Detroit Pistons best NBA Over bet of the last 24 years
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the final horn sounded on Detroit’s recent 122-100 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the 2013-14 Pistons etched themselves into NBA betting history.

The final score of Wednesday’s game marked the 53rd time Detroit topped the total this season, overtaking the 1990-91 Indiana Pacers, who went 52-28 Over/Under, as the best NBA Over bet of the past 24 years. And Detroit may not be done there.

The Pistons, at 53-26 Over/Under (67 percent Over), still have three more games to go before the end of the season. They visit the Chicago Bulls – the NBA’s best Under bet at 31-47 O/U – Friday, host the Toronto Raptors (42-36 O/U), and make a trip to play the Oklahoma City Thunder (39-39 O/U) before shutting it down in Motown.

The Pistons were highly regarded as the standard for defense during their NBA title runs as the “Bad Boys” in the late 80’s and early 90’s, and were among the league’s stingiest teams when they made back-to-back Finals appearances in 2004 and 2005, winning the championship by shutting down the powerful Los Angeles Lakers in 2004.

However, Detroit has been one of the most steady Over winners in recent years. The Pistons haven’t finished below .500 Over/Under since 2008-09 and have a combined 217-169-5 O/U count since – playing Over the total in 56 percent of their games the past five NBA seasons.

“It is interesting to note that the Pistons' Over run began right after their strong championship teams that played better defense,” says Covers Expert Steve Merril. “Perhaps the oddsmakers were a bit slow to adjust to the weaker Detroit teams that followed, especially weaker on defense.”

Detroit has steadily crushed the total this season, opening the schedule with a 7-2 Over/Under stretch. The market quickly overreacted to the Pistons’ Over potential and the team stayed Under the number for three straight games. That was the longest Under run Detroit bettors saw all season, with the Pistons posting more than two straight Unders only twice.

Detroit rolled to 10 Over wins in a row between Dec. 8 and Dec. 23, fattening the pockets of total bettors just in time for the holidays. Its current form finds the franchise on a 6-1 O/U streak, allowing an average of 114 points against in each of those Over paydays. That’s almost 10 points higher than the team’s season average of 104.5 points against.

“The extreme Over teams usually have a combination of good offense and bad defense, but if I had to choose one, I'd say bad defense is the cause for a more extreme Over team,” says Merril. “The reason is because offenses will always have good and bad or cold shooting nights, while bad defensive teams are normally bad every night.”

Since 1990, only eight teams have finished the season with 50 or more Over wins. Behind the Pistons and Pacers are the 1991-92 Charlotte Hornets, who finished with a 51-31 O/U mark. The 2001-02 Dallas Mavericks, 2007-08 New York Knicks, 2006-07 Minnesota Timberwolves, 2002-03 Los Angeles Lakers, and 2002-03 Golden State Warriors all topped the total 50 times in their respective seasons.

Latos misses another rehab start due to elbow

Mat Latos has been scratched from his second minor league start. Latos had knee surgery in February and started the season on the DL, but had another procedure on his right elbow in October.

Reds trainer C. Trent Rosecrans told the Cincinnati Enquirer "It’s back to more treatment, instead of pitching. We were hoping if the bullpen went well today that maybe he could pitch on Sunday or Monday. That doesn’t look reasonable right now."

Latos is not expected back in the Reds lineup until at least mid-May.

Machado to hit in simulated game Saturday

Manny Machado is going to take swings in a simulated game Saturday for the first time since having surgery on his left knee.

Machado will have two at-bats against Johan Santana during the Orioles extended spring camp. The final step for Machado before he can go on rehab assignment in the minors now is to get medically cleared to run.

Baltimore has been using a platoon of Jonathon Schoop, Ryan Flaherty and Steve Lombardozzi who have been a huge drop-off from Machado.

                  Angels' Hamilton undergoes thumb surgery

Angels left fielder Josh Hamilton had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb on

Friday, and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

Hamilton injured the thumb when he tried to beat out a play at first with a head-first dive on

April 8 at Seattle, something he said he's done instinctually throughout his career.

Hamilton was off to a hot start, hitting .444 (12-for-27) with two homers and six RBIs in eight

games, which he attributes to the return of a bounce in his stance.

The bounce is a timing mechanism he said he stopped using last season, coinciding with his

season-long struggles at the plate. Now, the bounce is back.

No drama, playoff field already set

With the Dallas Stars clinching the final Westen Conference wild card spot Friday, the NHL playoff field is all set. If the playoffs were to start today, the first round match-ups would look like this (Home team listed on the left):

                    Western Conference:
                    Colorado Avalanche vs. Minnesota Wild
St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks
                    Anaheim Ducks vs. Dallas Stars
San Jose Sharks vs. L.A. Kings

                    Eastern Conference:
Boston Bruins vs. Detroit Red WIngs
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Montreal Canadiens
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets
Philadelphia Flyers vs. New York Rangers

Ryan Malone arrested for cocaine possession

Tampa Bay Lightning LW Ryan Malone was arrested early Saturday morning for driving under the influence and suspicion of cocaine possession.

At 3:23 AM (ET), Malone was pulled over by the cops and brought into custody thereafter. Malone's blood alcohol level was .116 (.08 is the legal limit) during his booking.

Lightning GM Steve Yzerman released a statement saying "We are aware of the situation concerning Ryan Malone this morning.Ryan will not travel with the team to Washington today, but beyond that we cannot comment further at this time."

Stars clinch playoff berth with win over Blues

Since Trevor Daley is the longest-tenured player on Dallas and the only player remaining from the last time the Stars made the playoffs, it seemed appropriate that he was front and center with a goal and an assist in a 3-0 shutout of the St. Louis Blues on Friday to clinch their first playoff spot in six years.

The Stars (40-40-11, 91 points) also received a power-play goal from center Tyler Seguin in the second period and a goal from left winger Ryan Garbutt in the third. Benn had two assists for Dallas, which got 22 saves from goalie Kari Lehtonen, who recorded his fifth shutout of the season and the 27th of his career.

Dallas doubled its advantage to 2-0 at 11:58 of the second when Seguin scored with Dallas on the power play, his 37th goal of the season. Seguin's goal came after a nice pass through the St. Louis crease by Benn, a feed Seguin finished with a one-timer that he tucked perfectly inside the far post.

The Stars had gone on the power play just 10 seconds earlier after Jaskin was called for hooking on Stars center Cody Eakin.

Dallas outshot the Blues 21-6 in the middle frame.

Spurs secure top seed in West with win

After San Antonio's devastating loss to the Miami Heat in last year's NBA Finals, some questioned whether the Spurs could rebound from it.

Ten months later, they answered those doubts, clinching the top seed in the Western Conference with the best record in the NBA.

Guard Danny Green had a career-high 33 points, leading the Spurs with a 112-104 win over the Phoenix Suns on Friday night at the AT&T Center.

Green was 12 of 17 from the field and hit seven 3-pointers as San Antonio (62-18) extended its home winning streak to 15 games.

Guard Tony Parker and forward Kawhi Leonard both added 18 points in the win.

Curry's triple-double helps Warriors clinch playoff spot

A record night by guard Stephen Curry lifted the Golden State Warriors into the playoffs.

After blowing a 20-point lead Thursday night in a loss to the Denver Nuggets, the Warriors avoided repeating the same mistake, posting a 112-95 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on Friday night.

Curry had a triple-double with 30 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds, becoming the first Warriors' player since Wilt Chamberlain to record four triple-doubles in a season. Chamberlain had five during the 1962-63 campaign.

Curry connected on 12 of 20 shots, including four of five from behind the 3-point arc.

Thanks so much Udog--I've been getting my dunkel ratings off your thread practically every day lately. I've used them for years --and never had a problem--till this year.
