    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- LaMarcus Aldridge scored 46 points, grabbed 18 reobunds in Portland's OT win at Houston. Blazers got only seven points from its bench in the win.

-- Wizards outscored Bulls 30-18 in 4th quarter, Wiz wins 102-93 in Chicago.

-- Road teams won five of the eight Game 1's in NBA's first round.

-- Matt Kuchar chipped in on 18 to win PGA event on Hilton Head; he had shot a combined +10 in his last five Sunday rounds-- he was -7 Sunday.

-- Miami beat Seattle 3-2; Marlins are 9-4 at home, 0-6 on road.

-- Orioles led 5-0 in sixth inning at Fenway, lost 6-5 on 9th inning throwing error-- in first three weeks of season, there has been some horrendous defensive play.

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

    13) Can you remember a team falling apart as badly within a season as the Indiana Pacers are right now? Not many top seeds have lost in the first round of the NBA playoffs, but who has a lot of confidence that these Pacers will advance?

    12) Charlotte Bobcats went back home after losing Game 1 in Miami, with Game 2 not scheduled until Wednesday; Michael Jordan doesn't want his guys hanging around South Beach with time on their hands.

    11) Clippers/Warriors looks like it'll be a fun series to watch; over last 37 years, these franchises combined to win only seven playoff series.

    10) Tampa Bay Rays scored 27 runs Friday/Saturday, after scoring total of 16 runs in their previous 10 games, then they scored one run Sunday. Feast or famine.

    9) If they ever make a movie about Ike Davis' life, Ben Affleck has to play Davis; they look an awful lot alike, even talk a little bit the same.

    8) Every time I see Evan Gattis play for the Braves, I can't help but think of the old wrestler Ivan Putski. Short, very powerful arms.

    7) Speaking of the Braves, Mike Minor is supposed to get back in their rotation this coming weekend; he threw 80 pitches in a rehab start this past weekend.

    6) Cleveland Indians are only big league team that hasn't scored in first inning of a home game (0-9); Houston Astros are only team that hasn't scored in first inning on the road (0-9).

    5) Minnesota Twins claimed OF Sam Fuld on waivers from the A's; he's not the best hitter but he's a terrific fielder, can run, an outstanding 4th outfielder.

    4) Ivan Nova is on the DL with a UCL tear, could be headed under the knife for Tommy John surgery. Lot of those this spring.

    3) Orlando Antigua is the new hoop coach at South Florida; he recruited for John Calipari, so its not a surprise we're seeing USF listed on recruits' short lists.

We talked yesterday about point guard Kareem Canty transferring from Marshall to Auburn; turns out that may not happen, with USF now suddenly in the picture. If Antigua turns out to be a bigtime recruiter as a head coach, USF is going to become a force in the AAC, especially with Louisville now out of the league.

    2) Cincinnati Bengals brought one QB to their facility to work out this spring; not Manziel, not Bortles, Bridgewater or Carr. Pitt QB Tom Savage; go figure.

    1) NHL playoffs provide great drama; how about St Louis Blues winning first two games of their playoff series in OT, after tying both games in last 2:00 of regulation? Blues have only won one playoff series the last eight years- they're playing NHL's defending champ Chicago Blackhawks, who won two of last four Stanley Cups.

Monday's NBA playoffs betting news and notes
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder (-7, 189.5)

Memphis needs better performances from big men Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, who were a combined 14-of-40 from the field in the opener. Randolph had 21 points and 11 rebounds but was just 7-of-21 shooting and also missed five free throws while Gasol (16 points) was mostly a nonfactor while going 7-of-19 from the field.Memphis dominated the first 15-plus minutes of the second half as it cut a 22-point halftime deficit to two early in the fourth quarter.

Point guard Russell Westbrook missed the second-round series in which Memphis disposed of Oklahoma City in five games last season and was intent on making a difference in the opener. Westbrook scored 16 of his 23 points in the first half when the Thunder led by as many 25 points and finished with 10 rebounds. He was displeased with his third-quarter performance but was back on his game in the fourth when Oklahoma City reasserted control. Forward Kevin Durant started the series strong with 33 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

      TRENDS:

      * Favorite is 4-0-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
      * Home team is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings.
      * Over is 14-6 in the last 20 meetings in Oklahoma City.

Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Clippers (-8, 212.5)

Golden State committed 23 turnovers and squandered an 11-point fourth-quarter lead but held the Clippers scoreless over the final 1:30 to lock up the win. Curry was hounded the entire game and finished with 14 points but Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green both hit big shots and Klay Thompson went for 22 points. The Warriors are without center Andrew Bogut (broken rib) in the series but still managed a 48-42 advantage on the glass as Lee grabbed 13 boards.

Blake Griffin scored 16 points in only 19 minutes and fouled out on a loose ball call in the final minute as the referees whistled a total of 51 fouls. Chris Paul hit a pair of big 3-pointers to get Los Angeles back into the game late in the fourth but committed six turnovers and five fouls while trying to contain Curry and Thompson. Los Angeles has dropped five straight postseason games.

      TRENDS:

      * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Los Angeles.
      * Over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
      * Home team is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings.

Monday's NHL playoffs betting news and notes
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (+111, 5.5)

Penguins' Brian Gibbons scored two goals 54 seconds apart early in the first period on Saturday before exiting with an undisclosed injury. Coach Dan Bylsma said the rookie is considered day-to-day but would not elaborate. Fellow forward Marcel Goc skated on Sunday as he attempts to work his way back from a nine-game absence due to a foot injury.

Fedor Tyutin suffered an undisclosed injury during Saturday's tilt, but fellow defenseman Jack Johnson picked up the slack by scoring a power-play goal with 6:01 remaining in the third period to tie the game at 3-3. Johnson logged a team-best 38:21 of ice time as Columbus played with five blue-liners. Coach Todd Richards remained tight-lipped on Tyutin's status, although defensemen Dalton Prout and Nick Schultz took part in Sunday's optional practice.

        TRENDS:

        * Penguins are 5-0 in the last five meetings in Columbus.
        * Penguins are 7-1 in the last eight meetings.
        * Over is 7-2 in the last nine meetings in Columbus.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Minnesota Wild (-125, 5)

There was some debate as to whether Colorado should select defenseman Seth Jones or MacKinnon with the top overall pick in last year's draft. No more. MacKinnon matched Stastny by scoring a highlight-reel goal and collecting three assists in Game 2 to give him seven points in the series, tying a record set by Montreal's Odie Cleghorn in 1919 and matched by Boston's Barry Pederson in 1982 for the highest point total by a player in his first two career playoff games. MacKinnon became the first 18-year-old to collect six assists in a postseason series.

Trade-deadline acquisition Ilya Bryzgalov was thrust into an unexpected starting role due to injury and responded by going 7-0-3 in his first 10 starts to seize the No. 1 netminder's job entering the playoffs. But after Bryzgalov surrendered eight goals in the first two games, there is a widespread feeling that rookie Darcy Kuemper will be between the pipes for Game 3 after stopping all 14 shots he faced in a relief role Saturday. Kuemper missed the final seven games of the regular season with a concussion but said he is up to the challenge of starting.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
        * Avalanche are 4-0 in the last four meetings.
        * Avalanche are 5-3 in the last seven meetings in Minnesota.

St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks (-156, 5)

After complimenting Corey Crawford for his play in Game 1, coach Joel Quenneville agreed with his goaltender's assessment that he needs to be better if Chicago is going to rally in this series. "He said he needs to be better, and he needs to be better," Quenneville told reporters on Sunday. Making the Blackhawks' bid to repeat all the more challenging is the loss of defenseman Brent Seabrook, who was suspended three games by the NHL for his hit to the head of St. Louis captain David Backes on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Ken Hitchcock wasn't too forthcoming with information on Backes (upper body), saying on Sunday that "he's upright and that's about it right now." Patrik Berglund, who has missed the last three games with an upper-body injury, could return to the lineup should Backes be unable to compete. "I told the boys (Saturday) I can't take this anymore," Berglund said. "Hopefully, I will heal fast and be able to help them out on the ice. It's easier that way."

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
        * Blues are 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
        * Home team is 37-18 in the last 55 meetings.

Anaheim Ducks vs. Dallas Stars (-116, 5.5)

Check back later for an in depth preview.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Dallas.
        * Home team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
        * Ducks are 16-35-2 in the last 53 meetings in Dallas.

Orioles' SS J.J. Hardy, questionable Monday

Hardy suffered an apparent right hamstring injury and had to leave Sunday's game. He is questionable for Monday against the Red Sox.

                        Rockies' Carlos Gonzalez, questionable Monday

Gonzalez needed to leave Sunday's game with left knee tendinitis and is questionable for Monday against the Giants.

Kershaw passes test with no pain

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw appears ready for a rehab assignment after hurling a 51-pitch simulated game on Sunday.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner did not report any problems following the workout. Kershaw has been on the disabled list with an upper back problem.

A source told the Los Angeles Times that Kershaw could rejoin the Dodgers on their next road trip, which is from April 29 through May 7.

The left hander reached 90 mph during Sunday's effort, according to manager Don Mattingly.

"It was full effort for me," Kershaw told truebluela.com. "For a 10 a.m. sim game, that's probably all I got."

Kershaw had been scheduled to throw only two innings, but was allowed to pitch a third inning. It was his first time throwing without restrictions since his Opening Day start in Australia nearly one month ago.

Kershaw threw all his pitches without pain, and completed his normal meticulous 34-pitch pregame ritual.

Brewers' Gomez, Pirates' Snider ejected after brawl

Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Travis Snider were ejected from Sunday's game after a brawl broke out in the third inning.

Brewers bench coach Jerry Narron also was ejected in the melee.

Both teams' benches cleared when Gomez and Pirates starting pitcher Gerrit Cole got in a shouting match with each other following' Gomez triple with two outs in the third. Cole, upset that Gomez flipped his bat after hitting the ball, went over to third base to confront Gomez after he slid in safely.

Gomez stepped toward Cole before the benches cleared, including the bullpens of each team. Gomez and Snider shoved each other and Gomez fell to the ground.

Pirates catcher Russell Martin was restrained by teammate Gaby Sanchez as he headed off the field.

Yankees' Nova headed to disabled list

New York Yankees' right-handed pitcher Ivan Nova is headed to the disabled list with a partial tear of a ligament in his right elbow.

Nova left Saturday night's game versus Tampa Bay in the fifth inning after feeling discomfort in the elbow. An MRI after the game revealed the injury. He will be re-evaluated Monday in New York, by Yankees' team doctors.

Chicago's Seabrook suspended three games for hit on Backes

Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook received a three-game suspension for his hit to the head of St. Louis Blues center David Backes in Game 2 of the Western conference playoff series.

Seabrook hit Backes in the head, sending him into the boards late in the third period of the Blues' 4-3 overtime win Saturday night. Backes appeared dazed after the hit. He then left the game and did not return.

Seabrook is not eligible to return to the lineup until Game 6, if the series gets that far. The Blues are up two games to none, with Game 3 Monday in Chicago. The Blackhawks are early -165 favorites.

                          18-year-old MacKinnon, fueling Avs' offense

Nathan MacKinnon led the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-2 victory in Game 2 of their opening round playoff series, becoming just the third player in NHL history to record a four-point night in a playoff game at the age of 18.

MacKinnon now has seven points in his first two playoff games, which ties an NHL playoff record for the most points to start a playoff career.

Game 3 of the Avalanche's playoff series with the Wild will take place Monday in Minnesota, with Colorado currently listed as +115 road dogs.

Phillies' Hamels closing in on return

The Philadelphia Phillies, who are 8-10, are scheduled to play their 21st game of the season Wednesday at Los Angeles. Left-hander Cole Hamels (left biceps tendinitis) will be activated before that game and make his 2014 debut, meaning that a wait of sorts will be over for manager Ryne Sandberg.

His projected rotation for this season will finally be healthy. That rotation was bolstered with the late addition of free agent A.J. Burnett, whom the Phillies signed on Feb. 16. That was right at the outset of spring training, by which time Hamels was behind as the result of the biceps tendinitis he had developed in November.

"Looking at the rotation once we did sign Burnett in the spring and the possibilities, we'll see it next week," Sandberg said, "when Hamels is in there and we start to see him pitch and see the rotation in complete strength. I've been waiting for that day."

The addition of Hamels will give the Phillies three bona fide No. 1 starters as he joins Burnett and left-hander Cliff Lee.

In addition, fifth starter Roberto Hernandez had given the Phillies a chance to win in every outing before Sunday, when he was lifted after giving up two hits to start the fifth. Both those runners scored, giving the Rockies a 6-3 lead in a game the Phillies came back to win 10-9.

The Phillies' other starter is Kyle Kendrick, who has lost seven consecutive decisions, including two this year, but in four starts this season is 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA.

"So all in all, it's the makings of a solid rotation," Sandberg said. "So to finally have that possibility and to see that (with the return of Hamels) -- I'm anxious for that."

Game of the Day: Rangers at Athletics
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics (+126, 6.5)

Yu Darvish has been terrific this season, but the Oakland Athletics have posed a constant challenge for the Texas Rangers' ace. Darvish hopes to solve his prior issues against the Athletics when the teams begin a three-game set in Oakland on Monday. Texas also will try to supply Darvish with some offensive support after scoring a total of seven runs in his first three starts.

There were plenty of runs in the Rangers' most recent game on Sunday, although most of them - 16 of the 18 - were scored by the Chicago White Sox. Texas managed only two hits - both singles - as its five-game winning streak came to an ugly end. Oakland, meanwhile, completed a three-game sweep versus the Houston Astros on Sunday thanks in large part to Josh Donaldson (3-for-4, three RBIs).

The Athletics opened as slight +115 home dogs and have been bet to +126. The run total is currently at 6.5.

                              Oakland (-181), Texas (-136)

                              INJURY REPORT:
Oakland: Yoenis Cespedes - probable (heel)

                              PITCHING MATCHUP:
Rangers RH Yu Darvish (1-0, 0.82 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Dan Straily (1-1, 5.40)

Darvish did not allow a run over 15 innings in his first two starts before yielding two in seven frames in Wednesday's eventual 3-2 win over Seattle. The 27-year-old native of Japan has 23 strikeouts against four walks and has held opponents to a .185 average. However, his lifetime numbers against the Athletics (1-6, 4.30 ERA) include an 0-4 mark with a 4.13 ERA last season.

Straily lasted only 3 2/3 innings in his last outing - an eventual 10-9 win over the Angels last Tuesday. He has surrendered four home runs in 16 2/3 innings this season, although no current members of the Rangers have ever homered against him. Elvis Andrus has endured significant struggles against Straily, going 0-for-14 with five strikeouts against the 25-year-old Californian.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Oakland.
