Maple Leafs at Lightning: What bettors need to know
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Tampa Bay Lightning (-180, 5.5)

The Toronto Maple Leafs attempt to keep their fading playoff hopes alive with three games on the road to end the regular season, starting with a visit to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday. The Maple Leafs have played one more game and stand three points behind Columbus for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference after a demoralizing 4-2 loss to Winnipeg on Saturday. The Lightning will be motivated after dropping their last two games since clinching a spot in the postseason.

The Maple Leafs have lost four straight on the road during a 2-9-0 stretch and will be without 44-point scorer Joffrey Lupul (knee surgery) the rest of the way while No. 1 goalie Jonathan Bernier (lower-body injury) is doubtful. The Lightning have struggled defensively of late and trail Montreal by four points for second in the Atlantic Division with a game in hand. Captain Steven Stamkos boasts 13 goals in 20 career games against the Maple Leafs – three in a 5-3 victory March 19.

    TV:
7:30 p.m. ET; RDS, SNET-Ontario (Toronto), FSN Florida (Tampa Bay)

    ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (38-33-8):
James Reimer must step up in goal the final three games to give Toronto a chance, but no matter who is between the pipes the Maple Leafs must play better defense. Toronto allows a league-high 35.9 shots per game after Winnipeg peppered Reimer with 41 – 15 in the third period - with its season on the line. The Maple Leafs have plenty of weapons on the offensive end and Phil Kessel leads the way with 80 points, fourth in the league through Sunday and two from matching his career high.

    ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (42-27-9):
Tampa Bay yielded nine goals combined to Calgary and Dallas the last two games after one of its most complete efforts since the Olympics in a 3-1 win over Montreal on April 1. “Hopefully this is out of our system and we can come down from our high chair after making the playoffs and realize that there are other teams that are coming and can still catch us,” Stamkos told the Tampa Tribune. “We’ll learn from this.” The Lightning lead Detroit by five points for third in the Atlantic Division.

    TRENDS:

    * Under is 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings in Tampa Bay.
    * Maple Leafs are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.
    * Maple Leafs are 2-9 in their last 11 overall.
    * Lightning are 7-3 in their last 10 vs. Eastern Conference.

    OVERTIME:

    1. Tampa Bay announced Monday it had signed GM Steve Yzerman to a four-year contract extension.

    2. Toronto is fifth in the league on the power play (20.6 percent), but 28th in penalty killing (78.5).

    3. Stamkos, who has 37 points in 33 games, will finish his fifth straight season recording at least a point per contest.

Pucking the trends: NHL weekly betting news and notes
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 31-April 6.

      Hot team

      Nashville Predators (2-0 SU)

The Predators weren't busy last week, but they made the most of their reduced schedule by winning a pair of tough road games to remain mathematically alive in the Western Conference playoff hunt. Nashville kicked off the week with an impressive 5-2 triumph over host Anaheim behind a two-goal, one-assist performance from Mike Fisher. The Predators followed that up with a 3-0 triumph in San Jose on the strength of a sensational 35-save effort from backup netminder Carter Hutton.

      Cold team

      Phoenix Coyotes (0-3 SU)

Phoenix has tumbled out of the Western Conference playoff scene thanks to a four-game losing skid - equaling its longest of the season. This one couldn't have come at a worse time, as the Coyotes now find themselves a point behind eighth-place Dallas with both teams having four games remaining. Phoenix opened the week with a 2-1 shootout loss to the Winnipeg Jets before falling 4-0 in Los Angeles and capping the dreadful stretch with a 3-2 shootout defeat to the lowly Edmonton Oilers.

      Best Over play

      Chicago Blackhawks (2-0-1 O/U)

Strong "over" results were hard to find this past week, which made the Blackhawks one of the few teams to pay bettors off. Despite playing without injured star forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, Chicago found a way to manufacture enough offense to put together a three-game winning streak, earning a push in a 3-2 shootout win over Minnesota before defeating Columbus 4-3 and topping St. Louis 4-2. The breakout was a critical one for Chicago, which had scored just four goals in its previous three games.

      Best Under play

      Carolina Hurricanes (0-4 O/U)

The Hurricanes have been the team to bet when it comes to "unders", reeling off six in a row and going 1-10 O/U in their last 11. After dropping a 2-1 shootout decision to the Ottawa Senators to open the week, Carolina rode solid goaltending Anton Khudobin to consecutive 4-1 victories over the Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas Stars. Khudobin was solid again on Saturday, but the Hurricanes offense couldn't support him as they fell 3-1 to New Jersey to fall to a Metropolitan Division-worst 29-42 O/U on the season.

      Surveying the schedule

The St. Louis Blues still have the inside track for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference - owning a three-point advantage over Anaheim with four games remaining for each team - and will face four teams outside the top-six in their respective conferences to wrap up the regular season. The Blues open at home against Washington before heading on the road for games in Minnesota and Dallas. The Blues then end the season at home versus Detroit.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week's best NHL spot bet opportunities
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Letdown spot

The Senators haven't done themselves any favors lately, dropping two of their last three games to all but fall out of the playoff picture entirely. They are, however, fresh off a win over the Rangers at MSG on Saturday night.

After being idle for a couple of days in New York, I'm not anticipating the Sens bringing their 'A' game on Tuesday night, as they make the short trip to Long Island. Despite being undermanned, the Isles have been playing well, winners of five of their last seven games overall. I like their chances on home ice in this spot.

        Lookahead spot

The Ducks picked up their 50th win of the season last week against Edmonton, but followed it up with a stinker against the Predators, dropping a 5-2 decision on home ice. After playing in Edmonton on Sunday night, they'll move on to Vancouver on Monday.

Note that Anaheim has a bigger game on deck Wedneday night against the rival Sharks in San Jose. It's unlikely we'll see them go full throttle against a Canucks squad they just defeated 5-1 a little over a week ago. The Canucks may be down, but they're not out, as we saw on Saturday when they skated past the surging Kings.

        Schedule spot

It's going to be a busy week for the Islanders, and with that in mind, they'll likely find themselves in tough on Friday night in New Jersey.

New York will be playing its fourth game in six nights against the Devils. As I mentioned earlier, the Isles have been playing well, but so have the Devils, and of course New Jersey has more to play for as it fights for its playoff life. The Isles got the better of the Devils back on March 29th on Long Island, but I suspect the shoe will be on the other foot on Friday night.

Dustin Byfuglien, Winnipeg - out for season

Byfuglien suffered a torn muscle in his upper body on April 5th and will miss the remainder of the season.

Lack of scoring on the ice Monday, all games go under

There were only three games in the NHL Monday, but every single game went under the total.

This was largely due to the goaltending performances as there was a shut.out in every game. Both the Wild/Jets and Flames/Devils games ended with a score of 1-0, with the Anaheim Ducks being the only team to tally multiple goals (3).

Over the past week, the under has been trending on the ice going 15-33-3.

Infante not expected to miss significant time

Omar Infante has been diagnosed with a jaw sprain and a "non-concussive head injury" to go with six stitches after getting hit in the face by a pitch.

Andy McCullough, a Royals spokesperson told the Kansas City Star, ""Based on the Kansas City medical team's initial diagnosis, it does not appear he'll miss a significant amount of time."

Infante took a pitch directly to the jaw during Kansas City's win over the Tampa Bay Rays Monday. After immediately hitting the dirt, Infante left the game as blood poured out of a wound near his chin.

A decision on whether or not Infante will be placed on the DL is expected to come in the next 48 hours.

Lakers, and their hot under trend, host Rockets

The L.A. Lakers have been one of the hottest Over plays this season, holding an O/U record of 43-34, but their offense has disappeared lately. Over their past five, the Lakers have gone under four times including three straight.

The No.12 ranked offense in the league has been averaging 102.5 ppg this season, but over the past three have only averaged 98 ppg.

The total sits at 226.5 for the Lakers and visiting Rockets, who have averaged 217 ppg in their three contests this season.

Hackett looking for better start against Red Wings

Matt Hackett is far from an experienced NHL goaltender. Over the past three years Hackett has compiled a 4-10-0-1 record over 18 games played between the Wild and Sabres.

If Hackett is expecting to tally his second win of this season, he will need to play a stronger first period against Detroit this time around. The Red Wings tallied three goals within the first 16 minutes against Hackett and the Sabres as they coasted to a 3-2 win.

Not surprisingly, Buffalo (+179) is the home dogs against the Red Wings (-195).

Slumping Flyers clinch playoff spot with win in Florida

The Philadelphia Flyers (-158) have not looked like a playoff team as of late, dropping six of their last eight games. However they can still clinch a playoff berth Tuesday against the Florida Panthers (+146).

The Flyers and Panthers have split the season series so far, with a win and a loss each. Philly has taken five of the past six in Florida, including their one meeting at the BB&T Center this season.

If the playoffs were to start today, the Flyers would face the Rangers in the first round, but the Blue Jackets are only two points behind the Flyers in the Metropolitan division.
