13) Chicago Cubs played a twinbill in the Bronx Wednesday and didn't score in either game, losing 3-0/2-0, to fall to 4-10. Wait til next year.

Cubs' payroll this year is $92,677,368; player making most money from the Cubs this year is Alfonso Soriano, whom the Cubs are paying $19M to play for Bronx, who are also paying him $5M. Oy.

Only guy who is actually on the Cubs who makes more than $6M this year is the awful pitcher Edwin Jackson, who is somehow making $13M. Yikes.

12) If you get a chance, check out SportsCenter for highlights of Nolan Arenado playing 3B for the Colorado Rockies-- he is a defensive wizard, a tremendous guy with the glove. He made three superior plays, just in Wedsnesday's game.

11) Chicago White Sox lost 6-4 in 14 innings Wednesday; they had to use 2B Leuny Garcia to pitch the 14th inning, because they ran out of relief pitchers. You have to be a terrible manager to run out of pitchers after 13 innings in a game with the DH, where you don't pinch-hit for pitchers.

Seven White Sox relievers before Garcia got only 18 outs total; Pale Hose pitchers walked 15, struck out only five- they threw 131 balls, 144 strikes. Terrible.

10) On the other hand, Braves won 1-0 at Philly, in a rare double complete game; Julio Teheran allowed only three baserunners, Cliff Lee threw 128 pitches in defeat, striking out 13, allowing 11 hits. Don't see games like that much anymore.

9) Memo to mayor of Albany: please pave Colvin Avenue, its a disgrace. When you drive and swerve to avoid potholes is one thing; there are no potholes on this busy street, the whole pavement by east entrance to Armory Garage is decimated.

If the mayor ever drove her car on this street, it damn sure would get paved.

8) Milwaukee Bucks, the worst team in the NBA, sold for $550M and will stay in Wisconsin, where they are hoping for a new arena. They should hope for a lot of new, better players instead. $550M is a lot of cash for a dismal team.

7) Capping off a totally dysfunctional season, the Knicks signed Lamar Odom on Wednesday; Mike Woodson will probably be glad to get fired. Phil Jackson gets the benefit of the doubt since he was a tremendous coach, and there probably isn't a lot of downside to signing Odom, but it just looks strange. Odom is 34, has had a ton of personal problems- whats the point?

6) Why do some baseball teams have captains? They're not necessary; you'll find that leaders emerge on a team, they can't be chosen by management.

5) Miami Marlins are a bad team, Arizona is playing horribly right now, but the Cubs make both of those teams look like the '84 Tigers.

4) The McDonald's by my house was knocked down and a new one is being built on the same site; my question is this: What happens to the people who work in that McDonald's? Are they on vacation, do they get re-assigned to other McDonald's until the new building is finished? I'm curious about this.

3) 19 of 30 NBA teams came in under their season win/loss total.

2) Four of the Angels' last six games have gone extra innings; no one needs a day off Thursday more than the Anaheim bullpen- it is first time since 1975 the Halos had four extra inning games on one homestand.

1) No team scored more than six runs Wednesday; in 15 games, no game had more than five runs scored total in the first five innings. Part of it is the cold weather, but a lot of it is there is a lot less power and speed in the game now.

NBA playoff matchups set

When the Memphis Grizzlies edged the Dallas Mavericks in overtime Wednesday night, sealing the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, the first-round matchups for the NBA's postseason were set.

The Grizzlies avoided a first-round matchup with the top-seeded San Antonio Spurs, instead earning a date with the second-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. The Mavericks will square off with the Spurs.

In the other Western Conference opening-round series, the third-seeded Los Angeles Clippers will play the sixth-seeded Golden State Warriors in an all-California affair, and the fourth-seeded Houston Rockets and fifth-seeded Portland Trail Blazers will meet.

In the East, the Nets lost their regular-season finale to the Cleveland Cavaliers, dropping Brooklyn from the fifth seed to the sixth seed. The Nets will play the third-seeded Toronto Raptors, while the Washington Wizards moved up to No. 5, setting up a battle with the fourth-seeded Chicago Bulls.

The East's top seed, the Indiana Pacers, meet the Atlanta Hawks, the only playoff team with a losing record. The defending champion Miami Heat, seeded second, will play the seventh-seeded Charlotte Bobcats.

Four of the most important stats for betting the NBA Playoffs

The NBA Playoffs are almost here and with the postseason picture all but painted, basketball bettors are beginning to size up the potential matchups.

Before you start getting down on the NBA title futures or wager on the series and Game 1 odds, make sure to check out just which teams excel in these important statistical categories, provided by the mad stats scientists at NumberFire.com:

Second-chance points for/against

Nothing makes or breaks a bet more than a late put-back or a huge offensive rebound that resets the shot clock. Teams with the tenacity to grab those second-chance looks and limit their opponents from them are the ones you want your money on when the playoffs heat up.

The Portland Trail Blazers are the best playoff-bound team at generating second-chance buckets, averaging 16.2 second-chance points per game. Behind them are the Toronto Raptors (15.4), Chicago Bulls (15.0), and Memphis Grizzlies (14.6).

On the other side, the Grizzlies don’t give foes many extra looks, limiting teams to 12.2 second-chance points per game, followed by the Indiana Pacers (12.3), Oklahoma City Thunder (12.4) and Chicago Bulls (12.5).

Surprisingly, some of the top contenders for the NBA title – and those that will see the heftiest pointspreads in the playoffs - rank among the teams allowing the most second-chance points. The Houston Rockets average 14.7 second-chance points against while the Los Angeles Clippers (14.3) and defending champion Miami Heat (14.3) are near the top of the list.

Crunch-time free throws

With playoff spreads tighter than John Stockton’s shorts, every point counts. And when it comes to playoffs success – and ATS success – free throws can quickly add up. Putting your money on a team that won’t fold at the line when the pressure is on is imperative to covering the spread.

NumberFire.com tracks just how well teams shoot freebies in crunch time, providing free-throw percentage in the final five minutes in games decided by five or fewer points – an incredible stat that unveils which teams have ice water in their veins and which teams can’t hit ‘em when they count.

The Thunder top playoff-bound teams with an 85.8 percent clip from the foul line in the last five minutes of games decided by five points or less, which is actually better than their 80.7 free-throw percentage on the season.

Other teams cashing in foul shots late into close games are the Trail Blazers (84.4), Atlanta Hawks (83.3), Grizzlies (82.7) and Dallas Mavericks (80.5) – all three shooting better when the pressure is one than their season averages from the foul line.

As for those postseason teams with knocking knees at the stripe in close games, the Brooklyn Nets stand out as the worst crunch-time team at the foul line, shooting just over 70 percent (70.4) in the last five minutes of games decided by five points or less. The Nets shoot 75.4 percent from the line on the year.

Behind Brooklyn, in terms of poor foul shooting in the crunch, quiver the Rockets (73.9), Raptors (75.0), and Washington Wizards (75.5).

Bench plus/minus

Being able to depend on your reserves is a huge part of pushing through the postseason. With the grind of intense and physical playoff action coupled with the constant travel, teams can wear down quickly if a series goes six or seven games.

Being able to hold the fort while your starters get a blow is crucial come the second season, and no one does that better than the San Antonio Spurs. The NBA’s top team in the regular season boasts an outstanding 8.2 plus/minus when its reserves take the floor. It’s no wonder Gregg Popovich has no problem sitting his stars from time to time.

The Clippers have the second-most steady bench in the Association, with a 7.1 plus/minus. Behind L.A. are the Thunder (6.6), Heat (5.3), Golden State Warriors (4.8), and Rockets (4.7).

The thinnest roster heading to the postseason belongs to Atlanta, which has an underperforming bench with a -0.6 plus/minus on the season. The Nets (-0.5), Charlotte Bobcats (-0.3) and Wizards (0.8) also lack production – on both ends of the floor – when they lean on their backups.

Points off turnovers

Defense wins championships, which is why we always see lower scores come playoff time. But a great defense produces easy offense off turnovers, and when points are at a premium, the team that scores with ease will always cover the spread.

No one has converted their opponents’ mistakes into layups and dunks like Nets, who score 19 percent of their total points off turnovers. Brooklyn averages 8.6 steals and forces 15.9 turnovers per game. The Heat (18.9), Wizards (18.2), and Clippers (18.0) round out the top playoff-bound clubs scoring off turnovers this season.

The Trail Blazers, at 13 percent, get the lowest percentage of points off turnovers in the NBA. Portland averages only 12.1 turnovers forced per game and steals the ball 4.8 times an outing. Behind the Blazers sit the Bobcats (14.9), Rockets (15.0) and Spurs (15.9).

Philadelphia Flyers vs. New York Rangers (-141, 5)

Wayne Simmonds and captain Claude Giroux finished the regular season with a flourish, with the former claiming the team lead in goals (29) and the latter ending up in the top three in the league in points (86). Philadelphia boasts plenty of depth among its forwards as an NHL-best seven players reached the 20-goal plateau.

New York has some injury concerns heading into the series, although both forward Derick Brassard and defenseman Ryan McDonagh look to be ready for Thursday. Brassard told reporters that he feels "100 percent" after dealing with a balky back, despite making a premature exit from practice on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. St. Louis Blues (-125, 5.5)

Corey Crawford has dominated St. Louis in his career, posting an impressive 11-2-3 mark with two shutouts - including a 23-save gem in a 4-0 win on March 19. Ben Smith and Marcus Kruger scored in that contest and each tallied again in Chicago's 4-2 triumph over the Blues on April 6. Smith finished with four goals in the final six games and Marian Hossa netted five in the last 10.

Coach Ken Hitchcock's club was decimated by injuries as St. Louis was shut out three times and mustered all of five goals during its losing streak. Captain David Backes, who has been idled by a foot injury, expects a physical matchup against the Blackhawks. Ryan Miller saw his fortunes change following a blistering start after being acquired from cellar-dwelling Buffalo, losing five decisions while posting a gaudy 3.56 goals-against average.

Minnesota Wild vs. Colorado Avalanche (-133, 5)

The Wild stumbled through most of the month of March before regaining their equilibrium and using a 6-0-1 run to wrap up a second consecutive postseason berth. The Wild persevered despite a revolving door that saw four different players inherit the No. 1 goaltender's job, the latest being trade-deadline acquisition Ilya Bryzgalov, who went 7-0-3 with three shutouts before a meaningless loss in the regular-season finale.

Colorado dominated the season series with a 4-0-1 mark versus Minnesota. Leading scorer Matt Duchene missed the last seven games with a knee injury and will be unavailable for the first two games versus the Wild, but the Avalanche feature four others players with between 60-65 points, including star rookie and No. 1 overall pick Nathan MacKinnon.

Los Angeles Kings vs. San Jose Sharks (-130, 5)

Drew Doughty is expected to be in the lineup for the series opener after missing the final four games of the regular season with an upper-body injury. The defenseman appeared to hurt his shoulder while delivering an open-ice check on Tyler Kennedy in the first period of San Jose's 2-1 victory on April 3.

Several members of the Sharks had stellar seasons, none moreso than Joe Pavelski. The United States Olympian finished third in the league with a career-high 41 goals and also set a personal best with 79 points.
