    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Memphis 111, Oklahoma City 105 ot-- Knicks' castoff Beno Udrih scored 14 points in 14:00 off the bench for the Grizzlies.

-- Clippers 138, Warriors 98-- I'm sure Golden State's micro-managing owner just loved this game-- Clippers were up 26 at the half.

-- Evan Gattis hit a walkoff tater in 10th inning, Braves beat Miami 4-2. Marlins are now 0-7 on the road.

-- White Sox' Chris Sale (arm) becomes latest star pitcher to go on the DL.

-- Bob Uecker is actually getting a second statue at Miller Park; this one will be in the last row of the upper deck. Uecker is one of my heroes, for sure.

-- NFL pushed back its schedule release to Wednesday, so we'll be on top of that in this space on Thursday.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) Tennessee acted quickly after getting turned down by Louisiana Tech's Michael White; they hired Donnie Tyndall of Southern Miss as its new hoop coach.

    12) White played for Ole Miss; he is highly connected. His dad is AD at Duke; one brother is AD at Buffalo, another is associate AD at Louisiana Tech, so he would've been leaving his brother behind for a job that Cuonzo Martin couldn't wait to get away from. Not great to be hoop coach at a football school.

    11) Speaking of tough jobs, Butler has had four basketball players transfer since February, the latest being Cavalier coach Mike Brown's son. They seriously may regret thinking they were bigger than they are, jumping to the Big East, and likewise, the Big East may regret inviting them into the league.

    10) Coaching in the NBA has got to be like working in an insane asylum; Knicks fired Mike Woodson a year after he went 54-28- he was 37-45 this year. You knew Phil Jackson is going to bring in his own guy to coach; this was a formality, buit the concpet of job security doesn't exist in the NBA.

Last year, George Karl, Vinny Del Negro and Lionel Hollins all won 56+ games, and all three got fired. Not only that, none of the three have gotten another job.

    9) Someone on talk radio in NYC Monday wanted Knicks to hire Patrick Ewing as its next coach; if Ewing was serious about being a head coach, he wouldn't have turned down the chance to coach in the D-League, which he did.

    8) Duke actually poached a player from Rice; this is classic. Sean Obi, 6-9, 265 he made only 53% of his foul shots for the Owls, but has three years left to play in college. Coach K is an educator, thats all the TV people preach, but he poached Seth Curry from Liberty, the Hood kid from Mississippi State and now someone from freakin' Rice. Thats what happens when all your own recruits bolt to the NBA.

    7) Prince Fielder has already been walked intentionally nine times this year, but a more amazing stat is this: Mets' SS Ruben Tejada, a complete stiff, has been intentionally passed four times, because he bats ahead of the pitcher. Tejada has a lifetime average of .257, is hitting .204 this year. Oy.

    6) Why do the Mets play so much better on the road than at home?

    5) Houston Texans' owner Bob McNair went to college at South Carolina, which is obviously where Jadeveon Clowney went; think that factors in to the Texans' decision at all? I have no idea, but I'd hope it does not. .

    4) For whatever reason, Seattle Seahawks took Terrelle Pryor off the Raiders' hands, and actually gave them a 7th-round pick for him. Why?

    3) Like I said up above, NFL schedule is coming out Wednesday, whcih is good, because I am tired of reading about the draft; pushing it back until May seems like a bad idea. Too many workouts, too much speculation, not enough real news.

    2) Odd stat: New York Rangers have lost Game 2 in their last seven playoff series, and five of those seven were at home.

    1) I can't imagine running 26 miles; actually don't think its that healthy to do it, but kudos to the marathon runners Monday-- takes lot of mental toughness to train that hard. If I drive 26 miles, I'm looking for some Cherry Coke and Doritos, that or a drive-thru window, but thats just me.

      NBA
      Armadillo's Write-Up

      Tuesday, April 22

Toronto has won one playoff series in its history (2001); they're 1-4 overall in first round series-- this is Raptors' first playoff appearance since '08, and it showed in Game 1, with GM cursing out borough of Brooklyn before game, then DeRozan shooting 3-13, with Toronto -9 in turnovers (17-8). Stretched-out nature of playoff series helps the older Nets, whose starters were combined +69 in Game 1, even though they shot just 4-24 from arc. This is much more important game for Raptors..

Pacers are now 6-10 in last 16 games, 6-25-1 against spread in last 32, as they look like a dead team, despite #1 seed- they're now 2-3 vs Atlanta this season. Hawks won seven of its last nine games; they broke open Game 1's 52-all halftime tie with 30-16 third quarter- it was their first road playoff win in last nine tries. Atlanta had 8-0/14-0 runs in second half. Hibbert had 8 points, 5 fouls, zero blocked shots; not good.- Game 1 was just 7th loss in 42 home games for Indiana this season.

Washington outscored Bulls 30-18 in 4th quarter to win Game 1, after being down six at half; Nene had 24 points, 8 boards, while Hinrich was 7-16 for Bulls-- is it good if he takes most shots for Chicago? Wiz have won three of four vs Bulls this season- they're 27-15 vs spread on road, won three of last five games in this building. 13 of last 17 series games stayed under total. Seven of first ten playoff games this week went over total; favorites (all home teams) are 3-7 against the spread.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's NBA playoffs betting news and notes
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks vs. Indiana Pacers (-7, 186.5)

Teague scored a career playoff-high 28 points in Game 1 and was one of six players to knock down at least one 3-pointers for Atlanta. “I just wanted to be aggressive,” Teague told reporters. “We know they’re a good defensive team with a lot of length. We just wanted to attack, stay aggressive and hit the open guy. We’ve got a lot of shot makers. We know they are a long team who likes to clog the paint, but we want to stretch the floor against them.” Frontcourt mates Paul Millsap and Pero Antic combined to go 4-for-9 from beyond the arc, pulling Hibbert and David West out of the paint and opening driving lanes for Teague.

Indiana fought all season to earn the top seed and homecourt advantage in the Eastern Conference but has already surrendered homecourt advantage in the series. The Pacers struggled to adjust to Atlanta’s “spread-5” offensive attack, and coach Frank Vogel is contemplating changes to his rotation in order to adjust. “Probably just stick with what we have, but in the playoffs you have to contemplate everything,” Vogel told reporters. “You got a difficult matchup, obviously with a unique offensive attack, so you consider everything.” Evan Turner collected nine points and seven rebounds off the bench in Game 1 and could see more time if Indiana goes to a smaller lineup.

      TRENDS:

      * Road team is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings.
      * Over is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings.
      * Hawks are 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Toronto Raptors (-4.5, 188)

Brooklyn ranked as one of the better 3-point shooting teams in the Eastern Conference this season but struggled mightily in Game 1. After making three of their first four attempts from beyond the arc, the Nets missed 19 in a row before Pierce hit a big one with less than three minutes remaining. The Brooklyn bench combined to miss all 12 of its long-range tries and Johnson - the team leader in makes, attempts and percentage during the regular season - got off only one attempt and missed it.

The Game 1 performance was sloppy all-around in Toronto, where a clock malfunction forced officials to utilize stopwatches as the Raptors committed 19 turnovers. They stayed in the game by gaining a 45-37 advantage on the glass - including 18 rebounds by center Jonas Valanciunas - and converting 23-of-25 free throws. Greivis Vasquez looked like the team's best player behind Lowry, coming off the bench to produce 18 points and eight rebounds in 29 minutes.

      TRENDS:

      * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Toronto.
      * Home team is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
      * Underdog is 5-2-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.

Washington Wizards vs. Chicago Bulls (-5, 181.5)

The big games from Marcin Gortat and Nene helped make up for John Wall and Bradley Beal combining to go 7-for-25 from the field, though the two guards each hit a pair of free throws in the final 25 seconds to help put it away. “I know I can play better offensively, but to get a win like this and have my teammates step up when I didn’t have a good game is big for us,” Wall told the Washington Post. “We don’t have a lot of experience as young guys, me and (Beal), but we have great leaders.” One of those leaders is veteran guard Andre Miller, who scored eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter in Game 1.

Chicago squandered a 13-point third-quarter lead in Game 1 and missed nine of its last 11 field-goal attempts as Washington took control down the stretch. “We have to pick up our intensity,” center Joakim Noah told reporters. “Up 13, we exhaled, they came back. Bad turnovers, they got some easy scores. We got to make our adjustments. This is chess. It isn’t checkers.” Noah, who was named the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year on Monday, recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds in Game 1.

      TRENDS:

      * Wizards are 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings in Chicago.
      * Wizards are 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings.
      * Under is 21-6 in th elast 27 meetings.

        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Tuesday, April 22

Flyers' 4-2 win in Game 2 was their first in six games vs Rangers this year; they've lost five of last seven home games to Rangers, but haven't trailed either game in this series after 2nd period, despite being outshot a combined 49-31 in first two periods of each game. Rangers are 3-12 on power play in series, Philly just 2-4. Rangers led 2-0 after 8:22 of Game 2; them losing that game give Flyers huge boost heading to home ice here. Under is 5-1-2 in last eight Ranger games, 0-8-1 in Philly's last nine games.

Bruins evened series with Game 2 win that saw more faceoffs (44 to 62), penalty minutes (6 to 28) than in Game 1, but still less than typical game. Boston lost four of last six games vs Detroit; this is only their 4th visit to Motor City in last eight seasons- their last win here in Detroit was in '06-'07. Bruins are 26-15 on road this season; they've only allowed two goals in series so far, killing off all six penalties. Detroit is 23-18 at home this season; 10 of its 41 home games went to either OT or shootout.

Montreal is going for series sweep here, despite going 0-11 on power play and being -12 on faceoffs in series; they held Lightning to three goals in last two games, with two of those three scoring with Lightning up a man. Montreal won ten of last thirteen games overall; they won six of last eight at home, are 27-15 at home this season. Tampa Bay allowed five third period goals in series so far- they've won four of last seven road games, are 23-19 overall on road this season, but need big effort here to avoid Wednesday morning tee time.

Kings lost six of last seven games, scoring total of 16 goals- they led 2-0 after first period of Game 2, but Sharks then scored last seven goals of game to take 2-0 series lead, with 13 goals scored in two one-sided games. Sharks are 23-18 on road this season, but they were 0-2 here and have lost seven in row overall at Staples Center. League-wide, over is 10-5-2 in playoff games so far this week; three of four road teams got shut out last night. LA is 25-16 on home ice this season, with under 23-13-5 in those games.

Monday's NHL playoffs betting news and notes
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Montreal Canadiens (-175, 5)

Captain Steven Stamkos avoided what appeared to be a serious injury when he took an accidental knee flush to the side of his head moments after Callahan's goal was negated late in the second period, but he returned to start the third period. Stamkos, who already missed more than four months this season due to a broken leg, picked up his second assist of the contest on defenseman Matt Carle's third-period goal and told reporters at Monday's optional skate that he felt good and expects to be in the lineup for Game 4.

P.K. Subban did not finish the regular season on a high note, failing to hit the scoresheet in his final six games, posting a collective minus-5 in that span and having his ice time cut dramatically in half those contests. However, Subban has provided a stark reminder of why he ranks among the league's elite defensemen with a stellar series against Tampa Bay, posting back-to-back games with two assists and playing a leading role during the decisive stretch of Game 3. Subban prevented a tiebreaking tally by swatting a puck out of mid-air seconds before Callahan's goal was waved off and, minutes later, put his team ahead to stay with a brilliant individual rush to set up a goal by Brendan Gallagher.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 5-1-2 in the last eight meetings.
        * Lightning are 2-5 in the last seven meetings in Montreal.
        * Canadiens are 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.

Boston Bruins vs. Detroit Red Wings (+122, 5)

A stomach bug sidelined defenseman Kevan Miller and Matt Bartkowski in the series opener, but the former quickly made his presence felt in Game 2 by rocking Detroit's Drew Miller and Daniel Aldredsson with big hits in the opening minutes. "Millsy, right from the start, I thought he helped set the tone with a couple of big hits, and I think they were within the first five minutes," veteran forward Jarome Iginla said. "He's a very strong competitor and it was great to have him back on the lineup and set that tone early." Somewhat overlooked thus far in the series has been the play of netminder Tuukka Rask, who has allowed one goal in each contest and beat Detroit on Sunday for only the second time in eight career meetings (2-5-1).

One of the enduring images of Game 2 was a stare-down at the end of the first period between Detroit's Smith and Boston's Zdeno Chara - with the towering Bruins captain laughing at Smith and attempting to goad him into a fight. Smith acknowledged it was not a wise idea to confront the 6-9 Chara, a move backed by Red Wings coach Mike Babcock. "I thought he made a really good decision," Babcock said of taking the high road. "You walk into a bar and there's this beautiful young gal, standing next to this 6-foot-5 monster who you know makes his living fighting for a living and you're the best pool player in the bar. Are you going to play pool? Or are you going to fight. Figure it out, seems pretty simple to me."

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 4-1-2 in the last seven meetings.
        * Bruins are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings.
        * Bruins are 0-4 in the last four meetings in Detroit.

New York Rangers vs. Philadelphia Flyers (-114, 5)

After struggling to adjust to his new team, Martin St. Louis has hit the ground running in the postseason. The 38-year-old has scored a goal and set up two others in the first two games of the series and has two tallies and eight assists in nine career playoff meetings with the Flyers. St. Louis' three points are tied for the team lead with Brad Richards, who collected a goal and two assists in Game 1.

Philadelphia avenged a series-opening 4-1 setback by rebounding from an early two-goal deficit to post a 4-2 victory on Sunday. Ray Emery will make his third consecutive start in place of the injured Steve Mason, who ruled himself out for Tuesday with an upper-body injury. The Flyers return to the comforts of Wells Fargo Center, where they claimed both regular-season meetings with the Rangers to push their home winning streak in the all-time series to three games.

        TRENDS:

        * Home team is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
        * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Philadelphia.
        * Rangers are 1-4 in the last five meetings in Philadelphia.

San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings (-125, 5)

Everything is going San Jose's way thus far in the series, as evidenced by its comeback from a 2-0 deficit in Game 2. Known more for their pugilistic skills and questionable hits than their scoring prowess, Mike Brown and Raffi Torres scored less than five minutes apart in the second period to forge a tie and spark the club's run of seven straight tallies. Torres has collected five goals and two assists in seven games this season, including a tally in each of the first two games of the series.

Trevor Lewis is the only Los Angeles forward with a goal in the series. Centers Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter have recorded two assists apiece while right wings Marian Gaborik, Justin Williams and Dustin Brown and centers Mike Richards and Jarret Stoll have yet to notch a point. Richards received a double-minor for spearing Logan Couture late in the third period Sunday but was not suspended by the league. Los Angeles has won eight straight home meetings with San Jose.

        TRENDS:

        * Sharks are 1-10 in the last 11 meetings in Los Angeles.
        * Over is 9-4-2 in the last 15 meetings in Los Angeles.
        * Home team is 35-16 in the last 51 meetings.

Game of the Day: Yankees at Red Sox
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox (-104, 7.5)

The Boston Red Sox already got a chance to play against Jacoby Ellsbury when they visited the New York Yankees earlier this month. The home fans will get their first chance to welcome back the two-time World Series champion when the Yankees make their first visit of the season to Boston on Tuesday. Ellsbury is off to a strong start for first-place New York and had five hits against the Red Sox when the Yankees took three of four at home from April 10-13.

Boston went through an emotional weekend at home with several tributes to the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings and ended up splitting a four-game set with the Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox overcame a five-run deficit to take Sunday’s game and nearly overcame a six-run hole before leaving the tying run on third base at the end of Monday’s 7-6 setback. The Yankees dropped two of three to the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend, allowing 27 runs in the first two games before recovering for a 5-1 victory in 12 innings in Sunday’s finale.

7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), NESN (Boston)

                    LINE HISTORY:
The Red Sox opened as -133 home favorites and now sit at -104.

                    POWER RANKINGS:
                    New York (-186), Boston (-165).

                    INJURY REPORT:
                    N/A.

                    PITCHING MATCHUP:
Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (2-0, 2.05 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Jon Lester (2-2, 2.17)

Tanaka will get his first taste of the historic rivalry after his turn did not come up during the first meeting between the teams. The Japan native has been everything New York expected when they brought him in during the offseason and is coming off his best start after holding the Chicago Cubs to two hits over eight scoreless innings last week. Tanaka has notched 28 strikeouts while issuing only two walks in 22 total innings.

Lester retired the first 16 batters he faced and outdueled Chris Sale to earn a win at the Chicago White Sox last week, striking out nine over eight frames. The 30-year-old beat the Yankees in his previous turn, surrendering two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings, and has yielded two or fewer earned runs in each of his four starts. Lester gave up a single to Ellsbury and walked him once in the first meeting.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Under is 4-0 in Lester's last four starts vs. Yankees.
                    * Under is -1 in Lester's last five home starts vs. Yankees.
                    * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Boston.
                    * Yankees are 1-4 in the last five meetings in Boston.

                    CONSENSUS:
The wagers are split 50-50 between the Yankees and Red Sox.

Rehab assingment coming soon for Kershaw

Clayton Kershaw looks as though he will get his first rehab start Friday according to Ken Gurnick. The Los Angeles Dodgers ace and 2013 National League Cy Young winner has yet to see action this season due to muscle strain in his back.

Kershaw has been throwing bullpen sessions for the Dodgers, but has yet to face any true game situations this season. There is no specific date as to when Kershaw will be back in the rotation for the Dodgers, but he can only be on rehab assignment for a maximum of 30 days.

Under continues to trend for the National League

Though MLB can be notoriously balanced over a 162-game season, but bettors have found solace wagering in the National League in the past week. The NL is carrying an O/U record of 16-28-4 (58.3 percent under rate) over the past seven days of action.

The record has been even more stellar between Sunday and Monday, with the NL failing to top the total nine of 14 times (3-9-2) in the past two days.

There are 15 games of the schedule in the MLB Tuesday, with seven in the NL.

Chicago White Sox left-hander Chris Sale will be placed on the disabled list with a flexor muscle strain, Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com reported Monday.

An MRI showed no ligament damage, and the White Sox hope Sale won't miss more than 15 days.

Nonetheless, the outlook is worse than it was earlier Monday, when manager Robin Ventura said Sale was likely to miss his scheduled start on Tuesday against Detroit because of general muscle soreness, but might pitch on Wednesday. Obviously that won't happen now.

Ventura's statement came after Sale threw a career-high 127 pitches in his previous start.

Right-hander Andre Rienzo, who was called up from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday, was scheduled to pitch Wednesday, but he will pitch on Tuesday instead.

Rockies' Cuddyer put on disabled list

Colorado Rockies right fielder/first baseman Michael Cuddyer, who won the National League batting title last season, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with a hamstring injury.

Cuddyer injured his left hamstring last Thursday. He sat out the games played on Saturday and Sunday as a member of the active roster before the team decided to place him on the disabled list.

Cuddyer is eligible to return on May 3 when the Rockies host the Mets.

Utility man Charlie Culberson was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take Cuddyer's place on the active roster.

NHL playoff favorites go 4-0 Monday, continue to dominate

After going 4-0 Monday, favorites in the NHL playoffs continue to dominate at the betting window. Through the first six days of action, the favorites have a 16-5 record (71.4 percent) going an astounding 9-2 (81.8 percent) from Saturday to Monday.

Of the 16 wins by the favorites, 15 have come on home ice with the lone road fave win being the Pittsburgh Penguins Monday.

There are four games on tap for Tuesday with Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia and Los Angeles favored on the moneyline.

Blues' C David Backes, questionable Wednesday

Backes left Game 2 after taking an illegal hit to the head and did not play in Game 3. He is questionable for Game 4 against the Blackhawks on Wednesday.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Four big betting trends paying off in the NHL playoffs
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first five days of Stanley Cup playoff action have been largely action-packed and occasionally controversial - and like every year at this time, some interesting betting trends have emerged.

Here are four developments bettors should pay attention to moving forward:

                            Overs a-plenty

So much for teams settling into defensive shells come playoff time. Bettors leaning on the Over have been handsomely rewarded through the first 17 games of the postseason calendar, going 11-2-4 as teams pile up the goals at an astounding rate. Of the two games that played to the Under, one - Anaheim's 3-2 triumph over Dallas Friday night - came within a half-goal of the total. Winning teams have scored four or more goals 14 times in the first 17 contests - an unbelievable stretch that should taper off as the playoffs continue.

                            Rocky road for underdogs

Road teams traditionally don't fare well over the first two games of a best-of-seven series, and this year is no exception. The home team has gone 12-5 through the first five days - slightly better than the 11-7 edge the higher-seeded team had through the same stretch a season ago. Montreal was the exception, winning its first two games in Tampa Bay before taking a 3-0 stranglehold in its first-round series with the Lightning thanks to a 3-2 home victory Sunday night. Home teams have outscored road opponents 62-47 to date.

                            Special teams explosion

Goals are being scored at an incredible pace on special teams as well as 5-on-5. The 16 Stanley Cup playoff participants have combined to score 26 power-play goals through the first 17 games of the tournament - an average of 1.53 per game. This is well ahead of last year's pace, when 86 playoff games yielded 95 man-advantage tallies for an average of 1.1 per contest. Shorthanded goals are up as well. Teams have already scored six of them in 2014, compare to 14 in the entire 2013 postseason.

                            First is not always best

This year's playoff teams appear to have mastered the art of the comeback, and that should be music to live bettors' ears. Teams scoring first through the opening five days of Stanley Cup competition are just 9-8 so far - a meager 52.9-percent success rate that pales in comparison to the league-wide regular-season mark of 69.5 percent. And it isn't just one or two teams rallying for the victory. Eight different teams - Anaheim, Colorado, Montreal, San Jose, Columbus, the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia - have won after trailing first.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
