled to a 4-4 home record but has thrived away from Dodger Stadium, posting an 8-3 mark with a 2.35 ERA that ranks second in the majors. The Dodgers have a great chance to pad their home record this week, welcoming the Philadelphia Phillies for four games before facing Colorado in a three-game set.

New York Mets (-290 at home, +479 at home)

New York has brought great woe to Citi Field so far in 2014, winning just three of its first nine games there while posting a 6-3 mark on the road. The home struggles can be explained, at least in part, by an opening schedule that includes series against Washington, Philadelphia and Atlanta. Add in the fact that the Mets caught the host Arizona Diamondbacks in the throes of a terrible slump, and the early-season wins disparity makes even more sense.

Detroit Tigers (+304 at home, -173 on road)

The defending Central Division champions racked up 51 home wins last season and are well on their way to repeating the feat, winning seven of their first 10 games at Comerica Park. That hot home start has masked a sub-par road showing, with the Tigers going 2-3 - a stretch that includes two one-sided losses to lowly San Diego. Detroit has eight straight games against divisional opponents beginning Friday. It went 47-29 against the AL Central last year.

Game of the Day: Phillies vs. Dodgers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (-170)

Cole Hamels makes his season debut Wednesday when the visiting Philadelphia Phillies aim for their fourth straight win against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are struggling offensively after a strong start. The Phillies moved to 10-10 overall with Tuesday’s 3-2 win in 10 innings and are hoping Hamels can provide a much-needed boost to the team’s starting rotation. Hamels, who landed on the disabled list with left biceps tendinitis, pitched at least six innings in 28 of his 33 starts last season.

The Dodgers received a scare when second baseman Dee Gordon left Tuesday's game after hitting his head on Jayson Nix’s knee on a steal of third base, but he passed a concussion test and could be available Wednesday. Shortstop Hanley Ramirez is 2-for-20 since being hit on the left hand by a pitch from the Giants’ Ryan Vogelsong, but manager Don Mattingly doesn’t appear concerned. “He’s not swinging the bat like a guy whose hand is hurting,” Mattingly told reporters. “He’s just a touch off.”

                        POWER RANKINGS:
                        Phillies (-111), Dodgers (-190)

                        INJURY REPORT:
SP Cole Hammels - probable Wednesday (arm).

                        PITCHING MATCHUP:
Phillies LH Cole Hamels (2013: 8-14, 3.60 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (3-0, 2.42)

Hamels pronounced himself ready after going 0-1 with a 2.12 ERA in three rehab starts covering 17 innings with Class A Advanced Clearwater. “I was able to go down there and get everything accomplished, my strength, building up pitch count and really try to execute pitches to both side of the plate,” Hamels told mlb.com. Adrian Gonzalez is 8-for-27 with two homers against the 30-year-old, who is 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA in four career starts at Dodger Stadium.

Greinke has been a model of consistency over his first four starts, and he’s gone 10-1 with a 1.71 ERA in his last 15 starts since Aug. 5, 2013. The 30-year-old recorded eight strikeouts for the third straight start against Arizona on Friday, when he allowed one run on three hits over six innings. Marlon Byrd is 3-for-20 with seven strikeouts against Greinke, who is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in four career starts against the Phillies.

Blues' C David Backes, questionable Wednesday

Backes was on the receiving end of an illegal hit to the head on Sunday and did not play against the Blackhawks in Game 3. He is questionable to return for Game 4 on Wednesday.

Penguins-Jackets cashing in for Over bettors

There is no doubt that the Columbus Blue Jackets have put up a good fight in their playoff series with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but bettors have probably focused in on totals.

Three games into the series and the Over/Under count is 3-0 as each game has resulted in a 4-3 scoreline. One contributing factor is certainly the amount of shots being pelted toward the net. Through three games, the two teams are combining to average 71.33 shots per game.

                          The O/U for Wednesday's Game 4 is 5.5 (-117).

Something about the Houston Rockets and Portland Trail Blazers getting together has the scoreboard operator working overtime.

When the two teams put up a combined 242 points in Game 1 of their Western Conference Playoff series, they soared past the closing total of 215.5. That extended their run of Overs to eight-straight meetings dating back to February 2013.

Oddsmakers opened the total for Game 2 at 213.5, but that has since moved up a full point to 214.5.

Hamels to get first start against swinging Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies are finally getting ace Cole Hamels in their rotation Wednesday. Hamels, who started the season on the disabled list, will get his first start against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers are fairly average in every major batting statistics, except one. The Dodgers currently have the most strikeouts in the major's this season with 187 in 687 plate appearances in their first 20 games. That means that a little more than 27 percent of the Dodgers plate appearances are SO.
