  • Stepan hopes save starts comeback

    June 12, 2014

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Although Derek Stepan's goal-line save happened in a frantic blur, the New York Rangers center had a few chances to marvel at the replay in the ensuing 24 hours.

''And I was looking right into the camera when they took it,'' he said Thursday, laughing about the inside-the-net camera that captured him knocking the puck underneath Henrik Lundqvist. ''So it was good timing.''

Everything about Stepan's heady play was perfectly timed, but he politely declined credit for saving the Rangers' season in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals. He's just glad he helped to prevent a possible sweep by the Los Angeles Kings, who could have tied the game and likely forced overtime with the goal.

The Rangers survived for another trip to Staples Center and Game 5 on Friday night with major help from two fantastic plays by Stepan and defenseman Anton Stralman, who knocked another puck off the line in the first period of Game 4.

Stepan came through with 1:11 left while the Kings pressed desperately for an equalizer. After the puck trickled underneath Lundqvist and came to rest on the goal line, Stepan dived to his knees, knocking it away and then underneath his goalie.

''Most of it is just reaction,'' Stepan said. ''You don't have much time to think in a situation like that. It's just instinct and reaction.''

Stepan even had the wherewithal to use the side of his glove so he wouldn't close his hand on the puck in the crease, which would have resulted in a penalty shot.

Although he recognized the importance of the play, Stepan didn't let it go to his head.

''It was a fortunate bounce for us,'' Stepan said. ''I got very lucky pushing it under the goaltender. A lot of times, you push it into the back of your goalie, or you push it to one of their guys.''

Dan Girardi also deserved credit for knocking Anze Kopitar out of the play and preventing the Kings' leading scorer from getting a rebound opportunity. The Kings actually weren't near the motionless puck until Jeff Carter took a belated hack at it, but Stepan took care of it.

Stralman made an equally astonishing play in the first period, sweeping a stopped puck off the goal line with his stick while simultaneously preventing Carter from jabbing it home.

Lundqvist made 40 saves in Game 4, but relied on his teammates for two more. After three games of bad bounces and late-game struggles, the Rangers got most of the breaks.

''A couple of times last night, we had that luck that you need in a tight game,'' Lundqvist said. ''Sometimes you say it (and) maybe not mean it 100 percent, but that factor of luck in a series against a good team, you're going to need it to win games. You can't rely on it all the time, but there are moments in games where the difference is so small, that little extra push might help you to get the win.''

A few optimistic Rangers fans jumped onto Twitter after Game 4 and compared Stepan's play to Dave Roberts' steal of third base for the Boston Red Sox in the ninth inning of Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, catalyzing their comeback from an 0-3 series deficit to the New York Yankees.

Stepan knows such optimism is a week premature. The Rangers would have to win four straight games to become the fourth team in NHL history to rally from an 0-3 deficit - just the second in the finals.

But thanks to Stepan's play, the Rangers have a shot to make it to Game 7 - which just happens to be scheduled for Stepan's 24th birthday on June 18.

''As a group, you gain some confidence, but there's no momentum in a series like this,'' Stepan said. ''You just keep working for the bounces.''

Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers (-159, 5)

            Kings lead series 3-1.

The Los Angeles Kings get a chance to capture their second championship in three years at home as they host the New York Rangers in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup final on Friday. After winning the first three contests to push New York to the brink of elimination, Los Angeles was unable to complete the sweep as it dropped a 2-1 decision at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. Benoit Pouliot and Martin St. Louis scored while Henrik Lundqvist made 40 saves as the Rangers improved to 11-2 in their last 13 elimination games and won their NHL-record eighth straight such contest at home.

Captain Dustin Brown netted the lone goal for the Kings, who had the opportunity to claim the Cup on the two-year anniversary of their first championship. Los Angeles outshot New York 15-1 in the third period of Game 4 and also dominated on faceoffs, winning 41 of the 65 draws. The Kings are 7-4 at home this postseason while the Rangers are 6-6 on the road.

LINE HISTORY: The Kings opened as -163 faves, dropped to -155 immediately after and have since moved up to -159

            INJURY REPORT: N/A

ABOUT THE KINGS: Contrary to expectation, Los Angeles has been outhit in three of the first four games of the series. The team has had the edge in faceoffs, barely outdueling New York in each of the first three contests before owning the category in Game 4. That's a hollow victory to Brown, who was disappointed that his club was unable to finish off the Rangers. "We weren't good enough to win," he said. "It's about finding a way to be better. It is an opportunity lost."

ABOUT THE RANGERS: Pouliot's goal 7:25 into Game 4 was New York's first tally since Derick Brassard scored at 14:50 of the second period in Game 2, ending a drought of 123 minutes, 1 second. The tally was Pouliot's second of the series, as he also netted the first goal of the final. St. Louis also tallied for the second time this series and has recorded a team-high eight goals in 24 playoff games after scoring only once in 19 regular-season contests after being acquired from Tampa Bay.

            TRENDS:

            * Over is 7-2-1 In Kings last 10 games.

NHL roundup: No. 2 draft pick signs with Sabres
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Buffalo Sabres signed No. 2 overall draft pick Sam Reinhart to a three-year contract on Saturday.

The Sabres also signed forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas to a one-year entry-level contract.

Reinhart, an 18-year-old forward, spent the past four seasons with the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League. In 203 WHL games, he had 101 goals and 254 points. Last season, Reinhart was named WHL Player of the Year and Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year after tying Edmonton Oilers prospect Leon Draisaitl, the No. 3 overall draft pick, for fourth in the league with 105 points.

Samuels-Thomas, 24, was selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the seventh round of the 2009 draft. The Sabres acquired his rights last Wednesday from the Winnipeg Jets in a trade for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2015 draft.

---The Minnesota Wild signed forward Jordan Schroeder to a two-year contract and defenseman Jonathon Blum to a one-year deal on Friday.

Financial terms were not released by the team. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that both deals are two-way contracts.

Schroeder, 23, had three goals and three assists in 25 games with the Vancouver Canucks last season. In 56 career NHL games, he has six goals and nine assists. He also has 47 goals and 115 points in 192 AHL games with the Manitoba Moose and Chicago Wolves. He was the No. 22 overall pick in the 2009 draft by the Canucks out of the University of Minnesota.

Blum, 25, had one assist in 15 games with the Wild last season. He also had seven goals and 29 points in 54 AHL games with Iowa. In 106 NHL games, he has seven goals and 23 points. He was the No. 23 overall pick in the 2007 draft by the Nashville Predators.

                • NHL roundup: Bartowski signs with Bruins

Matt Bartowski avoided salary arbitration with the Boston Bruins, signing a one-year deal worth $1.25 million on Monday.

Bartkowski, 26, tallied 18 assists for the Bruins last season in 64 regular-season games and one assist in eight playoff games. He has 20 assists in 84 career games.

The deal avoids a July 30 arbitration date.

Bartkowski was drafted by the Florida Panthers in the seventh round of the 2008 draft, and came to the Bruins in a 2010 trade that included Dennis Seidenberg.

---The Los Angeles Kings agreed to terms on new contracts for restricted free agent defenseman Brayden McNabb and restricted free agent left winger Andy Andreoff.

The 23-year-old McNabb signed for two years. He is a 6-foot-4, 208-pound native of Davidson, Saskatchewan who has appeared in 37 career NHL regular-season games -- all with the Buffalo Sabres -- over the past three seasons, totaling eight points (one goal, seven assists) and 21 penalty minutes.

The 23-year-old Andreoff signed for one year. The 6-foot-1, 207-pound native of Pickering, Ontario recently wrapped up his second full season in Manchester, collecting 35 points (11 goals, 24 assists), a team-leading 133 penalty minutes in 76 regular-season games.

---Defenseman Dylan Olsen signed a two-year contract with the Florida Panthers.

The Panthers also signed forwards Garrett Wilson and Ryan Martindale to one-year, two-way contracts.

---The Carolina Hurricanes and right winger Justin Shugg agreed to a one-year, two-way contract.

Shugg will make $600,000 in the NHL or $70,000 in the American Hockey League this season.

---Defenseman Julius Honka and the Dallas Stars finalized a three-year entry-level contract.

Financial terms of the deal with Dallas' first-round pick (No. 14) in the 2014 draft were not disclosed.

---The Chicago Blackhawks hired Kevin Dineen, who coached Canada's women's national team to a gold medal at the Sochi Olympics, as an assistant coach.

Dineen was teammates with Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville from 1984 to 1990 when both were members of the Hartford Whalers.

---Tony Granato will join Mike Babcock's staff as an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings, according to reports.

Granato joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as an assistant coach in 2009 but was fired when Mike Johnston was hired to replace Dan Bylsma as coach on June 25.

Before joining the Penguins, Granato, who turns 50 on July 25, spent seven seasons with the Colorado Avalanche coaching staff, including parts of three seasons as their head coach. He guided the Avalanche to the Stanley Cup playoffs in back-to-back seasons in 2003 and 2004.
